Patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) often complain and have limitation in masticatory function, which can be affected by a complex interaction of factors. The aim of this study was analyze the masticatory function in patients with TMD using surface electromyography (EMG) and masticatory efficiency (ME). Twenty-seven patients with TMD and 25 considered control (n), aged between 18 and 60 years, paired by age and gender, were evaluated according to RDC/TMD. In both groups were performed: EMG with chewing gum, clinical evaluation of habitual chewing with stuffed cookie (CE) (number of chewing strokes and time) and analysis of ME with fuchsin beads. Nonparametric statistical analyses were used (Mann-Whitney) for comparisons between groups, with 5% significance level. For all variables, the TMD group showed higher values than the control, with statistical significance for ME (p<0.0001), number of chewing strokes (p=0.04), chewing time (p=0.009), right masseter EMG activity (p=0.05), left masseter (p=0.005), right anterior temporal (p=0.05) and left anterior temporal (p=0.001). The conclusion is that patients with TMD showed changed chewing pattern, but without impairment of masticatory function.

ABSTRACTThe objective of this paper is to specify the relationships between age and gender differentials in health among older people in China. The data were drawn from the 2002 Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Study (CLHLS), which included 15,789 respondents aged 65 or more years. The health indicators included the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental ADL scores, cognitive ability (using the Mini Mental State Examination), visual function, hearing or auditory function, number of natural teeth, self-reported health, and self-reported quality of life. The statistical significance of the age relationships was examined using Mann-Whitney U tests and Spearman's rank correlation coefficients. The principal results were that above 65 years of age, gender differentials were observed in most of the health indicators at most ages, although self-rated quality of life was an exception. For most of the objective (observer-rated) health indicators, the gender differentials increased with greater age, but that for the number of natural teeth decreased with age. Gender differentials in the two subjective health measures had no significant relationship with age. It is concluded that older Chinese women have poorer health than men and are in many ways disadvantaged, and that the relative disadvantage increases with age. Chinese women tend to live longer and suffer ill-health more than men.

AbstractObjective:To compare the prevalence of nasalStaphylococcus aureuscarriage among outpatients receiving allergen-injection immunotherapy with the prevalence among healthy controls and to determine predictors of nasalS aureuscarriage.Design:Survey.Setting:Allergy clinic of a university hospital.Participants:A volunteer sample consisting of 45 outpatients undergoing desensitization therapy and 84 first- and second-year medical students. Results:The nasalS aureuscarriage rate was significantly higher among patients (46.7%) than among students (26.2%;P=.019). In a multivariate model adjusted for age and gender, the presence of atopic dermatitis or eczema was the only independent predictor of nasal Saureuscarriage (odds ratio [OR], 4.4; 95% confidence interval [CI95], 1.2-16.0;P=.02). The only other participant characteristic associated with nasalS aureuscarriage was immunotherapy with allergen injections (OR, 1.98; CI95, 0.7-6.0), but this association did not reach statistical significance (P=.23). The probability of nasalS aureuscarriage was 88.9% for patients receiving allergen injections and having atopic dermatitis or eczema, and 36.1% for patients receiving allergen injections without atopic dermatitis or eczema. Conclusions:Patients undergoing desensitization have a higher nasal carriage rate ofS aureus. However, factors other than the regular use of needles, and in particular abnormalities related to the atopic constitution of these patients, may predispose this population forS aureuscarriage.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to identify the occurrence of a difference in skin sensitivity between analogous points on the face in individuals with temporomandibular disorder. Methods: a total of 60 individuals of both genders, aged 18 to 73 years, participated in the study. People classified with TMD signs and symptoms with the Fonseca Anamnestic Questionnaire were included. The skin sensitivity was evaluated with a Semmes-Weinstein esthesiometer. Sensitivity change was defined in this study as the occurrence of a difference between analogous points on both hemifaces. The localization of the points followed the regional block anatomical description and was confirmed with a neuromuscular electrostimulation device. The collected data were analyzed statistically with a 5% significance level. Results: the occurrence of a difference in sensitivity between the analogous points had a significant association with age group and severity of TMD. However, no association was perceived between sensitivity change and gender. Conclusion: in the population studied, the more severe the temporomandibular disorder, the greater the skin sensitivity change on the face. Also, the older the person, the higher the number of analogous points with a difference in sensitivity.

Background: The lockdown due to Covid-19 has impacted certain aspects of cognition among medical students. Aim: To explore the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on metamemory among medical students studying in a private medical college in Pakistan. Study design: Experimental study. Methodology: This study with enrolled students (n=233) was carried out after ethical review committee’s (ERC) approval at CMH Kharian Medical College (CKMC), Physiology Department, Kharian-Pakistan. Both male and female medical students were enrolled. In phase 1, the students reported to the Physiology laboratory where age and gender were recorded. Metamemory was measured using the Multi-factorial Memory Questionnaire (MMQ)-Satisfaction scale using the Baycrest Centre protocols for its administration and scoring. Data was analyzed by SPSS software, version 21. MMQ-Satisfaction score was presented as mean±SD. Statistical significance was taken at p value <0.05. Results: Among males mean±SD for Pre Covid-19 MMQ was 43.24±9.58 while mean±SD for Post Covid-19 MMQ males was 55.32±6.01. Significant difference was seen between Pre & Post Covid-19 MMQ scores with p-value of <0.000. Conclusion: We concluded that significant difference was seen between Pre & Post Covid-19 MMQ scores with p-value of <0.000. However, means among all age groups were significantly equal with the others in Pre & Post COVID-19 MMQ. Similarly, means were significantly equal among both genders for Pre & Post COVID-19 MMQ. 7086 Background: The HRQOL of patients (pts) with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has not been adequately delineated across patient, disease and treatment characteristics. We evaluated HRQOL of CLL pts undergoing treatment in the United States (US) by age, gender and line of therapy. Methods: Data were collected in Connect CLL, a prospective observational US registry. Physicians provided data on demographics, clinical characteristics and line of therapy at enrollment. HRQOL was self-reported by pts at enrollment using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Leukemia, an instrument that yields a leukemia-specific total HRQOL score (FACT-Leu) and a cancer-specific total HRQOL score (FACT-G). Mean total scores were analyzed by line of therapy, age and gender. Statistical significance was ascertained by ANOVA using SAS 9.2. Multivariate analyses were conducted to assess the relative association of line of therapy, age and gender with HRQOL. Results: Among 1,252 pts enrolled from 161 geographically diverse centers (90% community, 8% academic, 2% veterans/military), pts were predominantly male (63%), white (89%) with mean age 69 yrs. Pts were categorized by line of therapy at enrollment: First 61%, Second 18%, Third 11%, Higher 9%; and by age group: <65 33%, 65-74 35%, 75+ 32%. Univariate analyses suggested that the total FACT-Leu score was significantly better in men than women (P=0.004); in pts aged 65-74 vs younger or older pts (P=0.033); and in pts initiating first-line treatment vs pts receiving subsequent treatments (P=0.0002). Similar results were found with the FACT-G score except that gender differences were not statistically significant. Multivariate analysis confirmed that line of therapy (P=0.007), gender (P<0.0001), and age group (P=0.039) were each associated with significant differences in the FACT-Leu total score. Conclusions: Results from the Connect CLL Registry indicate that HRQOL is better among pts initiating first-line therapy compared to pts initiating subsequent treatments, and that this remains true when age and gender are considered. Future analyses should determine how HRQOL may change over time relative to treatment and treatment response.

Background and Aim: Interferon-induced helicase (IFIH1) is a gene locus that has been recently defined as a candidate for susceptibility to generalized vitiligo (GV). The objectives of this study were to assess the association of IFIH1 gene, rs2111485 and rs1990760 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with susceptibility to GV and the autoimmune diseases accompanying to GV. Materials and Methods: We prospectively studied GV patients and frequency-matched healthy controls by age and gender. The genotypes of the participants were determined for rs1990760 and rs2111485 SNPs of IFIH1. Dominant, recessive and additive models were evaluated for each SNP adjusted for age and gender. Results: The patients and their controls were demonstrated to be in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for SNP1 (2q24.2, rs1990760, IFIH1, T/C) and SNP2 (2q24.2, rs2111485, IFIH1, G/A) respectively (all p> 0.7). For SNP1 every T allel addition was significantly associated with 1.53 times protectiveness in terms of vitiligo risk (P= 0.033). As for SNP2 every G allel addition was associated with 1.42 times protectiveness, close to statistical significance (P= 0.100). Conclusions: We detected that for SNP1 each T allel and for SNP2 each G allel are protective in terms of vitiligo development. Hereby, we confirmed that IFIH1 gene locus has a role in GV susceptibility. Keywords: Vitiligo, single nucleotide polymorphism, genes

Abstract Background The significance of metaphors for the experience of cancer has been the topic of extensive previous research, with “Battle” and “Journey” metaphors standing out as key. Adaptation to the patient’s use of metaphor is generally believed to be an important aspect of person-centered care, especially in palliative care. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of metaphors in blogs written in Swedish by people living with advanced cancer and explore possible patterns associated with individuals, age and gender. Methods The study is based on a dataset totaling 2,602,479 words produced some time during the period 2007–2016 by 27 individuals diagnosed with advanced cancer. Both qualitative and quantitative procedures were used, and the findings are represented as raw frequencies as well as normalized frequencies per 10,000 words. Our general approach was exploratory and descriptive. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze statistical significance. Results Our results confirm the strong foothold of “Journey” and “Battle” metaphors. “Imprisonment” and “Burden” metaphors were also used by the majority of the individuals. The propensity to use metaphors when describing the cancer experience was found to differ extensively across the individuals. However, individuals were not found to opt for one conceptualization over the other but tended to draw on several different metaphor domains when conceptualizing their experience. Socio-demographic factors such as age or gender were not found to be strong predictors of metaphor choice in this limited study. Conclusions Using a range of different metaphors allows individuals with advanced cancer to highlight different aspects of their experience. The presence of metaphors associated with “Journey”, “Battle”, “Imprisonment” and “Burden” across individuals could be explained by the fact that the bloggers are part of a culturally consistent cohort, despite variations in age, sex and cancer form. Awareness of metaphors commonly used by patients can enhance health professionals’ capacity to identify metaphorical patterns and develop a common language grounded in the patients’ own metaphor use, which is an important requisite for person-centered palliative care.

Abstract Background: To quantitative evaluation of parafoveal microvasculature changes in eyes with exudative circumscribed choroidal haemangioma (CCH) compared with age- and gender-controlled healthy eyes. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, case-control study. 82 eyes of eighty-two subjects including 41 eyes of forty-one subjects in the exudative CCH group and 41 eyes of forty-one subjects in the age- and gender-controlled healthy eye group were enrolled in this study. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) was performed in each subject, and the capillary density (CD) of superficial plexus, deep capillary plexus, and the choriocapillaris as well as the area of foveal avascular zone (FAZ) were noted and analyzed between two groups. Results: The CD of the superficial plexus (44.51 ± 3.58 % vs 47.93 ± 2.94%) and deep plexus (47.75 ± 5.60% vs 52.66 ± 5.04%) of retina as well as the vessel density of choriocapillaris (54.42 ± 6.36% vs 61.83 ± 3.65%) significantly decreased in eyes with exudative CCH compared with age- and gender-controlled healthy eyes (all P < 0.001). Although we found that the FAZ areas in the exudative CCH group was larger than that of the healthy eye control group (0.30 ± 0.11mm2 vs 0.27 ± 0.87mm2), however, no statistical significance was found between two groups (P = 0.164).Conclusions: OCTA is a rapid, non-invasive, high-resolution procedure with which could monitor the parafoveal microvasculature changes in eyes with exudative CCH. We found that not only the CD of the superficial plexus and deep plexus but also the CD of choriocapillaris significantly decreased in eyes with exudative CCH compared with age- and gender-controlled healthy eye group.Trial registration: This study was registered on the https://www.clinicaltrials.gov (trial registration number: NCT04449900)
