The European Union structural funds financing is apportioned unevenly among the regions, including counties and cities. When allocating the received structural funds financing, the level of social and economic development of an area is not taken into account. Besides the problems of poor municipalities co–funding in the uptake of the European Union structural funds are not considered. The existing problems do not allow to the regions of Latvia to develop and to compete equally, all in all impeding development and growth of the country. According to the author’s opinion, in order to solve the social and economic problems Latvia makes inefficient use of the allocated European Union structural funds financing.

The paper is dedicated to the role and place of cross-border cooperation in supporting sustainable development of neighboring bordering territories of the Carpathian region and member-states of the European Union. The comparative analysis of the indicators showing social and economic development of the regions of neighboring states from the countries on both sides of the border has been conducted. The ethnic affinity is underlined as an important element of development of cross-border cooperation. The need is substantiated in activation of cross-border cooperation through boosting integration and convergence processes with aim to provide balanced development of bordering territories.

The article deals with the economic diplomacy of Central American states towards key extraregional partners, namely the USA, the EU and the PRC. The features of these relations and existing problems and challenges are revealed. Supranational funding such as that from the European Union has become a key ingredient of the economic development of many major cities. Set across comparatively short time frames, these schemes are constantly evaluated and realigned to reflect current priorities, becoming increasingly competitive as cities deploy every strategy available to mitigate the effects of urban austerity. In the United Kingdom, European Union funding is currently allocated through a multi-level structure involving the state, subregional structures and cities, all conforming to supranational (i.e. European Union) guidelines. Considering this, this paper explores the extent to which funds such as the European Regional Development Fund can be effectively drawn down to focus upon issues deemed to be locally important. The paper achieves this through a case study of policy making in Liverpool, United Kingdom which, having successfully used Objective One funding to support an economic recovery in the 1990–00s, is now fully engaged with European Regional Development Fund agendas. In doing so, the paper explores how successful European Regional Development Fund-funded schemes are developed, drawing out the experiences of key stakeholders working at each level of the funding process. This allows for a reflection on the effects of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union and, moreover, makes a series of policy recommendations as to how future funding strategies might be improved.

Clinical research evolved side-by-side with technology, leading to exponential data generation contributing to social and economic development. Nevertheless, data storage, integrity, and privacy concerns have emerged, raising trust issues regarding data sharing. This chapter will demonstrate how blockchain technology (BT) can address these problems and help optimizing processes, minimize costs, and monetize data. It will explain why these models are not fully explored and how cryptocurrencies are advantageous compared to traditional currency. Worldwide examples of companies developing network infrastructures that rely on private players will be provided, and European cases, where consortium models that count with different partners to build health blockchain infrastructures are being developed, will be discussed. Considering the business models to be addressed under the European Union (EU) jurisdiction, a hypothetical BT-based healthcare model with potential application in the EU scenario will also be highlighted.

China has achieved great results in economic growth. But the country has had to pay a high price for them. Slowing dynamics of the domestic market, growing gap in the social and economic development of regions, impoverishment of its rural population are a small number of existing problems caused by China’s attempts to catch up with the world leader - the USA.

The article analyzes the state of development of agrarian production in Ukraine. It is determined that the most difficult issues are the questions of adaptation of the domestic agricultural sector of the economy to the conditions and requirements of the European Union. The indexes, which characterize the development of the research potential of the industrial infrastructure of agrarian production, are analyzed. It is defined that in Ukraine the tendencies towards increasing the level of social and economic development of agrarian production continue to grow. However, they are growing not fast enough. They are also uneven in the type and component aspect. Such situation requires the implementation of a levelling regulatory effect.
