ABSTRACT Objectives: to know the nurses’ perception on violence against children by their companion in pediatric ward; describe the nurses’ actions in this situation; analyze these actions in light of government policies; and know the organization and communication of the multidisciplinary team to face this phenomenon. Method: a descriptive qualitative research conducted through semi-structured interviews with nurses. Thematic analysis identified three categories: “A perception of violence”; “Actions and interventions performed by nurses”; and “Multidisciplinary team organization and communication”. Results: nurses recognize the types of violence, but attaches greater severity to physical violence. The reported causes were children with difficult temperaments, transgenerational violence and hospitalization. The actions were dialogue, companion-child separation, registry and notification to the Guardianship Council. Poor communication from the multidisciplinary team and medical-centric organization have been reported.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the care provided by Basic Health Units (BHU) to families involved in domestic intrafamily violence against children and adolescents. Method: Qualitative research, based on the Paradigm of Complexity. Data collection was performed with 41 professionals through focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Results: The following categories emerged from data analysis: 'Everything comes here', which reflects the legitimate place of BHUs for the population and the actions taken to build care for families; and 'We only do what is really necessary', which brings the look to violence still based on the positivist and biomedical paradigm. Final considerations: The model of understanding and construction of work processes in the BHU is structured in the aforementioned paradigm. Nurses have the possibility to become agents of change, both in professionals' training and in the care thought and provided to communities.

Background: There is a growing amount of research interest to understand the role of food in well-being. The demand for community supported agriculture (CSA), bringing people spatially, economically, and socially closer to food, is continuously expanding. CSAs play an important role in both sustainable agriculture practices and influencing consumers’ food-related practices, but yet have received little attention in well-being research. Methods: This study explores food-related well-being among CSA members by using an exploratory, qualitative research design and a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews. Results: The findings stress the relevance of psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of food-related well-being beyond the nutritional characteristics of food in CSA. Conclusion: The role of sustainable agriculture in contributing to food-related well-being becomes particularly evident based on consumers’ experiences. These results are important in convincing people that their food-related experiences belong to their perceived well-being as well as stimulating people to elevate their multidimensional expectations in relation to food.

This paper presents results from a study in Aotearoa New Zealand 1 which explored the ideas of social work practitioners on public perceptions of social work and how to improve them. This qualitative research was part of a Master’s project for two of the authors and followed on from two previous quantitative studies on this topic in Aotearoa. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 social work practitioners. Thematic analysis was used to create themes concerning what the perceived public perception was, what contributed to it, and how to improve it. The findings have implications for being better able to understand factors that contribute to the public perception of social work so that it may be improved, for increasing the public’s understanding of social work, and for recruitment of students into the profession.

Abstract Objective: To describe the discharge preparation for relatives of hospitalized children for continuing antibiotic therapy at home, from the nurse perspective. Method: A descriptive and qualitative research, performed in the ward of a pediatric hospital in Rio de Janeiro. It was attended by fifteen nurses through semi-structured interviews, between April and May 2018, and data was submitted to Thematic Analysis. Results: The following thematic units emerged: Preparing the relatives for the discharge as a punctual moment; Professionals involved in the preparation of the discharge for relatives; Educational strategies in preparing the relatives for the discharge; and Communication among professionals in preparing the relatives for the discharge. Conclusion and implications for practice: There is a need to systematize the discharge process of the child that leaves the hospital to finish their therapeutic scheme with antibiotics at home, thereby avoiding inappropriate use and therapeutic errors.

Objetivo: identificar as experiências culturais relacionadas às decisões maternas para a amamentação entre dois países, visando compreender seus significados. Método: pesquisa qualitativa através de estudo de caso, sendo realizadas nove entrevistas semiestruturadas, com mulheres brasileiras e francesas, no período de abril a dezembro de 2017. Aplicou-se a análise temática de Bardin aos depoimentos. O projeto da pesquisa teve anuência de Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa. Resultados: quatro categorias emergiram da análise dos depoimentos: escolha, cultura e influências; entre benefícios e prazer; idealismo da amamentação; relação com o corpo: dor, pudor e sexualidade. Conclusão: as entrevistadas brasileiras apontam para uma valorização da mulher que amamenta e uma culpabilização daquela que não o faz. E para as francesas a sociedade veicula a ideia de que amamentação significa falta de liberdade. Nos dois lados ainda falta a mulher se apropriar dos seus desejos.ABSTRACTObjective: to identify the cultural experiences related to maternal breastfeeding decisions between two countries, aiming to understand their meanings. Methods: qualitative research through case study. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with Brazilian and French women, from April to December 2017. Bardin's thematic analysis was applied to the statements. The study was approved by ethics research committee. Results: four categories emerged: choice, culture and influences; between benefits and pleasure; breastfeeding idealism; relationship with the body: pain, shame and sexuality. Conclusion: in Brazil there is an appreciation of women who breastfeed and a blame for those who do not. In France society conveys the idea that breastfeeding means lack of freedom. In both countries the woman still needs to take ownership of her wishes.RESUMENObjetivo: identificar las experiencias culturales relacionadas con las decisiones de lactancia materna entre dos países, con el objetivo de comprender sus significados. Método: investigación cualitativa a través del estudio de caso. Fueron nueve entrevistas semiestructuradas con mujeres brasileñas y francesas, de abril a diciembre de 2017. El análisis temático de Bardin se aplicó a los datos. La investigación tuvo anuencia del Comité de Ética en Investigación.  Resultados: cuatro categorías emergieron: elección, cultura e influencias; entre beneficios y placer; idealismo de la lactancia materna; relación con el cuerpo: dolor, pudor y sexualidad. Conclusion: en Brasil, hay valorización de la mujer que amamanta y  culpabilización de aquella que no lo hace. En Francia, la sociedad vehicula la idea de que la lactancia significa falta de libertad. En los dos países todavía falta la mujer apropiarse de sus deseos.

Recent research into critical pedagogy supports the implementation of performance-based practices into the classroom. This qualitative research explored the pragmatic ways in which youth, ages 8-17, are  taught in Canada’s, specifically Ontario’s, education system on topics of difference and power. Through semi-structured interviews, four elementary and high school educators described their experiences using performance-based teaching in the classroom. A thematic analysis revealed that teachers found including such practices empowered students and influenced their understanding of their own identities as well as the systemic oppression of marginalized groups.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to characterize and analyze the experiences of families involved in domestic violence against children and adolescents, based on the Paradigm of Complexity. Methods: qualitative research, in which data of 15 families was collected through documentary research, open interviews and field diary. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: two categories “I don’t have it” and “I didn’t have it” emerged, revealing the historicity that marks the violence experienced in the present. They include social vulnerability, maternal burden, associated with urban violence to which families are exposed. At the same time, stories of violence by the intimate partner, as well as intergenerational violence and drug abuse have impacted the current moment. Final Considerations: nursing can contribute to attribute new meaning to violent stories woven by families, as well as to the interdisciplinary construction of perspectives and interventions that consider the multiple violence and adversities to which such a population is exposed.

Many autistic people are motivated to have friends and relationships, and close family bonds, despite the fact that autism is clinically characterised as a condition negatively affecting social interaction. Many first-hand accounts of autistic people describe feelings of comfort and ease specifically with other autistic people. This qualitative research explored and contrasted autistic experiences of spending social time with neurotypical and autistic friends and family. 12 autistic adults (10F, aged 21-51) completed semi-structured interviews focused on time spent with friends and family; positive and negative aspects of time spent with neurotypical and autistic friends and family; and feelings during and after spending time together. Three themes were identified: cross-neurotype understanding, minority status, and belonging. Investigation of these themes reveals the benefits of autistic people creating and maintaining social relationships with other autistic people more systematically than previous individual reports. They highlight the need for autistic-led social opportunities and indicate benefits of informal peer support for autistic adults.

Objetivo: analisar a percepção dos profissionais da equipe multidisciplinar acerca da assistência em cuidados paliativos. Método: estudo descritivo, qualitativo, desenvolvido em outubro de 2017, em hospital especializado em doenças cardiopulmonares situado em uma capital do nordeste brasileiro. O projeto do estudo foi aprovado por Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa. A amostra contou com 15 participantes da equipe multidisciplinar. Os dados foram coletados mediante entrevista semiestruturada e submetidos à análise temática. Resultados: da análise, emergiram duas categorias: conhecimento da equipe multidisciplinar sobre cuidados paliativos e a percepção da prática dos cuidados paliativos. Os profissionais possuem um conhecimento ainda incipiente sobre cuidados paliativos e suas prerrogativas, além da necessidade de um comprometimento efetivo para a qualidade desse cuidado. Conclusão: apesar de os profissionais reconhecerem a necessidade de oferecer conforto nos momentos finais da vida, o conhecimento acerca do cuidado paliativo é limitado e, por isso, eles vivenciam dilemas ao lidar com equipes, pacientes e familiares.ABSTRACTObjective: to analyze the perception of professionals of the multidisciplinary team about assistance in palliative care. The professionals have a still incipient knowledge about what palliative care is and its prerogatives, in addition to the need for an effective commitment to the quality of this care. Conclusion: Although professionals recognize the need to offer comfort in the final moments of life, knowledge about palliative care is limited and, therefore, professionals perceive dilemmas when dealing with staff, patient and family.RESUMENObjetivo: analizar la percepción de los profesionales del equipo multidisciplinario sobre la asistencia en cuidados paliativos. Método: estudio descriptivo, cualitativo, desarrollado en octubre de 2017 en una unidad hospitalaria especializada en enfermedades cardiopulmonares ubicada en una capital del noreste de Brasil. La muestra incluyó a 15 participantes del equipo multidisciplinario. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas y sometidos a análisis temático. Resultados: del análisis surgieron dos categorías: conocimiento del equipo multidisciplinario sobre cuidados paliativos y la percepción de la práctica de cuidados paliativos. Los profesionales tienen un conocimiento aún incipiente sobre qué son los cuidados paliativos y sus prerrogativas, además de la necesidad de un compromiso efectivo con la calidad de esta atención. Conclusión: aunque los profesionales reconocen la necesidad de ofrecer comodidad en los momentos finales de la vida, el conocimiento sobre los cuidados paliativos es limitado y, por lo tanto, los profesionales perciben dilemas al tratar con el personal, el paciente y la familia.

Aim of this paper is to investigate the training needs of theater educators who work in primary education. The fact that triggered the inception of this research was that studies concerning aesthetic education in Greece refer to all specialties (musicians, visual artists, theater educators). Consequently, the educational needs of the above specialties may converge in some areas, but, depending on the specialty, they differ in others. Additionally, the in-job-training of theater educators has been at least a minor issue. For this reason, it was considered important to study more specifically the specialty of theater educators. In this context, therefore, a qualitative research was designed and conducted using a sample of thirteen theater educators, who work in primary schools in the prefecture of Heraklion, Crete. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data and the results were analyzed by topic. The thematic analysis showed that there is an urgent need for training programs in certain areas.
