Aim. To determine the role of complications of caries of deciduous teeth in the structure of pathology of hard dental tissues. Methods. Conducted was a dental examination and treatment of 1016 children aged 1 to 9 years who were treated at the children’s dental clinic. Results. The overall prevalence of caries was 78.64%, the need for treatment was - 73.82%. Complications of dental caries were found in 60.83% of cases. 55.21% of children had temporary tooth pulpitis, 41.24% - had a diagnosis of «periodontitis». Premature removal of deciduous teeth was performed in 12.11% of cases. At an early age (1-3 years) 47.35% of the children were registered as having affected deciduous teeth, almost half of them had teeth with complicated dental caries (20.0%). In children of preschool age (4-6 years) the prevalence of caries disease was 92.17%, and complications of caries were diagnosed in 78.80% of cases. In the group of primary school children (7-9 years) the proportion of children with affected temporary teeth was 98.34%. 86.77% of children had deciduous teeth with complications of caries. Every child who comes to children’s dentist at an early age, already has an average of 2.33 affected teeth, in the preschool age - 4.8 teeth, in the primary school years - 5.02 affected deciduous teeth. In evaluating the intensity of dental caries it was established that each child had on average 1.96 teeth with uncomplicated caries and 2.08 teeth with caries complications. Treatment or retreatment was necessary in 70.69% of cases of affected teeth, of them uncomplicated caries accounted for 35.96%. Conclusion. Revealed was a high prevalence and need for treatment of complicated caries of deciduous teeth starting from an early age.

 Background & Objectives: Worldwide, 60 to 90% of school children have experienced dental caries with higher prevalence in Asian and Latin American countries and poor dental and oral health and untreated oral disease can have a significant impact on quality of life according to WHO report. The objectives of the study were to assess the prevalence of dental caries both in deciduous and permanent teeth and to compare total decayed, filled teeth surfaces among primary school children of Kathmandu from both government and private schools and to find the percentage of first permanent molars affected with dental caries.Materials & Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among two Government and two Private Primary School Children in Kathmandu district. Total sample were 468 children. Required permission were obtained from concerned authorities. WHO accepted indices for assessing caries designed by Henry T Klein, Carrole E Palmer and Knutson J.W was used. SPSS 20 version software was used for data analysis. Results: Among 468 primary school children examined, 224 were from Government and 244 were from Private school. The prevalence of dental caries was 62 % and more deciduous teeth were decayed. The decayed, filled teeth surfaces in Private and Government school was statistically significant (p=0.000) but gender wise prevalence was statistically insignificant (p=0.303). Among 1st Permanent Molars teeth examined 85% were decayed.Conclusion: This pilot study shows prevalence of dental caries more in deciduous teeth. Among the permanent teeth affected, first permanent molars are in high number.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate an association between dental caries status and anthropometric measures in primary school children. Methods and Materials: An analytical cross-sectional study (n = 376) was conducted among primary school children (age range = 6–9 years) registered in private schools. Non-clinical data was gathered from parents of participating children through a self-administered structured questionnaire as well as from the children through an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Clinical data included the examination of dental caries using dmft/DMFT index and anthropometric measures including calculated z-scores of height-for-age (HAZ), weight-for-age (WAZ), BMI-for-age (BAZ), and physical examination. Inferential statistics included Kruskal Wallis and linear regression for univariate and multivariate analysis respectively. Results: The proportion of dental caries in primary and secondary dentition was 67.6% and 8.2% respectively. A significant association was observed between dental caries status and HAZ, WAZ, and BAZ (p < 0.001). An inverse relation was found between low, medium, and high dental caries categories and anthropometric measures. Conclusions: In the primary dentition, dental caries were significantly and inversely related to weight-for-age, height-for-age, and BMI-for-age. Hence, it can be concluded that among the low-income population dental caries is associated with lower anthropometric outcomes in children and therefore caries management should be considered an approach impacting overall health and quality of life.

Psychosocial factors influence family care and can jeopardize child development. This study aimed to analyze the association between maternal common mental disorders and incidence of early dental caries in preschool-age children living in areas covered by the Family Health Strategy in Salvador, Bahia State, Brazil, in a cohort design. A total of 472 children were examined and their mothers were interviewed from 2007 to 2008. Incidence of at least one tooth with caries was 21.19%, while 7.84% of the children showed high risk of caries. The results after adjusting for the child's age and maternal schooling showed that maternal common mental disorders were associated with high caries risk in deciduous teeth (adjusted RR = 2.41, 95%CI: 1.05-5.56, among children with 6 or fewer home appliances in the household; adjusted RR = 3.44, 95%CI: 1.06-11.17, among those that brushed twice or less per day). Maternal mental problems were associated with the development of caries in preschoolers.

Tooth decay can be caused by bacteria that live in the mouth. These bacteria feed on food leftovers in the teeth and produce acid. This acid destroys the enamel layer, dentine layer, and pulp. The purpose of this study is to analyze the risk factors of dental caries in primary school children. The subjects of this study were 77 students of SD Sendangmulyo 1 Semarang. We used questionnaires, diagnoses, and interviews for data collection. For data analysis, we used descriptive analysis method. The results showed that the most common dental caries risk factor in primary school children was sugar consumption. Up to 72% of children agreed to bring packed meal, 90.7% were used to have a breakfast, 80% used to clean their mouth every day, 70.7% clean their mouth after meals, 64% brush their teeth after eating candy, and 89.3 % brush their teeth before going to bed. There is a relationship between oral hygiene and dietary behavior and dental caries status of primary school children. In conclusion, there is a relationship between oral hygiene and dietary behavior and dental caries status of primary school children.

Aim. To study the prevalence and structure of deformity of the foot in primary school children (pupils of the 1st- 4th grades). Materials and methods. The study involved 277 children aged 7-10 years. The main method of investigation used was computed plantography by means of electronic baropodometer PadProfessional. Results. Deformity of the foot was detected in 58% of children 65.3% of boys and 52.3% of girls (p 0.05). The following pathology was revealed: platypodia, increase in the load on the calcaneal part of the foot and malposition of the foot. The most common pathology was platypodia diagnosed in 28.2% of children. Conclusions. High prevalence of foot deformities requires their early diagnosis and correction as well as improvement of parents knowledge regarding this problem.

Background. Children in low-income developing countries are likely to suffer from undergrowth. Dental caries is another common problem in these countries.Aim. To examine the association between untreated dental caries in primary and permanent teeth with age-adjusted height and weight among 6–12-year-old children in Bangladesh.Design. Social, behavioural, and clinical data were collected from 1699 children in nine different randomly selected primary schools in socially deprived areas of Bangladesh. The associations of age-adjusted weight and height and being underweight with dental caries were examined adjusting for sex, area of residence, socioeconomic position, skipping meals, tooth cleaning, and doctor visits.Results. 26% of the children were underweight and 55% had untreated dental caries. Children with at least one decayed tooth were significantly underweight with odds ratios 1.6 (95% CI 1.1, 2.3) and 1.5 (95% CI 1.1, 2.0) for 6–8-years and 9–12-year-old children, respectively, in the adjusted model. The number of decayed teeth was inversely and significantly associated with the standardized age-adjusted weight.Conclusions. The findings highlight the association between untreated dental caries and being underweight in primary school children in socially deprived areas in low-income developing countries and emphasize the need to integrate oral and general health policies with social policies.

Background.Soil-transmitted helminthic infection is a common public health challenge of primary school children in resource challenged and developing countries. Our aim was to determine the prevalence and pattern of soil-transmitted helminthic infection among primary school children in a rural community in Imo State, Nigeria.Method.The study involved a cross-sectional survey of 284 primary school children in a rural community.Results.The overall prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthic infection (STHI) was 30.3%. Of all STHIs, hookworm was the commonest geohelminth observed, 81 (94.2%). The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthic infection was more in males, 58 (38.4%), than in females, 28 (21.1%). This difference was statistically significant (P=0.001).Conclusion.The high prevalence rate of soil-transmitted helminthic infection amongst the study population is worrisome. There is need for organized and routine deworming among school children in the community.
