Background: Magnesium deficiency is a common problem in diabetic patients. Magnesium deficiency may increase the incidence of Type 2 Diabetic (T2D) and occurrence complications. Objective of this study aimed at determining the differences in serum magnesium levels and lipid profile among patients newly diagnosed with T2D and normoglycemic individuals.Methods: The cross sectional observation study design was conducted at Sri Aurobindo Medical College, from March 2018 to April 2019. Source populations were all patients who attending to the OPD, Department of General Medicine. A total of 75 patients were enrolled in this study. This study was divided in two group’s cases group (T2D) and second control group (Non-diabetic). First group not initiated on any oral-hypoglycaemic, anti-hypertensive or lipid lowering drugs, and healthy patients were included in control group.Results: Triglycerides (TG), Total Cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) showed significantly (p<0.001) higher mean levels in T2D compared to the controls. The Magnesium and High-Density Lipoproteins-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were significantly (p<0.001) lower among the T2D group compared to the control group. There was a significant inverse correlation (r2= 0.567, p<0.001) between Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) levels and serum magnesium.Conclusions: Serum magnesium levels and lipid profile were significantly different in T2D patients compared to control group.

Investigation of the serum level of copper, zinc, magnesium and manganese in type-2 diabetes mellitus and their possible association with lipid profile was carried out. The comparative study included 100 type-2 diabetic patients in Gr-II and 100 non-diabetic as control in (Gr-I). Results indicated that there is a significant lower level (p < .001) of serum Zn, Cu, Mg and Mn in diabetic patients compared with the control group, showing p value < .001. In type-2 DM patients (Gr-II) there were significant correlations between serum Zn and TAG (r = 0.209) and between Zn and HDL-C level (r = .199) showing p value <.05. Non significant relationships were found in between Zn and lipid profile (TAG, Cholesterol, HDL-C and LDL-C) of control (Gr-I) group. Significant correlation was found between serum magnesium and TAG of control (Gr-I) where p < .01 and non significant correlations were found in serum Mg and total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C of both type-2 diabetic (Gr-II) and control (Gr-I). Significant correlations were also found in between serum of Cu and Mn and TAG of control (Gr-I) where p < .05 and non significant correlations were found in other component of lipid profile of both cases (Gr-II) and control (Gr-I).Journal of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, Vol. 40, No. 1, 79-85, 2016

Background: Hypomagnesaemia may be considered as one of the aggravating factors for insulin resistance. The kidneys lose their ability to maintain magnesium levels during periods of uncontrolled hyperglycaemia which may then result in lower blood levels of magnesium. Lipid profile and magnesium show significant variability in diabetes. The objective of the present study was to compare serum magnesium levels, lipid profile and HbA1c levels among patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and normoglycemic individuals.Methods: The study was conducted during 60 patients (30 cases and 30 controls) attending to the diabetes clinic. Cases were 30 newly detected T2DM subjects, proved normotensives, not initiated on any oral- hypoglycaemic, anti-hypertensive or lipid lowering drugs, aged between 20 to 30 years. Controls were similar age and gender matched non-diabetics. The biochemical parameters like Mg levels, HbA1c and lipid profile were compared between cases and controls.Results: The serum magnesium and HDL-C levels were significantly (p<0.001) lower among the diabetics compared to the healthy subjects. TG, total cholesterol, LDL-C showed significantly (p<0.001) higher mean levels in diabetics compared to the controls.Conclusions: Serum magnesium levels and lipid profile were significantly different in diabetic patients compared to normal individuals.

Abstract Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of anethum graveolens (dill) powder supplementation on glycemic control, lipid profile, some antioxidants and inflammatory markers, and gastrointestinal symptoms in type 2 diabetic patients. Material and methods: In this study, 42 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomly allocated to intervention and control groups and received either 3g/day dill powder or placebo (3 capsules/day, 1 g each). Fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA- IR), lipid profile, hs-C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), and gastrointestinal symptoms were measured in all of the subjects at baseline and post-intervention. Results: The dill powder supplementation significantly decreased the mean serum levels of insulin, HOMA-IR, LDL-C, TC, and MDA in the intervention group in comparison with the baseline measurements (p < 0.05). Also, the mean serum levels of HDL and TAC were significantly increased in the intervention group in comparison with the baseline measurement (p < 0.05). Colonic motility disorder was the only gastrointestinal symptom whose frequency was significantly reduced by supplementation (P = 0.01). The mean changes of insulin, LDL-C , TC, and MDA were significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, the mean changes in HDL were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Dill powder supplementation can be effective in controlling the glycemic, lipid, stress oxidative, and gastrointestinal symptoms in type 2 diabetic patients. Background: Evidence shows that high density lipoproteins (HDLs) may exert multiple anti-atherogenic and anti-thrombotic effects that together decrease the risk of cardiovascular morbidity in hyperlipidaemic state. Experimental studies showed that fresh wheatgrass (Triticum aestivum Linn.) juice exerts lipid lowering effect as well as increases HDL-cholesterol level in rats. Objective: The present study was done to observe the effect of wheatgrass juice on serum HDL-cholesterol on experimentally induced dyslipidaemic rats evident by reduced HDL-cholesterol level. Materials and method: This experimental study was carried out in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from July 2009 to June 2010. A total number of 48 healthy adult male Long Evans rats, age ranging from 2-3 months, and weighing from 140-200 grams were used for the present study. Six rats were taken in each group of total 8 groups treated differently with 1 control group. Rats of the first 5 groups were sacrificed at 29th day and their lipid profile was measured. Rests of the rats were sacrificed at 57th day and their lipid profile was measured. Results: Mean HDL-cholesterol of the group of rats treated with 10 mL/kg grass juice and 1% cholesterol diet, with 10 mL/kg grass juice and with 20 mL/kg grass juice were significantly increased (P<0.05, P<0.05, P<0.01 respectively). The mean HDL-cholesterol of the group treated with Atorvastatin for 28 days were also significantly increased (P<0.001).Conclusion: The present experiment showed that HDL-cholesterol level is increased by ingestion of wheat grass juice in experimental animals. Therefore, it provides the initial step for demonstrating cardio-protective effect of wheatgrass juice by increasing HDL-cholesterol level in blood in dyslipidaemic state. Abstract Background In the present study, our goal was to assess the impact of type 2 diabetes mellites (T2DM) on osteoporosis markers (sclerostin and CTRP3) among postmenopausal women, and whether sclerostin and CTRP3 can be used as early biomarkers of osteoporosis/osteopenia in T2DM patients. Methods In a comparative, observation, study, a total of 30 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis/osteopenia and T2DM were included, as well as 30 non-diabetic women with osteoporosis/osteopenia. Thirty age and sex-matched healthy women were included as control groups. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to assess the serum levels of sclerostin and CTRP3. Results A total of 90 women were included in the present study (30 patients per group). The serum CTRP3 was significantly lower in the DM-OST (3.45 ± 3.5 ng/dL) and OST (9.15 ± 3.65 ng/dL) groups than the control group (16.80 ± 0.55 ng/dL; p < 0.001); likewise, the serum sclerostin was higher in the DM-OST (109.95 ± 28.96 pmol/L) and OST (51.52 ± 23.18 pmol/L) than the control group (11.22 ± 1.21 pmol/L; p < 0.001). Notably, the serum CTRP3 was significantly lower and sclerostin was significantly higher in the DM-OST group than the OST group (p < 0.001)). In the DM + OST and OST groups, the serum CTRP3 correlated positively with BMD of lumbar spines, left femur, and left forearm. Serum CTRP3 was associated with lower risk of osteoporosis (OR) and diabetes (OR) in postmenopausal women. In addition, the serum sclerostin was associated with higher risk of osteoporosis (OR) and diabetes (OR) in postmenopausal women. Conclusion The present study provides a novel evidence about the impact of T2DM on osteoporosis biomarkers, serum CTRP3 and sclerostin. The results indicated that women with combined T2DM and osteoporosis/osteopenia exhibited more dysregulation in both biomarkers than women with osteoporosis/osteopenia. alone. Thus, serum CTRP3 and sclerostin can be used as biomarkers for early detection of osteoporosis in diabetic patients.

The aim was to compare the heel pad thickness (HPT) in diabetic patients with high biochemical parameters (fasting blood sugar [FBS], hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c], and lipid profile) with nondiabetic counterparts. A total of 438 subjects made up of 216 diabetics with high biochemical parameters (poorly controlled) and 222 apparently healthy subjects were recruited. The HPT, FBS level, HbA1c values and lipid profile, and duration of diabetes mellitus were assessed. Results showed that the mean HPT was 13.33 ± 1.29 mm in the control subjects and 16.79 ± 1.84 mm in diabetics. The HPT among diabetics differed significantly from the control group ( P < .05). The mean value of HbA1c in the control group was 5.4 ± 1.3 compared to diabetics with values of 8.53 ± 2.1. The values of HbA1c among diabetics were significantly higher than that of the control group ( P < .05). HPT had a significant linear relationship with HbA1c among the diabetic subjects ( r = 0.42, P < .05).

Background: Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder resulting from deficiency of thyroid hormones, and Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that share the phenotype of hyperglycaemia. Both the endocrinopathies have been found to be associated with dyslipidaemia and atherosclerosis that result into various complications. Our aim was to assess the difference of dyslipidaemia in patients suffering from hypothyroidism with diabetes as compared to diabetes alone.Methods: Study was conducted in department of medicine in SGRDIMSR, Sri Amritsar. A total of 120 patients were enrolled for the present study, the one who presented to hospital from January 2018 to August 2019 diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 2. The patients were divided into two groups. 60 patients having type 2 diabetes without hypothyroidism (control group). 60 patients having type 2 diabetes with hypothyroidism (study group). Fasting lipid profile were performed in both the groups and were analysed for the study.Results: Dyslipidaemia was seen more in study group as compared to control group with mean cholesterol of 488.3(±144.43) and mean triglyceride levels of 354.30(±128.57) in study  group as compared to control group with mean cholesterol and triglyceride levels of 179.7(±81.47) and 177.08(±118.18) with p-value of 0.001 and 0.01 respectively which were significant. Also, obesity and diabetic complication were more in patients of dual endocrinopathies as compared to diabetes alone which were also significant statistically.Conclusions: From our study it is concluded that type 2 diabetes with hypothyroidism causes more dyslipidaemia as compare to type 2 diabetes alone. So proper screening of thyroid profile of type 2 diabetic patients and its correction helps in achieving better lipidemic control which further prevent complications.

Background: In advanced diabetes mellitus, serum levels of the most hormones are altered due to several interplaying mechanisms. Objective: To assess the relation of serum leptin and lipid profile in type 2 diabetic nephropathy. Patients and Method: Serum leptin levels and its relation to lipid profile were estimated in 62 patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy attending the National Diabetes Center in Al- Mustansiriya University, and (26) healthy individuals considered as control group. The diabetic patients were classified into three groups, (24) pathients with normoalbuminuria (21) patients with microalbuminuria and (17) patients with macroalbuminuria. Fasting plasma glucose, serum creatinine, Hb A1c %, lipid profile (Total cholesterol, LDL- Cholesterol, HDL- Cholesterol and Triglyceride) and urinary albumin, were measured to establish the possibility of using these biomarkers as a supplementary to serum leptin to be a diagnostic test for type 2 diabetic nephropathy. Results: Serum leptin levels showed a significant elevation in microalbuminuria (20.08± 4.50 ng/ml) and macroalbuminuria groups (22.35± 6.89 ng/ml) as compared to nondiabetic normal control group (10.64 ± 3.17 ng/ml). There was no significant differences observed in serum leptin levels between the normoalbuminuria group (13.96 ± 5.73 ng/ml) and healthy controls, but a significant positive differences were noticed in the levels of fasting plasma glucose, serum creatinine, Hb A1c% and lipid profile in the three patient groups in comparison with the control group. While no significant correlation was observed between these biomarkers levels and serum leptin values. Conclusion: It might be concluded that serum leptin levels were elevated in type 2 diabetic patients with microalbuminuria and macroalbuminuria, suggesting that renal leptin degradation is impaired in early stage of kidney damage and this impairment increase with the progression of this disease. Leptin hormone may consider according to these results as a risk factor for progression of kidney disease in diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is one of the main risk factors of cardiovascular disease in people with diabetes. The principle of diabetes prevention and control is based on patient self-care and education. The Islamic self-care nutrition method is a common and successful way to modify behavior in Islamic ethics and mysticism. AIM: The study aimed to determine the effect of the Islamic self-care nutrition method on the lipid profile of patients with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present clinical trial was conducted in 2014 on 98 middle-aged patients with type 2 diabetes referred to the Diabetes Center of the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, Sari, Iran, who were randomly allocated into two groups of experimental and control. Lipid indices were measured before intervention, and the same education about diabetic healthy diet was provided in both groups. In addition, in the experimental group, Islamic teachings and the Islamic self-care method of nutrition were taught with the intention of pleasing God. Data were analyzed with SPSS 22 software using independent and paired t-test, Chi-square, Fisher’s exact, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). RESULTS: After adjusting for the effect of confounding variables with ANCOVA, significant improvement was observed in triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein indices in the experimental group after intervention compared to the control group. Two-proportion z-test results showed a significant increase in the use of lipid-lowering drugs in the control group compared with the experimental group after intervention. CONCLUSION: The Islamic self-care nutrition method could be used to control chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes affected by behavioral factors.
