The primary aim around developing and optimizing an electronic health record is to improve patient care and population health. The objective of this study is to design and evaluate an action research approach for the optimization of the design of a summary page artefact within an electronic health record for newborn healthcare. An action research approach was chosen for its participatory democratic process for developing practical knowledge and solutions. Collaborative workshops lead by an independent graphic facilitator with a ‘bottom up’ approach, involving self-selected motivated members from multidisciplinary healthcare teams, were designed and conducted. To evaluate this approach, insights were drawn from behavioural and design science paradigms to demonstrate that knowledge and understanding of the design problem and its solution were acquired in building the optimized summary page artefact. Information system development for healthcare requires consideration not just of what we do but how and why we do things. Our analysis demonstrates that action design research represents an agile and lean approach for successful optimization and implementation of information system development in healthcare.

One of the courses in D IV Informatics Engineering Department is Industrial Practices Work. This course is held to equip students of praxis in the world of software development. Unfortunately, so far the mechanism for implementing Industrial Practices Work is still in the conventional form. One of them is, for example, a student registers with the administration department of a study program, then requests a letter to be made to several software houses. In fact, sometimes the drafting of the request can be repeated in each group. This kind of process is very ineffective and slows down the performance of study programs. Therefore, through this research an information system was developed that could help to facilitate the implementation of Industrial Practices Work. The system development methodology used in this study is the waterfall method.

University of Christian Indonesian Paulus (UKI Paulus) had started the college quality assurance system by setting the standard, policy and quality of documents. However, it is not supported yet by the information system, which make the process of standard socialization, policy and quality document were not effective and causes limited access to anyone who need the information. Moreover, during the implementation of monitoring and evaluation (monev), quality audits is also inefficient and become a barrier for the implementation of the quality assurance system. Therefore, the information system based on data Internal Academic Quality Audit (Audit MutuAkademik Internal/AMAI) was developed using Unified Modeling Language as part of information and communication technology. The assessment of AMAI of UKI Paulus was carried out by the auditors to every departments by seeing the audited form then count the score of each rubric in order to obtain the standard value and perspective. The system of AMAI provides the report of academic quality assessment from each department to the related leader of the implementation unit. The presence of this system had helped the implementation of quality assurance system for university in order to improve the quality of their institution. The development of information system based on data, AMAI, uses the five stages paradigm of the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC): (1) identification of system requirements; (2) analysis and modeling system; (3) making the system; (4) system assessment and improvement; (5) implementation.

Improving access to water (and sanitation) services in Kenya (estimated at 59 and 32%, respectively), is one of the country's commitments. However, although efforts to address the situation through a rigorous water sector reform have shown some improvements, challenges still persist. One key challenge is inadequate capacity of sector institutions to deliver on their mandates. In particular, high Non-Revenue Water (NRW) levels (averaging 45%) negatively affect financial viability of water utilities. Key stakeholders are currently collaborating to improve NRW levels. Through capacity development support, underlying issues have been addressed and service delivery improved. The case of Nakuru Water, Sewerage and Sanitation Company (NAWASSCO), where local and international partners are implementing an innovative NRW model has resulted in commendable gains, is described. The NRW pilot adopted an action research approach to implement the International Water Association methodology of reducing NRW to the local situation through a pilot (NAKA). Emerging best practices will be up-scaled to other areas within and beyond Nakuru. Geographic information system (GIS) and management information system (MIS) tools were developed to facilitate decision-making. The pilot resulted in marked reduction in NRW levels and increased revenue. It demonstrates that capacity, when properly developed and locally owned, can result in commendable development gains.

Users have been described as necessary experts in information system developments. This research introduces a viewpoint that the users are the main actors in development projects and the other participants only give their experience for the use of the actual developers. In addition to the strong involvement of users, our research emphasises the special nature of the information system project with earlier-made specifications. This article suggests that in order to achieve a successful output, a reflective and flexible working process is needed. This suggestion is valid especially in a case that is out of the line of common approaches that are described in the literature. The research approach in this study was qualitative and the empirical material was gathered from a case study. The approach was subjective and it necessitated interpretation when analysing the results. The case included an information system development that was carried out to produce an inter-organisational information system to support certain functionality between organisations. Despite the output was an information system, we argue that the approach with active users is also applicable in the development of any other artefact.
