The dairy industry produces large amounts of whey as a by- product or co-product, which has led to considerable environmental problems due to its high organic matter content. Over the past decades, possibilities of more environmentally and economically efficient whey utilisation have been studied, primarily to convert unwanted end products into a valuable raw material. Sustainable whey management is mostly oriented to biotechnological and food applications for the development of value-added products such as whey powders, whey proteins, functional food and beverages, edible films and coatings, lactic acid and other biochemicals, bioplastic, biofuels and similar valuable bioproducts. This paper provides an overview of the sustainable utilization of whey and its constituents, considering new refining approaches and integrated processes to covert whey, or lactose and whey proteins to high value-added whey-based products.

During the past 30 years, many emerging economies, especially China, have strengthened their technological and innovative capabilities. Have these countries started to threaten the position of traditional technological leaders? This paper examines whether technological capabilities of an economy can be evaluated based on the goods each economy exports (EXPY). Detailed product classification of exports to the EU in the period between 1984 and 2009 form the underlying data. Further, other data and studies are used to assess the reliability of EXPY. Results show that many emerging economies have significantly increased their technological sophistication; among them exports of Mexico, the Philippines and Malaysia are technologically the most sophisticated. These economies have significant share of foreign value added embodied in exports, though. Therefore, EXPY based on gross exports is not a reliable indicator of technological capabilities of countries and this indicator needs to be combined with other data.

Buckwheat crop improvement by breeding has been taking place over the past 100 years or more. During this time there has been improvements in many desirable agronomic characteristics which has resulted in higher yields in many of the breeding programs. Phenotypic modifications, such as dwarf, semi-dwarf and branching have been reported. There has also been an effort to increase flower number as this has been shown in cross pollinating buckwheat, to increase yields. Flower cluster modifications and their effects on yield have also been studied. Increased reports on the discovery of buckwheat wild species have been reported from several programs with many interspecific crosses having taken place. Several of these crosses were performed with Fagopyrum esculentum in efforts to increase variability which can be used to increase yield potential as well as to obtain increased nutritional components.  More recent efforts have focused on the development of self-pollinating buckwheat, both from introgression of genes from Fagopyrum homotropicum as well as from mutations in cross pollinating buckwheat. The main problem has been in breeding depression which has occurred in many of the reported attempts. However, high yielding homomorphic, self-pollinating varieties have been developed and are now in commercial production. There is now emphasis being placed on many of the nutritional aspects of buckwheat flour as well as value added components. It is expected that this will increase over time.  Key words: Buckwheat breeding, homomorphic, autogamous buckwheat.

Research background: There is no doubt that innovation is an important source of a company´s competitiveness, but it is very difficult to measure the extent to which it contributes to the growth of competitiveness. Opponents of measuring innovation argue that measuring innovation is a measurement of the immeasurable. How to measure innovations and is it possible to measure innovations, is a question constantly posed by academics, managers, and economists all over the world. To find answer to these questions, this review article analyses scientific publications on innovation measurement published between 1968 and 2021. Purpose of the article: The main purpose of this article is to increase the understanding of the metrics landscape and to identify differences in the methods used in the past and present with emphasis on identification of statistical and econometric methods used to study innovation. Methods: To achieve the purpose of the article, literature review as a method of qualitative research was used. Data for literature review were gained from the Web of Science database. Findings & Value added: The analysis finds several metrics that can be used for evaluation of company´s innovation. The results can helps managers, academics, and economists to better understand the innovation measurement..

Research background: The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic strongly affected the development of the volume of trade on the OTC market. The volume was below its normal level due to the uncertainty and fear in the society. Purpose of the article: The objective of the paper was to explain the differences between the period before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and to determine the predictions of further development until the year 2025 Methods: Using the method of neural networks, the prediction of the closing exchange rate until 2025 was determined based on the data from the past years, according to which the RM index value will be higher in December this year, with a subsequent slight decrease and fluctuations. Findings & Value added: The results showed that the volume of trades was lower in the past compared to the period just before the pandemic, i.e. the year 2020, when the RM index was clearly highest. Investors should postpone investments until the value of the RM index is stable and trading on the OTC market is advantageous again. However, if they are willing to risk, investments can be made, although the return on investment will be unreasonably long.

The colors in art have always influenced the human consciousness through the power of the symbolism embedded in them from ancient times to the present. Some color values from the past are preserved for a long period of time, while others are transformed with a certain meaning in time, depending on various factors such as religion, cultural traditions, geographical location, etc. In modern times, the symbolic meaning of color is rethought with a new content, often uniting those laws that were once the basis of ancient knowledge.

Daryaganj Sunday Book Market, popularly known as Daryaganj Sunday Patri Kitab Bazaar, is a weekly informal market for used, rare, and pirated books that has been operating on the streets of Old Delhi for the past fifty years. In this essay, I focus on one of the circuits that has been flourishing in this market, that of pirated or ‘duplicate’ or D-books. In order to examine the forms in which piracy thrives in the present-day Patri Kitab Bazaar, and the reasons behind it, I compare two types of pirated books found here: a low-price self-help manual in Hindi and a ‘D’ copy of an English novel by popular Indian author Chetan Bhagat. As I examine the essential role that ‘randomness’ plays in the constitution of pirated texts, I suggest that there is organization to this apparent lack of pattern or unpredictability. Such permutation of order and chaos resonates with the location of the bazaar – a site that thrives on the serendipity of the streets.

The paper focuses on micro-regional structures in the Northern Bohemia, for which the tradition of industrial production is typical. In the case of the studied Děčín and Česká Lípa regions, in the past it was mainly a light processing industry. The micro-regions were defined on the basis of daily commuting data. Firm accounting data available in publicly available financial statements of companies were used to evaluate economic performance. From the relative indicators, value added labor productivity and the average monthly wage were used for the analysis. Surprisingly, an average high economic performance of the manufacturing industry was found in the monitored geographical structures. However, relatively low in the strongest industry, ie. in the automotive industry, which contributed most to the reindustrialisation of the Česká Lípa region. Ie. that foreign investment did not necessarily play a comprehensively positive role here. The typical textile industry in the Děčín region has practically completely disappeared and the whole region shows significant deindustrialisation tendencies.
