The Library Quarterly, 89(1), 53–66. https://doi.org/10.1086/700663 Abstract Objective – To determine the extent to which embedded librarianship is understood and implemented with a focus on service models, best practices, and barriers. Design – Survey questionnaire with follow up interviews. Setting – Provincial and ministerial university libraries in China. Subjects – Subject or liaison librarians from the 84 institutions with science and technology “information searching and evaluation centres” called S&TNS (p. 56). Methods – The authors identified potential participants through the eligible institutions’ library websites or by contacting the library’s managers. Then they randomly selected three librarians (n = 252) from each library to be invited to participate. 56 responded from 41 unique institutions. When respondents indicated that their library had embedded library services, the authors contacted them for follow up interviews. Main results – Results of the questionnaire revealed that most respondents were unclear about the concept of embedded librarianship with many mistaking traditional models of librarianship as embedded. Roughly half (n = 21) of respondents reported embedded librarians at their institution. Follow up interviews revealed five models of embeddedness: (1) subject librarianship, (2) teaching information retrieval or library orientation sessions, (3) participation in research teams, (4) co-location with academic departments, and (5) assisting university administration with decision-making. Only half of these libraries (n = 11) conducted some form of assessment. Conclusion – Embedded librarianship is a promising, but not yet widely adopted model in Chinese university libraries. More should be done to advocate for its implementation or libraries risk obsolescence.

AbstractThis paper, which is largely based on the findings of my doctoral study, investigated the contribution of effective library and information services to academic achievements at universities in Ghana. The main objective of this study was to assess and explore the effectiveness of library and information services and establish its contribution to efficient academic work. The researchers adopted a mixed methods approach in which both qualitative and quantitative research approaches are used in a single study. This study used a survey research design because of the large and wide-spread population involved. The results of the study established that there is a correlation between effective library and information services and academic achievements at the universities in Ghana. The study also establish that library users were generally satisfied with the services provided by the university libraries and the provision of study space, book lending and Internet services turn out to be the most effective and highly patronized services. The findings on the challenges facing the delivery of effective library and information services clearly indicate that inadequate staff training programmes were affecting the ability of library staff to deliver effective library services. Finally, this paper has made recommendations on how to improve upon the effectiveness of library and information services to enhance academic work at universities in Ghana.

This case study presents data generated from Miami University Libraries’ participation in LibQUAL+™ 2000‐2001, a national service quality survey for libraries. Miami’s data are analyzed through a series of questions to identify client service needs, evaluate current service levels, and place local results within the broader context of aggregate scores and score norms from all participating institutions. Finally, questions are raised about the extent of LibQUAL+™’s relevance both for libraries that are not members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and for organizational planning beyond traditional library services.

This study investigated the relationship between library services and the availability of information resources in federal university libraries, in South-South, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, two research questions were raised and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 16620 students and a sample of 800 respondents was selected for the study. The selection was done through the stratified and purposive random sampling technique. The results of the analyses revealed a significant relationship between user education and preservation of information resources and availability of information resources. Based on these findings, it was recommended, among others that: User education should be adequately given to students to enable them to make the most use of the information resources and Government should prioritize funding for the preservation of information resources for university libraries.

For centuries, the library has embodied one of the greatest intellectual achievements of mankind. Determining the horizon of university research libraries and librarianship, as a rule, is considered in the perspective of their institutional development. The article considers the problems of library business in the conditions of formation of information society in Ukraine. The analysis of the scientific and information base of the research reveals that the leading topics in the scientific literature are the issues of material and technical support of libraries, financing of the library industry, introduction of innovative management in library services, training of library specialists. The general conclusion of this investigation is as follows: the problems of development of university libraries are a mirror of the problems of information progress of Ukrainian society and education in Ukraine.

Comics and cartoons are valued in twenty-first century popular culture and are increasingly used as ‘Applied Comics’ to help communicate key messages and information in society. However, there is less evidence of cartoons and comics being used to communicate with and engage library users in learning, information literacy (IL) and research support. This paper explores case studies of how several different projects have utilised comics as a medium to deliver key messages about library services to support teaching and research at Cambridge University Libraries. The paper examines the use of comics and cartoons in a library context framed in a theory of comics and visual learning. The reception and output of the comics and cartoons with different audiences at Cambridge University Libraries is explored and the paper proposes that further research could be done to examine the potential of comics in communication and IL.

The author systematize history of Russian university libraries, analyze their progressing in digital environment, and discuss new possibilities for modernizing education and academic libraries, in particular. The laws and regulations for university libraries are reviewed; their functions and services are specified. As a result of global information processes intensive growth, the demand for elibraries and their services have been increasing. The students of Cherepovets State University were surveyed on the issues of library service efficiency. The survey proved the significance and relevance of library services for the students; the strengths and weaknesses of library services were identified. The authors emphasize the need for intensifying marketing component in library activities and promotion of its services, and for studying target audience demands. The prospects for academic libraries are also discussed.

Spanish university libraries have had to adapt their services to the virtual environment after the classroom-based teaching lockdown in March 2020 due to Covid-19. Given the possibility of a greater virtual dimension of learning and teaching during the next academic year, these library services should be improved. This paper analyzes how university libraries are strengthening their support for online learning and are progressively being integrated into the virtual campus, as well as the actions that are necessary to enhance these services and the main difficulties perceived by their librarians. For this purpose, a sample of professionals from university libraries was interviewed, and the research literature on this subject was also reviewed to identify the main international experiences that can be considered as benchmarks for improving virtual library services. Both the research literature and the librarians interviewed agree on two aspects: the need to increase collaboration with other university departments and the wide scope for improvement in the integration of the library into online learning, which is currently limited. Resumen Las bibliotecas universitarias españolas se han visto obligadas a adaptar sus servicios al entorno virtual tras el cierre de las aulas en marzo de 2020 con motivo del estado de alarma decretado a causa de la Covid-19. Ante la perspectiva de un nuevo curso con un mayor componente digital en la docencia, estos servicios necesitarán fortalecerse. En este artículo se analiza qué acciones están desarrollando las bibliotecas universitarias para reforzar el apoyo a la enseñanza online y su integración en el campus virtual, así como las posibles mejoras y limitaciones que encuentran. Para ello se ha consultado a una selección de profesionales de bibliotecas universitarias y se ha revisado además la bibliografía en busca de experiencias en otros países que puedan servir como referente. Tanto la bibliografía como las personas consultadas coinciden en dos aspectos: la necesidad de colaboración con otros departamentos de la universidad y el amplio margen de mejora posible en la integración de la biblioteca en la enseñanza online, que en la actualidad es escasa.

Ghana has a large and complex higher learning educational system, with an increasing enrolment each year. Given the global significance of the Sustainable Development Goals, this study aims to assess the roles of Ghanaian university libraries in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4. The study applied a qualitative research approach to examine the strategies deployed by libraries in Ghana and the purposive sampling technique was used to select interviewees. The findings indicate that university libraries in Ghana are at the forefront of providing information and library services to support capacity building. These libraries have ensured inclusiveness to quality education by providing equitable library services, information access, and unbiased information services to all clients without discrimination. The study identified poor public perceptions of these libraries, inadequate funding, and emerging technologies as challenges facing libraries in Ghana. It was revealed that the areas in which information and library services have contributed to Sustainable Development Goal 4 in Ghana are (1) teaching and learning, (2) cooperation and collaboration among stakeholders, (3) promoting sustainable information practices among stakeholders, and (4) information in specific (specialised) contexts. The study concludes that university libraries in Ghana have created an enabling environment, making them increasingly relevant to national and global development. Strategies deployed by these libraries towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 include creating awareness, conducting cutting-edge research, sustaining lifelong learning and quality education, and providing high quality teaching and learning.

Integration of information and communication technology platforms is one of the incentives for the development of Digital Humanities (DH) projects abroad in their increasingly close interaction with academic, primarily University libraries. The purpose of the article is to analyze the deepening interaction of libraries with DH projects within the single digital paradigm, as well as to analyze new services for project management, data curation, organization of online publications, preservation and exchange of databases, etc. In the era of digital convergence, large scientific libraries abroad are actively developing new models of cooperation with DH projects, forming special service packages for continuous servicing of scientists on the basis of the integrated approach.The article discusses the new concept of library services for DH projects, draws attention to the problem of classification and ranking of library services in order to streamline the work and improve its efficiency, describes the existing multi-level service models developed in the library systems of the major US Universities. In the context of formation of the new package of library services within the framework of DH projects, the article considers the new practices and operational models on which they are based. The author describes the experience of University libraries in the Netherlands and Canada. Under the innovation pressure in the field of library technologies, the service package offered by scientific libraries in developed countries is constantly expanding and modernizing. It includes not only digitization of printed materials, computer assistance, but also management of databases, preservation and exchange of scientific data, organization of digital publications, consultations in the field of copyright protection, etc. Development of new practices in the field of digital services management changes the organizational paradigm of library work, puts forward new standards of professional activity, which require continuous training to meet, i.e. launches an institutional rebranding of the library.
