This paper presents a study of traditional netting materials subjected to disinfecting chemicals during fish farming and treatment of net cages. A series of tests were performed in order to study the effect of various concentrations of disinfecting chemicals on the tensile strength of Raschel knitted Nylon netting materials. Simulated spill of diluted hydrogen peroxide (HP) to the jump fence during de-lousing did not affect the strength of the applied new and used knotless nylon netting samples. Hydrogen peroxide reacted with biofouling forming gas bubbles, but this did not result in reduced netting strength. The performed tests did not indicate any effect on netting strength from a simulated single, traditional bath disinfection as performed at service stations applying the disinfectant Aqua Des (AD) containing peracetic acid (PAA). However, increasing the AD concentration from 1 to 10% resulted in a strength reduction of 3–6%. Simulated spill of concentrated AD on the jump fence of a net with copper coating residuals resulted in a severe reduction in strength of 45%. This strength loss was probably a consequence of chemical reaction between copper and Aqua Des, and uncoated netting did not experience any loss in strength subjected to the same chemical exposure. These findings from application of AD should also apply to other PAA disinfection chemicals with trade names as, for example, Perfectoxid and Addi Aqua.

The purpose of this study was to analysis and identify the impacts of striped snakehead (Channa striata Bloch) fish farming in net cages on socio economic and environmental aspects. This study was a survey research. Location determination in Bangkau Village, Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency, South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia was done purposively because this area was a center for cultivating striped snakeheads in Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency. The collection of respondent data in this village was carried out in a census of 20 people from the whole population of cultivated striped snakeheads in net cages. The effect on social was done by identifying the effect of social aspect, the economic aspect determined by analysis used was the calculation of profit (π) and payback period (PP), while the environmental aspects, it was done by identifying the measurement of water quality. The results showed that from the social aspect, this business influenced the use of labor in its business, benefits obtained from the business of cultivating this striped snakeheads varied between 627,433.33 IDR to 9,789,533.33 IDR per year, while the payback period was 2.23 years. This cultivation effort from the environmental aspects of water quality is still within the class 3 water quality classification tolerance limit.

<strong>Growth Rate of Humpback Grouper Cromileptes altivelis Cultured in Floating Net Cages.</strong> Humpback Grouper <em>Cromileptes altivelis</em> fish farming has good opportunities in the future, although still experiencing problems in its cultivation. One of the parameters that needs to be considered is the stocking density associated with the cage area. The purpose of this study was to determine the appropriate stocking density to generate optimum growth of Humpback Grouper cultivated in floating net cages. The study was conducted using the experimental method with 3 treatments and 3 replications. There were 9 cages used with the size of 1 x 1 x 1.5 m3 and a mesh size of 0.5 inches. The study was conducted in the waters of Banda Neira, Maluku, with the condition of the waters during the experiment, such as salinity which ranged from 33.2 to 34.6‰, water temperature ranged from 25 to 31°C, pH ranged from 7 to7.5, current speed 0.32–3.97cm/s, and water clarity was 14.29 to 20 m. The feed was trash fish given twice a day, in the morning and afternoon as much as 10% of total body weight of fish. After 4 months of cultivation, the absolute growth was best demonstrated by the treatment with stocking density of 25 fish/cage, which was 18.22 g, while the lowest (13.25 g) was shown by the treatment with stocking density of 75 fish/cage. The specific growth rate in the treatment of 25 fish/cage reached 1.34%/day, while the treatment of 50 fish/cage and 75 fish/cage reached 1.18%/day and 0.97%/day respectively.<br /><br /><br />

Lake Toba area has been designated a National Strategic Area, which is a priority spatial planning area. The Simanindo Area is a sub-district in Samosir Regency which is an island in the middle of Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Lake Toba's current condition has been polluted by organic contamination and high free chlorine. In addition, the existence of fish farming activities or floating net cages that contribute to the contamination of phosphorus by 0.78 mg/l and free chlorine by 0.84 mg/l into Lake Toba which resulted in the need for studies on the carrying capacity and environmental capacity. Land carrying capacity can be calculated by comparing the availability of land with land requirements. While the carrying capacity of water can be calculated by comparing the availability of water with water requirements or using the Thornwaite Mather Water Balance method. Land Capacity can be calculated by the Land Endurance Unit. While the Capacity of Waters can be calculated by STORET analysis or calculation of domestic waste pollution load. The existence of a massive development plan for Simanindo area and rapid population growth is projected to cause the Land Support Capacity of the Simanindo Priority Zone to be conditionally safe in 2040. Water Carrying Capacity experienced a deficit in the atmosphere in July after being calculated with the Thornwaite Mather Water Balance. In addition, the Capacity of Water Bodies is also in the Status of Severe Pollution according to the STORET Method.

AIM: This study assessed the phycoperiphyton biomass in two regions submitted to different human impacts on Juara Lake, a coastal ecosystem with multiple uses, to order to test the hypothesis that the sampling sites that receive domestic sewage shows higher biomass values. METHODS: It was installed three experimental structures with artificial substrate (glass slides) in December 2009 in two sampling sites: ED - near the domestic sewage's release; TR - in the area of intensive fish farming (net cages). Samplings were conducted in each experimental structure, after 21, 26 and 31 days for colonization. We evaluated: transparency, electric conductivity, pH, turbidity, total suspended solids, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, orthophosphate and silicate. The phycoperiphyton was analyzed regarding biomass: biovolume (total and per class); pigments (chlorophyll-a and b and carotenoids) and phaeophytin; dry weight and ash-free dry weight. RESULTS: TR featured higher values of transparency, water temperature and silicate. ED presented greater values of conductivity, turbidity, total suspended solids, alkalinity, total nitrogen, nitrate, ammonia nitrogen, and orthophosphate. No difference was detected between the sites and the succession of days for the dry weight, ash-free dry weight, chlorophyll-b, carotenoids, phaeopigments, and total biovolume. CONCLUSIONS: Nevertheless, the biovolume of Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae were more representative in ED. Only the higher values of chlorophyll confirmed the hypothesis tested.

Abstract. Darma Reservoir functions as a reservoir for irrigation, fisheries, and recreational and sports facilities. Currently, it only functions for irrigation and fish farming by floating net ponds. The development of floating net frameworks was so rapid that it conflicted with reservoir management. This study aims to determine the density of the floating net framework of the sedimentation conditions of the Darma Reservoir and to determine the development of the sedimentation rate of the Darma Reservoir in relation to the service life of the reservoir characterized by reduced dead storage. The first step was carried out by surveying the presence of the number of floating net cages, the distribution of the feed, the percentage of feed demand, the carrying capacity of the reservoir, then a topographic survey of the depth of the Darma reservoir to determine the capacity, rate and volume of sediment deposits. This study used quantitative approach, it began with distributing questionnaire forms and measuring the depth of the reservoir. The current condition of floating net cages is 4916 occupying 5.819% of the inundation area of 312.15 ha with an elevation of 712.50 m, while floating net cages are allowed according to the carrying capacity of Darma Reservoir waters amounting to 1,021. tons / harvest while the spawning pond is 3.483 tons/harvest. The volume of normal active storage for elevation 712.50 in 2020 is 28.086 million m3, while the volume of sediment deposits is 9.262 million m3 32.98%, the average sediment rate in the reservoir from 1988 to 2020 is 0.2894 million m3/year, while the sediment rate in catchment area Dam Dharma with an area of 23.5 km2 of 71.873 mm/year. Sedimentation in the Darma Reservoir has exceeded the limit of the base elevation of the reservoir, the elevation of the dead reservoir and the lowest elevation, but the reservoir is still functional. The planning life of the darma reservoir is up to 50 years, the suitability of the initial planning of operations in 1970 with operations until 2020.

Abstract Research within marine aquaculture has either focused on technology (e.g. farming structures, autonomous systems, harvesting and transport technologies) or biology (e.g. biomass control, feeding process, fish behavior and welfare). Here, we present a computational framework allowing the integrated analysis of these two aspects in a flexible and evolutive way. This framework is called FhSim which was originally developed for the modelling and simulation of fisheries operations and aquaculture structures, but its application domain has been continuously extended through different research projects. In this paper, we present the basic design principles and functionality of the FhSim framework with the focus on modelling and simulation of marine aquaculture systems. The basic theories and methods used for the modelling of open net cages, closed cages, fish behavior, feeding processes, and ROV operations in net cages are introduced, respectively. It is also shown how the technological and biological aspects of fish farming can be considered in a specialized or integrated analysis. Furthermore, approaches for combining numerical models with monitoring sensor data, techniques for real-time simulation of fish farming operations and the coupling of FhSim with other simulation programs are discussed.

Blitar city has the potential of a superior product, which isnamely Koi fish farming. Koi fish are commodities have a potential market share with a relatively expensive sale value. This potential requires development and assistance activities because this business sector has its own problems. This article aims to analyze the potential development of the Koi ornamental fish business in Blitar district as a form of community service. The analysis was carried out with a literature-based review of research publications and community service. The results of the study were used as a reference for designing community service activities to develop the potential of Koi fish farming in the city of Blitar. The results of the analysis show that the results of research on hatchery and enlargement of Koi fish can be done by utilizing the surrounding natural resources. Community service activities are generally carried out for the technical aspects of cultivation, business management and marketing management. Development of Blitar Koi fish culture can be designed in the form of sustainable activities in accordance with the results of the analysis.

Because of scale effects and inappropriate hydrodynamic models, the nonlinear hydroelastic response of net cages used for fish-farming cannot be analyzed precisely with traditional model testing or combinations of finite element methods (FEMs) and load models. In this study, an innovative hybrid method is proposed to determine the hydroelastic response of full-scale floater-and-net systems more accurately. In this method, the net for the fish cage was vertically and peripherally divided into similar interconnected sections with different hydrodynamic parameters, which were assumed to be uniformly distributed over each section. A model of a typical section was subjected to various towing velocities, oscillation periods, and amplitudes in a towing tank to simulate the potential motions of all sections in the net under various currents, waves, and floater movements. By analyzing the measured hydrodynamic force from this test section, a hydrodynamic force database for a typical net section under various currents, waves, and floater motions was built. Finally, based on an FEM, the modified Morison equation and the hydrodynamic force database, the hydroelastic behavior of the full-scale fish cage was calculated with an iterative scheme. It is demonstrated that this hybrid method is able to produce correct hydroelastic response for both steady and oscillatory flows. The hydroelastic response of a two-dimensional example of a full-length net panel with steady currents and floater oscillations was studied in detail.
