Small Burnet Response to Spring and Fall Postemergence Herbicide Applications

Small burnet is a hardy, relatively long-lived evergreen forb with the potential to improve grazing lands, particularly to extend grazing into late fall and winter. Small burnet was evaluated for tolerance to spring and fall POST applications of aminopyralid, bromoxynil, clethodim, clopyralid, dicamba, dimethenamid-P, imazamox, metribuzin, pendimethalin, quinclorac, and 2,4-DB. Injury, seed yield, seed viability, and dry matter yield (DMY) were measured in the spring following application. Injury was observed in response to all spring and fall herbicide applications. Injury from aminopyralid was the highest for both spring and fall applications at 24 and 79%, respectively. Fall application of imazamox and dicamba resulted in 57 and 31% injury, respectively. Spring-applied aminopyralid and 2,4-DB both reduced DMY by 16%, whereas fall applications of imazamox, dicamba, and aminopyralid reduced DMY by 36, 12, and 67%, respectively. Fall applications of imazamox and aminopyralid reduced seed yield by 33 and 65%, respectively. Fall-applied aminopyralid reduced seed germination by 43%. None of the spring-applied herbicides affected seed yield or seed germination. Small burnet is severely injured by aminopyralid and to a lesser degree by imazamox and dicamba. Bromoxynil, clethodim, clopyralid, dimethenamid-P, metribuzin, pendimethalin, and quinclorac did not affect small burnet DMY, seed yield, or germination the year after application.

Progenies from a five-genotype diallel cross in Russian wild ryegrass, Elymus junceus Fisch., were studied to assess the pattern of genetic control for F1 seed weight and a number of seedling and adult plant characters. Variation in F1 seed weight was largely determined by the maternal parent, but some control by the pollen parent was apparent. Of the seedling characters, days to emerge, rate of leaf appearance, rate of tiller appearance, and seedling dry matter yield, only days to emerge showed additive variance which is amenable to direct selection. The other three characters could be most easily exploited by a recurrent selection program. The adult plant characters, date of inflorescence appearance, P content of the forage, and organic matter digestibility indicated strong additive control which is amenable to direct selection. Dry matter yield and seed yield also showed strong additive control which was accompanied by specific combining ability and weak maternal effects suggesting good progress should be possible by direct selection methods but crossing the selections in a diallel fashion prior to formation of synthetics might be desirable. The seedling characters, rate of leaf and tiller appearance and seedling dry matter yield were interrelated and associated with adult plant yield, thus offering the possibility of screening seedlings for these characters in a recurrent selection program for improved forage or seed yield.

Selection for fast and slow germination in Altai wild ryegrass (Elymus angustus Trin.) through three cycles of selection resulted in significant differences in the speed of germination index between the two populations. The fast germinating population established significantly better in a field test than the slow germinating population. Significant differences, although not large, were also found between the populations for spring vigor, seed yield and dry matter yield. However, observations from a greenhouse test indicate that these differences were attributable to differences in stand establishment in the field test rather than directly attributable to selection for speed of germination. It is suggested that selection for fast germination would be useful in breeding better establishing strains of Altai wild ryegrass. This would have little effect on either spring vigor or yield of seed and forage.

The experiment was conducted in three locations Jari, Chefa and Sirinka of Eastern Amhara to select the best performing varieties, in terms of biomass yield, chemical composition, haulm yield, seed yield and other agronomic characteristics of Glycine max (L.) Merrill grown under the rain- fed condition of lowland areas of Eastern Amhara in a randomized complete block design with tree replications. Twelve released soybean varieties were Afgat ,Belesa-95, Boshe , Cheri , Dhidhessa, Gishama , Gizo, Korme, Pawe-03, katta, Wegayen and Wollo were used as a treatments. The seeds were planted in 40 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants on a plot size of 3.2m*4m. Spacing between blocks and plots were 1 and 0.5m, respectively. The seed rate was 60 kg/ha and a fertilizer rate 100 kg/ha NPS was applied during seed planting. The combined analysis of variance over two years at location Jari for dry matter yield of varieties Afgat, Gizo, Pawe-03, Wogayen and Wollo were significantly higher as compared to other soybean varieties. The combined analysis across locations at Jari and Sirinka (2019-second year) showed that varieties Afgat, Gishama, Gizo, Pawe-03, Wogayen and Wollo had higher dry matter yield and varieties Gishama (3.97 t/ha), Gizo (3.60 t/ha), Pawe-03 (4.04 t/ha) and Wogayen (3.36 t/ha) had higher haulm yield as compared with other varieties. The combined analysis across locations at Jari and Sirinka (2019) showed that varieties Pawe-03(2951 kg/ha), Gizo (2862 kg/ha), Afgat (2859 kg/ha), Gishama (2654 kg/ha),Wollo (2461 kg/ha) and Wogayen (2404 kg/ha) had higher seed yield as compared with other varieties. The variety Wollo gave higher crud protein content in two locations (Jari and Sirinka) .Therefore, varieties Afgat, Pawe-03 and Wollo were recommends for the given areas of Jari , Chefa, Sirinka and could be produced in similar environments for the best of produced optimal amount of dry matter, haulm and seed yield and good protein supplement for production of ruminants.Thus, further researches will be needed to investigate on the utilization of livestock.

A field experiment was conducted at Dr.P.D.K.V., Akola (M.S.) during 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. The experiment comprised of nine treatments involving 2.5 and 5t FYM ha-1, 1 and 2t sheep manure ha-1, 2 and 4t vermicompost ha-1, 25:50 and 12.5: 25 kg ha-1 NP through inorganic and control. Among different treatments, the application of 4t vermicompost ha-1 resulted in significantly increased pod yield (26.19 q ha-1), seed yield (17.62 q ha-1) and dry matter yield (46.68 q ha-1) as well as quality such as L-Dopa (3.63%), protein (26.79%) and test weight (111.69 g) of kawachbeej over control and superior over rest of treatments. The highest seed yield 184.04% and L-DOPA content 101.96% was observed with 4t vermicompost ha-1 over control. The similar trend of results was noticed in uptake of macro (N, P, K ,S) and micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu) of kawachbeej and it was at par with treatment 5t FYM ha-1 and 25:50 kg ha-1 NP through inorganic, respectively.

James and Arthur are the first two cultivars of Dahurian wild ryegrass registered for sale in Canada. The main attributes of James and Arthur are excellent establishment vigor, high establishment-year dry matter yield and high seed yield in subsequent years. Organic matter digestibility of both cultivars is similar to that of other wild ryegrass species but the crude protein content of first-harvest forage declines more rapidly than for Altai wild ryegrass. Stands persist two to three years in southwestern Saskatchewan. This short-lived perennial with high seedling vigor is well adapted for seeding in mixtures with long-lived, low seedling vigor grass species for improving the early productivity of pastures.Key words: Elymus dahuricus, cultivar description, dry matter yield, seed yield, forage quality, seedling vigor

Feed supply in terms of quality and quantity plays an important role in livestock production and productivity. Here we report on varietal differences in yield and nutritional quality among 9 alfalfa accessions over 7 harvests following planting in Ethiopia. Experimental design was a randomized complete block with 3 replications at Chano Mille, Southern Ethiopia on a sandy loam soil where mean annual rainfall is 544 mm. Days to harvesting, plant height, dry matter yield, seed yield and the concentrations of the nutritional quality parameters crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose plus in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and relative feed value (RFV) were assessed to rank the accessions. There were significant (P<0.001) differences between accessions and harvests in plant height, dry matter yield and seed yield. Accession ILRI_7323A performed best in all agro-morphological aspects. All accessions, except 1, produced forage with CP in excess of 30% and IVDMD greater than 80% with RFV greater than 150 at 50% flowering, indicating the high quality of forage produced. Further studies to assess the longevity of stands of the various accessions seem warranted along with studies in higher rainfall environments or under irrigation.

Three experiments were conducted at Tamworth, New South Wales, in 1990-92 to assess the effects of a range of broadleaf and grass herbicides, 6 rates of glyphosate and paraquat + diquat, and 4 rates of 2,4-D amine and diuron on the phytotoxicity, dry matter yield, inflorescence number, and seed yield of established Danthonia (wallaby grass) plants. Phytotoxicity was scored visually on a 0-5 scale (0, no phytotoxicity; 5, 100%). Danthonia dry matter yields were not affected (P<0.05) by any herbicide tested, except glyphosate applied at 2360 g a.i./ha. Phytotoxicity was highest for the glyphosate treatment (1440 g a.i./ha) in that study. All rates of glyphosate, and paraquat + diquat rates >250 + 150 g a.i./ha reduced (P<0.05) inflorescence number compared with the unsprayed control. Paraquat + diquat had no significant effect on seed yield, but glyphosate rates >360 g a.i./ha reduced (P<0.05) seed yield compared with the control. In 1992, no damage was observed on 2,4-D amine treatments and phytotoxicity scores were low (<2) for all diuron treatments. Danthonia inflorescence numbers and seed yields were higher (P<0.05) on plots mown in early spring than on unmown treatments. The lack of effect of herbicides such as diclofopmethyl, simazine, fenoxaprop-ethyl, and diuron on Danthonia dry matter yield, and the low phytotoxicity, indicated that a range of chemicals may be used on established Danthonia swards to control perennial and annual grass weeds. Seed yield was more affected than dry matter yield by herbicide, and paraquat + diquat should be used in preference to glyphosate on seed crops.

Vegetative and seed yield in Cajanus cajan accession UQ1 were investigated over nine sowing densities ranging from 6727 to 215,278 plants per hectare. Dry matter yield per plant declined asymptotically with increasing density, while the yield per hectare v. density relationship was described by a parabolic curve. The highest yield per hectare (22,950 kg) was produced at the 0.305 by 0.305 m spacing (107,639 plants ha-1). Maximum seed yield (2774 kg ha-1) was attained at a relatively low density at a spacing 0.914 by 0.610 m (17,940 plants ha-1). At higher densities, increased stand mortality and reduced numbers of pods per plant resulted in severe yield reductions. Reduced pod number per plant was related to significant reductions in the number of pod-producing branches and the inflorescence-bearing stem length, with little change in seed size or seeds per pod.
