Influence of Nano Formulation on Augmenting the Seed Quality in Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

Background: Groundnut were mainly cultivated under rain fed condition, lack of initial seedling quality due to lower moisture conditions, it causes reduced crop yield and in sometimes it leads to crop failure. In order to overcome this problems, effective seed enhancement techniques as seed coating plays major role in maintaining the seed quality. Methods: The controlled release of bioactive molecules namely hormones gibberellic acid (GA3) as a smart delivery system can be achieved through seed coating in groundnut by exploiting advanced nanotechnology. Infusion of active ingredients as hormones (GA3) through the seed coating formulation by nano formulation methods. At nano level it influences the effects at higher level and gives best results through controlled release of hormones without any loss. Result: Due to nano formulation coating in groundnut, seeds had an effective results in all the parameters viz., imbibition rate (48%), speed of germination (5.5), germination percentage (87%), seedling length (24.7 cm), vigour index (2142), hydrolysing enzymes (α-amylase14.83 and lipase 1.481), which significantly differs from untreated seeds. Hence, it was concluded that the GA3 infused nano formulation coating at 15 ml per kilogram of seed can be used for seed quality improvement in groundnut for better seedling establishment.

The continuous rise in global population demands more food production under limited land resources accompanied by climate change. More oversupply of quality seeds to meet ever-growing food demand is a highly challenging task. Seeds with low vigour level limit the growth and yield of crops at varied field conditions. Hence, an experiment was conducted to develop a technique for the fast and homogeneous growth of kabuli chickpea seeds. The priming treatments evaluated in the present study enhanced the various seed quality parameters of kabuli chickpea significantly when compared to control. Hydro-priming for 4 hours (at 20°C) and air drying for 72 hours showed better results compared to rest of the treatments both in fresh seeds which recorded higher first count (66.38%), germination (92.50%) root length (11.85 cm), shoot length (6.16), mean seedling length (18.01), dry seedling weight (747 mg), seedling vigour index-I (1665), higher speed of emergence (0.3992) and old seeds with higher first count (61.88%), germination (74.13%) root length (8.15 cm), shoot length (5.85 cm), mean seedling length (14.00 cm), seedling dry weight (611 mg), seedling vigour index-I (1056), higher speed of emergence (0.3814). The aged seeds have recorded 29 % increase in germination percentage in contrast to 8 percent increases in fresh seeds. Kabuli chickpea seeds could be subjected to hydropriming, an affordable, alternative, and eco-friendly technique for improving seed and seedling vigour of kabuli chickpea.

Planting healthy seeds and other inputs have an impact on seed quality, fungal invasion deteriorates the seed quality in soil and storage. Studies on chickpea carried out at Seed Research and Technology Center, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad during spring 2010-11 2011-12 revealed that benomyl was found effective followed by Pseudomonas fluorescens in the inhibition of mycelial growth of Fusarium solani. Maximum germination percentage was recorded with Benomyl (Benomyl 500 WP) @ 2 g/kg seed (treated check) and Tebuconazole @ 1 ml/ kg seed (95 per cent) followed by treatment with P. fluorescens @ 10 g/kg seed along with soil application of P. fluorescens @ 3 kg/acre (94 per cent). Maximization of growth parameters like root length, shoot length and total seedling length were observed with Benomyl @ 2 g/ kg seed  as 17.0 cm, 10.3 cm and 27.3 cm, respectively. Considering seedling vigour index as an important seed quality character, P. fluorescens and Benomyl @ 2 g/kg seed recorded high seedling vigor index. The per cent recovery of infested seeds was found to be low with treated seeds when compared to the control.

            The study was conducted to standardize the methodology of humid priming for improving the seed germination and vigour of okra seeds and to compare the efficacy of different enhancement techniques such as hydro priming, spin priming, seed coating and the combination of ‘humid priming + seed coating’ in improving the seed vigour characteristics of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.). In order to standardize the humid priming technique, okra seeds were subjected to humid priming for four different duration’s viz., 2, 4, 6 and 8 h, shade dried to original moisture content and subjected to evaluation of seed germination   under shade net conditions in raised beds. The results revealed that 4 h of humid priming was statistically significant to the rest of the durations, with respect seed germination and seedling growth. With respect to anatomical potential, the radicle length (3.39mm), cotyledon length (6.69mm) and cotyledon width (6.30mm), recorded by humid priming (4 h) was 62.2 %, 6.4 % and 2.6 % higher than control seeds. The second experiment conducted to compare the efficacy of hydro priming, spin priming, polymer coating and combination of humid priming + seed coating. The study revealed that seeds subjected to combination of humid priming (4 h) + seed coating (3g kg-1) recorded highest physiological potential in terms of germination percentage (87 %), seedling length (20.2 cm), dry matter production (421.3 mg), vigour index (1765), root volume (3.5 cm3) and root sheath (2.560 g) while the control recorded only 70 %, 15.1 cm, 328.7 mg, 1055, 2.0 cm3 and 1.532 g, respectively.

Laboratory experiments were carried out during August to September 2004 and 2005 at the Seed Technology Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh to determine the effects of harvesting stages on the seed quality of lentil. Lentil seeds of three varieties were harvested at three stages at 7-day intervals viz. i) when the pods were yellowish with a few yellow greens (H1 stage), ii) when most of the pods were light brown with a few yellow (H2 stage), and iii) when all the pods were completely brown and dry (H3 stage). All the seeds were stored in earthen pot until conducting the laboratory study. Non-significant variation was observed in three varieties of lentil for most of the parameters studied. The highest germination percentage, root length, shoot length, seedling length and vigour index (vigour index-I and vigour index-Il) were observed in BARI Masur-4, and the lowest in BARI Masur-2. Harvesting stage had significant effect on some parameters studied. Seeds collected at the stage when most of the pods were light brown with a few yellow (H2 stage) recorded the highest germination percentage, dry weight, root length, shoot length, seedling length and vigour index (vigour index-I and vigour-Il) in both the years. BARI Masur-4 seeds collected at H2 stage recorded the highest dry weight and vigour index-I in both the years and vigour index-Il in 2004. Key Words: Lentil; harvesting stage; storage; seed quality. The present study was conducted to know the effect of extracts from parts of papaya and pomegranate fruits containing enormous amount of antioxidants on the seed quality parameters of blackgram (Vigna mungo L.). Blackgram seeds were soaked in papaya peel, pulp, seeds and pomegranate peel, seeds extracts viz., 2.5 %, 5 %, 7.5 % and 10 % concentration for 1 hour. The physiological parameters were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The results revealed that seeds treated with 2.5 % papaya seed extract recorded high physiological and biochemical changes in terms of field emergence, germination percentage, seedling length, dry matter production, vigour index and ?- amylase activity when compared to rest of treatments and control.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the seed quality of chickpea (cv. PG-186) and lentil (cv. HUL-57) seed samples collected from randomly selected districts of different agroclimatic zones of Bihar. The seed quality was assessed based on their physiological (seed moisture, seed germination, seedling length, vigour index, etc.) and biochemical enzymes (SOD, POX and CAT) parameters. Based on the physiological and biochemical evaluation, the chickpea seed sample collected from the Sheikhpura district was found significantly high quality (96.3% germination percentage) among all, while seeds collected from Begusarai (76.7%) and Darbhanga (77.7%) districts exhibited lowest germination percentage. The germination and vigour of lentil seed revealed that the sample of Patna district was having the highest germination percentage (98.7%) while seeds collected from Katihar and Rohtas district exhibited lowest germination percentage (66% and 74.3% respectively). In the case of biochemical analysis of both chickpea and lentil seed samples, higher SOD, POX and CAT activities were observed in seeds in which the highest germination percentage was recorded. On the basis of the results of chickpea and lentil seed samples, the seed lots were categorized into high, mid and low vigour. Among chickpea, the seed samples of Sheikhpura, Patna, Munger, Bhagalpur, Lakhisarai, and Jehanabad were categorized as high vigour; while seeds of Darbhanga and Begusarai district were categorized as low vigor. Similarly, in case of lentil the seed samples of Patna, Munger, Bhagalpur, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, and Khagaria were categorized as high vigour; while seeds of Rohtas and Kathiahr district were categorized into low vigor. This study will be helpful to the farmers and pulses growers in order to enhance the seed quality for getting higher production in respective districts.

Sesame is notable for its rich antioxidants and sesame oil is also familiar for its resistance to oxidation. The cultivation of sesame is usually restricted under abiotic stress conditions. Hence in order to study the performance of sesame genotypes to saline stress, an experiment was conducted to screen ten ruling varieties of sesame viz., CO1, SVR1, SVPR1, VRI 1, VRI 2, TMV 3, TMV 4, TMV 5, TMV 6 and TMV 7 at five different EC levels (EC 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Seedling observations namely, germination percentage, speed of germination, shoot length, root length and dry matter production were recorded. Among the genotypes, it was found that under higher saline conditions (EC5), VRI 1 recorded higher seedling length (2.0 cm), vigour index I (100) and vigour index II (1.15), whereas under normal condition, TMV 4 and CO 1 performed better. In general, there was a decrease in all the seedling parameters with increased levels of salinity. With STAR software, Multivariate analysis was done and on the basis of dendrogram, five clusters were formed and the cophenotic correlation co- efficient was found highest in Control (0.912) followed by EC 2 ( 0.829).

The experiment was conducted at Department of Seed Science and Technology CCS, Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar, Haryana from 2013-15 and comprised of seventeen treatment combinations of manures (viz., FYM and Vermicompost), bio-fertilizers (viz., Rhizobium and PSB) and fertilizers. The freshly harvested fenugreek seeds of all the seventeen treatment plot combinations were stored in plastic containers under ambient conditions up to a period of eighteen months. Seed quality was assessed at a regular interval of six months. A significant decline in seed quality was observed in all the nutrient combinations as the period of ageing increased. It was observed that the treatment combination of Rhizobium and PSB along with 75% Recommended Dose of Nitrogen (RDN) recorded significantly higher germination % (87.33%), seedling length (24.77 cm), dry weight (7.5 mg), vigour index-I (2163) and vigour index-II (657) followed by PSB with 100% RDN and Rhizobium with 100% RDN after eighteen months of ambient storage as compared to control. The electrical conductivity (333 µS cm-1g-1) was also recorded minimum in the treatment Rhizobium and PSB along with 75% RDN followed by PSB with 100% RDN and Rhizobium with 100% RDN after the period of ambient storage while the maximum was recorded in control. The study highlighted that the slightly reduced dose of inorganic nitrogen was best when applied in combination with bio-fertilizer (Rhizobium+PSB) for maximizing the storage potential of fenugreek seed as compared to the rest of treatments.

Bean and okra are common vegetables cultivated in the most regions of Sri Lanka.  The seeds of these crops are mainly stored in cold storage as bulk before releasing retail lots to sales outlets. Commercial growers and gardeners buy seeds in bulk or in packages at retail stores. Although certified seeds are frequently tested by the seed testing laboratories, they do not guarantee the maximum field emergence. Certified seed lots of two pole bean varieties, ‘Keppetipola Nil’ (KN) and ‘Bandarawela Green’ (BG) and two okra varities,’MI-5’ and ‘Haritha’ were stored in poly sack and polypropylene bags under controlled temperature (17±1 °C) and relative humidity (RH) (52-55%) over a two-year period. Bulk seeds of bean and okra varieties packed in polypropylene and poly sack bags depicted a high germination percentage throughout the storage period for two years. Seed quality parameters, seed germination, seed moisture, field emergence and vigour index significantly varied with the storage duration and declined in varieties. Significant differences in moisture, field emergence and vigour index were recognized as affected by the packing materials in all varieties except MI-5. Both Poly sack and polypropylene packing materials were found suitable to maintain viability at the minimum seed certification standards for two years of storage period. Poly sack was more appropriate than polypropylene to keep viability for more than 2 years of storage under low temperature and RH condition. These findings would help seed handlers including seed producers and seed sellers to store crop seeds between growing seasons in the tropical environment.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is an important cereal crop in Kenya. Despite the crops importance, the yields attained by farmers in Eastern, Coastal and Nyanza regions of Kenya remain low. Access to good quality seeds of sorghum is one of the constraints facing the subsistence farmers. Good quality seed is important for increasing yield to attain food security. The aim of this study was to evaluate quality attributes of the seed used by farmers. A total of 108 germplasm accessions were obtained from 76 farmers. The seeds were tested for time and percentage of germination, seed vigour index, shoot and root dry weight. Data collected was subjected to analysis of variance. Means were separated using Fisher’s Least Significance Difference test at p ≤ 0.05. Seed samples of 26 accessions attained germination percentage below stipulated standards by Seeds and Plant Varieties Act CAP 326. Majority of seeds showed longer mean germination time with only nine accessions germinating in less than ten days. Seed vigour index was relatively high in most of the accessions, while biomass accumulation varied from high to very low among accessions. Though most of the seeds attained a high germination percentage, about 92% of seeds showed longer mean germination time. The environmental conditions in the fields, pre and post harvest handling practices impact on the seed quality hence the wide variability in germination percentage, germination time, seed vigour index and dry matter accumulation. Therefore the need to improve quality of seeds used by subsistence farmers by providing extension services on best pre and post harvest handling practices. Increasing production of sorghum in these regions will contribute significantly towards realizing food security. Further analysis could be carried out on genetic and sanitary quality aspects of the seeds planted by farmers in Eastern, Nyanza and Coastal regions.
