ABSTRACT The application of phosphate fertilizer is indispensable for the achievement of sustainable bean production, and P is necessary practically in the entire cycle. Thus, cultural management alternatives have been used in the best use of this nutrient, among them the use of Brachiaria as cover crop. The objective of this research was to evaluate the dynamics of phosphorus in the soil with and without the presence of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú as cover crop, and the bean response to phosphorus fertilization. We used a randomized block design with a split plot arrangement; the plots were composed of P2O5 doses (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 kg ha-1) via triple superphosphate; and the subplots were composed of the presence and absence of Brachiaria as previous cover crop cultivation of beans. Soil samples were taken at 15 and 30 days after sowing (DAS) bean. In the samples, phosphorus fractionation in soil was carried out by the Hedley technique. Phosphorus content was evaluated in the leaf and grain yield of bean plants. The phosphorus fertilization and cultivation of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú as cover crop provided changes in the levels of labile P of soil at 15 and 30 DAS bean, and labile P of soil only at 15 DAS bean. The presence of B. brizantha cv. Marandú as cover crop increases the P content in the bean leaf with consequent grain yield gain of 18%.

To achieve better results in the no-tillage system (NTS), it is important to properly manage the cover crop prior to planting by using herbicides, usually glyphosate. The effect of glyphosate on plant coverage is slow, and plants take a few days to die completely. Thus, when applying the herbicide on the same day of planting soybean or corn, cover crops are still alive and standing, causing initial shading on seedlings of the crop and delaying its establishment. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of distinct cover crops and their timing of desiccation prior to planting soybean or corn, on crop yield and yield components. Two experiments were installed, one for soybean and another for corn. Each experiment consisted in combining three cover crops (Brachiaria brizantha, common bean or millet) chemically desiccated at two timings before planting the crop (15 or 0 days before planting) under no-tillage system (NTS). Experiments were installed in a completely randomized block design with five replications. Brachiaria brizantha produced the highest amount of biomass; common bean and millet as cover crops allowed higher soybean grain yields; herbicide application under common bean, millet and Brachiaria brizantha 15 days before planting soybean allowed higher crop grain yields; desiccation timing of common bean did not affect corn grain yield; Brachiaria brizantha should be desiccated 15 days before planting corn to allow maximum grain yield; when millet was used as a cover crop, glyphosate application at planting of corn allowed the highest grain yield.

The impact of Rhizophagus intraradices (RI) interaction with phosphorus fertilization on the yield of Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Negro Tacaná, and the N and P content in plant tissue and grain were determined. The experiment consisted of six treatments:1) Control, 2) RI, 3) 40 kg.ha-1 of P2O5, 4) RI + 40 kg.ha-1 of P2O5, 5) RI + 26 kg.ha-1 of P2O5, and 6) RI + 13 kg.ha-1 of P2O5, using a randomized block design with four replicates. Results probed that inoculation of plants with RI promoted a better health, growth and grain yield. In particular, grain yield inoculated with RI presented similar values as obtained with inorganic fertilization of 40 kg.ha-1 of P2O5, indicating that inorganic fertilization can be fully substituted by RI. The use of this technology provides an efficient use of soil nutrients, which is translated into a lower investment for producers.

A field experiment was carried out with the use of complete randomized block design (CRBD) to study the effect of five bacterial inoculations (non- inoculation, inoculation with phosphate soluble bacteria, inoculation with Azotobacter bacteria, inoculation with Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacterial mixture). Two levels of salinity of irrigation water 3 and 6 dS.m-1 and four levels of phosphate fertilizer (0, 40, 80 and 120 kgP.ha-1). The results showed that the mixed inoculation of phosphate soluble bacteria, Azotobacter and P. fluorescens bacteria were superior to the rest of the single bacterial inoculation in plant height, dry weight of the shoot part, total grain yield, weight of 100 grains, grain weight in cop, leaf surface area, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentrations in the vegetative growth and grain with 33.08%, 31.90%, 61.07%, 44.99%, 62.06%, 36.94%, 12.8%, 31.5%, 156.5%, 272.3%, 39.5% and 75.1%, respectively, in comparison with the non- inoculation and irrigated water treatment of 6 dS.m-1 (T0S2P0), while the inoculation of phosphorus soluble bacteria did not differ significantly from the P.fluorescence inoculation in most of these traits. T3S2P3 was not significantly differ from T4S2P3 combined in the increase of plant height and total grain yield compared to the non- inoculation and non-phosphorous treated at the salt level 3and6 dS.m-1. The single-dose T2S2P3 did not differ significantly from the combined T4S2P3 3 and 6 dS.m-1.

Sixteen genotypes of rice (including one check) were evaluated on 18 quantitative traits during sali (August), 2018 in a randomized block design with three replications at Instruction cum Research Farm, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat to study the nature and magnitude of variability, heritability and genetic advance under delayed sown condition. The analysis of variance for 18 quantitative traits revealed the presence of significant differences for grain yield and its component characters. The highest genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was observed for chaffs per panicle followed by grains per panicle, spikelet sterility (%), spikelets per panicle, grain yield (kg/ha). A high heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for plant height (cm), spikelets per panicle, spikelet sterility (%), chaffs per panicle, grains per panicle, grain yield (g/hill), grain yield (kg/ha), biological yield (kg/ha), straw weight (kg/ha) and harvest index (%) indicating that selection might be effective for improvement of these characters under delayed sown condition with low input. From the findings of this investigation, one genotype viz., Gandhari emerged as the outstanding genotype which yielded 4170 kg/ha and could be directly used for cultivation in delayed sown situation with low inputs. Some other promising genotypes that yielded higher than the check Manoharsali under delayed sown condition were JR 29, JR 16, Basundhara and JR 60 and could be utilized as potential parental material in the hybridization programmes designed to develop suitable rice varieties for delayed sown situation.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate baby corn yield, green corn yield, and grain yield in corn cultivar BM 3061, with weed control achieved via a combination of hoeing and intercropping with gliricidia, and determine how sample size influences weed growth evaluation accuracy. A randomized block design with ten replicates was used. The cultivar was submitted to the following treatments: A = hoeings at 20 and 40 days after corn sowing (DACS), B = hoeing at 20 DACS + gliricidia sowing after hoeing, C = gliricidia sowing together with corn sowing + hoeing at 40 DACS, D = gliricidia sowing together with corn sowing, and E = no hoeing. Gliricidia was sown at a density of 30 viable seeds m-2. After harvesting the mature ears, the area of each plot was divided into eight sampling units measuring 1.2 m² each to evaluate weed growth (above-ground dry biomass). Treatment A provided the highest baby corn, green corn, and grain yields. Treatment B did not differ from treatment A with respect to the yield values for the three products, and was equivalent to treatment C for green corn yield, but was superior to C with regard to baby corn weight and grain yield. Treatments D and E provided similar yields and were inferior to the other treatments. Therefore, treatment B is a promising one. The relation between coefficient of experimental variation (CV) and sample size (S) to evaluate growth of the above-ground part of the weeds was given by the equation CV = 37.57 S-0.15, i.e., CV decreased as S increased. The optimal sample size indicated by this equation was 4.3 m².

ABSTRACT The upland rice farmers in Suriname use local varieties and low level technologies in the field. As a result, the upland rice grain yield is low, at about 1 000 kg ha-1. Our objective was to evaluate the use of upland rice cultivars from Suriname and Brazil, and the effect of nitrogen, N, phosphorus, P, and potassium, K, fertilizers on cultivation variables. We undertook four field trials in the Victoria Area, in the Brokopondo District, using a randomized block design each with four replications. The most productive rice varieties were BRS Esmeralda (grain yield 2 903 kg ha-1) and BRS Sertaneja (2 802 kg ha-1). The highest grain yield of 2 620 kg ha-1 was achieved with a top dressing application of 76.41 kg N ha-1 20 days after sowing. For P, the highest grain yield of 3 085 kg ha-1 was achieved with application of 98.06 kg ha-1 P2O5 applied at sowing. An application rate of 31.45 kg ha-1 of K2O at sowing achieved the highest grain yield of 2 952 kg ha-1. Together, these application rates of N, P and K resulted in rice grain yield of about 3 000 kg ha-1, which is three times greater than the national average for upland rice. We demonstrate that the use of improved rice varieties matched to the local conditions, and application of appropriate fertilizers, are management practices that can result in significant increases in rice grain yield in Suriname.

The present investigation was carried out with F2 plants from a cross between two parents i.e., BPT-5204 and IR-64Drt1. The selection of parents for crosses was made based on genotypes that were tolerant and susceptible to drought condition. BPT-5204 was drought susceptible and IR-64Drt1 was also tolerant to drought. In this experiment adequate amount of variability was detected for grain yield per plant and its components among 324 segregants evaluated under augmented randomized block design II in normal field condition. The analysis of variance for grain yield and its attributing characters among blocks, treatments, entries, checks and checks vs entries revealed presence of significant variation in the segregants studied. However, with respect to checks, non-significant differences were recorded for only L/B ratio. The results indicated that among 324 rice genotypes including checks, only 9 rice genotypes expressed higher yield compared to seven checks varieties under normal field condition. The segregants S-51, S-122, S-135, S-195, S-199, S-210, S-219, S-222, S-251 were top ranking genotypes with respect to all checks.

A series of on-farm fi eld experiments were conducted in two locations in Padang, Koto Panjang and Koto Tingga, West Sumatera, Indonesia in 2015. The purpose of the experiment was to establish the formula of organic fertilizer derived from Tithonia supplied with micro nutrients, Zn and Mn, on rice. The experiments were conducted using completely-randomized block design with six treatments and three replications. The treatments were P = Tithonia Organic Fertilizer Plus (TOFP) + 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1, Q = TOFP + 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1+ 3.0 kg Zn.ha-1, R = TOFP + 4.5 kg Mn.ha-1 + 6 kg Zn.ha-1, S= TOFP + 4.5 kg Mn.ha-1+ 9 kg Zn.ha-1, T = TOFP only, U = 100% chemical fertilizer only. Treatment with micro nutrients as addition to TOFP (TOFP+ 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1 and TOFP+ 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1+3.0 kg Zn.ha-1) increased rice grain yield by 80 g per clump.

In this study, we aimed to estimate general and specific combining abilities (GCA and SCA, respectively) and to verify genetic divergence (Rogers distance, Unweighted Pair-Group Method Using Arithmetic Average - UPGMA) using microsatellite markers in maize inbred lines. Using a partial diallel scheme, a total of 19 inbred lines were crossed as (9 x 10), which were derived from the single hybrids SG6015 and P30F53, respectively. The 90 hybrids were evaluated in an incomplete randomized block design with common checks and three replications during the 2017-2018 growing season. Flowering time, average plant height, ear height insertion, average ear diameter, ear length, number of lodged and broken plants, mass of 100 grains and grain yield were measured. According to the analysis of variance, GCA, and SCA were significant (p < 0.05) in all the measured traits; inbred line B as well as 1 and 8, derived from the single hybrids SG6015 and P30F53, respectively, were selected due to their higher GCA values in grain yield to be used in crosses as testers, while the single cross hybrid (B x 1) was selected due to their higher SCA value in grain yield to be used in future breeding programs. The molecular marker analysis divided the inbred lines into two groups, where the highest dissimilarity (0.74) was observed between lines A and 9; however, these did not result in a high SCA value, therefore the hybrids obtained by such crossings were not selected for grain yield.

A necessidade de conhecer a marcha de absorção do nitrogênio (N) pelo feijoeiro é importante para compreender os desempenhos produtivo e qualitativo dessa cultura.  O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência da cobertura nitrogenada em função de diferentes estádios fenológicos no desempenho morfoagronômico e produtivo e nas características tecnológicas dos grãos do feijoeiro em sistema de plantio convencional. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por doze combinações de fornecimento de N (FN) em cobertura (dose total = 90 kg ha-1 de N) aplicadas nos estádios fenológicos V3, V4 e R5 (V3+V4+R5) do feijoeiro de inverno irrigado: 00+00+00; 30+30+30; 30+60+00; 30+00+60; 60+30+00; 00+60+30; 45+45+00; 00+45+45; 45+00+45; 90+00+00; 00+90+00; e 00+00+90. A fonte de N utilizada foi ureia convencional. Os FN 30+00+60, 00+45+45 e 45+00+45 incrementam a produtividade de grãos e a eficiência agronômica em relação à ausência de N e à aplicação de dose única no estádio fenológico V4. do feijoeiro comum. As maiores produtividades de proteína bruta e o menor tempo para cozimento foram proporcionadas pelos FN 00+45+45, 45+00+45, 90+00+00, 00+90+00 e 00+00+90.Palavras-chave: Phaseolus vulgaris; parcelamento do N; eficiência agronômica; tecnologia dos grãos. NITROGEN TOPDRESSING AT DIFFERENT PHENOLOGICAL STAGES ON COMMON BEAN CHANGES GRAIN YIELD AND QUALITY ABSTRACT: The need to know the nitrogen uptake (N) by common bean is important to understand the productive and qualitative performance of this crop. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of nitrogen topdressing as a function of different phenological stages on the morphometric and productive performance, and on the technological characteristics of the bean grains grown under conventional soil preparation. A randomized block design with four replications was used. The treatments were constituted by twelve topdressing N supply combinations (NS) (total dose = 90 kg ha-1 N) applied in the phenological stages V3, V4 and R5 (V3+V4+R5) of irrigated winter bean: 00+00+00; 30+30 +30; 30+60+00; 30+00+60; 60 + 30 + 00; 00+60+30; 45+45+00; 00+45+45; 45+00+45; 90+00+00; 00+90+00; and 00+00+90. The source of N used was conventional urea. NS 30 + 00 + 60, 00 + 45 + 45 and 45 + 00 + 45 increase grain yield and agronomic efficiency in relation to the absence of N and single dose application at V4 phenological stage of common bean. The highest crude protein yields and the shortest cooking time were provided by FN 00+45+45, 45+00+45, 90+00+00, 00+90+00 and 00+00+90.Keywords: Phaseolus vulgaris; N splitting; agronomic efficiency; grains technology.
