Objective structured practical examination (OSPE) as a tool in formative assessment of II MBBS students, in pathology

Background: Assessment drives the student learning. Regular periodical assessment not only improves learning habits, but also enhances the competence in all levels of medical education. Traditional practical examination is more subjective. It depends on examiners subjectivity, varying difficulty level of various experiments, and also internal marks variation etc. These flaws can be overcome by newer methods like OSPE. The aim of the study was to implement OSPE as a tool of internal assessment for practical skills in the II MBBS. To compare this with traditional practical examination (TPE). To obtain the students and faculty feedback regarding OSPE as a tool of assessment.Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out for 158 students in II internal pathology practical examination for six days in the second week of September 2016 at Department of Pathology, Dr. Pinnamaneni Siddhartha institute of medical sciences & Research Foundation, Chinnaoutpalli. Faculty and students were sensitized; blueprint were used to arrange twenty OSPE stations for the exercises conducted as per TPE and for the same 25 marks as per TPE. Simultaneously, all the students were subjected to both TPE and OSPE at the same time and venue. TPE was assessed by two professors and OSPE by separate eight faculty members independently without interaction with the students. The procedural stations were evaluated by using checklist and the response stations which consisted of short answers and MCQs, facilitated correction. Feedback was given to the student on their performance and feedback was obtained from the students and faculty regarding OSPE by questionnaire with Yes/No answers.Results: Performance score of students in OPSE (13.73 ±2.49) was higher as compared to TPE (9.27±1.86) which was statistically significant. Based on the response to the questionnaire, students perception towards OSPE was analyzed. Majority strongly agree OSPE to be fairer, more transparent and objective in comparison to TPE. In contrast, all the faculty members unanimously opined that OSPE was difficult to arrange, time taken and faculty versus students ratio was high for evaluation. Though, the faculty (91%) overall opined that OSPE should be included as a method of assessment.Conclusions: Present study revealed that OSPE was acceptable, feasible and reliable to the students as well as for faculty for the internal assessment in pathology. Opinions of both students and faculties strongly agreed that OPSE is more effective objective assessment tool.

Objective: Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) is a growing way of assessing the students of medical universities particularly. This study is targeted to compare and assess different perceptions of the faculty and the students towards OSPE at a public sector medical college. Study Design: Cross Sectional Survey. Setting: Sahiwal Medical College Sahiwal. Period: 1st July 2020 to 15th July 2020. Material & Methods: The questionnaire was sent to all the participants by Whatsapp because of COVID-19 pandemic. All the undergrad students of MBBS (500) and all the faculty members (65) of clinical and basic medical sciences were included in the study. Results: The response rate of faculty members was 78.46% and that of undergraduate students was 70.80%. Out of 51 members who responded, 23 (45.10%) were males while 28 (54.90%) were female. Female students were having majority of participation (71.20%). Most of the faculty and students agreed with the fact that ‘The questions asked in the OSPE stations were appropriate and related to the curriculum’ (60.10% and 45.10% respectively). Response to a question ‘OSPE is more transparent, fair and objective as compared to traditional practical examination’ got a nod from faculty members (49%). Almost 76% of the students (strongly agreed and agreed) thought that OSPE was tiring and stressful for them but their respected faculty members thought the opposite. Conclusion: Our study concludes that there is satisfaction of both students and the faculty regarding their perceptions of OSPE at public sector medical college. In our study while comparing, the majority of both the groups were having almost same opinions.

This study aims to compare quality gap of educational services at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences from students and faculties viewpoints. In a cross-sectional study, survey questionnaire was completed by two distinct groups of respondents– 230 faculty members and 384 students. Mass majority of the both groups declared there was negative gap in each of the five dimensions. Mean quality gaps from viewpoint of both groups were negative. The largest mean quality gap from students and faculty members viewpoint was in the responsiveness and tangibility dimensions respectively. The largest and smallest differences between students and faculties viewpoint were in the responsiveness and tangibility dimensions. Background: Food and nutrition services in hospitals are one of the factors effecting patients’ satisfaction. Appropriate management and supervision in the nutrition sector is an essential factor in reducing the costs and gaining patient satisfaction. The optimal performance of the nutrition sector accelerates improvement and can be useful in their satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patients’ satisfaction with food and nutrition services in 2016-2017, Yazd, Iran. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study population included patients referring to the selected hospitals affiliated to Yazd Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences. A researcher-made questionnaire was used for data collection. This questionnaire had 19 questions that should be answered on a 5-point Likert scale (strongly agree, agree, no idea, disagree, and strongly disagree).  At the end of this questionnaire, a question was presented about the individual’s overall satisfaction with nutrition. Results: The average of patients’ satisfaction with food services was 4.40 ± 0.90. The lowest satisfaction rate was related to the inappropriate quality of dinner with an average of 4.02 ± 1.50. The highest level of satisfaction was related to the hygiene of food with an average of 4.69 ± 0.55. Conclusion: Hospital managers are required to take measures to increase the awareness of nutrition service personnel regarding the health and quality of food, their active presence by patients’ beds, give patients the right to choose, and take the necessary supervision to increase the variety of meals.

Background: Incivility or challenging behaviors in the scientific environment are so harmful that they cannot be neglected. Therefore, these behaviors should be addressed promptly and effectively. The aim of this study was to identify challenging behaviors from other behaviors and evaluate the severity of these behaviors from the viewpoint of university professors in medical students. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on a sample of 110 faculty members in Faculty of Medicine of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. To identify challenging behaviors from other behaviors, the majority (>50%) was considered. Also, to determine the challenging intensity of each behavior, behaviors that had higher scores were regarded as very high challenging behaviors. Results: Based on the review of external and internal resources and the viewpoints of professors,32 behaviors were prepared in the form of a checklist for the faculty members to identify the challenge and severity of it. Behaviors such as student insolence, disturbance of class order, and non-respect of rules, as well as disruptive behavior with professors were recognized as the most challenging behaviors. Regarding the intensity of the student incivility, the disruptive behavior with professors, the non-customary jokes, the disruptive behavior with students, and the lack of compliance with the charter of patient rights were considered as very high incivility. Conclusion: Students’ challenging behaviors interferes in their own learning, others’ learning,staff as well as other individuals’ rights, and order and security of educational environment.Professors and instructors ought to identify these behaviors and manage them.

Background: Faculty member’s attitude is one of the most important factors in the success of electronic learning. Understanding the attitudes of teachers toward e-learning can lead to an appropriate learning environment. This study aimed at examining the attitude of faculty members towards e-Learning at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in 2016. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 334 faculty members from the faculties of university were selected by random stratified sampling method and their attitude was assessed by questionnaires. Data was analyzed using SPSS 20. Results: The mean age of subjects was 49.09 (SD = 7.41). Of the total study population, 57.75% (190) were males and 42.25% (139) were females. The highest mean score among the dimensions of attitude assessment was related to sense of enjoyment with a mean of 29.26 (SD = 0.71) and the lowest mean related to self-efficacy (mean = 5.96) (SD = 0.82). Conclusion: The results of this study show that the attitude of faculty members is positive towards using appropriate e-learning. However, more studies are needed to assess the obstacles and approaches to improve the attitude of faculty members towards e-learning.

Background and objectives: Medical consultations became undeniable elements for the quality of health care and training of medical residence. This study aimed to assess the quality of performed consultations. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study at Shohadaye Tajrish hospital, affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, in Tehran, Iran between 20th April 2018 and 4th May 2019. The reported items and quality score of medical consultation requests and responses between emergency and non-emergency consultations and between the faculty members and medical residents were assessed by SPSS version 21.0. Results: Among 431 medical consultations, most were non-emergency, requested by residents, and responded to by faculty members. The quality of consultations requested (p < 0.001) or responded (p < 0.001) by faculty members was higher than by medical residents. Higher year residents performed higher quality consultation requests (p = 0.008) and responses (p < 0.001). The quality score of consultation requests (p = 0.51) and responses (p = 0.1) had no significant difference between types of consultation. Conclusion: Underreported items of consultation impressed its quality. Faculty members and higher-year residents performed higher quality consultations.

Background and Purpose: Job satisfaction is a positive or positive state, which is the result of an individual job experience assessment. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and burnout in faculty members of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 122 faculty members working in Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences in 2010. In order to collect job satisfaction information, a questionnaire with reliability and reliability (Cronbach's alpha, 95%) and a standardized multivariate questionnaire were used to collect the burnout information from Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to assess the degree of burnout in four The domain of emotional exhaustion, personal performance, personality deprivation and conflict were used. Findings: The majority of the faculty members were male (70.5%), in the medical school (73.8%), with a seniority of 10-6 (35%), and ranked associate professors (54.1%). The frequency of burnout was estimated at 73.8% and 61.5%, respectively. Only 20.5% of faculty members had job dissatisfaction. There was no statistically significant relationship between age and sex variables, years of service, academic rank, educational groups and salary with job satisfaction and burnout (p ≥ 0.05). Conclusion: In general, it can be said that the faculty members of the university have a good job satisfaction, and their job burnout is also acceptable. By examining the causes of dissatisfaction and the factors that contribute to the burnout of the faculty members, Promoted.

Background: Internal assessment plays a key role in improving the quality of education. Objectives: The present study aimed to internally assess the nutrition department of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (KUMS), Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the nutrition department of KUMS. Data were collected using the internal assessment questionnaires based on the guidelines and framework of the ministry. Results: The main factors involved in internal assessment included goals, organizational position, management and organization, faculty staff, students, and educational facilities and equipment, which had a favorable status. In addition, the educational courses, curriculum, and teaching/learning strategies had a relatively favorable status, while graduates had an unfavorable status. In general, the mean of all the internal assessment factors was considered favorable. Conclusions: Although the internal assessment indicated the favorable status of the nutrition department of KUMS, special attention should be paid to the graduates in this regard.

Background: Knowledge sharing within an organization plays a key role in developing scientific production. Objectives: The present study aimed to predict the knowledge sharing intention among the faculty members of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (KUMS), Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 154 faculty members of KUMS in the spring of 2019. Participants were selected via random sampling with a probability proportional to size. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires. Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 16 using independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), bivariate correlations, and linear regression analysis at 95% significance level. Results: The most significant predictors of knowledge sharing intention were attitude (β = 0.387) and perceived behavioral control (β = 0.215). In addition, the predictive constructs of attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control constituted 25% of the variation in the outcome measure of knowledge sharing intention. Conclusions: According to the results, designing interventions focusing on the constructs of attitude and perceived behavior control could yield beneficial findings for promoting knowledge sharing among faculty members.
