Tittle: Maximum Economic Yield of Grouper Resource in the Kepulauan Seribu, DKI JakartaThis research aimed to calculate groupers optimum exploitation in economic term based on resource sustainability. The theory of maximum sustainable yield (MSY) underpins many fishery management regimes and is applied principally as a single species concept. Using a simple dynamic biomass production model we show that MSY can be identified from a long time series of multi-stock data at a regional scale in the presence of species interactions and environmental change. It suggests that MSY is robust and calculable in a multispecies environment, offering a realistic reference point for fishery management. Furthermore, the demonstration of the existence of MSY shows that it is more than a purely theoretical concept. There has been an improvement in the status of stocks in the Northeast Atlantic, but our analysis suggests further reductions in fishing effort would improve long-term yields.

Title: Role of Price Subsidies on Diesel Fuel to Sustainability of Fishing Effort in Bitung, North Sulawesi and Palabuhanratu, West JavaThis study aims to assess the role of price subsidies on diesel fuel to the sustainability of fishing. Research was carried out at two locations of Bitung and Palabuhanratu representing different level of fishery resources utilization in 2010. Data used consists of primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained through interviews with fishers using different gear on both sites and then analyzed using multiple regression. Results showed that diesel price subsidies causes the greater benefits received by the fishermen because the operational costs incurred by the fishermen are getting lower. In Bitung result of the analysis shows that the dummy variable (D) significant on revenue of 2.28 which means that the provision of diesel subsidies for fishermen to increase their revenue to 2.28%. Thus, the diesel subsidies could encourage fishermen fishing effort in Bitung in a sustainable manner. Meanwhile, in the Palabuhanratu result showed that number of days at sea (trip) and diesel subsidies (D) have negative effect to the revenue. The longer days at sea in the fishing ground Palabuhanratu Bay instead reduce fishing revenue. It means, utilization of fishery resources in the Palabuhanratu Bay have indicated on excess fishing effort, so that subsidy given should be aimed at facilitating fisher to fishing outside the Palabuhanratu Bay.

The study examined farmers–herdsmen conflict, cattle rustling, and banditry in Anka and Maradun local government area of Zamfara State, Nigeria. The study examined the influence of farmers–herdsmen conflicts on cattle rustling and banditry, and vice versa. Exploratory research was employed; focus group discussion (FGD) and key informant interview (KII)were used to collect primary data from the respondents. The data generated were transcribed and recorded verbatim (word-for-word account of verbal interview) and they were converted into written form. Data were enumerated and thematic analysis and categorization were provided. Secondary data were sourced from internet and relevant books. This study adopted the environmental resources scarcity and frustration-aggression theory. The findings of the study revealed that farmers–herdsmen conflict precipitates the acts of cattle rustling and banditry. It also revealed that conversely cattle rustling and banditry contributed to the farmers–herdsmen conflict in the local government area of Zamfara State. The study discovered that the synthesis of farmers–herdsmen conflicts, cattle rustling, and banditry pose serious threat to the safety and security of the people. The researchers recommended that there should be an introduction of grazing reserves equipped with adequate social amenities and that there should be policies capable of enhancing herders’ transformation from traditional to the modern method of animal husbandry. They also suggested that various factors responsible for farmers–herdsmen conflict, cattle rustling, and banditry should be properly managed by traditional and religious leaders. The findings corroborate the gaps which the researchers intended to fill

Abstract This study aimed to describe the characteristics and cultivation conditions of Thunnus albacares in Pelabuhan Perikanan Pantai (PPP, shore-port fisheries) of Labuhan Lombok, East Lombok. Data was collected by a simple random sample using a questionnaire for 30 fishing boats. Primary data was collected by interview with respondents and field observation, while secondary data was obtained from records of PPP in Labuhan Lombok, BPS and DKP, East Lombok. Results showed that East Lombok has a high potential for T. albacares cultivation as well as eco-friendly fishery cultivation; this is practiced by local fishermen who commonly use traditional boats sized 4-7 GT complete with fishing utilities, including handline rods and trolling rods. From a biological aspect, there was open access to T. albaceros in 2006, followed by biological overfishing in 2007, and economic overfishing in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The maximum sustainable yield (MSY) reached 922,518.18 kg per year (MSY level 3,313 per year). The resource optimization of T. albaceros reached the peak of maximum economic yield (MEY) valued at IDR 24,693,982,361, with fish haul efforts from 2,063 annual trips yielding 791,270.90 kg of tuna per year.

This paper estimates maximum sustainable yield and maximum economic yield from Schaefer and Fox surplus production bioeconomic models to find evidence of biological and economic overfishing, and their consequences in Gulf of Thailand demersal fisheries. The paper examines alternative policy instruments to reduce overfishing. The discussion emphasizes strengthening fishery management for implementing limited access, and a combination of co-management, and decentralization of fisheries management. The use of license fees that serves as a double dividend tax to reduce fishing effort and fund monitoring and enforcement has been proposed as one of the possible economic instruments.
