ABSTRACT Objective: to know how the nurse's "use of self" occurs in a surgical in-patient unit from the perspective of ergology. Method: a qualitative case study based on historical and dialectical materialism and the theoretical reference of ergology. The study participants were 12 nurses working in a surgical unit of a high complexity hospital. The evidence sources for the data production were systematic observation, document analysis and semi-structured interview. The data were produced between March and September 2015. Data were analyzed according to the thematic content analysis. Results: The thematic category: Dramatic "use of self" in the work of the nurse in a surgical in-patient unit, emerged from the analysis. It was evidenced that nurses organize themselves in different ways to carry out the work process, concretizing the use of themselves in several situations, which is related to the management of care. It should be noted that, although there is prescribed work, the knowledge, experience and values influence the use of self by these workers, with a view to renormalizing work. Conclusion: the nurses in a surgical in-patient unit develop their work based on previous norms, as well as their knowledge, experience and subjectivity, effective use of self, aiming to renormalize activities, exercising autonomy for the improvement of care.

There has been an increased public interest and awareness in waqf practices which is one of the most effective social finance instruments in Islam. History has proven that good governance practices affect the effective use of waqf property which has become one of the mechanisms for wealth creation in a country. Unfortunately, most of institutional mutawalli are facing challenges in their governance practices, leaving the waqf properties not fully utilized for the benefit of society. Thus, this chapter aims to examine in-depth the utilization of waqf property and governance practices of an institutional mutawalli under State Islamic Religious Councils (SRIC) in Malaysia. A qualitative method applied in this case study where formal and semi-structured interview conducted on a focus group involving those in leadership positions such as CEO and the top management of the institutional mutawalli. The first part of discussion is on governance practices of the institutional mutawalli, followed by discussion on their experiences and current execution in utilizing the use of waqf properties. This study identified the crucial characteristic in the waqf property. Several recommendations are made on how to improve the effective use of waqf property and best governance practice that can be implemented to help the institutional mutawalli attain their growth performance.

Palavras-chave: Tutor, Educação a Distância, Bernstein, Saberes docentes, Recontextualização.Dialogue with Bernstein and the Tutors of the EaD AbstractThe pedagogic structuring of Distance Learning has been analyzed by different approaches, providing a considerable potential for researches. Therfore, the objective was to analyze how the distance tutor re-contextualizes his teaching knowledge in the field of Distance Learning. The research was carried out at the Federal University of Pelotas in the Distance Math Teaching Course. The proposed research had a qualitative approach, being defined as a case study. The subjects researched were fifty distance tutors from the course. The data was collected through online questionnaires, semi-structured interview and a non-systematic observation of the tutors practice, and were later analyzed through Content Analysis and Bernstein s theory. The main results obtained were that the re-contextualization of teacher knowledge in the tutoring practice occurs by the restructuring and reorganization of the contents; by the type of communication held with the students, mainly written - feedback; by the differentiated way in which the materials and activities need to be presented and by the continuous contact between the tutor and the student. The re-contextualization occurs in the affectivity and interaction with the student which happens virtually and in a more private setting, mediated by the technologies. Keywords: Tutor, Distance Learning, Bernstein, Teaching Knowledge, Re-contextualization.

The study is about international kinship care arrangements in Ethiopia, focusing on Ethiopian children who applied for an Australian Orphan Relative Visa. A qualitative case study research method was used. Study participants were nine children between the ages of 13-17 years and nine parents/guardians of those children. Other participants were five experts from the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth Affairs, and Federal First Instance Court. In-depth interviews were conducted using semi-structured interview guides. Additional data were also derived from observations and document reviews. Thematic data analysis was used. Data from all sources were triangulated and categorized under the themes that emerged from the data. This study identified two categories of children:  those who cannot get proper care either due to the loss of parents or due to incapacity of parents to take care of them, and those children who use international kinship arrangement as a mechanism to access a better life in Australia. Children expressed their expectations to get a better education, employment, material benefits, and living conditions after placement abroad. They also expressed concerns about how well relatives abroad will treat them. The findings further revealed that the Ministry of Women, Children, and Youth Affairs was not appropriately documenting pre-placement and post-placement information. Since international kinship care is different from international adoption in its nature, there was a lack of clarity on the legal protection that should be given to children, which puts them in a precarious socio-legal situation. This study can be used as a starting point to understand and consider international kinship care arrangements as one important alternative child care option.

The use of touchscreens as an input method on Smartphones has become the norm in the mobile phone industry. This has changed the way keys are traditionally arranged on Smartphones devices. One of these changes is on the location of “back button”. Few studies, However, have been conducted to investigate the effect of key locations on users performance and experience. Aims: In this paper, we investigate the effect of back button location on users’ experience of using Smartphones. We made a  comparison between Android Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5s. Place and Duration of Study: Participants: Sokoto State University, Sokoto, Nigeria.  between May 2017 and July 2017. Methodology: A total of 40 participants all Students of Sokoto State University participated in the study. 26 were males and 14 females. 30 owned Android Smartphones while the remaining  10 owned Apple iPhone. We used observation to observe how users navigate through Facebook and Gmail app on both iPhone and Android while paying attention to their use of the back button, the time it takes to locate these buttons and first point of reference. A semi-structured interview was also conducted on users, requesting them to compare how the difference in the location of the back button on iPhone and Android has affected their experience of navigating through both  Facebook and Gmail app. Results: The study reveals that back button key location affects the user experience of using Smartphones, keys located at the bottom edges are easier to locate and those located at top edges are harder to locate and press. Conclusion: Based on the results, the study concludes that designers of Smartphones user interfaces should strongly consider user preferences when deciding the location for back buttons and on Smartphones.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the health/functioning of the older adult who consumes psychoactive substances through the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, considering the theory of complexity. Method: Qualitative case study, with 11 older adults, held between December 2015 and February 2016 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, using interviews, documents and non-systematic observation. It was approved by the ethics committee. The analysis followed the propositions of the case study, using the complexity of Morin as theoretical basis. Results: We identified older adults who consider themselves healthy and show alterations - the alterations can be exacerbated by the use of psychoactive substances - of health/functioning expected according to the natural course of aging such as: systemic arterial hypertension; depressive symptoms; dizziness; tinnitus; harmed sleep/rest; and inadequate food and water consumption. Final consideration: The assessment of health/functioning of older adults who use psychoactive substances, guided by complex thinking, exceeds the accuracy limits to risk the understanding of the phenomena in its complexity.

Current research suggests that ketamine-assisted psychotherapy has benefit for the treatment of mental disorders. We report on the results of ketamine-assisted intensive outpatient psychotherapeutic treatment of a client with treatment-resistant, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of experiences of racism and childhood sexual abuse. The client’s presenting symptoms included hypervigilance, social avoidance, feelings of hopelessness, and intense recollections. These symptoms impacted all areas of daily functioning. Psychoeducation was provided on how untreated intergenerational trauma, compounded by additional traumatic experiences, potentiated the client’s experience of PTSD and subsequent maladaptive coping mechanisms. Ketamine was administered four times over a 13-day span as an off-label, adjunct to psychotherapy. Therapeutic interventions and orientations utilized were mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP). New skills were obtained in helping the client respond effectively to negative self-talk, catastrophic thinking, and feelings of helplessness. Treatment led to a significant reduction in symptoms after completion of the program, with gains maintained 4 months post-treatment. This case study demonstrates the effective use of ketamine as an adjunct to psychotherapy in treatment-resistant PTSD.

This paper is concerned with the socio-spatial and ethical politics of redistribution, specifically the allocation of natural resources rents from political and economic cores to the economic and geographical peripheries whence the resource originated. Based on a case study of the coal seam gas sector in Queensland's Surat Basin, this paper focuses on the operation of the Queensland State Government's regional development fund for mining and energy extraction-affected regions. Employing an environmental justice framework, we critically explore the operation of these funds in ostensibly helping constituent communities in becoming resilient to the worst effects of the ‘staples trap’. Drawing on secondary demographic and housing data for the region, as well as primary information collected from key respondents from mid-2018 to early 2019, we show that funds were distributed across all of the local government areas, and allocated to projects and places primarily on a perceived economic needs basis. However, concerns were raised with the probity of the funds’ administration. In terms of recognition justice, the participation of smaller and more remote towns and local Indigenous communities was hampered by their structural marginalisation. Procedurally, the funds were criticised for the lack of local consultation taken in the development and approval of projects. While spatially concentrated expenditure may be the most cost-effective use of public monies, we argue that grant application processes should be open, transparent and inclusive, and the outcomes cognisant of the developmental needs of smaller communities, together with the need to foster regional solidarity and coherence.

Arm recovery varies greatly among stroke survivors. Wearable surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors have been used to track recovery in research; however, sEMG is rarely used within acute and subacute clinical settings. The purpose of this case study was to describe the use of wireless sEMG sensors to examine changes in muscle activity during acute and subacute phases of stroke recovery, and understand the participant’s perceptions of sEMG monitoring. Beginning three days post-stroke, one stroke survivor wore five wireless sEMG sensors on his involved arm for three to four hours, every one to three days. Muscle activity was tracked during routine care in the acute setting through discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Three- and eight-month follow-up sessions were completed in the community. Activity logs were completed each session, and a semi-structured interview occurred at the final session. The longitudinal monitoring of muscle and movement recovery in the clinic and community was feasible using sEMG sensors. The participant and medical team felt monitoring was unobtrusive, interesting, and motivating for recovery, but desired greater in-session feedback to inform rehabilitation. While barriers in equipment and signal quality still exist, capitalizing on wearable sensing technology in the clinic holds promise for enabling personalized stroke recovery.

This article explores the use of modding as a formal tool for learning history. The article examines data from a formal analysis of Europa Universalis IV (EUIV), a survey of 331 EUIV forum participants and a case study of 18 university participants. Significant quantitative survey data indicated that 45% (149/331) of participants had modified EUIV, and of the 125 participants who responded with comments about modding, a significant number (86/125 responses or 68.8%) explained how they had learnt about history, geography or other subjects through the modding process. Closer analysis of survey and case study responses and mods reveals the variety of ways participants learnt and critiqued history through the modding process. The article discusses the data and the pedagogical affordance of modding in a few steps. First, the article briefly explores the evidence that indicates modding is popular within the EUIV gaming community. In this instance, it examines whether given the popularity of gaming practice, modding might also be seen as a new casual form of engagement with games. Second, the article reviews the modding process in EUIV and examines how both playing and creating mods may be beneficial for learning history. Modding is examined in terms of its pedagogical importance and the unique educational opportunities it may offer that are not otherwise accessible through other forms of game-based learning. Finally, the article explores how and what the case study participants learnt when they were tasked with creating and implementing playable mods to demonstrate their understanding of history. Overall, the article considers the growing importance of mods, how learners can create and represent history using mods and how mods can provide a platform for learners to develop their own critique and analysis of official history.
