Abstract: This paper aims to verifying the constitutive elements of the soundscape of Charles Kiefer’s short story “O poncho”. The presence of music, winds, natural and unnatural sounds align to the state of affairs and form the essence in which the narrative is developed. In this tale, the soundscape plays a decisive role in the development of the plot, since it influences the actions of the main character. Considering the different possibilities of analysis that the literary text allows, we intend to highlight the soundscape as an element of the narrative through the presence of the sounds in the selected work, and consequently to demonstrate the way they are relevant in the construction of the plot. Keywords: soundscape; state of affairs; narrative.

The modern history of Ukraine shows that the nation seeks to advance on the European path and meet the level of civilization development of the West. In this state of affairs, one can not ignore the rights of citizens, which are a state-building principle for European communities, namely, the primordial rights and freedoms of its citizens. The European face of Ukraine is formed from many components, including the importance of religious relations in the state, within which the freedom of citizens in general is determined. In 2015, Pope Francis recalled that religious freedom is "a fundamental right that forms the way by which we interact socially and personally with people who are around us, whose religious views may differ from ours."

The present work approaches the way Odete Semedo, in her literary text and specifically in the short story Naquela Noite, uses strategies which can be considered as a possible symbolization of “sites of memory”. Such strategies reinforce resistance mechanisms and indicate ways of survival to go through difficult periods in the troubled space of Guinea-Bissau.  The discussion that is now underway intends to endorse part of the thought of Amílcar Cabral, the most expressive revolutionary leader on the Guinean ground, in which the greater meaning of his people’s struggle for independence is clarified. Cabral’s lucid perception seems to be the same that can be seen in the work carried out by Semedo when he enacts, in his literary project, possibilities for the Guinean people to assume, even with great difficulties, the direction of their destiny. The strategies assumed by the writer configure a literary project of a politicized nature. This work, fueled by these reflections, can verticalize the discussion by focusing on the symbolization of “sites of memory” in Semedo’s text, emphasizing, in the enunciation of it, its performativity as a beacon of resistance and an input for survival to overcome the harshness of current times of Guinea-Bissau. In Naquela Noite, Semedo’s dexterity is proven by her skill of handling the concomitance of divergent times and spaces, as well as the remains of traditions threatened with extinction due to the acceleration of history. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the use of a linguistic form (lexical reduplication) can communicate affective contents. Lexical reduplication, understood as the intentional repetition of a word, is defined as a pattern XX used to convey, on the one hand, a content which differs from the “basic” meaning of X by involving, for instance, intensification, narrowing, or expansion, and, on the other hand, an affective content that results from the evaluation of the state of affairs at hand. To test reduplication as well as the derivation of affective contents linked to its use, I have relied on a recognition task: after hearing a short story, participants were asked if the items presented on the screen occurred in the story or not. The results obtained suggest that the formal pattern of reduplication plays the role of a trigger.

The aims of this article are: (a) a “close reading” of Etienne Leroux’s short story “Die man van Nizjni-Nowgorod" and (b) testing Hennie Aucamp's statement that this story can serve as an “introduction” to Leroux, In doing the first the author of the article confirms the second. The story deals with the contrast between reality and illusion, truth and falsehood, the mask and the “true self”. In various ways the main character tries to transform and transcend an ugly and unacceptable reality. However, he himself and his strategies are periodically being exposed. The fact that it is not always possible for the reader as well as for the narrator to know whether Johnny really believes his own “salesman’s talk” contributes to the complexity and fascination of the discourse. In the way in which the actantial matrix is handled, the use of the (literary) reference and the passive role played by the main character the later Leroux is clearly discernible.

Islamic moderation is the Islamic balance which includes all aspects of Islam, whether in the way of thinking and practical application. This word has another meaning, which are the best, ideal, proportion and moderation. But the emergence of Islamic movements such as Salafism, Muslim Brotherhood, or jama’ah Tabligh and Da'wah, which have acknowledged its centrality, has alienated Islam from its true moderation. Novel Yauman Ma Kuntu Islamiyyan by the Egyptian writer Ahmed Abu Khalil is a story about the main character, the generation who grew up in the environment of the Muslim Brotherhood and was influenced by the concept of these movements while searching for the true way of Islamic life. This study aims to understanding the concept of Islamic moderation of a main character by knowing the concept of Islamic moderation presented by the writer in this novel. JOYCE’S FINNEGANS WAKE AND MCCARTHY’S REMAINDER: CODING AND LANGUAGE STRATIFICATION The purpose of this paper is to consider the terms “code” and “language stratification” by analysing James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake and Tom McCarthy’s Remainder. A code is considered to be a transition from mimesis to meaning. The starting point of the analysis is the genre of Finnegans Wake and Remainder, and the state of fictional characters in these literary works. The paper argues that the fictional characters have a “rhetorically encrypted identity”, and furthermore considers methods with which this identity develops, and their consequences. The paper also shows how the technique of bricolage is used in Finnegans Wake and Remainder, and explains the connection between bricolage and encryption. The last part of the analyses explains the way in which Joyce’s and McCarthy’s texts use their literary language to self-reflect about the code the texts are written in. The code thus stays within the area of mimesis (and does not proceed to the area of meaning). This text also proposes the idea of a literary text as performative, which consequently changes the ontology of fictional characters in their respective literary works.

Comparative study is the way to make comparison of two (possibly more) things. In  literature,  there  are  some  aspects  that  could be  compared  such  as  the  literary work  itself. This  study discusses about  two  literary works  from different  culture and different author. The first one is novel which title Surat Kecil Untuk Tuhan by Agnes  Devauner  and  the  second  is  short  story  from  Eric-Emmanuel  Schmitt which  title Oscar and  the Lady  in Pink. The purpose of  this study  is  to compare about the intrinsic elements of both literary works and to compare about the main character  there.  The method which  is  used  to  this  study  is  qualitative  research because  of  the  data  collected  by  the  word  or  sentence  but  not  the  number. Qualitative  data  deals  with  descriptions  which  could  be  observed  and  not measured.  The  results  of  this  study  showed  to  the  reader  about  the  intrinsic elements  of  both  different  literary works  and  also  the  comparison  between  the main characters of each literary work. Hopefully this study will give the beneficial to the reader in terms of comparative study.

Few political areas in North America offer so much in the way of interest and instruction to the student of the geographical distribution of bumblebees as the Province of Alberta in western Canada. This is due not only to the fact that extremes in elevation between certain portions of Alberta bring together species of pronounced northern and southern tendencies, a condition duplicated in many parts of western North America, but likewise to the fact that Alberta is a meeting ground of species with decided eastern and western affinities. A somewhat similar state of affairs, though less marked, occurs in the Dakotas as attested by a study of approximately 900 specimens of bumblebees from South Dakota submitted to me for determination by Professor H. C. Severin and recorded by him in the “Sixteenth Annual Report of the State Entomologist of South Dakota,” 1925, pp. 17-20.
