This chapter examines teaching writing skills in English for Tourism by employing travel writing, which is not only a tool for teaching linguistic skills, but also encourages students to develop research interests and storytelling techniques. When travel writing was introduced to undergraduate and MA students during the English lessons the role of languages in Tourism, Tourism Discourse and Literary Tourism was also discussed with them. As part of the English assignment, students were asked to produce their own travel writing texts, which were discussed, reviewed by their teacher, re-written and – in the case of Master students – at the final stage, also published as an example of a teaching and learning experiment. Thus, this chapter presents travel writing as a successful method of developing travel writing skills inside the English for Specific Purposes classes.

This approach included teaching in the classroom, research in libraries and at home, and field work. The collection brings eight very different texts on Travel Writing and Literary Tourism by Master's students of Tourism, who were free in choosing the topic of the texts, their styles and the titles . The field of Travel Writing is significant, not only as its own discourse, a tourism trend and a tool of branding and embedding attractions and/or destinations, but also as a tool of teaching and learning a foreign language, which, along with upgrading specific language knowledge, encourages curiosity, research, creativity, reflection and self-development.

Academic writing is a particular type of scholarly interaction which signals the writer’s affiliation to a specific discourse community. Developing academic writing skills should become a priority for higher education. This paper describes a small-scale study which investigates the role of blogging in developing academic writing skills in undergraduate students. Blogging is viewed as a platform where the scholarly interaction between members of the same discourse community can take place. The paper is based on the survey data and observation during the experiment conducted at Alecu Russo Balti State University of Moldova. It reports on how EFL students reacted to the use of blogs for academic writing tasks. The findings suggest that students seem to have a positive attitude to blogging pointing out to such benefits as: enhanced self-efficacy, awareness of the writing process, development of reader awareness, increased responsibility for the quality of the writing. We argue that blogging can yield significant improvement in undergraduate students’ academic writing.

ABSTRACTThis research aimed to determine the effect of using Schoology as learning media on students’ writing interest. The research was done in a 2x2 experimental design with experimental and control classes selected as participants using purposive random sampling. The two groups had the same writing ability but received different learning media treatments, Picture Series for the control class, and Schoology for the experimental class. The Tukey’s test results showed that qobtain between columns A1 and A2(3.46) was higher than qtable (2.92) proving that using Schoology in teaching writing was significantly different from Picture Series. On the other hand, qobtain between cells A1B1and A2B1(4.47) was higher than qtable (3.08) proving that using Schoology differed significantly from Picture Series in teaching writing for students who had high interest. Then qobtain between cells A1B2and A2B2(0.41) was lower than qtable (3.08) proving that using Schoology did not differ significantly from Picture Series in teaching writing for students who had low interest. This study concludes that learning writing skills using Schoology affects students' levels of learning interests. Schoology, therefore, could be an alternative learning media platform for teaching and learning writing skills.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan media pembelajaran Schoology terhadap minat menulis siswa.

Content and Language Integrated Learning CLIL is becoming more and more valued as an educational solution to teaching foreign languages. The role ascribed to meaning content in communicative processes seems to explain the increasing popularity and spread of integrative approaches to teaching foreign languages across Europe and in the world. The explanation of the effectiveness of CLIL can also be sought in our understanding of how second language acquisition takes place. The theoretical part of the paper outlines the links made between the outcomes of second language acquisition research and CLIL and sheds some light on the role of meaning in communicative processes. The empirical study investigates the role of teachers in CLIL science classrooms in the context of writing scientific reports and the role of English of CLIL science classes in teaching referencing skills. The results of the research indicate to the roles that CLIL science teachers should play in the development of writing skills, including the use of referencing styles. There is also some evidence to suggest that in order for the successful integration of content and language to occur, some form of cooperation between language and CLIL content teachers should exist, especially in the context of teaching referencing skills.

The English syllabus for learners pursuing engineering courses includes teaching writing as one of the objectives. Learners who enroll for these courses are not equipped with the general writing skills that they should have mastered at the entry level. In this context, a study was organized to develop academic writing skills of the undergraduate learners who are pursuing engineering courses. The study focused on raising awareness in the learners of the nature and characteristics of academic texts in order to develop academic writing skills. The study also emphasizes that involving the learners in the cognitive processes of writing that include defining the rhetorical problem, identifying the rhetorical situation, the audience and setting goals for writing, planning for the text by generating and organizing ideas is necessary. The study further suggests that discussions between learners and teachers regarding the construction of a text and the way language works in various text types facilitates better writing.
