ABSTRACT Objective: To understand the resistance strategies adopted by undergraduate students in nursing, faced with situations of moral distress (MD). Method: Qualitative research, developed in three universities in the south of Brazil, two federal and one private, with 21 undergraduate students in nursing from December 2015 to February 2016; the data was submitted to the discursive textual analysis and Foucauldian theoretical reference. Results: Students resisting demonstrate a sense of self-preservation and moral empowerment. Moreover, non-resistance initiatives are related to the fear of possible sanctions. Thus, by resisting or not, students may experience both positive and negative repercussions. Final considerations: By resisting, students aim to defend what they believe to be right, demonstrating their moral empowerment in the face of their moral distress. However, the exercise of disciplinary power seems to contribute to their moral fragilization, making it difficult to implement resistance strategies.

Background: Moral distress is considered to be the negative feelings that arise when one knows the morally correct response to a situation but cannot act because of institutional or hierarchal constraints. Objectives: To analyze moral distress and its relation with sociodemographic and academic variables in undergraduate students from different universities in Brazil. Method: Quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected through the Moral Distress Scale for Nursing Students, with 499 nursing students from three universities in the extreme south of Brazil answering the scale. The data were analyzed in the statistical software SPSS version 22.0, through descriptive statistical analysis, association tests (t-test and analysis of variance), and linear regression models. Ethical considerations: Approval for the study was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande. Findings: The mean intensity of moral distress in the constructs ranged from 1.60 to 2.55. As to the occurrence of situations leading to moral distress in the constructs, the frequencies ranged from 1.21 to 2.43. The intensity level of moral distress showed higher averages in the more advanced grades of the undergraduate nursing course, when compared to the early grades of this course (between 5 and 10 grade, average = 2.60–3.14, p = 0.000). Conclusion: The demographic and academic characteristics of the undergraduate nursing students who referred higher levels of moral distress were being enrolled in the final course semesters, were at a federal university, and had no prior degree as an auxiliary nurse/nursing technician.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify strategies and spaces used by professors to promote the development of the moral competence of nursing undergraduate students. Method: Qualitative research, developed with 20 nursing professors, through a semi-structured interview, from July to October 2016. Data were submitted to discursive textual analysis. Results: Three categories were constructed: Active methodologies as strategies for the development of moral competence; Knowledge and development of clinical reasoning as motivating spaces of moral competence; Attitude of professors as a strategy for dialogue, empathy, recovery of moral values and development of caring skills. Final considerations: The use of strategies and spaces to develop pedagogical actions favors the search for knowledge, clinical reasoning and the approach of ethical and moral aspects that collaborate for the development of the moral competence of nursing undergraduate students.

Background: Mismatch between the perception of one’s moral duty and one’s real social contribution may trigger moral distress, especially when no specific resistance strategies are used to counteract morally distressing situations. Considering a philosophical-ethical conception, individuals need to first reflect upon themselves to later turn to the world and confront their current situation in order to change it. Objectives: To understand moral distress experienced by nursing professors teaching in higher education institutions and the use of parrhesia as a coping strategy. Method: This qualitative exploratory-descriptive study addressed 33 nursing professors working in Brazilian federal public universities using an open-ended question form. Data were collected between June and December 2018 and analyzed using discursive textual analysis. Ethical considerations: The Institutional Review Board at the Federal University of Rio Grande approved this study. Findings: Three categories emerged: performance of nursing professors and potentially distressing situations, the experience of moral distress, and parrhesia as a strategy to deal with moral distress. Nursing professors face situations that cause moral distress in the context of higher education, however, those who adopt parrhesia as a coping strategy find it easier to express their beliefs from the perspective of moral duty, even in the face of conflicts. Conclusion: When the nursing professors in this study acknowledge elements in the power structure that hinder their actions, they express parrhesia, as an essential virtue in an attempt to modify unsymmetrical power relations that can trigger moral distress.

ABSTRACT: In this article the topic evaluation is presented, through the analysis of an investigative process with economics’ students, from a public university, in which we reflect about the perception these graduates have on evaluation and learning. The study is characterized as a qualitative research, the investigation was developed with thirty students who are in the 6th semester and the data produced through a questionnaire, with closed-ended and open-ended questions, were analyzed through the Discursive Textual Analysis, from Moraes and Galiazzi (2016). The research presents as theoretical contributions some ideas from authors as Cid & Fialho (2012), Fernandes (2005), Pacheco (2012), Santiago (2012), William (2009), among others. Through this study, it’s evident that most of the students consider the main purpose of evaluation to be measuring their performance and attributing a classification, revealing little interest in the learning quality, which in the participants’ conception it’s the most important. Keywords: Assessment; Learning; Metacognition.

Abstract We verified moral distress related to organ shortage for transplantation in nursing students. This quantitative pilot study analyzed data from 104 nursing undergraduate students. Data were collected through a survey composed of four questions and two sociodemographic items. The chi-squared test was used to examine categorical variables, whereas continuous variable data were analyzed using ANOVA and the Pearson Product Moment correlational test for determining the existence of moral distress regarding the availability of one heart for four individuals susceptible to heart transplantation. A high level of moral distress was identified with regard to the hypothetical decision-making process, which justifies the need for further studies on the subject. Given the hypothetical scenario, moral distress was observed among the students, reaching severe distress in some cases. Approval CEP-University of Alberta Pro00068610

ABSTRACT Objective: Describe the reflections of nursing students on nursing care through the use of role-playing. Method: Qualitative research with descriptive-exploratory approach and documentary base. The data were collected from portfolios of 32 students from an undergraduate course in the Southern Brazil. The analysis of the data followed the steps of sorting, classification in structures of relevance, synthesis and interpretation. Results: Two empirical categories were obtained: (1) Feelings in the act of taking care and receiving care and (2) Reversing roles: benefits to the nurse in the act of caring. Final considerations: The use of role-playing as a strategy for teaching the theme of care to undergraduate students encouraged reflections about the skills and abilities necessary for the act of taking care and favored the students' self-perception as nurses, appropriating the essence of their future profession: care.

OBJECTIVE: To know the strategies of resistance adopted by nursing staff, facing situations of moral distress, from an ethical perspective. METHOD: The authors conducted qualitative research through semi-structured interviews, with fifteen nursing staff members of a university hospital in the extreme south of Brazil, using textual discourse analysis and the theoretical reference of Foucault. RESULTS: Two categories were constructed: denial of oneself and the other - in which one perceives that the nursing staff can perform actions that are governed predominantly by immobility and conformism, avoiding confrontations with whoever represents power in situations that provoke moral distress in them; possibility to care for oneself and for the other - in which nursing workers in situations that provoke moral distress for them exercise power and endurance. CONCLUSION: it was perceived that some professionals seem to use ethical coping strategies, in order to ensure and preserve their professional values. However, often the choice of some nursing professionals may be to relapse into immobility and the absence of building strategies of endurance. This situation may represent their reduced exercise of power and insufficient resistance in the face of ethical problems, contributing to the intensification of their invisibility in the area of health.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to identify the characteristics of violence in the context of the teaching and learning of the undergraduate Nursing course, from the perspective of students. Methods: quantitative, cross-sectional study, developed with 208 undergraduate students in Nursing. The data was obtained through the application of a survey questionnaire and processed by descriptive and bivariate statistics. Results: of the participants, 69.2% (n = 144) have experienced some kind of violence. Violent acts of a psychological nature were the most frequent, but there were also reports of physical, sexual violence and deprivation or abandonment. Violence was practiced in a theoretical and practical learning environment. Teachers and classmates were the most frequent perpetrators. Most students had no reaction, told friends, family, and colleagues, or pretended that nothing happened in the face of the violent acts. Conclusions: violence is present at various moments in the undergraduate Nursing course and can negatively impact the quality of training in the area.

This qualitative study aimed to investigate the perception of undergraduate nursing students on health promotion in view of the use of psychoactive substances. Nine undergraduate students, attending the last disciplines of the first semester, participated in the study and were divided in two focal groups. The theoretical-methodological referential was based on Paulo Freire's theory of conscientization. Data were processed through content analysis, demonstrating that students find difficulties in planning intervention strategies in health promotion in view of the drug phenomenon, because the knowledge provided by the university has a biologist tendency, typical of the medical model, recognizing a gap between theory and practice. Nevertheless, they manage to reconstruct their knowledge and become aware of their role as future health promoters in the face of drug use and abuse.
