Background: The study was carried out at the Dairy farm of Banaras Hindu University, Dist. Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh). Twelve (12) Sahiwal and Hariana cows ranging 4 - 6 years of age was randomly selected for present investigations. Animals were stratified for their initial body weight and age. The objective of the study was to compare the effect of feeding chelated mineral based formulation on dairy cow production performance, namely milk yield and milk composition. Methods: The trial was conducted with dairy cows 3 - 4 months of lactation. The experimental treatments included: Fedamin (Chelated minerals, given 50 gm. /day/ cow) and control. The study lasted from 0 to 30 days. Milk yield and milk composition of cows were measured individually on days 1, 8, 15, 22 and 30. Result: The Fedamin treated group (Chelated minerals) improved the milk yield and fat percentage in milk during this study as compared to control and specific gravity, solid-not fat, protein, lactose and total solids of milk differ non-significantly.

Twenty–one multiparous Holsteins were used in a cross over design with two 28-d periods. Cows were randomly assigned to two treatments to assess the effect of textured and pelleted concentrates fed with alfalfa cubes on feed intake, milk yield, milk composition and rumen volatile fatty acid concentrations. Those animals receiving the textured concentrate had significantly (P < 0.05) higher milk yield and milk fat percentage than did those animals fed the pelleted concentrate. A significant difference in the ratio of milk protein to milk fat was also observed with the cows receiving the pelleted concentrate having a ratio of 1.31 and the cows receiving the textured concentrate a ratio of 1.02. No significant (P < 0.05) differences were observed between the textured and pelleted feeds in total or individual volatile fatty acid concentrations. These results indicate that the feeding of textured concentrates can lead to an increase in milk fat production when compared with the feeding of pelleted concentrates. AbstractThis study observes the effects of manipulating the diet in its physical form and in cereal composition of the concentrate on sorting behaviour, feed intake, composition of milk, and degree of discomfort in dairy cows. In a commercial dairy farm with 360 mid-lactation Holstein cows (averaged 105 days), three treatments of feeding handling were applied sequentially during 120 days, each separated by periods of 30 days of resting: (1) Time of chopping of the total mixed ration (TMR): 15min (N= 180) and 23min (N= 180), (2) Physical form of the concentrate: meal (N= 180) and pellet (N= 180), and (3) Cereal composition in the concentrate: mix of corn, barley and wheat in traditional proportions (3.6:1:1) (N= 120), barley only (N= 120) and corn only (N= 120). Animals feeding TMR chopped for 23min selected less and consumed more ration, and had more milk protein and less discomfort than cows feeding TMR chopped for 15min. The physical form of the concentrate, meal or pellet, did not affect feed sorting, but the meal form resulted in greater feed intake and milk fat percentage. The type of cereal in the concentrate did not affect feed sorting but affected feed intake, milk yield and milk composition. In conclusion, it is recommended using TMR chopped during 23min instead of 15min and using the traditional mix of cereals in the concentrate (corn, barn and wheat) instead of using only one cereal.

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding herbal galactogogue preparation (Sanjivani biokseera) on the milk yield and milk constituents in lactating Kankrej cows. Thirty-two lactating Kankrej cows in their 1st to 6th lactation were taken for the experiment from 3 days after calving up to 52 days postpartum. All the animals were fed as per the standard seasonally available roughages and concentrates to meet their nutritional requirements. The cows were randomly divided into two uniform groups of 16 cows in each according to initial milk yield and milk composition. The animals in group-I were not given any supplement and served as control. The animals in group-II were given Sanjivani biokseera (Naturewell Industries) @ 60 g per day for 1-month, commencing 3 days after calving, in addition to the usual feeds/fodders. A clear difference was observed in milk yield from day 8 onward of experiment between groups with significant (plessthan0 0.05) higher values from day 16-52 in cows fed herbal galactogogue as compared to control, but no such distinct effect on milk constituents was observed on day 52 when analyzed. The use of herbal galactogogue significantly (p lessthan 0.05) increased the overall average of 52 days milk production, which was 9.34 ± 0.21 lit/day in supplemented as compared to 7.75 ± 0.26 lit/day in control animals. It was concluded that herbal galactogogue (Sanjivani biokseera) could increase milk yield in lactating dairy cows through its galactopoetic property and improved rumen environment.

The aim of this research was to observe the effect of heat stress on milk yield and milk compositions of Holstein Friesian crossbred (HF) dairy cows. To fulfill the objectives, a total of 9 Holstein Friesian crossbred cows were selected for this study. Green grasses (German, Para) were supplied adlibitum and concentrate feeds (mixture of wheat bran, rice polish, mustard oil cake, di-calcium phosphate and salt) were supplied at the rate of 2.0 kg/day/cow. Management practices for all the cows were similar following the BAU Dairy farm practices. Data were collected on milk yield (l/h/d), relative humidity (%) and barn temperature (0C). The obtained temperature humidity index (THI) of July, August, September and October were 84.95, 81.99, 81.40 and 79.57, respectively. The highest THI was found in July which indicated higher heat stress during this month. A significant difference (p<0.05) in milk yield of cows was found among different months of July to October. The highest milk yield (6.10±0.50 l/h/d) was found in October among observed months. The compositions of milk such as total solids (TS), solids-not-fat (SNF), fat, protein, lactose, and ash also differed significantly (p<0.01). The highest values (%) of TS, SNF, fat, protein, lactose and ash content of milk were found in October as 12.63, 8.80, 3.83, 3.69, 4.39 and 0.72, respectively and lowest values (%) were in July as 12.20, 8.50, 3.71, 3.50, 4.30 and 0.69, respectively due to the high THI value. From these results, it is concluded that heat stress has strong effect on milk yield and milk composition of HF cows in Bangladesh. SummaryIn experiments to determine the effect of feeding changes on milk yield and composition, udder disease or injury may easily invalidate the results, particularly those for milk composition. It is suggested that regular examination of the milk from each quarter of the udder would allow a diseased or injured quarter to be recognized and a true value for the effect of the feeding treatment to be obtained from the composition of the milk from at least two healthy quarters. Examples to illustrate the suggestion are given.

A field study was conducted in Ghaziabad District to observe the effect of mineral mixture feeding on milk yield in Buffalo. Animals were selected randomly from 5 villages of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh viz. Muradnagar, Noorpur, Kanoja, Kusalia, and Badka. 20 Buffaloes were selected in their 2nd and 3rd stage of lactation and divided into two groups of 10 animals each. First group (T) was fed with 60 gm mineral mixture daily till 90 days of lactation. Other groups (C) of 10 animals were not fed additional mineral mixture, which is farmers practice in that particular area. The farmers were not fed scientific method of feeding. They could not added proper quantity of mineral mixture in balance ration. To keeping in mind a trial was conducted in Ghaziabad District since 2016-17 to 2017-18. Milk yield of these animals was recorded by their owners and these values were averaged for fortnightly interval. Milk production parameters like average daily milk yield, peak yield and total milk yield were compared between treatment and control groups. It was observed that average daily milk yield, peak yield and total milk yield were found significantly (P less than 0.05) higher by 11.04, 12.37 and 11.61% in mineral mixture fed group than control group. On the basis of this, it is recommended that continuous feeding of mineral mixture bettered performance of milk yield in buffaloes.

They were added to page 89 on 17th May 2018.Anthelmintic resistance (AR) to commonly used dewormers is one of the major world-wide constrain in livestock production. The present study was investigated the status of AR in BAU dairy farm, Mymensingh and Talukder dairy farm, Sirajganj. Faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) was applied to assess AR in cattle of two dairy farms during January to June 2017. The anthelmintics tested were Albendazole (ABZ), a benzimidazole anthelmintic (Almex®, Square Ltd.) and Ivermectin (IVM) (Vermic®, Techno drugs Ltd.), administered at the doses recommended by the manufacturers. In each farm, cattle were divided into treatment and control (not treated) group based on faecal egg counts (FEC), that is at least 200 eggs/g. At 14 days after treatment, faecal samples were collected for post-treatment FEC, which is compared between treatment and control group. Resistance was defined if there was <95% reduction, with lower 95% confidence limit (CL) <90% in the FEC. AR was present in both the dairy farms involved in this study. The FECRT using ABZ revealed 79.7% (95% CL 87.9, 65.8) reduction and 95.8% (95% CL 98.7, 87.1) reduction of FEC in BAU and Talukder dairy farms, respectively. Also, FECRT using IVM revealed 77.9% (95% CL 97.7, 85.5) and 94.2% (95% CL 97.7, 85.5) reduction of FEC in BAU and Talukder dairy farms, respectively. Our study suggest that AR is present in both selected dairy farms and further extensive studies are required to determine the extent of AR in different cattle farms of Bangladesh.Res. Agric., Livest. The results of studies undertaken outside the United Kingdom suggest that the inclusion of 50 g of 30% protected DL Methionine (Ketionin) into the ration of conventionally fed dairy cows improves feed utilisation, milk yield, fertility and health. For instance (Spørndly (1981) in Sweden measured the weight of cows during the experimental period and found that the weight loss in the control group was twice that of the cows that received Ketionin. In West Germany a significant increase in milk of 2.0 kg per day was obtained by Kaufmann and Hagemeister (1980) and similar results were reported by Kuther (1982). Stoikov (1978) in studies on 673 cows in Bulgaria showed an improvement in calving rate from 37% in the control group to 55% in the treated group and Daugaard (1978) working in Denmark reported that the inclusion of Ketionin reduced the incidence of Ketosis.

This study was performed to investigate the polymorphisms in the ABCG2 (ATP-binding cassette sub-family G member 2) gene and to reveal the association of genotypes with breeding value (BV) for first lactation milk yield and milk composition traits of Karan Fries (HF crossbred) cattle. The traits were adjusted against the significant effect of non-genetic factors. PCR-RFLP analysis of ABCG2 (exon 14) gene revealed three genotypes. AA genotype in ABCG2 gene had significant effect on BV for average test day fat percentage. The identified potential genetic marker could be used for the development of Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) strategy for higher milk yield and milk composition traits in Karan Fries Cattle.
