Abstract This paper aimed mainly to investigate the relationships between Brazilian Loneliness Scale (UCLA-BR) and the levels of depression, anxiety and stress in Brazilian college students. These concepts were assessed using validated scales (Patient Health Questionnaire - PHQ-9, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - DASS-21, Beck Anxiety Inventory - BAI and Lipp Stress Symptom Inventory - ISSL). A total of 325 college students participated and responded all the instruments. Descriptive, correlational and group differences analyzes were conducted. The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress varied depending on the instrument used. UCLA-BR presented evidence of validity based on relationships with depression, anxiety and stress, especially depression (assessed by DASS-21). Analysis of measurement scales can help to understand aspects of college students’ mental health.

The present study examines a new factor structure and the convergent validity of the Portuguese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) with college students. This measure has been used to evaluate depressive symptoms in adults. The total sample included 958 college students. Data were collected from a Web-based survey carried out in schools forming the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra. Students completed the PHQ-9 and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) subscales as convergent measures. Results pointed to good fit of a second-order factor model with three first-order factors (somatic, cognitive and affective dimensions of depression). Strong positive correlations were found between PHQ-9 scores and HADS depression and BSI depression subscales. Our findings reinforce the PHQ-9 as a valid tool in higher education settings. Future studies should re-examine the dimensional structure of the tool considering its implications for the clinical interpretation of the measure.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare psychosocial distress in areas in Korea with different prevalence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) after validating a questionnaire on psychological experiences and stress associated with the disease outbreak.Methods: Using an online-based survey, psychosocial distress associated with COVID-19 was investigated in three regions, which were selected according to their prevalence of COVID-19. A total of 1,500 people from an online public panel in the three regions participated in the study. The questionnaire included sociodemographic information, psychosocial experience and stress related to COVID-19, and the perceived stress scale (PSS), patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and generalized anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7). Those questionnaires and scales were compared by level of prevalence of COVID-19 after validating the questionnaire on psychosocial distress associated with COVID-19.Results: The 19 items on psychosocial experience associated with COVID-19 comprised 5 subscales, with favorable Cronbach's α ranging from 0.69 to 0.88. Six stress items related to COVID-19 had a Cronbach's α of 0.79. Disturbance in eating and sleeping, difficulty with outside activities, stress from COVID-19, and PSS scores were greater in the areas where COVID-19 was highly prevalent. Economic problems, daily activity changes, and anger toward society were higher in the higher-prevalence regions.Discussion: Psychosocial distress associated with COVID-19 was closely related to the prevalence of the disease in the areas where participants lived. Psychosocial interventions for distress associated with COVID-19 should be developed and prepared for people during this lengthy pandemic.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> COVID-19, a continuously emerging human-to-human infectious disease, has exerted a significant impact on the mental health of college students. However, little is known regarding the variations in the mental health issues experienced by college students during the peak versus reopening stages of the COVID-19 epidemic in China. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> To assess these issues, an online longitudinal survey was conducted via a WeChat applet. Undergraduates (<i>n</i> = 300) were recruited from 26 universities throughout Jinan in February 2020 (T1 – the epidemic peak stage) and in January 2021 (T2 – the society reopening stage). Their mental status was determined using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 item, and the Insomnia Severity Index. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Of the original 300 college students recruited for this survey, 294 responses at T1 and 285 at T2 were analyzed. Compared with responses obtained at T1, college students at T2 showed a greater prevalence of depression (65.3 vs. 51.0%; <i>p</i> = 0.001) and anxiety (47.7 vs. 38.1%, <i>p</i> = 0.019), and experienced more severe depression (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001) and anxiety (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). Both males (<i>p</i> = 0.03) and females (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.01) showed higher levels of depression at T2 versus T1, while no differences were obtained with regard to anxiety and insomnia. At T1, Grade 4 students showed greater levels of depression (<i>p</i> = 0.005) and anxiety (<i>p</i> = 0.008) than that of Grade 1 students. While at T2, only greater levels of depression (<i>p</i> = 0.004) were present when compared with that of Grade 1 students. Additionally, Grade 4 college students demonstrated a greater prevalence of depression at T2 versus T1 (<i>p</i> = 0.03), but no statistically differences were present for anxiety and insomnia. No statistically significant differences were obtained among the 4 grades of college students for insomnia at either the T1 or T2. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> With progression of the COVID-19 epidemic, college students showed increasing levels of depression and anxiety, with Grade 4 college students being most seriously affected. It is imperative that intervention strategies be implemented to mitigate against these mental health issues resulting from the COVID-19 epidemic.

Background: Aim: To assess cases of depression in children. Methods:Eighty- nine children age ranged 6-15 years of either gender were included. The level of depression among children was determined with Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9).Results:Age group 6-10 years had 24, 10-12 years had 30 and 12-15 years had 35 children. Boys were 55 and girls were 34. Residence was urban in 39 and rural in 50. Family type was joint in 52 and nuclear in 37. A significant difference was observed (P< 0.05). 35% not at all felt little interest or pleasure in doing things, 52% not at all felt down depressed, 46% not at all felt trouble falling or staying asleep, 34% not at all felt tired, 60% not at all felt bad about yourself, 68% not at all felt trouble concentrating on things, 70% not at all felt moving or speaking so slowly that other people could have noticed, 82% not at all felt thoughts that you would be better off dead or of hurting yourself in the some way. Level of depression was not at all in 12%, minimal in 35%, mild in 42%, moderate in 10% and severe in 1%. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).Conclusions:Most of the children had mild and minimal depression. Most of the children had feeling tired.

Zusammenfassung Hintergrund Mit Beginn der SARS-CoV-2-Pandemie und der nachfolgenden Maßnahmen zu ihrer Eindämmung im Frühjahr 2020 ist rasch die Frage nach Auswirkungen der Beschränkung sozialer Kontakte auf die psychische Gesundheit der Bevölkerung aufgekommen. Einsamkeit beschreibt eine wahrgenommene Qualität der eigenen Kontakte und Beziehungen zu anderen Menschen. Zahlreiche Studien haben einen Zusammenhang von Einsamkeit mit somatischen und psychischen Erkrankungen aufgezeigt. Ziel Auswertung der Häufigkeit von Einsamkeit und ihrer Beziehung zu Angst- und Depressionssymptomen in der ersten Welle der Pandemie im Mai 2020. Methoden Zwischen 2014 und 2019 hat die NAKO-Gesundheitsstudie 205.000 Personen im Alter zwischen 20 und 69 Jahren in 18 Studienzentren in Deutschland rekrutiert und untersucht. Die nachfolgende Zweituntersuchung musste aufgrund der Pandemie im Frühjahr 2020 unterbrochen werden. In dieser Zeit wurde ein COVID-19-bezogener Fragebogen entwickelt und an alle Teilnehmenden verschickt. Ausgewertet wurden die 113.928 Fragebögen, die innerhalb der ersten 30 Tage zurückgeschickt wurden. Einsamkeit wurde mit der 3‑Item UCLA Loneliness Scale, Angst und Depression mit den PHQ-9- und GAD-7-Skalen des Patient Health Questionnaire erhoben. Ergebnisse Im Mai 2020 nahmen sich 31,7 % der NAKO-Teilnehmenden als einsam wahr. Frauen und junge Menschen waren häufiger als Männer und ältere Personen betroffen. Mit steigender Wahrnehmung von Einsamkeit nahm der Schweregrad von Depressions- und Angstsymptomen stetig zu. Einsame Personen während der Pandemie hatten bereits zur NAKO-Basisuntersuchung mehr depressive und Angstsymptome angegeben als NAKO-Teilnehmende, die sich in der Pandemie nicht einsam fühlten. Schlussfolgerung In der NAKO-Gesundheitsstudie zeigte sich während der ersten Phase der Pandemie eine Zunahme von Einsamkeit und ihr deutlicher Zusammenhang mit schlechterer, psychischer Gesundheit.

Background. A steady rise in the prevalence of depression among college students has negatively affected student quality of life. This study investigates the feasibility and acceptability of a Web-based model, including Skype, to screen and provide psychiatric consultation to depressed college students.Methods. Students completed the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) online; those who screened positive (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) or endorsed any level of suicidal ideation were offered Web-based psychiatric consultation using Skype. After the consultation, students filled out a 7-item satisfaction questionnaire to report on the acceptability of this Web-based method.Results. A total of 972 students consented to the online depression screening and 285 screened positive. Of those, 69 students consented and 17 students successfully completed the psychiatric consultation via Skype. Thirteen (76.4%) students found the interview useful in helping them understand their depression. Fifteen (88.2%) students thought that psychologists and psychiatrists could successfully see patients via videoconferencing.Conclusions. Current online technologies can provide depression screening and psychiatric consultation to college students; those who participated reported a positive experience. Future studies will need to address the low levels of participation among college students and attract students who are underserved, as well as use a videoconferencing platform that adequately protects data confidentiality.

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to affect millions worldwide and has posed unique challenges to healthcare professionals. Caring for patients during a pandemic may have negative impacts on their mental health. We describe the first part of a study using a mixed-method sequential explanatory design (QUANT→QUAL). This quantitative part examines the experiences of healthcare professionals during the pandemic in a University Hospital in Italy. We performed a cross-sectional hospital-based survey involving all healthcare professionals between 19 May 2020 and 3 June 2020. Perceived Stress Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire, and General Anxiety Disorder scores were calculated, in order to assess how the pandemic emergency changed the occupational and social habits of the healthcare professionals. The mean age of the 275 respondents was 47 years and females accounted for 80.2%. A total of 29.8% had a Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) score ≥25, 22.9% scored ≥15 on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scale, and 17.1% scored ≥15 on the General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) scale. Stress symptoms were mostly manifested for interviewees over 55, females, those who live far from their family, those who have only one child, and those who had a qualification lower than high school or who had a medical specialization. Our findings show a relevant level of psychological distress, anxiety, and depression in up to 30% of the sample, highlighting a significant psychological burden in all professionals.
