Background: Pregnant women are among the groups at high risk of vitamin D3 deficiency due to the increased need for micro and macro nutrients during pregnancy. Vitamin D3 deficiency is associated with pregnancy complications, namely preterm birth, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and babies born small according to their gestational age. Methods: The study involved a randomized pretest-posttest control group design. Subjects selected include 80 pregnant women in second trimester. Data were collected in June 2020 to September 2020. The respondents were then randomly divided into 2 groups, comprising 40 each, where the first received 400 IU/day vitamin D3 supplementation for 12 weeks, and the second served as a control. Furthermore, 25 (OH) D were measured by using the ELISA method. Results: The mean value of the 25(OH)D levels after D3 supplementation and statistically showed a significant difference with a significance value of p<0.05 (0.01), compared to the control group.  Furthermore, the mean value of the 25(OH)D levels in the control group actually decreased by 2.7 ng/ml which was statistically significant with a p value of 0.00, compared to the control group. Furthermore, the mean value of the 25(OH)D levels in the control group actually decreased by 2.7 ng/ml which was statistically significant with a p value of 0.00.Conclusions: Vitamin D3 supplement of 400 IU per day can increase the levels of 25(OH)D in the II and III trimester of pregnant women in antenatal care (ANC), Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta.

Background: Although neonatal jaundice occurs in 60% of term infants, very little evidence is available on how to prevent it. Given the ethno-medical use of chicory aroma water (CAW) for the management of jaundice by Iranian pregnant women, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether the frequent CAW consumption was associated with fewer jaundice symptoms after 40 days. Materials and Methods: A single blind randomized controlled trial was designed to enroll participants from Lolagar Hospital, Tehran, Iran. Pregnant women (n=80) were randomly divided into two groups. The trial group was provided with common diet and an instruction to consume CAW. The control group was maintained on common diet. The proportion of phototherapy and mean value of bilirubin were measured and compared between the two groups. (IRCT registry number: IRCT2017041633475N1) Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the mean value of bilirubin between the women with frequent CAW consumption compared with the control. Also, the intake of CAW was not associated with a marked improvement in the need for phototherapy (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study highlighted that the intake of CAW by pregnant women failed to ameliorate neonatal jaundice.[GMJ.2017;6(4):312-8] DOI: 10.22086/gmj.v6i4.973

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of implant surface treatment with carboxyethylphosphonic acid and fibroblast growth factor 2 on the bone–implant interface during the osseointegration period in vivo using an animal model. The present research was carried out in six minipigs, in whose left tibia implants were inserted as follows: eight implants with a standard surface treatment, for the control group, and eight implants with a surface treatment of carboxyethylphosphonic acid and immobilization of FGF-2, for the test group. At 4 weeks after the insertion of the implants, the animals were sacrificed for the histomorphometric analysis of the samples. The means of the results for the implant–bone contact variable (BIC) were 46.39 ± 17.49% for the test group and 34.00 ± 9.92% for the control group; the difference was not statistically significant. For the corrected implant–bone contact variable (BICc), the mean value of the test group was 60.48 ± 18.11%, and that for the control group, 43.08 ± 10.77%; the difference was statistically significant (p-value = 0.035). The new bone formation (BV/TV) showed average results of 27.28 ± 3.88% for the test group and 26.63 ± 7.90% for the control group, meaning that the differences were not statistically significant (p-value = 0.839). Regarding the bone density at the interthread level (BAI/TA), the mean value of the test group was 32.27 ± 6.70%, and that of the control group was 32.91 ± 7.76%, with a p-value of 0.863, while for the peri-implant density (BAP/TA), the mean value of the test group was 44.96 ± 7.55%, and that for the control group was 44.80 ± 8.68%, without a significant difference between the groups. The current research only found a significant difference for the bone–implant contact at the cortical level; therefore, it could be considered that FGF-2 acts on the mineralization of bone tissue. The application of carboxyethylphosphonic acid on the surface of implants can be considered a promising alternative as a biomimetic coating for the immobilization of FGF-2. Despite no differences in the new bone formation around the implants or in the interthread or peri-implant bone density being detected, the biofunctionalization of the implant surface with FGF-2 accelerates the mineralization of the bone–implant interface at the cortical level, thereby reducing the osseointegration period.

In pregnant women who previously did not have hypertension pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy complication, which characterized by the increased of blood pressure, proteinuria and/or oedema. One of theory about aetiology of pre-eclampsia suggests that this is caused by endothelial damage that can lead to adhesion and platelet aggregation. The aim of this study was to know the platelet count and indices by analyzing, such as mean platelet volume (MPV), its distribution width (PDW) and the large cell ratio (P-LCR) for diagnostic confirmation in pre-eclampsia patients. This research was a retrospective study using secondary data of routine blood test from medical records of pre eclampsia patients who were treated at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital during the period of January to December 2011 and the normal pregnant women data that were taken as control. The data obtained were platelet count, MPV, PDW, P-LCR and analyzed using independent T test. The results showed that the mean platelet count in pre-eclampsia patients was lower than the control but had no statistically significant difference (p=0.325) whereas the mean of MPV, PDW and P-LCR in pre-eclampsia patients increased compared to the control group and was statistically significant with p value of MPV (p=0.003), PDW (p=0.002) and P-LCR (p=0.010). In conclusion, platelet indices can be used as diagnostic confirmation markers in pre-eclampsia patients.

ABSTRACT Background: Emesis gravidarum can get worse into hyperemesis gravidarum which causes the body to become weaker, paler, and the frequency of urination decreases. As a result, decreased body fluids and hemoconcentration of blood can cause tissue damage. Non pharmacological treatment is very important because it reduces the pharmacological effects that appear in pregnant women. The herbal therapy that has been proven to be beneficial is the administration of peppermint, but research on the effects of Pamelo fruit related to nausea and vomiting in pregnant women is still rare. Objective: To determine the comparison of the effectiveness of peppermint and Pomelo orange on the intensity of nausea and vomiting in pregnant womenMethods: The research design was a quasi experimental study with a pretest posttest control group design approach. The number of samples was 24 pregnant women who were grouped into 3 groups. Results: The average intensity of nausea and vomiting in the peppermint group at pretest was 2.38 and decreased at posttest to 1 with P-value 0.004. The intensity of nausea and vomiting in the Pomelo group at pretest was 6.38, falling to 1.75 at posttest with P-value 0.000. The result of further test showed that there was no significant difference in the intensity of nausea and vomiting between the two groups with Sig. 0.428.Conclusion: Peppermint and pomelo are effective in reducing the intensity of nausea and vomiting in trimester I pregnant women.Suggestion : This research needs to be refined by enlarging the research sample and measuring the intensity of nausea and vomiting can be done every day during the study considering that this study only measured twice the number of 24 respondents. Keywords : Nausea, Vomiting, Pregnancy, Peppermint, Pomelo ABSTRAK Latar Belakang : Emesis gravidarum dapat bertambah berat menjadi hiperemesis gravidarum yang mengakibatkan tubuh semakin lemah, pucat, dan frekuensi buang air kecil menurun.
