It has been noted that in the Indian population the incidence of thyroid disorder is common and its incidence rises with advancing age. Screening for thyroid disorder is indicated for the certain high risk patients such as elderly and those already having other endocrinal disorders There are various studies that have shown a finding that a higher than normal prevalence of thyroid disorders in type 2 diabetic patients, of which hypothyroidism is the commonest disorder Owing to this we at the medical college at south India decided to evaluate the occurrence of thyroid dysfunction in patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and also to compare the level of thyroid dysfunction in the younger and the older population.Department of surgery, medicine and Pharmacology at Al Azhar Medical College Thodupuzha, Kerala, India for a duration of 3 years on 300 patients. The present study was an observational study during the period of study, the test subjects patients having diabetes mellitus and healthy individuals (Controls)coming for regular health check-up with no co morbidities detected were included in this study as controls.In the non -geriatric age group the mean age was 49.6 years SD + 8.15 years and in the geriatric age group the mean age was 68.78 years SD + 4.83 years. The commonest age group in the study was between the age of 61-70 years with of the study population. The age group in the present study ranged between the age of 30 years and 79 years. The incidence of diabetes mellitus increased with age, but the control of sugars is better with age thyroid dysfunction was as follows 20% had hyperthyroidism (36%) hypothyroidism. There is a linear increase with the prevalence of thyroid disorders with age with a r= 0.77 and p < 0.05.The incidence of thyroid dysfunction also increased with age As compared to the non -geriatric group which was the incidence higher in older age group p < 0.05.This study reveals about at least one in three who have DM are suffering from thyroid dysfunction, that increases with increasing age and uncontrolled sugars in this part of the world, which might warrant routine screening.

<strong>Background:</strong>Diabetes has become a major health challenge worldwide. Various studies have found that diabetes and thyroid disorders mutually influence each other and both disorders tend to coexist.<p><strong>Objective:</strong> To find out the prevalence of thyroid disorders in patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus.</p><p><strong>Material and Methods:</strong> The study was conducted on 200 patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus aged between 40-70 years. All the patients were evaluated for thyroid dysfunction by testing thyroid profile (T<sub>3</sub>, T<sub>4</sub>&amp;TSH). The correlation of prevalence of thyroid disorder with gender distribution, age distribution, HbA1C, duration of diabetes, hypertension, family history of thyroid disorder, BMI, usage of OHA's and insulin and dyslipidemia was then done. The observations and interpretations were recorded and results obtained were statistically analyzed.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> There was a high prevalence (16%) of thyroid disorders in patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus, most common was subclinical hypothyroidism (7.5%) which was further found to be more in females, elderly patients, patients with uncontrolled diabetes i.e. HbA<sub>1C</sub> values ≥7 or patients on insulin and patients with BMI &lt;30.</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Screening of thyroid dysfunction should be done in all diabetic patients especially in patients with poor diabetic control.</p>

Aim: The study was undertaken with an objective to know the thyroid functions in Type 2 diabetics and to know the spectrum of thyroid dysfunction in Type 2 DM. Methods: The present study included 68OPD and IPD patients of Type 2 DM who attended the Department of General Medicine at Dhaka Medical College Hospital Dhaka. Detailed history and examination were done, fasting blood samples of all the subjects were taken and at the same time samples were tested for HbA1C and thyroid profile (T3, T4 and TSH). Result: in this study 68 established diabetics were screened for thyroid disorders by TFT. Abnormal thyroid function was found in 43 T2DM cases and remaining diabetics had normal thyroid function. Among 68 cases low thyroid function was noted in 20 patients and 18 subjects had Sub-clinical hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism was noted in 05 patients. Conclusion: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major problem all over the world and many patients of Diabetes Mellitus are associated with thyroid dysfunction. Background: Diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorders are the most common endocrine disorders worldwide. Various studies have found that diabetes and thyroid disorders mutually influence each other and both disorders tend to coexist. So, we conducted a study to find out the prevalence of thyroid disorders in patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods: This study was conducted on 100 diabetic patients and 100 controls. All the participants were evaluated for thyroid dysfunctions by testing thyroid profile. The correlation of prevalence of thyroid disorder with age distribution, gender distribution, BMI, duration of diabetes and HbA1C was then done.Results: The prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions were high in diabetic patients compared to controls (29% versus 9%, P value <0.001). Most common thyroid disorder in diabetic patients was subclinical hypothyroidism (16%) while least common was hyperthyroidism (1%). The levels of serum T3 and T4 were significantly low while serum TSH levels were significantly high in diabetic group compared to control group. Prevalence of thyroid disorders in diabetics were significantly more in patients with age ≥ 50 years, more in females, more in patients with BMI ≥ 30 and more in patients with duration of diabetes ≥ 5 years. The association of prevalence of thyroid disorders with HBA1C was not significant.Conclusions:Current study showed high prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions in diabetic patients. We conclude that screening for thyroid dysfunction among patients with diabetes mellitus should be routinely performed, so as to recognize these dysfunctions early.

Background:. AUB is any abnormal uterine bleeding in the absence of any palpable pelvic pathology and demonstrable extra genital causes. AUB is responsible for 10% of gynaecological complaints.Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism leads to menstrual irregularities. Females with thyroid gland abnormality have chances of reproductive abnormalities ranging from abnormal sexual development, menstrual irregularities, infertility and premature menopause.The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of thyroid disorders in women with abnormal uterine bleeding and to assess the menstrul pattern in women with thyroid disorder Methods: The present study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital, Laheriasarai, Bihar. Total100 women of reproductive age group between 15-45 years women with abnormal bleeding were studied.Quantitative determination of T3, T4, and TSH by CLIAestimated in autoanlyser. Results: About 100 women participated in the study in which Most of the subjects belong to 26-30 years of age group(30%)followed by20-25 yrs(22%).13% in age group36-40.menorrhagia was the most common presenting symptom(66%)followed by oligomenorrhoea(21%) Thyroid disorders were prevalent in 22%.hypothyroid in 20%and hyperthyroidism in 2%.Majority had menorrhagia 66%followed by oligomenorrhea21%.among thyroid dysfunction 63.3%had menorrhagia and 36.36% had oligomenorrhea. Conclusions: So, biochemical evaluation of thyroid functioning should be made mandatory in all provisionally diagnosed cases of AUB to detect thyroid dysfunction.

Background: Aim was to study prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.Methods: The present study was a cross sectional observational study, which focused on cases of diabetes mellitus. Study was conducted in Departments of Medicine, SBKS MI & RC, a tertiary care centre for a period of 6 months. All the patients of T2DM were included. Total of 263 patients were enrolled which involved indoor, outpatient and diabetic clinic attending patients. A detailed history taking, clinical examination and relevant investigations (Hb%, Total count, platelet count, serum creatinine, FBS, PP2BS, HbA1C, S.TSH, F.T3 and F.T4). Appropriate statistical analytics were used and important correlations and conclusions were drawn.Results: A study of thyroid dysfunction (TD) in T2DM patients which included 263 diabetic patients, out of them 67 had thyroid dysfunction. Out of these 67 patients 43 were female and 24 were male. This suggests that female was more prone to thyroid dysfunction than males. Out of 67 TD patients, 42 were above the age of 50 year. So, as the age increases the prevalence of TD also increases thyroid dysfunction also depends on the glycaemic control of the patients. Out of 67 patients 22 patients had>8.0 HbA1C level. In our study we found that as the glycaemic control became poorer the prevalence of TD increase in hypothyroid but not in hyperthyroidism.Conclusions: Following conclusions were drawn from this study TD is more common in female than male, more after the age of 50 year, in T2DM patients. Hypothyroidism is more common with poor glycaemic control and long duration of T2DM patients. But for hyperthyroidism data which we evaluated was not significant and further conclusion bigger study is needed.

Screening for Tuberculosis in people with Diabetes and screening for Diabetes in people with Tuberculosis will allow earlier detection of co-morbidities, leading to better health outcomes. This study carried out in a tertiary care hospital in South India consisted of 500 Diabetic patients and 250 patients of Tuberculosis. In 250 Tuberculosis patients screened for DM, the overall prevalence of DM in TB patients was 24.8%,out of which 17.2 % already had Diabetes and 7.6% was the additional yield during screening. About 500 Diabetes cases screened for tuberculosis, 7.6% had symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis. On further evaluation of these subjects none of them revealed evidence for tuberculosis. There exists a bidirectional relationship between TB and diabetes, and they both impact the presentation of each other. This study highlights the need of routine screening for dysglycemia for all TB patients, especially at the time of diagnosis, similar to HIV screening.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disorder which involves multiple organ systems and leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Diabetes mellitus has been defined as “A metabolic syndrome characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and disturbance of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism associated with absolute or relative deficiency in insulin secretion and or insulin action”. Thyroid diseases are also a common endocrinopathy seen in the adult population. Thyroid hormones are intimately involved in cellular metabolism. The present work is a modest attempt to study the prevalence of thyroid disorders in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods: The study was carried out in total 108 diabetic patients without known thyroid disorder admitted in various Medical wards of R.N.T. Medical college and attached group of hospitals, Udaipur. It was a cross Sectional study done over a period of 10 months. Results: In the present study, 13% of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus had abnormal thyroid profile. Out of which the most common presentation was sub clinical hypothyroidism found in 9.25% followed by1.9% had overt hypothyroidism and 1.9% had sub clinical hyperthyroidism. In persons with abnormal thyroid profile 85.7% were females and 14.3% were males which was statistically significant.Conclusions: Prevalence of thyroid dysfunction is common among T2DM patients and is higher in females than in males. There is no significant correlation between thyroid dysfunction and age, diabetes control, family history, type of treatment and HbA1c level in diabetic patients.

Objective: The major theme of the research was to evaluate the frequency of diabetes mellitus patients with hepatitis C infection at tertiary care hospital of Sindh, Pakistan. Methodology: Descriptive cross sectional study was conducted at tertiary care hospital of Sindh, Pakistan for the period of 08 months; total 374 sample size was calculated by using Rao soft sample size calculator at the prevalence rate of 58.3% and confidence level 95% and margin of error 5%. Data was collected from patients of sero-positive HCV-RNA (Hepatitis C Virus-Ribose Nucleic Acid) visiting outpatient department or admitted at tertiary care hospital of Sindh, Pakistan and Informed consent form was also filled from all included subjects and data was analyzed by using SPSS software version 24.00. Results: From the 374 patients 209 were males and 165 females and all participants were divided in to various age groups as 15 patients were in the age group of 20-25 years, 67 patients were in 26-30 years, 48 patients included in 31-35 years and 109 patients were included in to age group of 36-40 years. Only 12 patients were included in the age group of 50 years and above. Total 164 (43.85%) were diabetic and 229 (61.22%) were diagnosed with Hepatitis C RNA (Ribose Nucleic Acid) positive. Patients had various range of HbA1c as 93 patients had range between 6-7mmol/dl. 107(28.60%) included in 7-9mmol/dl, 145(38.77%) included in 9-11mmol/dl and only 29 patients were having HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin) level above 11mmol/dl. Conclusion: It was concluded that there were increased number of diabetic patients with hepatitis C in worsening condition, so the proper programs should be conducted in order to reduce the complication of co-morbid disease.

<p class="abstract"><strong><span lang="EN-US">Background: </span></strong>The association between thyroid dysfunction and DM has long been recognized, although the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction among diabetes population varies in different studies. This study destined to know the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction of recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong><span lang="EN-US">Methods: </span></strong>Retrospective chart review of 60 patients with type 2 diabetes mellituswas done. Total 60 patients (male 51, female9) fulfillingdiagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus according to ADA (American Diabetes Association) criteria were analysed by doing Thyroid Function Test (FT4,TSH).</p><p class="abstract"><strong><span lang="EN-US">Results:</span></strong><span lang="EN-US"> 75% of patients have the biochemical features of thyroid dysfunction. Subcategorically in descending order of frequency they are - Subclinical hypothyroidism (33.33%) (defined by no symptoms or clinical fetures of hypothyroidism but biochemically TSH level in the range of above 5 mIU/ml but below 10 mIU/ml with normal FT4 level), 15% of patients each for overt hypothyroidism (either clinical features or Biochemically TSH &gt;10 mIU/ml or FT4 below normal), and subclinical hyperthyroidism (only biochemical low level of TSH &lt;0.34 mIU/ml in this study) and 11.667% patients show the features of clinical hyperthyroidism (clinical or FT4 level well above normal range along with low TSH).</span></p><p class="abstract"><strong><span lang="EN-US">Conclusions:</span></strong><span lang="EN-US"> Avery high prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in this part of world in contrast to Europe &amp; US suggest routine screening for thyroid disorder in recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus.</span></p>

Aim: to analyze the prevalence of glaucoma in type 2 diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: present observational study was undertaken in the Department of Ophthalmology, Patna Medical College and Hospital, Patna, Bihar, India for the period of one year. Total 100 patients of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus were included and detailed history was obtained. Results: Out of 100 diabetic patients 8 (8%) of them had glaucoma. Out of 8 diabetic patients with glaucoma 75.0% were male. The mean age reported was 58.16±4.81. Conclusion: This study highlights the prevalence and the demographic characteristics of glaucoma among diabetes mellitus patients in a tertiary care hospital of Bihar.
