Background: In Tunisia, water deficit and heat stress during the end of cycle are more frequent and causes significant yield losses. Selection of short cycle lines could be a good solution to escape the effect of heat and drought during the end of cycle. Furthermore, there is little published information on the effect of the sowing date on yield and its components in lentils. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the sowing date on yield and its components of some lentil lines. The best productive and early lines will be selected and therefore proposed for registration in the official catalog of plant varieties. The availability of these varieties to farmers could increase lentil production. Methods: Sixteen genotypes of lentil out of which 14 were advanced lines and 2 were checks varieties were used in this study. The field experiment was conducted during the 2017-2018 cropping season at Kef research station located in a semi-arid zone in north western Tunisia. Genotypes were sown on December 15th, 2017 and February, 7th, 2018. Seventeen agro-morphological parameters were recorded. Result: Based on agro-morphological analysis, lentil lines exhibited considerable genetic variability. Among the tested lines, L3 line seem to be the earliest lines. It showed high yield as well in timely and late sown dates. This line deserves more attention to develop short-cycle and high yielding variety.

Pod shattering in lentil which is vital plant of dry lands is a crucial feature for high yield. Selection of lentil variety is very important in order to reduce pod shatter. Some of lentil varieties are very productive; however, shattering loss decreases profitable yields. In this study, reduction of pod shatter in lentil varieties was investigated with application of polymer cyclohexane compounds. An experiment was conducted with split-split-plot experiment design with two lentil varieties (‘Firat-87’ and ‘Cagil’), two application time (podset and 15 days before harvest (DBH)) and three application doses (0, 0.5, 2 l·ha<sup>–1</sup>) as triplicate during two years. Effects of application time on podset were found statistically insignificant and application of 0.5 l·ha<sup>–1</sup> dose was found effective for 15 DBH application time. As a result, 0.5 pod shatter polymer cyclohexane and 15 DBH was found as optimum doses and application time, respectively in order to reduce pod shatter loss by nearly 1% for semiarid region of Turkey.

The main objective of this study was to quantify the influence of sowing date on growth and yield components of hybrid sunflower (Hysun33) cultivar in semi-arid zone. This experiment was conducted during the seasons 2014/2015-2015/2016 at the farm of the College of Agricultural Studies, Sudan University of Science and Technology, Shambat, Khartoum- Sudan. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications and three treatments. Different parameters were considered including plant height, leaf area index (LAI), filled sees number/head, head diameter, dry weight and yield components. The collected data were statistically analyzed. The results revealed that crop sown in May and July showed significant increase in plant height, LAI, head diameter, dry weight, field seed number/head, weight of 100 seeds; yield, and yield; compared to crop sown in March. However, crop sown in the second season showed an increase in growth and yield components compared to the crop of the first season.

Peanut (Arachis hypogea L.) is an important nut crop extensively grown in rainfed regions of Pakistan. The crop requires low inputs; thus, could grow successfully under diverse environmental conditions. Due to pegging ability, peanut grows aggressively in sandy and sandy-loam soils. However, it has not introduced to Thal region of southern Punjab, Pakistan. A two-year field experiment was conducted to optimize sowing dates for two peanut genotypes (‘BARI-2016’ and ‘NO-334’) in Thal region (Layyah). Similarly, a yield trial was conducted at Chakwal where both genotypes are extensively grown. Five sowing dates (10th April, 1st May, 20th May, 10th June and 30th June) were included in the study. The highest seed yield was obtained with early sown crop (10th April) during both years. Pod formation reduced with increasing atmospheric temperature and no pods were formed on the plants sown on 30th June. Decreased pod formation seemed a major reason for low yield in late-sown crop. The highest yield was observed for the crop sown on 10th April, which was decreased by 40% for the crop sown on 1st May. Genotype ‘BARI-2016’ performed better for seed yield at both locations compared with ‘NO-334’. The results suggested that genotype ‘BARI-2016’ is more adaptive to arid and semi-arid condition under rainfed or irrigated conditions. Sowing peanut at optimum time would increase seed yield in arid and semi-arid regions. Nonetheless, ‘BARI-2016’ can be grown under rainfed and irrigated conditions successfully.

This experiment was conducted in Homs Agricultural Research Station, Homs, Syria during 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 seasons to study the effect of sowing date and plant density on bolting for four sugar beet varieties, tow are monogerm varieties i.e. Parade and Etna, while the other are multigerm varieties i.e. Nadir and Mammoth. Three sowing dates were applied, began from 15/9 to 15/10, the interval between the sowing dates was 15 days. Three plant densities were executed (133 000, 100 000 and 80 000 plantha-1). Split plot design was used with three replicates. The combined analysis exhibited the significant effect of varieties (V), sowing dates (S), and plant densities (D) on all types of bolting (Early, medium, late and total). Least significant test (L.S.D 0.05) clarified that early autumn sowing (15/9 and 1/10) increased total bolting percent 74.86 and 44.88 % respectively, as compared with date (15/10) 15.57% (control). The plant density (133 000 plant ha-1) decreased total bolting percent 43.56% as compared with the other plant densities (80 000 and 100 000 plant ha-1) 46.35 and 45.40% respectively. The results showed that the monogerm varieties were superior and more resistant to bolting as compared with the multigerm ones. Purpose. Comprehensive study, selection, evaluation and systematization of self-pollinated lines of maize (Zea mays L.) obtained on the basis of material of diffe­rent genetic structure from endosperm of flint and dent maize were implemented according to the main economically valuable traits and precocity in order to select the best genotypes for selection. Methods. Hybridization, inbreeding were used in the process of creating the initial material; visual method – for phenological observations; laboratory and field – to determine the morphobiological characteristics of self-pollinated lines of maize; measuring and weighing – to account the harvest and determine the metric characteristics of plants; mathematical and statistical – to determine the validity of the results, indicators of trait variability, correlation dependence of traits; analysis of variance; comprehensive assessment of morphobiological and economically valuable traits of self-pollinated maize lines of the most common germplasms. Results. As a result of assessment of self-pollinated lines of the most common germplasms, it was revealed that the highest level of grain yield was obtained under both sowing periods – Iodent germplasm; the minimum grain moisture content – Flint and Mix germplasms; the shortest average duration of the emergence – flowering of 50% of male and female inflorescences stage – Flint germplasm; steadily high va­lues ​​of plant height for germplasm Mix – under the optimal sowing date, and Iodent plasma – under the late sowing date. Steadily high values ​​of the ear insertion height at both sowing dates were obtained for lines based on Iodent germplasm. The number of the most precocious and the best by the economically valuable traits germplasms of self-pollinated lines were identified. Conclusions. The DK239 lines – Flint germplasm, DK7174, DK2285, DK305, DK2613, DK5568 – Iodent germplasm, DK2332 and DK2659 – Mix germplasm were the most precocious and the best by the economically valuable traits. They are promising for the selection of ultra-early hybrids of maize adapted to the conditions of the Steppe of Ukraine.

In order to study the effect of planting date and cultivar on seed yield and germinating ability of soybean, an experiment was conducted for two seasons (2014 – 15 and 2015 – 16 ) at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh. Two popular varieties, viz., JS-335 and JS-93-05 were sown on four sowing dates i.e. July 2nd fortnight (FN), August 1st FN, August 2nd FN and September 1st FN during the two consecutive kharif crop seasons in FRBD design, replicated thrice. The variety JS-335 recorded significantly higher yield (1296 kg ha-1) than JS-93-05 (690 kg ha-1) . Early sowings during July 2nd FN and August Ist FN recorded significantly at par yields (1087 kg ha-1, 1101 kg ha-1 respectively) with good initial and aging germination percentage (81%, 58.8% respectively). Though September 1st FN sown crop recorded significantly lowest seed yield (860 kg ha-1), the initial and aging germination percentage were highest (88.6%, 66.0%).

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi season of 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 to find out the appropriate sowing date and optimum plant spacing for seed production of cauliflower (var. BARI Phulcopi-1). Four sowing dates viz. 20 September, 1 October, 10 October and 20 October and three plant spacing viz. 60 cm × 50 cm, 60 cm × 60 cm and 60 cm × 70 cm were used as treatment variables. Significant variation in seed yield and yield contributing characters of cauliflower were observed due to execution of different sowing dates and plant spacing. Number of branches plant-1, number of pods plant-1 and number of seeds pod-1 showed the highest in 1 October sowing as a result the highest seed yield (361.69 kgha-1) was obtained from same date of sowing. Sowing on 10 October and 20 October reduced seed yield drastically compared to that obtained from 1 October sowing. The lowest seed yield (188.54 kgha-1) was obtained from 20 October sowing. On the contrary, closer spacing (60 cm × 50 cm) produced the highest seed yield (315.88 kgha-1) and the wider spacing (60 cm × 70 cm) produced the lowest seed yield (254.07 kgha-1). However, combination of 1 October sowing with 60 cm × 50 cm plant spacing produced the highest seed yield (414.81 kgha-1) due to higher number of seeds pod-1. The seed yield decreased after 10 October sowing irrespective of plant spacing. So, early sowing (1 October) with closer spacing (60 cm× 50 cm) would be economically profitable for cauliflower seed production in North-Western part of Bangladesh.Bangladesh J. Agril. The experiment was carried out at Agronomy Research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong to find out optimum sowing date of sunflower during rabi season 2012-13. The sunflower var. BARI Surjomukhi-2 was used. Five sowing dates; 10 November, 20 November, 30 November, 10 December and 20 December were tested. It was revealed that yield and yield attributes of sunflower were significantly influenced by sowing dates. The maximum plant height (172.13 cm), head diameter (18.33), weight of seed / per head (66 g), 1000- seed weight (68 g) and yield (2.5 t ha?1) were obtained from 20 November sowing. The lowest yield (1.83 t ha?1) was obtained from 20 December sowing. The 20 November sowing received the higher duration for maturity (127 days), first flowering (57 days) and seed formation (20 days) while 20 December sowing showed shorter duration for maturity, first flowering and seed formation of 119, 54 and 14 days respectively. It was concluded that the 20 November sowing would be the optimum time of sowing for achieving maximum yield of sunflower.Bangladesh Agron. J. 2015, 18(1): 1-5

The effect of sowing time on development, yield and oil characteristics of irrigated sunflowers was studied in an experiment at the lrrigation Research Station, Ord lrrigation Area (15� 30'S, 128� 43'E), Western Australia in 1978. Sunflower cultivars Hysun 10, Hysun 30, Sunfola 68-2 and Polestar were sown at monthly intervals between mid-February and mid-August. Delay in sowing from February to June increased the period from sowing to physiological maturity by between 10 d (Hysun 10) and 24 d (Hysun 30), due mainly to an increase in the period from emergence to bud visible. Results showed that May sowing of the late maturing hybrid Hysun 30 was the best combination, with a seed yield of 2.3 t/ha. Oil content and quality (% linoleic acid) were highest with April sowing, 47.0 and 57.0%, respectively. Sowings from April to July gave acceptable yields (1.8-2.0 t/ha) and oil contents (45-47%). However, oil quality, although responding to sowing date, was always lower than the accepted level of 60% linoleic acid. Seed yields, which were considerably lower than those recorded for irrigated sunflower in southern Australia, are discussed in terms of the environmental limitations of the region

One of the basic agronomic practices to improve the yield of chickpea are ideal sowing date and high yielding varieties. Thus, a field experiment was conducted to assess the effect of different sowing dates on yield and yield components of chickpea varieties in the main cropping season of 2019 at Toke Kutaye District. Four sowing dates (September 4th, September 14th, September 24th, and October 5th) and four kabuli varieties. Four Kabuli types of chickpea varieties were Dalota, Ejere, Teji and Dube (local check). Experiment was laid out in split plot design using factorial arrangement with three replications and sowing date treatments were assigned to the main plots and varieties to sub plots. The main effect of sowing date showed highly significant effect on days to emergence, days to 50% flowering and physiological maturity. Highest days to emergence                (12.4 days) were recorded from a plot sown on October 5th, while longest days to 50% flowering (54.92 days) and physiological maturity (122.5 days) were recorded from a plot sown on September 14th. Moreover, varieties had significant effect on days to physiological maturity of chickpea. Longest days to physiological maturity (133 days) were recorded from local variety and early days to physiological maturity (113.3 days) was recorded from Dalota variety. The main effects of sowing date and variety were significant on plant height, as the tallest plant height (42.75 cm) was recorded from September 24th sown plants. Similarly, the tallest (41.42 cm) plant was recorded from Dalota variety. In addition, the highest number of primary branches (6.83) and secondary branches (16.42) per plant were recorded from Dalota variety, while the lowest number of primary branch (5.5) and secondary branches (8) were scored from Ejere and Teji varieties, respectively. Highest grain yield (2415.4 kg ha-1) was obtained from plots sown on September 14th whereas Dalota variety produced highest grain yield (2051.25 kg ha-1). Hence, Dalota variety and September 14th sowing date emerged as best among all tested treatments and can be recommended for chickpea production in the study area and similar agro-ecologies. Conclusive recommendation could be obtained if the study is repeated at more locations and seasons in the future.
