Successful aging is a prominent framework within gerontology, yet an understanding of how aging adults define “successful aging” is often missing in the social work discourse around what it means to age well. This cross-sectional, exploratory study used an online survey to explore community-dwelling adults’ (aged 55+; n=471) definition of successful aging, the underlying components across all definitions, and any differences in components based on whether or not the adults identified as aging successfully. Summative content analysis yielded five main themes and 13 sub-themes for those who identified as aging successfully and five main themes and 11-sub-themes for those who identified as not aging successfully with elements of health constituting the largest percentage of responses across both groups. Bivariate analyses found participants in the “not aging successfully” group mentioned elements of Being Healthy and Financial Security more than those in the aging successfully group, and elements of Sustain Participation, Curiosity, and Learning less than those in the “aging successfully” group. The findings illustrate the extent to which aging adults view successful aging as the presence of health and ability. Social workers should be mindful to the ways in which adults view successful aging and the elements they believe to contribute to successful aging in order to provide and tailor programs, services, and resources that are supportive of aging adults’ needs and wishes.

Abstract COVID-19 pandemic has caused a severely detrimental effect on the physical, psychological, and functional well-being of older adults by forcing them to limit their social activities. This study investigates the amount and intensity of daily physical activity (PA) in older adults, living under the social distancing guidelines during COVID-19 pandemic. In this cross-sectional study, 124 community-dwelling older adults (Age:60–96 years, mean:75±7.14) were recruited via word-of–mouth and key person approach between March 2021-August 2021. Participants completed an online survey on COVID-19 questionnaires and wore an ActiGraph GT9X accelerometer on their non-dominant wrist for consecutive 7 days in free-living conditions. Euclidean Norm Minus One cut-points were used to estimate the total time spent in sedentary behavior (SB), light PA (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Results showed that, 7% had COVID-positive, 55% perceived moderate severity of COVID in their area, 31% reported fear of COVID, and 14.5% were afraid of losing their life to COVID. On average, participants obtained 12.43±2.1 hours/day of SB, 3.47±1.05 hours/day of LPA and 42.71±29.71 minutes/day of MVPA. MVPA minutes/day was significantly higher (P = 0.006) in participants aged 60-85 years than those aged 85+ years (45.38 minutes/day vs 14.25 minutes/day). When age-adjusted data was compared to pre-COVID-19 studies, we found COVID-19 pandemic had negatively impacted the physical activity level in older adults (29.33% decrease in MVPA and 39.2% increase in SB). These findings can be useful in developing guidelines and/or interventions to promote physical activity and healthy aging among older adults, particularly those in social isolation.

Introduction. Physical activity (PA), particularly low-impact activities like bicycling, can improve health in older adults. However, bicycling rates are lower in the Midwest than other regions in the United States. Therefore, it is important to identify unique social, personal, and environmental factors that inhibit or promote bicycling, and how these are associated with PA. The influences of these factors were explored using the social ecological model. Method. A cross-sectional online survey was developed using previously validated local and national bicycling questionnaires, then distributed to Midwestern bicyclists 50 years and older. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to understand the influences of social, personal, and environmental barriers and promoters on bicycling patterns. All models were conducted separately by gender, and accounted for age, race, education, marital status, income, and employment. Results. Social promoters (B = 0.386, p = .002), such as having friends/family that bicycle were associated with greater PA. Personal promoters (B = −0.311, p = .006) such as needing to lose weight were associated with reduced PA. Environmental factors had no associations with PA. However, individual environmental components, such as number of vehicles on the roads, were significantly associated with PA for both males and females. Females reported more barriers than males. The overall model accounted for 16.1% of the total variance in PA levels. Conclusion. Interventions to promote PA via bicycling in older adults should focus on social factors, while also reducing personal-level factors for males. Interventions for females could focus on reducing specific personal, social, and environmental barriers.

Introduction: Simulation is used as a teaching technique in the medical curriculum, and especially for advanced life support (ALS). However, simulated ALS can differ greatly from real life ALS. The aim of this exploratory study was to identify the different disruptors associated with real life ALS. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous, online survey that included 32 items. It was distributed by email to emergency physicians from five emergency departments in Paris. The aim of this online survey was to identify the elements perceived as disruptors during ALS. Other aspects of the survey explored the perceived differences between simulated ALS and real life ALS. Descriptive statistics of percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data. Results: Among 100 surveyed physicians, 43 (43%) answers were analysed. 53% were women with a mean age of 32 ± 3 years old. The identified disruptors from real life ALS were task interruptions mainly from non-medical staff (n = 16; 37%), patient's siblings (n = 5; 12%), other specialists (n = 5; 12%) and the phone calls (n = 2; 5%). The situation of ED overcrowding (n = 12; 28%) was also mentioned as a potential disruptor. Overall, physicians reported that some technical and non-technical tasks were harder to perform in real life compared to simulated sessions. Conclusion: This exploratory study allowed the identification of disruptors encountered in real life cases of ALS, and may be used for future simulation-based teaching to enhance realism during sessions

Abstract This study explored how social workers located in Sydney and Hong Kong conceptualised client empowerment. Further, it investigated these professionals’ perceived facilitators and barriers to their empowerment practices, based on an ecological framework. A cross-sectional online survey was used, where the original Empowerment Scale for clients with mental health issues was adapted to measure conceptualisation of client empowerment from social workers’ perspectives. Eighty-three social workers serving people with mental health issues (MHIs) in Sydney and eighty in Hong Kong responded. A two-factor model was generated suggesting that practitioners tend to conceptualise client empowerment into two aspects: a relation-based dimension and a resource-oriented one. Compared with their Sydney counterparts, the Hong Kong practitioners considered resource-oriented empowerment as more integral to client empowerment (t(161) = 4.17, p < 0.001). Several key factors were found to be independently associated with endorsement of the two-factor client-empowerment model by practitioners: perceived less support from medical specialists but more support from teams serving the same client, perceived benefits of social work training and, finally, beliefs in the importance of social workers’ role in client empowerment. The study highlights the multiple dimensions of client empowerment and a wide range of inter-professional and sociostructural factors enabling social workers’ practices that support empowerment. Our paper highlights the role of professional empowerment as a stepping stone to enable their client-empowerment practices through policy support and inter-professional collaboration.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> The global pandemic COVID-19 has created havoc. Various myths prevail among public that hamper them from adopting evidence based preventive measures to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and to seek timely health advice. The aim of the study was to find out the public’s view on myths related to COVID-19 in educated Nepalese population.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> A cross-sectional web-based online survey was conducted in educated public in Nepal during May, 2020. A self-designed questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic variables and 21 myths was prepared using Google forms via docs.google.com/forms. The responses were recorded on a 3-point scale (agree, disagree, do not know). The Google form link was sent to the study participants via the social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Viber. Descriptive statistics mean, frequency and percentage were used to analyze the data using SPSS version 22.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Out of 270, 33.7%, 33.3% and 37% participants agreed that eating lemon, turmeric and garlic prevents us from COVID-19 respectively. Thirty seven percent participants believed that spraying bleach or disinfectant into our body will protect us against COVID-19. The overall view of participants toward the myths related to COVID-19 was ‘agree’ (17.3%), ‘disagree’ (59.2%) and ‘don’t know’ (23.5%).</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Myths regarding COVID-19 prevailed among majority of the participants in this study. There is an urgent need to educate the public regarding various preventive approaches for COVID-19 issues. Media and government agencies have a vital role in creating awareness to adopt evidence-based facts.</p>

The article defines the algorithm for building the educational environment of the «Social Leadership School – Student» as a factor in the formation of social leadership in the professional training of future social workers, which has a clear logic: presentation of the mission and visit, which provides for informing about the School, its activities, current information for students – future social workers; announcements of news and events, which include coverage of events regarding social leadership, characterization of directions and organizational forms of social leadership, a photo and audio report, an archive of events that took place at the School on these topics. Six consecutive stages of the algorithm for building the educational environment are defined in accordance with the tasks and characterized: the first stage is the definition of the goal of the activity of the Social Leadership School – Student in the context of strategic priorities for taking into account objective world trends in the development of education for social work; the second stage – highlighting the leading idea of the development of the school; the third stage – the definition of values, key directions and scientific approaches to the organization of the School's activities; The fourth stage is the development of directions for achieving the goal and strategic directions for the development of the School; The fifth step is to determine the scale of the transformation; the sixth stage – formation of readiness of all participants in the educational process of the School to form social leadership; the sixth stage – achievement and evaluation of the result – qualitative changes in the system of formation of social leadership of students in the educational process of the «School of Social Leadership – Student». The model of the educational environment of the School of Social Leadership – Student and the structure of its activities are determined in accordance with the normative support for the functioning of the School, which will allow planning the organization and conduct of training programs and activities of the School, in particular in the areas of formation of social leadership; activities on acquisition of leadership skills, development of partnerships. Through the development of the content of selective educational disciplines «Fundamentals of Leadership», «Social Leadership» in the process of training social workers, the formation of the readiness of future social workers for proactive functioning in the informal environment of the «School of Social Leadership – Student» is ensured.

Abstract Background:Burnout is a stress-induced syndrome that is considered closely related to work. Although social support could reduce burnout syndrome, the effect of it on learning burnout in medical students remains unclear. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the association between learning burnout and social support in a cohort of Chinese medical students.Methods:A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to students who participated in online learning in a medical college in Wuhan during the COVID-19 epidemic. We used the Lian version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to assess learning burnout and the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) to assess social support.Results:A total of 684 students completed the survey (response rate of 30.9%), of which 315 (46.12%) met standard criteria for learning burnout. We found grade, family income, learning time, and the number of interactions with teachers or classmates had an effect on students’ learning burnout. After adjusting for the grade and residence, there was a significant and relevant association between the social support and learning burnout. (adjusted odds ratio, 0.93 for 1-point decrease in total SSRS score; 95% CI, 0.90 – 0.96; p < 0.001).Conclusions:Learning burnout was highly prevalent in medical students of our college. The social support especially subjective support and utilization of support played a protective role in reducing the risk of learning burnout.

Social work seen as important for preventing epidemic diseases, especially in times of crisis, however, evidence of this importance is still scarce, especially in the developing world. We addressed this by studying the role of medical social work in raising awareness of preventing epidemic diseases, and an analytical and descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among Saudi social workers and consumers (102). It aims at the extent to which the social worker knows the nature of epidemic diseases. And defining the preventive role of social workers in raising awareness of preventive diseases. The premise is that there is a significant reciprocal relationship between them. Non-probability fit sampling has been implemented; A self-administered questionnaire was developed during the COVID20 virus for the year 2020, it was tested and filled out by 102 male and female social workers, and the results showed that the total weights and percentage of the social worker’s knowledge of the dimensions of epidemic diseases are (3022), (89.70%) respectively and the role of the specialist Social awareness in raising awareness of the preventive disease dimension (3309), (83.2%), respectively, was associated with a strong positive correlation with compliance among respondents, in addition to the study's observation of the relationship between socio-demographic background and study dimensions T. Not significant at the 0.05 level (2 tailed) ( Age, experience, gender, marital status, and residence).
