INTRODUCTION. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder which affects thousands of people worldwide at increasingly early age. It is known as a chronic noncommunicable disease (NCD), of slow, severe and progressive evolution, requiring intensive treatment and appropriate supervision. It shows high prevalence among young people. Causes of diabetes mellitus are commonly associated to inadequate food consumption and sedentary lifestyle, genetic predisposition and cellular alterations.OBJECTIVE: the study aimed at developing the knowledge of how this disease originates in the cells by means of ludic classroom activities designed for High School students.MATERIAL AND METHODS: a questionnaire was initially applied to verify the students’ previous knowledge of the disease. Terminology associated to cells and diabetes was selected and used in a teaching approach which was simploe and adequate to the students’ level of understanding. Didactic sequences included models made with EVA (ethylene vynil acetate) to simulate enterocytes and the beta cells of the pancreas, presentation of an anatomic doll to promote understanding of the digestion process and absorption of nutrients, participatory theater using a giant cell to simulate insulin-regulated mechanisms, a myth and fact game, and a kitchen set. The class ended with a second questionnaire to evaluate student satisfaction toward the methodology.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: the use of a ludic pedagogical approach to demonstrate the cell origin of the disease motivated student voluntary participation, and provided perception of their lack of information on the biology of diabetes mellitus. Data show that the ludic pedagogical approach facilitated understanding of certain topics in Biology and the disease itself.

Indonesia on the fifth ranks in the world considering of accident number, after China, India, Afghanistan, and Nigeria, where East Java is the province that has the highest accident in Indonesia. The city of Surabaya as the Capital of East Java Province automatically became the centre of government activities, giving rise to transportation activities that indirectly had an impact on accidents. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research to obtain the accident rate and the location of black site in the city of Surabaya. In addition, considering that productive age including junior high school (SMP) is the highest contributor on the accidents, the level of understanding of junior high school students on traffic regulations needs to be analysed. From the data obtained at IRSMS, it can be seen that five roads in Surabaya were the highest contributors to accidents in Surabaya, namely Mastrip, Diponegoro, A. Yani, Kenjeran, and Ir. Soekarno, where the five roads are inter-city connecting roads that blend with the road in the city. In addition, from the interview data, there was a relationship between awareness of traffic behaviour and willingness to protect themselves.

Abstract The rapid progress of the times requires an educational approach to be innovative and adaptive to changes in technology and information. Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) is a system that incorporates technology in education. This method facilitates learning to be interesting, effective, and easily accessible to everyone. This survey research was an initial step in developing Augmented Reality based Modules for high school students on global warming. The importance of this research is that educational media using Augmented Reality is relatively new in the field of educational media. Analysis of learning problems and analysis of students are the two indicators used in the analysis of this need. Based on this research survey, it was found that augmented reality based educational media is viewed as important and necessary as learning materials in schools especially for students of high ability. The next phase is the development of MAR-based learning media that meets these requirements.

School children in general and high school students, in particular more often than not lose interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. Underrepresented and female students are even more discouraged by STEM courses. Our investigation and interviews with high school teachers cite that the main reason for such disinterest is the disconnect between school and reality. Students cannot relate the abstract concepts they learn in physics, biology, chemistry, or math to their surroundings. This paper discusses a new capstone project-based approach that closes this gap. This work is an outcome of an NSF funded project called CAPSULE (Capstone Unique Learning Experience). We use the top-down pedagogical approach instead of the traditional bottom-up approach. The top-down approach relates the abstract concepts to exciting open-ended capstone projects where students are engaged in designing solutions, like products to solve open-ended problems. This top-down approach is modeled after the college-level capstone design courses. The paper presents the model, its details, and implementation. It also presents the formative and summative evaluation of the model after deploying it in the Boston Public Schools, a system heavily populated by the targeted student groups.

Purpose Amid the worldwide lockdown and emergency transition to online classes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper aims to examine high school students’ satisfaction in this unique learning environment. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was first used to extract a set of important factors from a number of variables. A logistic regression was subsequently used to access student satisfaction levels during the COVID-19 lockdown. In addition, a small qualitative study was conducted to gain additional insight into student satisfaction ratings. Findings A study sample of 486 usable responses revealed that students were most satisfied with the responsiveness of teaching staff, which included the provision of assignments and feedback on performance. The study also revealed that students experienced a range of emotions; those who experienced positive emotions (joy, pride, hope) were more satisfied than those who experienced negative emotions (frustration, anxiety, boredom). Research limitations/implications Policymakers and educators in high schools could benefit from these findings when formulating policy recommendations to support the manning of operations during crisis situations and justify the introduction of future offerings of blended or online courses. Originality/value The study was conducted in a real and unprecedented crisis which created a unique environment to examine factors influencing Jamaican high school students’ satisfaction levels during the lockdown.
