The present article is about A. R. Luria’s work and life in Kisegach. It is based on his autobiographical book (Luria A. R., 1982; Cole, Levitin, & Luria, 2006 [in Eng.]); on the memories of his daughter, Elena Luria, in her book about her father (Luria E. A., 1994); and on a unique document in the Luria family archive: “The Work Diary. Kisegach, 1942–1943”. The general notebook under this name served him for daily records about the examinations of patients and comments on them. This article publishes records entered in the Diary from 19th January until 13th March, 1942.In the introduction to the publication of “The Work Diary” short biographical material is presented. It gives a description of how A. R. Luria met the beginning of the war, what tasks to create a rehabilitation hospital were assigned to him, how they were carried out. The article presents the memoirs of Luria’s daughter Elena (Lena) about the life of their family in Kisegach. It includes the memoirs of B. V. Zeigarnik and S. Ya. Rubinstein on the organization by Luria of labor workshops for the rehabilitation of movements of hand and arms in wounded soldiers. The text is provided with numerous illustrations. The main part consists of Luria’s daily records of patient examinations. Usually he studied from one to four patients. They were patients with aphasia syndromes, with apraxia, agnosia or concussion symptoms. Sometimes Luria gave commentaries to the observed symptoms. He noted the characteristic details of the symptoms and hypothesized the mechanisms of their occurrence. In general, the Work Diary shows the intense practical and theoretical work of the scientist while working in Kisegach.

The present article is devoted to the scientific heritage left by a major Jewish academician of Italian descent, historian and biblical scholar Umberto Cassuto (1883-1951). His main contribution to this field consists in large-scale criticism of the Documentary Hypothesis of the origin of the Pentateuch. In the main part of our article the author presents an outline of Cassuto’s views on the first of the five «pillars» onwhich the Documentary Hypothesis rests. The author endeavors to demonstrate that, using strictly scientific argumentation, Cassuto gives quite plausible alternative explanations to such phenomena as the Documentary Hypothesis claims its unique right to explain correctly. Instead of attacking and refuting any particular aspects of the hypothesis, Cassutoconsistently argues against the very principle according to which the Torah is divided among a number of «source texts» perceived to have once been independent of one another. As a matter of fact, U. Cassuto has presented a new scholarly paradigm with a potential that would suffice to make it a full-fledged substitution of the Documentary Hypothesis. In a second article on this topic the author intends to demonstrate Cassuto’s approach to the other four «pillars» of the Documentary Hypothesis as well as to devote special attention to the response that Cassuto’s ideas met in the world of Bible studies.

JUDGMENTS OF THE SPECIAL COURTS OF THE POLISH UNDERGROUND STATE REGARDING SOLDIERS OF THE UNION OF ARMED STRUGGLE – THE HOME ARMY (ZWZ-AK) AND COLLABORATIONISTS FROM THE LVIV AREA IN 1940-1943 The present article aims to analyse the functioning of the underground judiciary during World War II, primarily in relation to people associated with the Lviv area of the ZWZ-AK in 1940-1943. First, the article presents the development of Special Courts of the ZWZ, and then as Special Military Courts. In addition, legal regulations in the field of court proceedings and adjudication of criminal sanctions are discussed. The main part of the work, based on the Files of Military Special Courts from the collections of the Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw, describes exemplary court proceedings against members of the armed underground from Area No. 3 of the ZWZ-AK in Lviv, against whom the death penalty was imposed. Moreover, based on one of the underground publications, “Information Bulletin of the Czerwieński Region”, the decisions of the Judging Commissions for Civil Combat in the matter of minor offenses and crimes committed by civilians are discussed.

The present article is an empirical, data-oriented study which focuses on the problem of morphological conversion and the way this mechanism was employed in Old English as a way of deriving new lexemes. The article briefly discusses the quantitative characteristics of the attested types, presents patterns of directionality and estimates the degree of availability of conversion in Old English grammar. The main part and purpose of the study, however, concerns the semantic characteristics of conversions sampled in the corpus. Drawing on the framework of semantic categories formulated by Clark and Clark (1979) and Plag (2003), the study aims to demonstrate semantic effects of the so-called zero-affix in Old English by looking into the relation that holds between the motivating base and the resultant derivative. Despite the fact that the availability of conversion was still quite limited in the Old English period, possibly due to numerous inflections that may have inhibited the transparency of this process, the study allows us to see how this process emerged and subsequently developed into one of the most productive word-formational techniques in the English language.

This is the second part of the article on the work and life of A. R. Luria in Kisegach, which presents the unique document The Work Diary. This notebook was used by him for daily records of patient studies. It is kept in the family archive of Luria. Comments on the Diary are written on the basis of his autobiographical book (Luria A. R., 1982; Cole, Levitin, & Luria, 2006); the memoirs of his daughter, Elena Luria, in her book about her father (Luria E. A., 1994); as well as the memoirs of his colleagues. This part of the article publishes entries in the Diary from March 15 to November 13, 1942. The introduction to the records tells about the scientist's colleagues who worked with him in the hospital. These are such well-known psychologists as B. V. Zeigarnik, A. V. Zaporozhets, S. Ya. Rubinstein, E. S. Bein, O. P. Kaufman. The article explains the reason for the myth that during the war A. V. Zaporozhets worked only in the hospital in Kaurovka under the supervision of A. N. Leontiev. In this regard, we are talking about the Kharkov School of Psychology, the areas of work of L. S. Vygotsky, A. R. Luria and A. N. Leontiev in the years 1932-1934. In general, the article shows the intensive practical and theoretical work of the scientists in Kisegach hospital.

Abstract Scholars have traditionally categorised early Syriac manuscripts as either Estrangela or Serto. The same categories dominate the prevailing narrative of how Syriac script is thought to have developed. Most see Estrangela as the earliest strata of Syriac and Serto as a later development. More recent scholarship explores how early manuscripts support neither this stark division between script styles nor a sequential development. Of particular challenge to this paradigm are a series of securely dated colophons and notes which use a script style different than the main part of the text. But previous work has looked at only five examples of this phenomenon. By expanding this investigation to 30 examples and drawing upon a recent compiled digital corpus of over 100,000 early Syriac letter forms, the present article explores how large data sets, digital analysis, and visual analytics can help one better understand the development of Aramaic scripts.

The present article is a modest introduction to a larger theme that analyzes the use of music as text in the plays, short stories and novels of Mixail Bulgakov. The important contribution of Juri Lotman’s theoretical work on artistic space, the semiosphere, and the role of incorporating “texts within texts” (текст в тексте) is fundamental to our explication of the process of understanding Bulgakov’s use of music as text in a variety of its manifestations, resulting in an integrated and full-bodied textual structure that generates meanings critical to the works in which it is embedded. This analysis will focus on defining what “music as text” is for Bulgakov and specifically consider the use of music in the play, Zoya’s Apartment (Зойкина квартира).

The present article deals with the study of the application and regulatory consolidation of the IT compliance function in both commercial and state-financed organizations. In addition to studying the application of this function, the article focuses on the issues of building a compliance system in the organization. In the main part of the work, compliance is considered as a system of measures taken by an organization for its effective operation. A detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the concerned system is presented, as well as the authors’ assessment of the risks and prospects associated with the implementation and application of the compliance methodology within the enterprise.

Justice: Revenge or Reconciliation? An Outline on the Conception of Law in Old Israel:The main part of the present article concerns the most controversial law feature in the Book of the Covenant, namely the so-called lex talionis, the law of retaliation, with the well known words, »a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth…« etc. (Ex. 21,23-25). Most likely this law was originally taken over as a quotation from the ancient Mesopotamian codes. However, in the Book of the Covenant it got a quite new meaning, concretized in the case which immediately follows the quotation and concerns a slave or a slave woman who has been maltreated by the master. If such cruelty has cost the person in question either an eye or a tooth, the master will be sentenced to set him or her free. Expressis verbis, this casuistic clause refers to the connotations of lex talionis. But at the same time the case turns this hard old law, originally used for substantiating capital punishment, into an argument for the manumission of slaves. Consequently the ancient lex talionis in the oldest Israelite book of justice was sublimated as a progressive alternative to mere revenge as the basic conception of law.

I argue that the fostering of ‘digital citizens’ in Norway is a societal project involving many actors, including parents, kindergartens and schools. The present article explores how migrant mothers in Norway experience handling their children’s use of digital media. Through institutional ethnographic exploration, I discover the ideals and conceptual terrains of what I have identified as the ‘digital Bildung’ discourse, consisting of dominant understandings of education, parenting, digitalisation and citizenship in Norwegian society. When performed in educational institutions, digital Bildung is formalised and organised by ruling texts, like government policies and curricula, but a main part of children’s digital Bildung is confined to the private sphere and entrusted to the judgement of parents. The findings indicate that migrant mothers may find it especially difficult to live up to, or challenge, the dominant understandings and practices of digital Bildung.

AbstractA widely used tool in studying quasi-monoperiodic processes is the O–C diagram. This paper deals with the application of this diagram in minor planet studies. The main difference between our approach and the classical O–C diagram is that we transform the epoch (=time) dependence into the geocentric longitude domain. We outline a rotation modelling using this modified O–C and illustrate the abilities with detailed error analysis. The primary assumption, that the monotonity and the shape of this diagram is (almost) independent of the geometry of the asteroids is discussed and tested. The monotonity enables an unambiguous distinction between the prograde and retrograde rotation, thus the four-fold (or in some cases the two-fold) ambiguities can be avoided. This turned out to be the main advantage of the O–C examination. As an extension to the theoretical work, we present some preliminary results on 1727 Mette based on new CCD observations.
