Introduction: This article presents the results of a research whose objective was to verify the prevalence of the perception reports regarding quality of life of library attendees in the public libraries in the Brazilian capital Federal District (FD) and the surrounding region and to analyse the factors related to dissatisfaction. Methods: An epidemiological transversal study was conducted in 592 individuals aged above 12 years old through the application of the WHOQOL-BREF/WHO questionnaire. Results: Higher frequencies of dissatisfaction were observed among women with ages above 25, with lower personal income and lower educational level. Dissatisfaction regarding the physical domain was more prevalent in the surrounding region than in the FD. Under the psychological domain, dissatisfaction predominated in people in the FD. Negative feelings, concentration difficulties and dissatisfaction regarding personal safety were referred by more than 25% of participants in both regions. Regarding the environment domain, lack of money and of leisure opportunities were the main complaints. In spite of these findings, interviewees referred being very satisfied with their health and quality of life. Conclusions: The results can be a sign that the quality of life in the study region is in alert level. A careful look at these data is needed to identify alternatives to change this situation, with effective actions for Health Promotion and development strategies for the study area. A planning and an intervention in the area of health education in public libraries is recommended, since these are very important social loci, that can be engaged in health promotion and disease prevention actions in the communities.

= The aim of this paper is to present the results of the research on the needs of unemployed citizens in the Osijek-Baranja County with the purpose of improving the knowledge of advancing the services, programs, and activities of public libraries, as well as the quality of life of unemployed citizens. Research was conducted using the random sampling method (N=250). The article presents a picture of the situation before the global COVID-19 health pandemic, the crisis that affected the whole world. The collected data was statistically analyzed in SPSS, the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, using correlation and descriptive analysis on two groups and was thereafter expressed in percentages. The most important results of the research showed that the selected citizens have a need for lifelong learning, but that at the same time the largest percentage of them do not have the need to fulfill the named needs in a library space. Most pronounced needs of tested citizens are the needs to learn English and German; computer and technical skills, the need to perfect communication skills; perfecting additional social skills through teamwork, familiarizing oneself with workspace etiquette, gaining organizational skills, promotional skills, learning nonverbal communication or body language. The results show that public libraries do not allow a portion of the subjects (41.6%) to fulfill their needs, despite them having a membership to the public library and having different needs for lifelong learning. Likewise, results show that not all public libraries within the Osijek-Baranja County are open to all users. Socially excluded unemployed citizens believe that the public library can help develop communities and unemployed citizens alike.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the relationship between student participation in associations and the way they perceive their quality of life. Methods: a study of one hundred and sixty students of Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) Dentistry course belonging to the first, fifth, eighth and tenth semesters in Florianopolis, SC, Brazil. The theoretical basis is the Public Health approach, that, under the wider concept of health, considers associations as health promoters. A sociodemographic questionnaire, a questionnaire on associativism and the WHOQOL-Bref were used for data collection. Results: the results indicate that the participation of Dentistry students in associations improves self-evaluation of quality of life, satisfaction in personal relationships and reduces the frequency of negative feelings. Conclusion: students who participate in voluntary associations are associated with a better quality of life, promoting a more adequate professional formation. In this way, the participation of students in associations should be stimulated by the University. This perspective of analysis values social aspects in the perspective of health and can be a pioneering study in a field where there is still much to be studied, and can bring substantial contributions to the field of collective health and health as a whole.

Abstract Chronic diseases of the population have been a global challenge for public health. Considered a new field of study, health literacy (LS) is the ability to obtain and understand basic health information and services needed to make health decisions. Worse outcomes, such as less control of chronic diseases, have been associated with LS. Thus, the objective of the study was to investigate the association of LS, clinical and behavioral conditions in patients with chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) users of the public health service in Brazil. It was a cross-sectional study, conducted from July to December 2019, with 238 adult users of the public health service, in a random sample, from 10 basic health units, in Piracicaba-SP, Brazil. A questionnaire was applied to obtain socioeconomic, behavioral, and LS data (Suka et al, 2013). The outcome was LS (high, medium and low) and the independent variables: CNCDs (diabetes, systemic blood pressure), clinical conditions (pressure, tooth loss, pain, visible plaque and insertion loss), behaviors (brushing, use of dental floss), determinants (type and frequency of service use) and self-perception (oral health and quality of life) in health. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, and the Chi-Square test, based on a conceptual model adapted for LS (5% significance level). They had low levels of literacy 35.3% (n = 84), average 35.7% (n = 85), and high 29.0% (n = 69). Low LS levels were associated with older individuals, low education, less brushing and flossing, irregular use of dental services, edentulism, pain, loss of insertion, negative self-perception of oral health and quality of life, and better systolic blood pressure index. The results of this study show the association of LS with behavioral and clinical factors, showing an important role in the health-disease process in this population. LS should be considered in health promotion policies in future studies. Key messages Our study shows the importance of health literacy, and its association with health outcomes in individuals with chronic non-communicable diseases. Within the important global epidemiological panorama of chronic diseases, better understanding the role of LS is important, and it can collaborate with health promotion strategies for this population.

This study was the first institution-wide health promotion program in Taiwan to apply the five priority areas for taking action in public health highlighted in the Ottawa Charter for diabetes patients. We aimed to improve the quality of home care received by diabetic patients by training health care professionals in health promotion. This program consisted of developing personal skills, reorienting health services, strengthening community actions, creating supportive environments, and building healthy public policy. It was applied in the Yunlin Christian Hospital located in central Taiwan from August 2011 to November 2011. A health-promoting education course consisting of weight control, diabetes care, and quality management for diabetes was developed and applied to all 323 hospital staff. Then, hospital staff volunteers and diabetes patients were recruited to participate in the program. A total of 61 staff volunteers and 90 diabetes patients were involved in this study. Staff volunteers were trained to participate in communities to provide care and guidance to patients with diabetes. The World Health Organization Quality of Life(WHOQOL)-BREF-Taiwan Version questionnaires were investigated before and after implementation of this program for the patients. A health-promoting lifestyle profile questionnaire was filled by the staff. The investigation data were then analyzed by statistical methods. The diabetes patients experienced a significant increase in their satisfaction with health and health-related quality of life as well as significant improvements in health-promotion and self-management behaviors (p < 0.05). In addition, staff volunteers significantly consumes food from the five major groups than the other staff (p < 0.05). Various improvements in health-promoting behaviors were observed amongst the hospital staff and the diabetic patients. Our project could be a reference for other medical organizations to implement an institution-wide health-promotion program for diabetic patients.

Public services represent an important dimension of quality of society, as they create the contextual conditions for people to further their quality of life. Romanian public administration reform has brought about a constant institutional transformation, which has influenced both the specific features and the quality of the services. This article aims to analyse trends regarding the perceived quality of public services in Romania, in European comparative perspective, using the data of the European Quality of Life Survey (2003–2016). The article aims to understand the low satisfaction with public services in Romania against the background of the public service reform measures taken by government in this period. The article describes the context of Romanian public administration and public service reform, the most important public policy measures adopted and the most important challenges. The lack of vision in the public service reform, the partial introduction of reform elements, the permanent and, sometimes, conflicting changes are issues that may have influenced the way in which the population perceives the quality of public services. The decentralisation process of public services and the insufficient allocation of public funds for delivering such services at local level might have an impact on their quality and quantity perceived by the population. Keywords: public services; public administration reform; citizens’ satisfaction; New Public Management; New Weberianism.

Evidence on the effectiveness of workplace mental health promotion for people with disabilities is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief mental health promotion intervention in social enterprises. It had a non-blinded cluster randomized controlled trial design with follow-up one and four months after the intervention. In total 196 employees agreed to participate (86 intervention and 110 control). Empowerment was the main outcome; secondary outcomes were resilience, palliative behavior, determinants of four coping strategies of mental health, quality of life, and life satisfaction. A brief participant satisfaction survey was conducted after the intervention. No significant intervention effect on empowerment was found. However, at one month follow-up, significant favorable effects were found on perceived social support for coping strategies for mental health and on palliative behavior. At four months follow-up, favorable intervention effects were found on quality of life, but unfavorable effects were found on unjustified worrying. In addition, the intervention was well received by the employees. This brief intervention might be a promising first step to improve mental health in people with disabilities working in social enterprises. Nevertheless, additional monitoring by professionals and managers working in the organizations might be needed to maintain these effects.
