Mangrove crabs (Scylla serrata) is one of fishery commodities with high economic value for its good taste and nutrients content. Currently, increasing demand for this Crustacean species caused declining its population and for this reason, cultures of brooding crabs have been attempted. This study was carried out to investigate the egg development of mangrove crabs, with the main focus to study the effects of food types and habitats on the value of female maturity index (FMI) and gonado-somatic index (GSI). To investigate the effects of habitats, experiments were carrried out in the two habitats namely tidal flow of pond area and mangrove area. The spawning crabs were reared in a bamboo cage with the size of 2x1,5x1m3 divided into three paralel partition for 9-12 crabs with body weight of 200-250 grams. The crabs in the three partition were fed with three different foods, namely fish for the first partition, squid for the second, and mussel for the third. The results showed that no significant effect of foods and habitats was observed on the value of FMI. However, squid and mangrove habitats affected the growth, such as: an increase the wide of fifth abdomen segment, the widest abdomen segment and body weight during egg development periods. On the other hand, no significant different value of GSI was found on different habitats, but the food types affected the value of GSI.

Keywords : mangrove crabs, FMI, GSI, egg production

Mangrove forests are ecosystems that make up coastal areas and river estuaries. The examples of mangrove ecosystems found in Indonesia are in Segara Anakan, Central Java. One of the aquatic biota with the economic value found in the mangrove forest ecosystem is the mud crab (Scylla spp.). The purpose of this study was to assess the distribution of mangrove crabs (Scylla spp.) to the presence of mangrove species in the mouth of the Donan River, Segara Anakan. A sampling of crabs and observations of mangrove vegetation were carried out at five stations spread from the river to the sea. The results showed that there were three types of mangrove crabs caught in the vicinity of the study, namely Scylla tranquebarica, S. olivacea, and S. serrata. The types of mangroves found include Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Avicennia rumphiana, A. alba, A. officinalis, and Nypa. Regression analysis showed that mangrove density correlated with the abundance of Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla olivacea, but contradicts the abundance of Scylla serrate. PCA analysis showed that the Crab species Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla olivacea were associated with mangroves of Avicennia alba, Avicennia rumphiana, and Rhizophora apiculata. Meanwhile, Scylla serrata crabs are associated with Avicennia officinalis.

Mangrove crabs (Scylla serrata Forsskål, 1775) is one of the biological resources of the sea, that is used as raw material for soft shell crab production. This organism have economically important value and has been widely cultivated by traditional farmers to meet food needs in both the local and export markets. Assigned KepMen No 1 Tahun 2015 made more mangrove crab culturer and exporter were loss in bussines because the producing soft shell crab was not apropriate with the gorverment regulation. Therefore to solve this problem was importantly done the approach through the research about the change of morphometric of mangrove crab before and after moulting. This research was aimed to know the correlation between carapace length, carapace wide and weight of mangrove crab before and after moulting thats reared in the environment culture of brackishwaterpond area in Mojo Village, Ulujami District, Pemalang Regency. This research used mangrove crab (S. serrata Forsskål, 1775), the body weight size of 80-150 g, individually kept in plastic boxes (30 x 20 x 25 cm), 15 pieces per m2 density. Research was carried out using case study method. The research parameters were aimed on the meassuring of the mangrove crab morphometric before and after moulting, such as: carapace length, carapace wide and body weight. Morphometric parameters of mangrove crab body, include the rellation of carapace lenght and body weight, carapace wide and body weight, carapace lenght and carapace wide were analyzed with regression metode (Sudjana, 1982). Carapace length, carapace wide and body weight before moulting one anothers showed a regression of linier positive model. The same correlation model were showed on the correlation between carapace lenght, carapace wide and body weight of mangrove crab before moulting with the addition of carapace length, carapace wide and body weight of mangrove crab after moulting, each following order, are: 12,26 % ± SD 5,57 %, 13, 65 % ± SD 3,59 %, 23,46 % ± SD 10,934 %. This parameter could be used as defining parameter to choose the size of mangrove crab as raw material for soft shell crab production that appropriate to the goverment regulation.

Three hundred laying hens of two commercial and one experimental crossbreed were evaluated in Peruvian Andes. The Commercial crossbreeds were Babcock Brown and Improved Creole ISAMISA (CM), and local experimental crossbreed (CE). The experimental crossbreed was obtained from Naked Neck Creole Hens, legs feather Creole Hens and Babcock Brown (BB) commercial layer. The females were reared to 52 wk. of age, and recorded data included body weight, feed intake, egg number, and egg weight, allowing the calculation of egg mass and feed conversion ratio. The economic value of each crossbreed was determined by overall egg production and body weight at 52-wk old. The highest laying rate was exhibited by Babcock (76.9%) and CE (58.9%), followed by CM (53.1%). The crossbreeds differed in feed intake and in females’ feed conversion, with BB leading (2.55) followed by CE (3.49) and CM (4.32). In egg production, BB were the best, as expected from specialized tableegg crossbreeds. In summary, BB was the best egg-producing crossbreed, but poor in meat production. Better choice for dual-purpose production would be CE, ranked second in egg production. CM was the best meat-producing crossbreed and were second in egg-mass production. Hence, CE might be the best dual-purpose hybrid with better feed efficiency than CM and the consumers prefer large eggs and birds.

Kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata) memiliki nilai ekonomis tinggi. Mud crabs (Scylla serrata) are known to have a high economic value. The increasing demand of mud crabs for consumption rxcequires higher production. Therefore, mud crabs need to be cultivated intensively. One of the methods to improve the values of mud crabs’ aquaculture is by producing soft-shell crabs. Soft-shell crabs are produced during molting phase in which the crab shed it’s exoskeleton in order to grow. In the fisheries industry, the soft-shell crabs are considered to be more valuable as it can be consumed as a whole. Accelerating the production of molting crabs, requires stimulus. One of the methods is mutilation. The aim of this study is to estimate the periods required for molting under different treatments, as well as calculating the increase of total weight of molting crabs.. The method used was an experimental method which contained four treatments. The treatments are mutilation of walking legs and claws, all of walking legs, claws, and no mutilation. The number of crabs used was 40 with 10 replications per treatment. The data obtained in the period of molting and the increase of total weight of the mud crabs were analyzed using ANOVA. The result shows that mutilation affects the period of crab’s molting in which the fastest molting (13 days on average) occurred after mutilation of walking legs and claws. This mutilation method does not influence the increase of total weight and the highest value is showed in non-treated group with the increase of 53,30 grams in weight.

Dwarf broiler breeders in single-bird cages (DC), in floor pens (DF) and normal broiler breeders in floor pens (NF) were compared for their own and their offspring’s performance. No differences were observed in rate of egg production at 147–329 days of age between the NF and DF birds (48 vs. 47%) whereas the DC birds laid at the rate of 40%. Hen-housed egg numbers for the same period followed the same general pattern (NF, 81; DF, 82; DC, 70 eggs/bird). DF and DC birds consumed less feed per dozen eggs than the NF birds (3.4 vs. 4.3 kg/doz). Egg weights in the early part of the production cycle were not significantly different among the groups but at 294 days of age the normal birds laid larger eggs than the dwarfs (65 vs. 62 g). Dwarfs in cages reached 50% production earlier than the DF or NF birds. Female offspring from the three groups grew at the same rate and weighed 1.7 kg at 56 days of age but there were significant differences in feed conversion (NF, 2.46; DF, 2.43; DC, 2.53 kg/kg body weight produced). Male offspring had small but not statistically significant differences in body weight at 56 days (NF, 2.16; DF, 2.12; DC, 2.09 kg) or feed conversion (NF, 2.30; DF, 2.29; DC, 2.34 kg/kg body weight). Mortality in the offspring ranged from 2.7 to 9.2% but did not differ significantly. Income over feed costs per broiler started did not differ from the three groups regardless of the meat price – feed price combination considered. However, when profit was computed on a breeder hen basis, the DF females were more profitable than either the NF or DC females.

Pullets were brought into production on a low-protein corn, soybean meal diet to which various nutrients including essential amino acids, choline, corn oil and feathermeal were supplemented. Production commenced between 18 and 20 wk of age and up to at least 60% production, hens fed the low protein diets (10% CP) produced at least as many eggs and as great an egg mass as these given a 17% protein corn, soybean meal control diet. Pullets fed the corn, soybean meal test diets, peaked at around 80% as compared to slightly over 90% for the control. Egg production immediately fell for birds fed the test diets to around 70% for most of the test treatments. Body weight remained constant or fell after peak production for birds fed the test diets as compared to a normal increase for birds on the control diet. Egg size increased for the test diets at a rate which was comparable to that of the control birds. In a second experiment, with older hens, supplementation of the 10% protein test diet with methionine, lysine, arginine and tryptophan, resulted in intakes of these amino acids which met NRC minimum requirement levels. However, egg mass output was reduced approximately 11% compared to the 17% protein control diet. While intakes of several essential amino acids fell below requirement levels, the degree that valine was calculated to be deficient in both experiments corresponded closely with the reduction in egg mass output of hens fed the test as compared to the control diet. Key words: Lysine, methionine, egg weight, body weight, hens.
