Background: Leprosy can affect the quality of life (QOL) of a person in many ways. Deformities and disabilities in leprosy leads to physical impairment. The stigma associated with leprosy leads to social isolation, which affects patient psychologically. By assessing the QOL would give an in-depth understanding of the effects on leprosy in different dimensions of health. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the QOL of 572 adult leprosy patients attending clinics in the western province using a locally validated Sinhala version of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Consecutive sampling method was used and data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire (IAQ). The scores ranged from 1 to 5 for overall QOL and overall general health questions. Results: The overall QOL had a mean score of 3.4 (SD=0.8) and overall general health had a mean of 3.6 (SD=2.2). The mean scores of domains of WHOQOL-BREF included physical 69.8 (SD=17.1), psychological 68.2 (SD=16.6), social 55.1 (SD=25.0), environment 64 (SD=18.3) in the sample. With regards to socio-demographic factors, a higher QOL was observed in patients <60 years, male sex, passed O/L or above and currently employed with an income of rupees forty thousand (200$) or more and living in a permanent house. Higher QOL was also observed in patients without disability and who perform daily activities alone. Conclusions: QOL of leprosy patients was higher in physical, psychological, environment domains and was lower in the social domain. Continuous awareness programmes should be conducted for health workers and community to early identification, which reduces disabilities and improve QOL.

Objective: to ascertain the association between the social support and the quality of life of relative caregivers of elderly dependents at home.Method: a cross-sectional study conducted with 58 relative caregivers of elderly dependents, registered in the Family Health Strategy. Data were collected from the Katz instrument, sociodemographic, Zarit Burden Interview, WHOQOL-bref, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. Results: the majority of caregivers were women, who took care full-time and presented moderate to severe burden. Most caregivers are satisfied with their social relationships and the social support received. It is found that the burden and the time of care correlated with the social relationships domain, which is associated with social support, and consequently, reduced quality of life. Conclusion: social support for caregivers is important to prevent health implications, burden, biopsychosocial stress, and provide favorable conditions for quality of life, by allowing greater freedom to develop their daily activities.

The objective of this study was to identify the association between emotional distress and social support networks with quality of life in primary care patients. This was a cross-sectional study involving 1,466 patients in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2009/2010. The General Health Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the brief version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument were used. The Social Support Network Index classified patients with the highest and lowest index as socially integrated or isolated. A bivariate analysis and four multiple linear regressions were conducted for each quality of life outcome. The means scores for the physical, psychological, social relations, and environment domains were, respectively, 64.7; 64.2; 68.5 and 49.1. In the multivariate analysis, the psychological domain was negatively associated with isolation, whereas the social relations and environment domains were positively associated with integration. Integration and isolation proved to be important factors for those in emotional distress as they minimize or maximize negative effects on quality of life.

Substantial changes in life dynamics resulting from the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) could have an impact on the quality of life (QoL) of mothers of children with and without disabilities. This study compared the quality of life (QoL) of mothers of children with disabilities (MCD) to the QoL of mothers of children without disabilities (CON) in Saudi Arabia during COVID-19 lockdown. It explored mothers’ concerns and the type of support they need during the quarantine. A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted during the lockdown. An online questionnaire was distributed to mothers raising children with and without disabilities in Saudi Arabia. A total of 340 mothers participated in the study by completing the survey: 93 MCD and 247 CON. The QoL of MCD and CON was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Furthermore, detailed information was provided by the mothers regarding their needs and concerns during the lockdown. The results of the study revealed that the overall QoL was significantly higher in the CON group, compared to the MCD group, during the COVID-19 lockdown. The social well-being and environmental well-being reported by MCD were significantly lower on the total scale of the WHOQOL-BREF than those reported by the CON group. The comparison between the two groups revealed significant differences in the support required by mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic: a higher percentage of MCD needed emotional and psychological support, especially from family members. The major concerns reported by MCD were the deterioration of their children’s medical conditions and the lack of medical supplies during the lockdown.

Abstract Background: In Pakistan there is a dire need to explore the quality of life in infertile males and females and its undesirable psychological outcomes. Thus, the aim of this study was: 1. To compare the QoL of males and females presenting at an infertility centre for treatment, 2. To assess the association of QoL with resilience, depression, and other socio-demographic factors in males and females presenting at an infertility clinic for treatment. Methods: An Analytical Cross-Sectional study was conducted and the study participants were recruited from the Australian Concept Infertility Medical Centre (ACIMC), Karachi, Pakistan. The non-probability (purposive) sampling strategy was used to recruit the participants. The sample size was 668. Data was analysed using STATA version 12. Results: After adjusting for the covariates we observed that the males who were less resilient their QoL was 8.47 units significantly lower and those who were depressed their QoL was 17.849 units significantly lower as compared to those who were more resilient and less depressed. Moreover, formal education, low monthly income, and friends were significantly associated with QoL among males . On the other hand, females who were less resilient their QoL was 8.606 units lower and those who were depressed their QoL was 19.387 units significantly lower as compared to those who were more resilient and less depressed. Additionally, formal education and low monthly income had a significant association with QoL among females. Conclusion: Fertility related QoL of men and women has a significant association with no formal education, number of friends, income, depression and resilience. Therefore, health care professionals in the field of infertility must be adequately trained to respond to the needs of individuals going through these psychological problems.

Background: The quality of life in osteoporosis is studied for men rather than for women. Aim of the study was to determine how bone mass density (BMD) relates to life quality components and the severity of pain felt by men affected by osteoporosis. Methods: Presented research is a cross-sectional study. The cohort of 62 men aged 65 to 85 years was divided into a group with osteoporosis (N = 27) and a group without osteoporosis (N = 35). The participants’ quality of life was measured with the Qualeffo41 Questionnaire, BMD was quantified by densitometry, and pain intensity was assessed on the Visual Analogue Scale. Results: We found that lower BMD was strongly correlated to participants’ quality of life (r = −0.72), especially the quality of leisure and social activities (r = −0.66), general health perception (r = −0.59), and mobility (r = −0.57). Pain significantly affected general health perception in older men with osteoporosis. General health assessment and pain were highly correlated with each other (r = 0.888). Conclusion: BMD and the overall quality of life of the study participants were related to each other. The strongest relationship occurred between reduced BMD and leisure and social activities component. The pain significantly affected participants’ general health perception. The results may be employed to create new prophylactic strategies to improve life quality in men with osteoporosis.
