Background: With over 93 million donations made every year worldwide, blood transfusion continues to save millions of lives each year and improve the life expectancy and quality of life of patients suffering from life threatening conditions. At the same time, blood transfusion is an important mode of transmission of infection to the recipient. The present study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of HIV, HBV and HCV infections in voluntary blood donors at a tertiary care teaching hospital in Mumbai over a decade.Methods: All voluntary donors reporting to the blood bank were screened for HIV, HBsAg and HCV by using the appropriate enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The study was designed for duration of ten years between January 2008 to December 2017. Medical reports of the donors were accessed from the blood bank records and analyzed.Results: A total of 8928 voluntary blood donors were screened. Amongst the blood donors, seropositivity of HBV (6% to 1.52 %) was highest followed by HIV (2.5% to 0.15%) then HCV (1.85% to 0.37%).Conclusions: Decreasing trends with low prevalence observed in the study is an encouraging sign supporting the growing awareness of these life-threatening diseases.

BACKGROUND The primary aspect of blood transfusion lies in the availability of blood and blood components which are tested and reported negative for transfusion transmitted infections (TTI’s). The increased seroprevalence of TTI’s indicate their prevalence in general public. The study was conducted to analyse the increasing seroprevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) over a period of 3 years. The objectives of the study determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among the voluntary blood donors at a tertiary care hospital & associated blood bank. METHODS This cross-sectional study was done at the Department of Transfusion Medicine, GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, over a period of 3 years from July 2017 to June 2020. The samples collected were screened by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests. RESULTS A total of 69561 blood units were collected during this 3-year study from July 2017 to June 2020. Of all the blood bags screened, the highest prevalence was seen for HBV followed by HCV and HIV. 949 (1.4 %) were reactive for HBV, 75 (0.1 %) were reactive for HIV and 332 (0.5 %) were reactive for HCV. The results show a remarkable increase in the seropositivity for hepatitis C infection. CONCLUSIONS The seroprevalence of HCV has seen an increase in case load over the years as compared to HBV and HIV. This increase in case volume is indicative of impending liver diseases progressing to chronic stage over the years. Thus, it is imperative to create awareness in the general population to help reduce the risk factors responsible for HCV infection. Background: Critical part of transfusion is effective screening of TTI, to reduce the risk of transmission is as safe as possible. The present study has undertaken to focus on seroprevalence of TTIs among both voluntary and replacement donors and also to project epidemiological data of TTIs in this community.Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted from January 2014 to December 2018. All blood samples collected from donors were screened for HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis and malaria according to blood bank policy. Before drawing blood, donors were asked to fill pre structured Blood bank questionnaire and consent form.Results: In this present 5-year study, total number of blood donor population was 54937, among them voluntary donors were 33891 and replacement donors were 21046. Out of 33891 voluntary donors, 33486(98.8%) were males and remaining 405(1.19%) were females. All replacement donors (21046) were males. The seroprevalence of HBV was highest, 1.82% (1003/54937) followed by HCV 0.31% (175/54937) in all the donors. The seropositivity for HIV is 0.23% (129/54937), for syphilis 0.04% (24/54937) and for malaria 0.01% (6/54937).Conclusions: National blood transfusion policy should be strengthening the standards and quality of screening across the country. For blood screening, resources and appropriate screening assays must be available at all health centres.

Introduction: Blood transfusion is a life saving measure, but also carries risk of transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs). In spite of improved donor screening, risk of transmission of TTIs still remains a major concern. Stringent screening of blood not only ensures safe supply of blood and blood products, but also gives us an idea about prevalence of TTIs among general population. Methodology: Blood donors (voluntary and replacement), fulfilling national and regional blood bank criteria, attended our blood bank, during Jan 2015-Dec 2016 (included). Retrospective data analysis was performed by a structured database. After obtaining informed consent, venous blood was collected and analysed for HBsAg, anti-HCV and Anti-HIV1&2 (Chemiluminescent assay -OrthoVitrosECi/ECiQ), Malaria (ICT–pf/pan-Alere) and Syphilis (RPR-Labcare Dignotics). Results: A total of 9027 donors were screened; Males and females were 99.23% and 0.76% respectively with the mean age of 27.4 ± 2years (19-58years). Voluntary donors were 68.7%; replacement donors 31.3%. Voluntary donation increased by 3% in 2016 (69.7%) vs 2015 (67.1%). TTI prevalence was 1.12% (102/9027). Surprisingly prevalence was higher among voluntary donors, females and 21-30 years. Seroprevalence of HBV (0.42%), HIV (0.13%), and Malaria (0.01%), in our region was relatively inferior than other parts of country. Nonetheless, HCV (0.56%) infections were on the rise. No syphilis case was reported. Low seropositivity rate is believed to be attributed to improved counselling of blood donors, adherence to standard donor selection criteria and rational use of blood. Conclusion: Even though low prevalence, effective control strategies including stringent screening, implementation of more sensitive tests and health education are urgently needed to prevent those TTIs.

Background: Timely transfusion of blood saves millions of lives, but unsafe transfusion practices puts millions of people at risk of transfusion transmissible infections (TTIs). Blood transfusion carries the risk of transfusion-transmissible infections including human immunodeficiency virus (HIVI&II), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), malaria and syphilis. With every unit of blood there are 1% chances of transfusion associated diseases.Methods: This study was conducted over a period of 3 years (1stJanuary 2015-31st December 2017) at hospital blood bank of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba (H.P). The study was conducted on both voluntary and replacement blood donors who came to our blood bank and voluntary blood donation camps in and around Chamba. Statistical analysis used. Collected data was analyzed using appropriate statistical softwares such as EPI-INFO and MS-Excel.Results: In our study, we observed a total of 2616 donors over a period of 3 years. In the present study, 847 (32.37%) were voluntary donors and 1769 (67.62%) were replacement donors. Out of 2616 blood samples, 8 were HBsAg positive, 1 HCV positive.Conclusions: Our study shows that the number of blood donors is increasing every year. In our study, the seroprevalence of HBsAg was 0.3% and Hep C was 0.03% in total blood donors. The knowledge of current infectious disease pattern and trends in donor population can help in planning of future blood transfusion related health challenges.

INTRODUCTION: India being the second highly populated nation in the world. HIV/AIDS has acquired pandemic proportion in the world. Estimate by WHO for current infection rate in Asia. India has the third largest HIV epidemic in the world. HIV prevalence in the age group 15-49 yrs was an estimate of 0.2%. India has been classified as an intermediate in the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) endemic (HBsAg carriage 2-7%) zone with the second largest global pool of chronic HBV infections. Safety assessment of the blood supply, the quality of screening measures and the risk of transfusion transmitted infectious diseases (TTIs) in any country can be estimated by scrutinizing the files of blood donors. After the introduction of the blood banks and improved storage facilities, it became more extensively used. Blood is one of the major sources of TTIs like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, syphilis, and many other blood borne diseases. Disclosure of these threats brought a dramatic change in attitude of physicians and patients about blood transfusion. The objective of this study is to determine the seroprevalence of transfusion transmitted infections amidst voluntary blood donors at a rural tertiary healthcare teaching hospital in Chhattisgarh. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out in Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial Medical College, Kachandur, Durg. Blood donors were volunteers, or and commercial donors who donated the blood and paid by patients, their families, or friends to replace blood used or expected to be used for patients from the blood bank of the hospital. After proper donation of blood routine screening of blood was carried out according to standard protocol. Laboratory diagnosis of HIV 1 and HIV 2 was carried out by ELISA test. Hepatitis B surface antigen was screened by using ELISA. RESULTS: A total of 1915 consecutive blood donors’ sera were screened at Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial Medical College, blood bank during study period. Of these 1914 were male and 1 female. The mean age of patients was found to be 29.34 years with standard deviation (SD) of 11.65 Years. Among all blood donors in present study, 759(39.63%) were first time donors and 1156(60.37%) were repeated donors. 1 patient was HIV positive in first donation group while 3 (75%) were positive in repeat donation group. 7 (38.9%) were HBsAg positive in in first donation group while 11(61.1%) were positive in repeat donation group. Two patients in first donation group had dual infection of HIV and HBsAg. CONCLUSION: Seropositivity was high in repeated donors as compared to first time donors. The incidence of HIV is observed to be 0.2% and that of HBsAg is 0.94%. Strict selection of blood donors should be done to avoid transfusion-transmissible infections during the window period.

INTRODUCTION: Blood transfusion is an important concern for the society, as it is life saving for patients with bleeding disorders, accidents, surgeries, inherited/acquired hematological diseases and malignancies. Generally, donors are classied into the following categories: voluntary, family replacement, remunerated or paid donors, and autologous donor. AIMS & OBJECTIVES:To understand the importance of Blood & its safe Transfusion practice in a Teaching Hospital. METHODOLOGY: An Observational study was conducted over a period of 12 months from January 2019 to December 2019 in a 750 –bedded Tertiary Care Hospital of Jammu(UT). OBSERVATIONS: In addition to providing Blood-Transfusion Services to the patients admitted in SMGS Hospital Jammu & Other Associated Hospitals of GMC Jammu, the Blood-Bank is also catering to the needs of Registered Private Nursing Homes & Hospitals of Jammu(UT).This Blood-Bank has exceptionally maintained a record of consuming the whole stock of Blood without wasting even a single pint of blood. DISCUSSION: The Aim of Blood Transfusion Services is to supply good Quality of Blood & its Components to the Patients & avoid any risk to the Donors as well as Recepients. Hence it is extremely essential to institute strict Quality Control Measures RECOMMENDATIONS: Recommended that Upgradation of Blood-Bank is essential to cater with the needs of Additional bed-strength that SMGS Hospital is going to acquire in the coming future.

Background: This study aims to measure the quality of life (QoL) scores in children with thalassemia major following up at a tertiary care center for routine blood transfusion in comparison to healthy children.Methods: A case control study design was adopted, wherein on the QoL of 36 children with thalassemia in the age group 5 to 18 following up for blood transfusion at Goa Medical College, was measured using PedsQL™ 4.0. This was compared to the QoL in age and gender matched healthy children from a government school. A higher score on a subscale indicates better quality of life on this instrument.Results: The children with thalassemia had lower mean scores on physical (67.85 vs 84.24; P <0.001), social (78.34 vs 87.95; P=0.002) and school (62.64 vs 79.48; P <0.001) functioning subscales compared to the healthy children. They also had lower mean psychosocial summary score (73.32 vs 82.01; P=0.003) and total health summary score (71.95 vs 82.57; P <0.001). The physical functioning subscale had significantly higher score among the children who were on chelation and also among the ones whose parents reported as being informed about the condition.Conclusions: The children with thalassemia have poor QoL in physical, social and school functioning domains. Improvement in QoL requires consolidated efforts on part of doctors, parents, school authorities and policy makers. These patients should be provided with low cost-effective chelation therapy. The parents need to be counselled about this disease by the treating team.
