ABSTRACT Considering that nematodes are quite sensitive to anthropic interventions, these organisms can be used as indicators of soil quality (SQ). The objective of this work was to study chemical and physical attributes and soil nematode as an indicator of soil quality in pasture areas with successive application of pig slurry (PS) in the Northwest of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. For this, the different areas were considered: Azevém + Tifton pasture with PS use for 14 years (A14), Azevém + Tifton pasture with use of PS for two years (A2) and native forest (NF), with a chemical and physical attributes nematofauna of the soil, with three replicates per treatment, in a randomized complete block design. The soil chemical attributes were sensitive to changes in pasture areas with successive application of PS, with increase in P content, compared to the NF area and soil OM content in the A14 area similar to that found in the NF area. In relation to the soil physical attributes, density and microporosity increased with the successive application of PS in ryegrass + tifton pasture areas, while macroporosity decreased, compared to NF areas. The nematodes of the Discocriconemella, Paratylenchus, Pratylenchus, Trichodorus, Tylenchus and free-living groups were efficient as indicators of soil quality, since they were able to evidence alterations in soil chemical and physical attributes between the ryegrass + tifton use of PS and in relation to the native forest.

Hybrid rice technology is one of the promising, sustainable, and proven technologies for increasing rice production and productivity with a yield advantage of 15–30% over modern inbred varieties. The potential of hybrid rice has so far not been exploited in Ghana. This study was undertaken to evaluate the yield potential, reaction to diseases, and physical grain attributes of some introduced hybrids. The trials were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates across three locations. Data were taken on grain yield, yield components, reaction to diseases, and grain physical characteristics. Four promising hybrids (SWARNA 2, ARGH 1501, ARGH 1502, and ARGH 1503) with a mean yield advantage of 15–20.8% over the best inbred check “AgraRice” were identified. With few exceptions, the hybrids were broadly adapted and had adequate resistance to blast and bacterial leaf blight. Most of the test hybrids had long slender grains which make them acceptable to the Ghanaian market but lacked aroma.

The phosphorus content is usually high in soils on which strawberry production occurs in west central Florida because of moderate P levels in the virgin soil and yearly applications of P by the growers. A P rate study was conducted to test the calibration of P for strawberry nursery production, and a randomized complete block design with four replicates was used. Rates of 0, 11, 22, and 33 kg/ha P were applied to a Seffner sand which had an initial soil P level of 86 mg/kg using the Mehlich II soil extractant. Soil tests routinely show P soil concentrations up to 250 mg/kg or greater with 86 mg/kg rated in the high range. In this study the P applied to the beds was cultivated into the soil and six plants of two strawberry clones (Fl 87-210 and Fl 85-4925) were set in each plot on 28 May 1991. All nutrients except P were applied as needed during the season. Leaf P content of daughter plants on 20 Aug 1991 varied from 0.23 to 0.25% among P treatments and were not different because of P rates. All marketable size daughter plants were harvested on 8 Oct 1991. The number, total wt, and average wt of daughter plants were not different because of applied P rates.

Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is a native species of the Amazon biome. This species had great economic importance due to the production of latex, used to obtain natural rubber. Seeking growth in productivity with adequate management is necessary to optimize production and increase areas with rubber trees. This study aimed to verify the physical and chemical attributes of soil under three different managements and two rubber tree clones, searching for the best alternative for the general edaphoclimatic conditions of the Cerrado biome. The experiment was installed in Palmeiras of Goiás, GO, Brazil, in a randomized block design in a 2×3 factorial arrangement, consisting of two rubber tree clones (PB 312 and RRIM 600) and three management strategies (organomineral fertilizer with poultry litter, pigeon pea as green manure, and mechanical mowing-brushcutter). Physical attributes such as soil density, soil penetration resistance, soil moisture and aggregation, soil fertility, and tree development were analyzed. Statistical analyses of variance and Tukey test were carried out in order to compare the dendrometric data and physical and chemical attributes of the soil under the different treatments applied in the inter-row of rubber trees. No significant statistical differences were found among treatments and between clones in relation to soil physical attributes. However, the soil pH reduced the use of organomineral fertilizer and the clone RRIM 600 had the highest heights.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the response of sunflower cultivars submitted to increasing levels of phosphate fertilization in two crops. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with four replicates in subdivided plots, where five doses of simple superphosphate (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1 P2O5) were allocated to the plots and three sunflower cultivars (Aguará 06, Altis 99, and Embrapa 122-V2000) were assigned to the subplots. The variables evaluated were the P content in the diagnostic leaf, number of achenes per capitulum, achene yield (kg ha-1), oil content (%) and oil yield. The phosphorus doses increased the components of production. The dose that provided the best sunflower performance varied for the different cultivars. Among the doses studied, fertilization with 100 kg ha-1 P2O5 in the 2016 agricultural crop and 150 kg ha-1 P2O5 in the 2017 agricultural crop provided the best conditions for sunflower cultivation. The cultivar Aguará 06 produced more achenes and oil than the other cultivars analyzed in the agricultural crops.

A field experiment was carried out at Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal during September, 2007 to February, 2008 to assess the response of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis cv. Kathmandu Local) to biofertilizer containing free living nitrogen fixing bacteria Azospirillum and Azotobacter and different levels of nitrogen. The experiment was laid out in factorial Randomized Complete Block Design consisting of 10 treatments (nitrogen 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha–1 alone and in combinations of 2 kg of the nitrogen fixing biofertilizer) arranged in 5 × 2 complete factorial with 3 replications. Application of nitrogen along with the biofertilizer significantly increased morphological, yield and quality characters as compared to application of nitrogen without biofertilizer. The maximum stem height, stem diameter, highest curd height, curd diameter, fresh curd weight and curd yield were recorded at 120 kg nitrogen and 2 kg biofertilizer ha–1. Cauliflower curd yield obtained at 120 kg nitrogen ha–1 did not significantly differ with the curd yield recorded at 60 kg nitrogen and 2 kg biofertilizer ha–1. The earliest days to curd initiation and maturity were recorded at 30 kg nitrogen and 2 kg biofertilizer ha–1. The highest vitamin C content of curds and the most attractive curd color were recorded at 60 kg nitrogen and 2 kg biofertilizer ha–1, while the appearance and over all acceptability were recorded at 120 kg nitrogen and 2 kg biofertilizer ha–1. The finding demonstrated a saving of 60 kg nitrogen ha–1 without significantly affecting yield. Abstract Objective was to determine the effects of supplementing corn-soybean meal-based diets with a multi-enzyme on growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients in growing pigs. A total of 276 pigs (BW = 33.99 ± 4.3 kg) were housed by sex in 45 pens of 6 or 7 pigs and fed 5 diets (9 pens/diet) in a randomized complete block design. Diets were positive control (PC); and negative control 1 (NC1) or negative control 2 (NC2) without or with multi-enzyme. The multi-enzyme used supplied at least 1,250, 860, 4,600, and 1,000 units of xylanase, β-glucanase, arabinofuranosidase and phytase per kilogram of diet, respectively. The PC was adequate in all nutrients according to NRC (2012) recommendations and had greater digestible P content than NC1 diet or NC2 diet by 0.134 percentage points. The NC1 diet had lower NE and digestible AA content than PC diet by 3%. The NC2 diet had lower NE and digestible AA content than PC diet by 5%. The diets were fed in 4 phases based on BW; Phase 1: 34–50 kg, Phase 2: 50–75 kg, Phase 3: 75–100 kg, and Phase 4: 100–120 kg. Nutrient digestibility was determined at the end of Phase 1. Overall (34–120 kg BW), pigs fed the PC and NC1 diets did not differ in ADG and ADFI. Pigs fed NC2 diet had lower (PPPP > 0.10). Supplemental multi-enzyme increased (P = 0.047) the ATTD of GE for NC2 diet. In conclusion, the NE and digestible AA and P can be lowered by ≤ 5% in multi-enzyme-supplemented diets without effects on growth performance pigs.

The coloured cotton crop is the best agroecological alternatives for farmers in semi-arid of Northeasthern region. Cultivation of BRS Verde cotton has been a success on productivity in this region. The practice of monoculture in cotton crop has caused loss of soil quality over the years. The organisms present in the soil are sensitive to changes of land use and management. They are excellent environmental bio indicators, representing important tool to evaluate impacts on ecosystems. In this context, the aim of this research was to evaluate the abundance and diversity of edaphic macrofauna under different management systems in the cotton crop. The design was a randomized complete block design with four replicates with five treatments in 5 collection seasons. The plots consisted of 8 lines spaced 1.0 x 0.30 m for all crops. Three PROVID traps were distributed to capture soil organisms, totally 12 samples/treatments. We identified taxonomic groups, density of organisms, ecological indexes of diversity and wealth of groups. In view of the results, we concluded that the cotton + maize consortium favoured increase of individual’s abundance and richness of faunistic groups. This cotton + maize consortium showed to be a promising alternative for better management and sustainability of the system. We also showed that soil macrofauna is a good indicator of soil quality in different cotton growing systems.

ABSTRACT: Due to the scarcity of information related to the effect of fertilizers on production and quality of vegetable seeds, mainly on species which present an increase in the cycle, like cauliflower, more studies are necessary about the influence of nutrients rates which provide high production of high-quality seeds. This research aimed to evaluate the influence of rates of phosphorus (P) on the production and quality of cauliflower seeds. Five rates of phosphorus were studied (0, 300, 600, 900 and 1200kg ha-1 of P2O5), in a randomized complete block design, with four replications. Production and quality (weight of a thousand seeds, germination test, first count of germination test and emergence in substrate) of the seeds and soil chemical characteristics were evaluated. The higher the rate of phosphorus, the higher P content in the soil and values of sum of bases, cation exchange capacity and saturation of bases were observed at the end of the cycle. Seed quality was not affected by P fertilization, with the exception of the weight of a thousand seeds which was adjusted to a linear model. For seed production quadratic effect was obtained. The highest weight of seeds per plant was estimated for the rate of 862kg ha-1 of P2O5.

ABSTRACT Information on the recovering of areas of gravel extraction of the Caatinga biome are scarce. Thus, the objective of this work was to assess the soil fauna as bioindicator of soil quality, evaluating areas with addition of topsoil (WAT) and control areas (CWT) without the addition of topsoil used for forest plantations, which were implemented for recovering gravel extraction areas. A native forest of the Caatinga biome (NFC) was taken as a reference. Ten traps with three replicates were installed in each area, which were evaluated in a randomized block design in split-plot arrangement at the end of the rainy season of different years, 0, 1, 3 and 6 years after the experiment implementation. A total of 45,740 specimens were captured. These specimens were from 36 taxonomic groups. The Acari, Diptera, Entomobryomorpha, Formicidae, Poduromorpha and Symphypleona were the predominant groups in all areas (WAT, CWT and NFC). Nine groups (25% of the total) had restricted occurrence. The fauna richness and diversity were higher in the NFC, followed by the WAT and CWT. The uniformity and total abundance of the soil fauna community showed no defined patterns. The abundance of most groups was inhibited in the treatments evaluated, compared with NFC, however, this adverse effect was more significant in CWT compared with WAT. The CWT and WAT had high similarity and both had very low similarity with NFC. The ecological complexity of soil fauna community was higher in NFC. The soil fauna was efficient as a bioindicator of soil quality, which was higher in WAT, compared with CWT.

Soil liming is a common practice in agriculture. It aims to reduce soil acidity and to supply calcium and magnesium. Lime, however, is not easily soluble in the soil, and its reaction products are often concentrated in the application zone, which is mainly the topsoil layer. In order to increase the concentration of nutrients in deeper layers, agricultural gypsum—a byproduct of phosphoric acid production process, rich in calcium and sulfur—is used. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical attributes of the oxysoil and the corn´s yield to the application of gypsum associated with potassium (K) rates. The study was developed in Uberaba city, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The factorial scheme was used 5x5, with five rates of K (0, 100, 180, 240, 360 kg ha-1 K2O) and five gypsum rates (0, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 kg ha-1) in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The soil chemical attributes were evaluated at 0.0-0.20 m and 0.20-0.40 m depth and the biometric and productive attributes of corn. The application of gypsum resulted in the increase of calcium (Ca) and sulfur (S) contents in all depths; reduced the levels of pH, manganese, potential acidity (H + Al) in the 0.0-0.20 m depth, and increase the levels of base of saturation and sum of bases on the 0.20-0.40 m depth. Corn yield and biometric attributes no were influenced by the factors evaluated.
