ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the compliance of the care process involving insertion of central vascular catheter (CVC) in hemodialysis. Method: Cross-sectional quantitative approach developed at the hemodialysis service of a reference hospital in Sergipe, Brazil. Sample consisting of 1,342 actions evaluated, corresponding to 122 forms for monitoring and control of CVC insertion. Data collection was held from July to December 2016. Results: The adherence rate to the use of the insertion form was 54.9%. The procedure evaluated achieved 93% overall compliance. Of the 11 specific actions observed, seven (64%) presented 100% compliance. The density of the overall incidence of primary bloodstream infections reduced from 10.6 to 3.1 infections per 1,000 patients/day. Conclusion: Although the observed actions reached specific desired conformities, the use of the checklist was lower than expected. Strategies for monitoring, coaching and educational and organizational actions can contribute to safe care.

Background: Patient and staff safety at healthcare facilities during outbreaks hinges on a prompt infection prevention and control response. Physicians leading these programmes have encountered numerous obstacles during the pandemic. Aim/objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate infection prevention and control practices and explore the challenges in Pakistan during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study and administered a survey to physicians leading infection prevention and control programmes at 18 hospitals in Pakistan. Results: All participants implemented universal masking, limited the intake of patients and designated separate triage areas, wards and intensive care units for coronavirus disease 2019 patients at their hospitals. Eleven (61%) physicians reported personal protective equipment shortages. Staff at three (17%) hospitals worked without the appropriate personal protective equipment due to limited supplies. All participants felt overworked and 17 (94%) reported stress. Physicians identified the lack of negative pressure rooms, fear and anxiety among hospital staff, rapidly evolving guidelines, personal protective equipment shortages and opposition from hospital staff regarding the choice of recommended personal protective equipment as major challenges during the pandemic. Discussion: The results of this study highlight the challenges faced by physicians leading infection prevention and control programmes in Pakistan. It is essential to support infection prevention and control personnel and bridge the identified gaps to ensure patient and staff safety at healthcare facilities.

Background: Percutaneous exposure to contaminated needle sticks and other sharps is a danger not only to health care workers but also to nursing and paramedical students that increases the morbidity and mortality from infections with blood borne pathogens. Knowledge concerning the general precautions is vital for the prevention of such accidents. This study aimed to describe the knowledge and practice of infection prevention and control guidelines among health care students regarding needle stick and sharp objects injuries. Methods: A descriptive, cross sectional research design was used. Health care students were selected using convenience sampling which included 90 students. Data was collected using a self-reporting structured online questionnaire and administered to a number of health care students including nursing and Clinical laboratory specialists. Results: It was found that about half (49%, 52%) of the students had fair knowledge and fair practice regarding needle stick injuries and infection control guidelines respectively. The majority of the students (76.7%) had positive attitudes towards Needle stick injuries and infection control guidelines. Conclusion: This study concluded that knowledge and practice of health care students about the risk associated with needle-stick and sharp objects injuries and use of preventive measures was fair. Special concerns should be given to the role of post exposure prophylaxis, the recapping of needles and the importance and mechanism of reporting NSIs. Standing operating procedures should be conveyed regarding needle-stick and sharp objects injuries in all the health facilities.

Practically, harm mitigation and risk containment demand cross-sectional initiatives incorporate both approaches to infection prevention and control and methodologies from clinical risk management.

The COVID-19 infection prevention and control program in hospitals is an effort to provide guidance for health workers to stay healthy, safe, productive, and the community gets services that meet standards. Health workers who work in hospitals are very vulnerable to being exposed to  COVID -19, so it is very important that health workers and policy makers understand the basic concepts of infectious diseases. The purpose of this study was to develop a program to prevent and control covid-19 infection in maintaining the health status of health workers at the Medan City Hospital. The type of research used is action research. The participants in this study were 14 people consisting of 2 parts, namely 1) Participants for qualitative data were taken from managerial such as medical services, nursing, medical records, infection prevention and control units, and the head of the room. 2) Participants for quantitative data are taken from health workers, namely nurses. Data collection in this study used various methods, namely individual interviews, observation, self-report, focus group discussions and several data collection tools, namely interview guides, focus group discussion guides, questionnaires, observation sheets, and supporting tools, namely voice recorders. The results of this study obtained outputs, namely standard operating procedures for the prevention and control of covid-19 infection, and from the results of health status checks on health workers from before and after the implementation of the  COVID -19 infection prevention and control program, the results were before (PCR/Antigen: Negative). 71.43%, Positive: 28.57%; Vital sign normal: 85.71%, Abnormal 14.29%), and after (PCR/Antigen: Negative 85.71%, Positive: 14.29%; Vital sign normal: 100%). This proves that there is an influence of the Covid-19 infection prevention and control program in maintaining the health status of health workers in hospitals. Suggestions to hospital leaders to continue to evaluate prevention and control programs for COVID-19 infection in accordance with developments and the situation at hand.

Abstract Background Efficient monitoring and control of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) require access to diagnostic tests, and serological diagnostic testing is desirable. In the current study, antibodies were investigated in patients recently diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Methods Cross-sectional data were obtained from 245 patients in whom SARS-CoV-2 infection had been confirmed via real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction between March and October 2020. Serum samples were acquired between 2 and 60 days following the onset of COVID-19 symptoms or the first detection of SARS-CoV-2 in asymptomatic patients. All specimens were tested simultaneously using an IgM/IgG rapid diagnostic test (RDT), IgG nucleocapsid protein-based chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA), IgG, and IgA spike protein-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). Blood donor samples obtained in 2018 were used as negative controls. Results The sensitivity and specificity of the RDT IgG were compared with the IgG immunoassays as standards. The RDT IgG exhibited 97.5% sensitivity and 89.4% specificity compared with a CMIA IgG, 98.4% sensitivity, and 78.8% specificity compared with an ELISA IgG. IgM, IgG, and IgA seropositivity rates were low between 1 and 2 weeks after COVID-19 symptom onset or the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. IgM seropositivity rate began decreasing after 4 weeks, whereas IgG and IgA seropositivity rate remained at appreciable levels over the 8-week study period. No cross-reactivity with seasonal coronaviruses was detected. Conclusions IgG RDT alone or combined with molecular diagnostic tests may be useful for identifying recent SARS-CoV-2 infection.

  Background: Infections are common in the children attending daycare centers how act as predisposes to it. Hygienic interventions have a fundamental role in infection control and disease prevention in child care settings. Objective: - To evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of nurseries workers in infection prevention and control among the children. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study using the researcher-developed questionnaire validated by two experts and piloted and 100 nurseries-workers had participated in it. Result: the mean age of participants was 37.5 years±12.1, (37%) aged 18-30 yrs, 58% married, and 57% with higher education, 54% of nurseries the participant take care of 11-20 children. 67 (67%) had correct knowledge about infection control, (91%) had the corrected practice, but unfortunately, 47 (47%) had low-attitude. Education level has significantly associated with the knowledge, attitude, and practice of the child care workers. Conclusion: the majority of the nurseries workers had good knowledge and correct practice and less about their attitude in infection prevention.

Abstract Background The adequacy of personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection prevention and control (IPC) training in UK medical students and interim Foundation Year 1 (FiY1) doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic is unknown, as is its impact on COVID-19-related anxiety. Methods Cross-sectional, multi-centre study analysing self-reported adequacy of PPE and IPC training and correlation to a modified pandemic anxiety scale. Participants were current medical students and FiY1 doctors in the UK. Data were collected by an online survey. Results Participants reported that they received insufficient PPE information (43%) and IPC training (56%). Significantly, fewer participants identifying as women or BAME/mixed ethnicity reported receiving sufficient PPE information, compared with those identifying as men and White British/White Other, respectively. COVID-19-related anxiety was significantly higher in those without sufficient reported PPE or IPC training, in women compared with men, and in FiY1 doctors compared with medical students. Conclusions With medical students currently volunteering in and imminently returning to hospitals in an educational capacity, levels of self-reported PPE and IPC training are sub-optimal. Better training is paramount to avoid harm to patients and healthcare professionals and to reduce COVID-19-related anxiety among medical students and FiY1 doctors.
