The use of information and communication technology greatly improved foreign languages teaching and learning. Learning management systems, such as Moodle, used to create and deliver courses, facilitate e-learning in different types of educational institutions. Blended learning as a combination of face-to face and e-learning is conducive to deep learning. We designed a new course “Teaching English as a foreign language to learners with special educational needs” to provide students enrolled in a master’s programme – pre-service English teachers, with an opportunity to enhance their language and professional skills as well as to develop their learner autonomy through meaningful learning experiences blending learning can supplement. We considered micro, meso and macro levels of the course implementation and functioning. In this paper we describe the context in which the course is introduced by providing information about the setting, the curriculum, the need for including this course in the master’s programme at the faculty of foreign languages. We also outline the way the course is designed, including its structure, particular tasks and assessment procedures and present students’ feedback about the impact of the course on their foreign language skills and learner autonomy. The results indicate that blended learning is an effective tool for development of pre-service teachers’ English language skills and learner autonomy. The findings of the study can be applied by faculty and administrators involved in the design of courses at tertiary level.

The objective of this chapter is to determine participants' perceptions about the characteristics that students must have to be successful in a blended learning environment. The authors adopted a qualitative approach in which 91 learners participated. Data collection was carried out through guided interviews over three months. The results of the research emphasized the need to have a good level of English and new digital skills as essential requirements to study an English degree in a blended learning modality. Participants were strongly aware of the necessity to master synchronous and asynchronous technological tools to communicate online with their virtual classmates, and to do assessment and self-assessment e-activities. Learners also considered that it was essential to be mature enough to be able to reflect and evaluate their own learning. Results showed that students must be organised and tenacious, and must have the ability to innovate and collaborate inside the created e-learning community.

Abstract Arabic is the language of the Islamic ummah, a language that has spread throughout the world, including Indonesia, which has a diversity of ethnicities, cultures and languages. However, the diversity of languages in the archipelago does not cover the languages that have entered from abroad, including Arabic. Even the Indonesian language has adopted many of the Arabic language. Then, with the increasing number of homeland enthusiasts using Arabic, it automatically requires teachers who are competent in the field of Arabic. The Arabic language teaching system in Indonesia in general, from the past until now, many educational institutions, especially Islamic boarding schools, use the same methods and skills, not developed. One of the methods used is the al-qawāid wa al-tajamah method. The drawback of this method is that it does not pay attention to the four Arabic language skills, namely istima '(listening), kalam (speaking), qirāah (reading), and kitābah (writing). This method hones a lot of reading skills only. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to write about this problem by examining the application of Arabic language skills sourced from the Arabic language learning guide book for non-native speakers (non-Arabic), namely kitāb al-Idhāāt by 'Abdurrahman al-Fauzan. The form of this research is the study of literature (books) which are qualitative in nature, in this research method using the library research method (literature study) whose main source (primary) is Kitāb al-Idhāāt which focuses on the application of Arabic language skills for non Arabic ('ajam). The author hopes that with the realization of this research, Arabic language teachers in the archipelago will be able to apply the four Arabic language skills, namely istima '(listening), kalam (speaking), qirāah (reading), and kitābah (writing) skills maximally.

Abstract Background The availability and popularity of laptops, tablet PCs and smartphones in private and work environments offers considerable potential for reasonably integrating blended learning formats into structured medical learning environments. The promising educational principle of the flipped classroom (FC) provides the opportunity to effectively combine e-learning and face-to-face teaching within a single framework. However, similar to most blended learning formats, the FC requires a solid groundwork of structured digitized learning content. As rearranging a whole curriculum is intense and time consuming, physicians occupied simultaneously in clinical practice and teaching may be confronted with a lack of time during this process. Methods We developed two straightforward approaches to transforming a pre-existing, lecture-based otolaryngology curriculum into interactive videos within a Moodle learning management system. Special attention was given to reducing individual working time for medical professionals. Thus, while one approach was mainly guided by a medical professional to control the content-related quality of video processing, we investigated an alternative approach outsourcing work to a technician. Afterwards, the working time was analysed and compared. The resulting videos were revised with the H5P plugin for moodle to adjust the content where necessary. Results We identified a fast-track approach for creating structured e-learning content suitable for flipped-classroom-based lectures, other blended learning formats, or even providing a whole curriculum online. The alternative approach significantly reduced working time for medical professionals but did not impair the content-related quality significantly. Conclusions The use of H5P interactive tools via Moodle LMS provides a major procedural benefit by allowing the easy adjustment of pre-existing video material into suitable online content. Reasonably outsourcing work to technicians can significantly reduce the working time of medical professionals without decreasing the quality of learning content. The presented workflow can be used as a flexible approach for flipped classroom frameworks or other blended learning strategies where interactive videos are applicable.
