Results of Bazhenov formation deposits organic matter complex investigations to assess its oil generation potential and maturity are presented. Researches were performed by Rock-Eval pyrolysis, rock structure analysis using scanning electron microscopy and organic matter transformation and distribution in the bulk of rocks using luminescent microscopy. As a result of the research, the general pattern for the Bazhenov formation kerogen thermal maturity variability along Western Siberia was confirmed, and the high maturity areas delimitation around the Salym high and the Krasnoleninsky arch was significantly specified. The areas of anomalously high maturity are not related to regional patterns of sedimentation. The possible influence of thermal maturity on the unconventional reservoirs with kerogen porosity formation in the Bazhenov formation and the features of their distribution were established. High thermal maturity that refers to the end of oil window is one of the main condition for the Bazhenov formation oil capacity formation, but knowledge of maturity change through the area pattern is not a sufficient condition for unconventional reservoirs including that with kerogen porosity retrieval.

The analysis of Bazhenov high-carbon formation organic matter catagenesis zonal distribution in connection with its own reservoir’s organic matter porosity made in this work. Realized research helped to articulate regional prospecting criteria for oil deposits in Bazhenov’s formation unconventional reservoir with organic porosity.

The main features of the geochemistry of individual aromatic compounds (phenanthrenes, dibenzothiophenes, mono- and triaromatic steroids) in chloroform extracts (bitumoids) from the open (regular form and coarse-crushed (≥0.5 cm) samples) and closed (fine-crushed (0.25 mm) samples) pore space of the Bazhenov Formation have been determined. The differences in the aromatic compounds distribution of organic matter of the Bazhenov Formation in the North of the Khantey hemiantheclise (Surgut region, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District, Western Siberia) are mainly related to its stage of thermal maturity which decreases in the south-west direction within the studying area. The most sensitive to maturity variations at the same catagenesis gradation are the parameters: CPI, Ts/Tm, 1/Ki ((n-C17 + n-C18)/(Pr + Ph)), MDR (4-MDBT/1-MDBT), DBTI ((2+3-MDBT)/DBT) and TASI (TAS I/(TAS I + TAS II)). Based on some indicators (PI, MPI, PP-1, MDR, DBTI etc.), it is possible to notice the decrease and equalization of its values in bitumoids from closed pores compared with those from open ones. It seems to be associated with the removal of the most transformed, light and migratory-capable part of bitumoids during their extraction from the open pore space of rocks.

The article presents the results of hydrocarbon compounds extracted from open pores and blocked by resinous-asphaltene compounds pores in the Tutleim formation rocks (a stratigraphic analogue of the Bazhenov formation) and the underlying Jurassic deposits on the territory of the Kamennaya crest of the Krasnoleninsky arch investigation. The aim of the work was both to study the possible migration of hydrocarbons along the section and area and to assess the variability of the bitumen composition in rocks relative to the structural plan of the area of interest, along the section, as well as unconventional reservoirs. It is shown that the structural features and the assumed additional heating of the rocks lead to variety in the hydrocarbons composition not only in open, but also in blocked pores, both through the area of Tutleim formation distribution and in different intervals of one well. It was established that in the sediments organic matter, which may slightly differ in nature within the formation, can accumulate, and this leads to some differences in the generation, accumulation and migration of hydrocarbon compounds processes. It is shown that the process of migration of hydrocarbons from the underlying sediments also affects the bitumen composition in the rocks of the Tutleim formation.

The paper presents a study of the structure and reservoir properties of rocks of the Bazhenov formation in the sections of three wells located in different structural zones of the Priobskoye field. It is shown that the porosity of the samples varies from 0.02% to 6.95%, the absolute gas permeability of the rocks reaches 1.364 mD. It is established that the collectors in the Bazhenov formation are confined to silicite-radiolarites (possessing porosity associated with the leaching of radiolarian shells) and kerogen-clay-siliceous rock and kerogen-clay silicite (porosity is associated with the release of space between the clay-siliceous matrix and kerogen by ripening organic matter). The following secondary processes influenced the formation of voids in these lithotypes: recrystallization of radiolarians and local warming up.

One of the most famous and promising shale formations in Russia is the Bazhenov formation. The ambiguity of ideas about its geological features, caused by the complex, heterogeneous structure of the strata, attracts the attention of many researchers. In this work, the Bazhenov formation is singled out in conjunction with its stratigraphic counterparts in the Bazhenov high-carbon formation (BVCHF). In this were considered the main characteristics of its allotment and distribution over the area, as well as the geological structure. Being an unconventional reservoir of hydrocarbons, BVCHF has properties of a petroleum-bearing rock, one of the main characteristics of which is organic matter, its type and maturity. The paper presents the results of the study of organic matter by various methods at the micro level, as well as their integration with larger-scale studies. The need for detailed consideration of the organic matter of the BVCHF is justified by the fact that it has a mixed composition and, as a consequence, a different degree of transformation and spatial distribution.
