Faculty at Minnesota State University, Mankato (USA) developed a family-focused baccalaureate curriculum to address gaps between evidence and practice with families that have been linked to undergraduate nursing education. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of new graduate nurses in providing family-focused nursing care in practice settings. A descriptive design focused on narrative data was used to identify the nurses’ perceived benefits and challenges of caring for families in their current nursing practice. Data were collected from three cohorts of new graduate nurses who were currently employed in health care settings ( N = 109) through a five-contact procedure and examined using a content analysis method. Nine perceived benefit categories, subcategories, and summary statements were identified. Seven challenge categories were identified. The early career graduate nurses’ ability to translate family-focused knowledge to their practice was a significant finding. The benefits and value of developing interactions with families were evident in a number of categories. Education and practice systems can implement educational innovations and partner to support new career graduates’ ability to offer skilled family nursing practice.

An increasing number of children attend schools with chronic illnesses/disorders that require managing and comprehensive healthcare from school nurses during the day. Collaboration between school nurses, the school-aged child with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or asthma, and their families is needed when coordinating/managing chronic health problems in the school setting. However, involving families in the assessment and care planning processes can be challenging. The aim of this study was to survey the illness beliefs of school nurses and their perceptions of their family nursing practice skills when offering healthcare services to children with ADHD or asthma in schools. A cross-sectional study was used for a sample of 82 school nurses. The manuscript was prepared following STROBE guidelines. Results indicated that the school nurses perceived themselves to be more confident and to have better knowledge and skill in family nursing practice when offering healthcare services to families of children with ADHD in comparison to asthma.

This study describes nurses’ perspectives about their experience of being involved in a 6-day educational intervention which focused on the development of competency in family nursing practice with a particular emphasis on family nursing conversations. The foundational knowledge of the educational intervention was based on the Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) and the Calgary Family Intervention Model (CFIM). A research design incorporating quantitative and qualitative measurement was used. Before and after the family nursing educational intervention, nurse participants ( n = 18) completed the Families’ Importance in Nursing Care–Nurses’ Attitudes (FINC-NA) instrument. The outcomes were analyzed using paired-samples t tests. FINC-NA scores increased by 6.94 points ( SD = 5.66, p < .001). To complement the quantitative findings, in-depth interviews were conducted with all of the participants. Participants reported increased awareness of the importance of families in nursing care. In addition to an increase in positive attitudes about families, participants perceived that their knowledge and skills regarding family nursing conversations were more comprehensive. A 6-day educational intervention with a focus on reflection appears useful in helping nurses to “think family” and encouraging perceptions of increased competence in family nursing conversations.

This study aimed to discuss the contribution of the social network methodological framework in nursing care delivered to women who breastfeed their children up to six months of age. This qualitative study aimed to elaborate the social network map of 20 women through tape-recorded interview. Social network analysis evidenced a "strong" bond between these women and members from their primary network, especially friends, neighbors, mothers or with the child's father, who were reported as the people most involved in the breastfeeding period. The contribution of this framework to nursing practice is discussed, especially in care and research processes. We believe that nurses' appropriation of this framework can be an important support for efficacious actions, as well as to favor a broader perspective on the social context people experience.
