This study describes the power and knowledge and the relationship between the two of the puppeteers of the mask puppet show in Malang district. This qualitative research used interviews and observation to collect data, which were then analysed using the Foucault’s genealogical method. The results showed that the puppeteers of the mask puppet show in Malang have a more substantial knowledge orientation than other puppeteers. The puppeteers have obtained their power–knowledge by disciplining their bodies for several years, built from its social and environmental existence. The role of a puppeteer requires a person to not only have spiritual strength but also a vision of directing and organising the show. The puppeteer’s power-knowledge produces discourse that has autonomy and power. Keywords: power-knowledge, power relationship, puppeteer

This article examines current transformations of the writing profession in France. Based on qualitative research (interviews with writers and their representatives, as well as organisers of literary events) and on a national survey conducted in 2016 by the Centre national du livre, it emphasises the tension between symbolic and professional recognition at different moments of a writer’s ‘career’. In a country where literary agents are only now starting to organise, and where creative writing courses are not as well established as elsewhere, publishers still play the key role of ‘gatekeepers’ into the literary field. The relationship with the publisher is thus crucial and is based on elective affinities. Yet, once published, an author still needs to be distinguished and recognised. Apart from the traditional literary prizes, which give symbolic and professional recognition, literary events (festivals, public readings) and residencies offer new career opportunities. These related activities, or ‘activités connexes’ have significantly increased in number: the article focuses especially on analysing how they now fit into and structure the literary careers of authors, as well as how authors themselves perceive them.

This research is a qualitative research. The aim is finding out the role of reason in understanding laduni knowledge. In this case laduni knowledge is the same as intuition. The relationship of reason and intuition which is essentially always in an interactive condition, first seeing the types of knowledge that can be captured by humans. According to al-Ghazali there are four kinds of levels of existence (being). First. The metaphysical form, according to him, is summarized in the Mahfudh letter. Second, empirical forms in the concrete world (alam syahadah). Third, imaginary (imaginative), and fourth, rational form (al-ma’qulat). The relationship of reason and intuition, al-Ghazali made a parable of people who gained knowledge with reason likened to a child and those who obtained knowledge with intuition were likened to (al-mumayyiz). The parable above implies the existence of a level between the two and does not mean there is a separation between each. If this is related to the theory of the human ratio (al- nafs al-natiqoh) after being able to capture a priori or dharuriyyat knowledge, in turn it shows two abilities, namely, the ability to produce knowledge through understanding (through) feeling . The first is creative-methodical-systematic, while the second is creative-non-systematic-systematic. Thus, it is clear that the nature of both knowledge comes from the same source as the derivative of the soul and therefore both are contained in human intellectuality.

Geography and tourism: paths and challenges for a complex reading of patrimony at Garopaba (SC, Brazil) ABSTRACT The text presents a research about the relationship between tourism and geography, considering the role of teaching of geography in the reading of local patrimony. Placed in Garopaba, a town in the coast of Santa Catarina (Brazil), it aims at discovering, temporarily, the importance of the teaching of geography in the construction of the touristic space. For a better comprehension, we have used concepts from geography as well as from the social representation involved in the reading of landscape and the construction of the place. The method used was the complexity one. Through qualitative research, we have done narrated episodic interviews with tourists, locals and geography teachers, and made field observation. We have realized that the teaching of geography is important to the reading of patrimony as it allows a critical view over pre-established forms, helping to go beyond the uncommitted rational discourses of touristic places, as well as to discover the pre-conceptions that are sold about touristic spots. The teaching of high-quality geography, one that analyses landscape through its genesis, facilitates valuable readings of material and immaterial patrimonies that are found in different places. Objective: to identify the most relevant incentives available to agtechs - also known as agritechs or agrotechs; the challenges they face to reach the scalability phase; and the relationship of these challenges with possible limitations of the local innovation ecosystem. Methodology/approach: the data were collected through qualitative research and examined using the content analysis technique. Main results: (1) the entrepreneurs of the interviewed Agtechs identified different market demands and opportunities; (2) the agtechs relied mainly on support, through incubation and mentoring; (3) these nascent companies had greater difficulty in the prototyping stage, in the identification of resource sources, and the formation of a team, which indicates the need to expand support and offer ecosystem solutions in this direction, as well as to facilitate the access to investors; and (4) the Espírito Santo’s innovation ecosystem still presents a series of challenges so that it can fully fulfill the role of encouraging, in a structured way, startups called agtechs. Theoretical/methodological contributions: the results obtained demonstrate the need for an entrepreneurial ecosystem to foster the development of agtechs and reflect the main difficulties faced by entrepreneurs of these nascent companies in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. Relevance/originality: the issues involved in the study comprise themes of central interest for a deeper understanding of the applied dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems and Agtechs in the context of the Espírito Santo.

This article theorises the role of educational agents in democratic education in urban contexts by engaging in the discussion about the relationship between citizenship, democracy and education. Therefore, we confront Gert Biesta’s conceptualisation of a ‘pedagogy of interruption’ with the empirical insights that emerge from a qualitative research project on democratic education in a particular urban context in Ghent (Belgium). We elaborate on the historical developments and origins of the educational practices and interventions in this urban context and reveal three contemporary educational strategies that coincide and complement each other while implementing the democratic ideal of equality in differentiated ways: integration, activation and instigation. Our analysis enables us to reflect on the complexities, ambiguities and dilemmas at stake when educational agents shape a ‘pedagogy of interruption’. This pedagogy entails the constant search to balance the multidimensional purposes of democratic education, that is, between socialisation and subjectification.

Purpose This contribution investigates methodological questions concerning Change Laboratory interventions. It contemplates the research questions: To what extent the Change Laboratory can be situated within the panorama of qualitative inquiry? If so, to what extent can the methods and strategies of inquiry help improve a Change Laboratory intervention? Design/methodology/approach To answer the first question, this paper makes an overview on key terms of qualitative research; subsequently, it presents the characterising features of the Change Laboratory. Then, it takes a historical perspective and compares the Change Laboratory firstly against action research, and secondly with design experiments. To answer the second section, it examines a case study of Change Laboratory with teachers that the first author facilitated. Next, it displays how trustworthiness was ensured through a thick description and member checks. Findings The paper argues that the Change Laboratory is a strategy of inquiry; it aligns with the characteristics of qualitative research, and it follows the agenda of a participative paradigm. Furthermore, the methods and strategies of inquiry such as thick descriptions and member checks, not only can improve rigour and validity of the intervention but also strengthen the outcomes of the Change Laboratory itself. Originality/value The Change Laboratory is well defined as a formative method, but not fully understood as an investigative method. Although scholars discussed methodological issues of Cultural Historical Activity Theory in diverse articles, the relationship between the Change Laboratory and qualitative inquiry has remained unclear.

AbstractHow can gift and gift-giving studies be relevant to the study of institutions and vice versa? This is the question we broadly address in the introduction to this symposium while drawing on the contributing articles and sketching out a possible future research in a perspective of integration between these two fields of study. Is the gift an institution? What types of methodological approaches would be most suitable in view of such integration? We define the gift as transfers underpinned by institutions, including customs and norms. We contend that the institutional thought can employ empirical and qualitative research methods used by anthropology and that there are important and fruitful lines of tension between gift-giving and institutions – from the relationship between freedom and obligation to the role of third sector between state and market – worthy of further research in the future.

Abstract The actions of subversion in Peru and the role of the Armed Forces to combat them based on the French anti-subversive school developed in a context of absence from the State in the most impoverished areas, where each side disputed to win over the population. The objective of this article is to delve into the origins, training and French military influence of the Peruvian counterintelligence and understand its actions in that context. Through a qualitative research, based on a historical approach, we seek to understand the actions of the Peruvian counterintelligence and establish the origins and evolution of subversion in the country -directed at gaining the population to promote terrorism- as well as how this was embodied in the original counterintelligence doctrine. A fundamental part of this investigation is the data regarding counterintelligence contained in the Final Report of the Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación. The conclusions point out the relationship between the subversive origins, the doctrine and the excuses of terrorism, by Walzer. The study is an important support for further investigations.
