Abstract Introduction Understanding the effects of periodontal therapy is essential in performance and satisfaction of partially dentate patients. Objective To assess the effect of subgingival periodontal treatment in performance and masticatory satisfaction and ability as reported by partially dentate patients with untreated chronic periodontitis. Materials and method Patients were given nonsurgical periodontal treatment and masticatory satisfaction, ability, and performance were evaluated before and after treatment. Performance was assessed based on sieving chewed standardized chewable material, while satisfaction and ability were analyzed using a questionnaire based on OHIP-EDENT. Result Mean numbers of functional tooth units were 10.36 ± 1.43 anterior and 6.73 ± 0.79 posterior teeth. Masticatory performance did not vary significantly (p = 0.075), and mean particle sizes before and after treatment were 4.23 ± 1.84 mm and 3.90 ± 0.75 mm, respectively. Overall satisfaction and ability scores after treatment were higher (p > 0.05) compared with scores prior to the periodontal intervention. Conclusion Periodontal treatment improves masticatory satisfaction and ability with no effect on performance.

Background: Tooth loss can disrupt the mastication process. Mastication disorders limit the amount of food a person consumes, affecting nutrition. The number of functional tooth units (FTUs) can affect nutritional status, measured using the body mass index (BMI). Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyse the effect of the number of FTUs on the BMI in the elderly. Methods: This research was conducted in four villages in the Jember Regency. The number of subjects was 189, aged 45 years and over. The number of FTUs was calculated based on the anterior and posterior teeth that have contact with the antagonist and the BMI using the BMI formula. The data was analysed using a linear regression test; the level of significance is 0.005. Results: A simple linear regression test showed that there was significant correlation between FTU and BMI (p=0.366). Conclusion: The number of FTUs affects BMI; the higher the number of FTUs, the greater the BMI.

The erosion of an axial fan was investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. A computer program was developed to predict particle trajectories and erosion through turbomachines. It also accounts for different boundary conditions and stage interfaces. The governing equations of the particle motion were solved using Runge-Kutta Fehlberg technique in a given flowfield. The tracking of particles and their locations are based on the finite element interpolation method. The methodology was applied to an axial fan with inlet guide vanes (IGV). The flowfield was solved using the TASCflow code. The number of particles seeded upstream of the IGV was determined from experimentally measured profile concentration, with respect to a random distribution of particle sizes. The erosion of the blades and changes to the chord and tip clearances were also measured. The concentration profiles and velocities of the particle were measured with a laser transit anemometer and used as input to the trajectory code. The fan performance was measured before and after sand ingestion to assess the degradation in performance due to the eroded geometry

Background: Periodontal therapy consists of eliminating the inflammation, treating periodontal pockets, motivating the patient for oral hygiene, and, if necessary, for surgical treatment. Recently, the application of a diode laser is widely being investigated for periodontal disease treatment. Objective: The analysis and evaluation of the clinical and biochemical impact of diode laser periodontal treatment, compared to either surgical or non-surgical, therapy, was the aim of this study. Methods: The study involved 80 patients older than 18 with at least 20 teeth. Evaluation of periodontal parameters was done conveniently on a single-rooted tooth (incisive, canine, premolar) on six surfaces, before the start of periodontal therapy, and after three, and six months. The laser used in the study was a diode laser with a wavelength of 980 nm. Digital X-rays were taken for bone level evaluation before and after the treatment. The presence of a bone destruction mediator (Matrix metalloproteinase-8 - MMP-8) was evaluated by the dipstick immunoassay test. Biochemical analysis and radiographic measurements were evaluated at the baseline and six months after the treatment. The statistical analysis included χ2-test and one-way ANOVA. Results: The results of this study showed that diode laser treatment was more effective in reducing periodontal clinical parameters, lowering MMP-8 levels and reducing the bone loss, compared to the group treated with scaling and root planning, or with a surgical approach. Conclusion: Diode laser may be considered as an effective alternative for periodontal treatment, with benefits in clinical and biochemical parameters.

Background. Several studies have focused on the association between periodontitis and systemic implications; however, the biological mechanisms of the immune responses before and after periodontal therapy involved in this relationship, such as phagocytic functions, remain unclear. Objectives. This study aimed to investigate whether periodontal treatment improves the phagocytic function of blood monocytes in patients with severe periodontitis. Materials and Methods. A nonrandomized sample of 55 participants was enrolled in the study. Two groups were studied: control (n = 27, healthy subjects without periodontal disease) and patients (n = 28, individuals with periodontitis). Treatment of periodontitis (scaling and root planing) was performed until the clinical resolution of periodontal pockets and inflammation. The following clinical periodontal parameters were assessed: probing depth, clinical attachment level, visible plaque index (PI), and gingival bleeding on probing index before and after mechanical periodontal treatment. The phagocytic index (PhI) and nitro blue tetrazolium test (NBT) were assessed before and immediately after the end of treatment. Results. Periodontitis induced impaired phagocytosis by monocytes. Phagocytosis at baseline was significantly lower in periodontitis patients [median, 13.2 (range of 7.1 to 20.8) and 60.7 (40.6 to 88.6)] than in controls [27.4 (15.5 to 40.5)] and 98 (68.2 to 122.9)] for nonsensitized or sensitized samples, respectively. After supportive therapy, patients showed a significant enhancement of phagocytic functions [33.7 (14.6 to 53.2) and 108.5 (99.6 to 159.5)] for nonsensitized and sensitized samples, respectively. Periodontal treatment increased the phagocytic capacity to a level similar to that observed in the control group and improved the capacity of phagocytes to produce superoxide anion. Conclusions. The results suggest that periodontal therapy in patients with severe periodontitis provides a state of homeostasis due to the reestablishment of phagocytic function and increased production of NBT (Regional Registry No. RBR-24T799; Universal Registry No. U1111-1133-5512).

Background: Periodontal disease is considered as a diabetes complication and has been suggested that periodontal treatment plus antibiotics should reduce glycated hemoglobin A, by reducing local production of pro inflammatory substances. Objective: To evaluate diabetic patients with periodontal disease under periodontal treatment plus topical antibiotics and reduction of  HbA1c, compared to diabetic patients under periodontal treatment without antibiotics. Materials and Methods: Using PUBMED, SCOPUS, WEB OF SCIENCE, EMBASE and Google Scholar data bases, were screened documents from 2008 to 2018. The documents included were the clinical studies, which included non-surgical periodontal treatment plus topical antibiotics, whose outcomes included the HbA1c report. Two independent researchers evaluate title; abstract and bias risk with Downs Black scale and Cochrane tool. Documents with a score higher than 15 on average by the two evaluators were included. Results: Five articles, which find inclusion criteria, were identified. Two documents failed to demonstrate statistically significant effect when compared to non-surgical periodontal therapy alone. Conclusion: In general a modest reduction of HbA1c was identified when using antibiotic therapy.

Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate whether cooled floor pads combined with chilled drinking water could alleviate negative impacts of heat stress on lactating sows. Thirty sows (Landrace × Yorkshire, Parity = 1 to 6) were housed in individual farrowing stalls in two rooms with temperatures being controlled at 29.4°C (0700–1900 hours) and 23.9°C (1900–0700 hours). Sows in one room (Cool), but not in the other room (Control) were provided cooled floor pads (21–22°C) and chilled drinking water (13–15°C). Behavior of sows (15 sows/treatment) was video recorded during farrowing, and days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 after farrowing. Videos were viewed continuously to register the birth time of each piglet, from which total farrowing duration and birth intervals were calculated. The number of drinking bouts and the duration of each drinking bout were registered for each sow through viewing videos continuously for 2 h (1530–1730 hours) each video-recording day. Postures (lying laterally, lying ventrally, sitting, and standing) were recorded by scanning video recordings at 5-min intervals for 24 h each video-recording day, and time budget for each posture was calculated. Rectal temperature and respiration rate were measured for all sows the day before and after farrowing, and then once weekly. Sow and litter performance was recorded. Data were analyzed using the Glimmix procedure of SAS. The cooling treatment did not affect sow behavior or litter performance. Sows in the Cool room had lower rectal temperature (P = 0.03) and lower respiration rate (P < 0.001), consumed more feed (P = 0.03), tended to have reduced weight loss (P = 0.07), and backfat loss (P = 0.07) during lactation than sows in the Control room. As lactation progressed, sows increased drinking frequency (P < 0.001) and time spent lying ventrally (P < 0.0001), standing (P < 0.001), and sitting (P < 0.0001), and decreased time spent lying laterally (P < 0.0001) in both Cool and Control rooms. While cooled floor pads combined with chilled drinking water did not affect sow behavior, they did alleviate heat stress partially, as indicated by decreased rectal temperature, respiration rate, weight, and backfat loss, and increased feed intake in lactating sows.

Salvadora persica (SP) extract, displays very valuable biotherapeutic capacities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory effects. Numerous investigations have studied the pharmacologic actions of SP in oral disease therapies but its promising outcomes in periodontal health and treatment are not yet entirely described. The current study has been planned to analyze the reported effects of SP as a support to periodontal therapy to indorse regeneration and healing. In consort with clinical trials, in vitro investigations show the advantageous outcomes of SP adjunctive to periodontal treatment. Yet, comprehensive supplementary preclinical and clinical investigations at molecular and cellular levels are indispensable to reveal the exact therapeutic mechanisms of SP and its elements for periodontal health and therapy.

Time-restricted feeding (TRF) is becoming a popular way of eating in physically active populations, despite a lack of research on metabolic and performance outcomes as they relate to the timing of food consumption in relation to the time of exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if the timing of feeding/fasting after exercise training differently affects muscle metabolic flexibility and response to an acute bout of exercise. Male C57BL/6 mice were randomized to one of three groups for 8 weeks. The control had ad libitum access to food before and after exercise training. TRF-immediate had immediate access to food for 6 h following exercise training and the TRF-delayed group had access to food 5-h post exercise for 6 h. The timing of fasting did not impact performance in a run to fatigue despite TRF groups having lower hindlimb muscle mass. TRF-delayed had lower levels of muscle HSL mRNA expression and lower levels of PGC-1α expression but displayed no changes in electron transport chain enzymes. These results suggest that in young populations consuming a healthy diet and exercising, the timing of fasting may not substantially impact metabolic flexibility and running performance.
