This paper presents the results of the research of the characteristics of achievement motive of future physical education teachers. Starting from understanding of the importance of achievement motive for the successful accomplishment of professional goals and roles of teachers, the aim of our research is to examine the level of achievement motive, the characteristics of its structure and differences according to gender. The instrument MOP2002 (Francesko et al., 2002a) was applied, which presupposes the complex structure of this motive. The sample consisted of 373 students (263 male and 110 female) of the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education in Belgrade. The results show that their achievement motive is characterized by the tendency towards high level of presence, and its structure is in the largest degree determined by the components accomplishing goals as a source of pleasure and perseverance in accomplishing goals, which is followed by orientation towards planning. The component competing with others is demonstrated in a moderate degree and it is least expressed. It was shown that female students have a larger degree of achievement motive when compared to male students, and accomplishing goals as a source of pleasure and perseverance in accomplishing goals mostly contribute to the difference in structure of achievement motive. It can be expected that the achievement motive, with the structure and degree of presence determined in our respondents, will contribute that they, as future teachers, become a good motivational model and the creators of a desirable motivational climate.

Space is the basic geographical concept which we gradually acquire. Through an articulation of the concepts LEFT and RIGHT from spatial orientation in first grade elementary school, using different contents, methods and resources one discovers a richness of methodical forms of which each, in its own fashion, participates in the realisation of the process of teaching and upbringing. The correlation with Physical education, art classes and mathematics confirms this fact. Such a mode of elaborating the content fulfills the basic requisite of wholeness in the teaching process which results in a higher motivation of pupils and better study results.

The objectives of the prepared article are to give the readers a brief account of the main ideas and foundations stones of a relatively new theory of motor learning, OPTIMAL, formulated by Gabriele Wulf and Rebecca Lewthwait, and also to point out the possibility of its application in school physical education lessons, particularly in teaching sports games. The authors critically assess “traditional” teaching of new locomotor skills stressing the frequent neglect of the internal motivation of pupils and support for their autonomy. According to them, in traditional teaching practice, internal focus of attention is imposed on the pupils, i.e. concentration on the movements of the body or its parts. They claim that the result of such an approach is learning that is not sufficiently effective. On the contrary, they recommend that the teachers should consciously raise the pupils’ expectations, support the need for autonomy by their more active involvement in the teaching process and focus their attention externally, towards the goals of the task. It seems that the practical application of the OPTIMAL theory in school physical education lessons is feasible. It is, above, all the support for autonomy that follows the current trends. However, we expect high demands set on the organization of the teaching process and on the teachers themselves. Future testing in the school practice is necessary. The TGFU (Teaching Games for Understanding) didactic paradigm has been successfully used in teaching sports games for a number of years. Due to the similarity of some principles of the OPTIMAL theory and this paradigm, it is apparent that the new theory of motor learning could be successful, too, particularly in teaching the fundamentals of game skills in sports games. This assumption, however, should also become a subject of testing in the future.

This paper discusses the concept of “motivation” in relation to the process of music education. The most effective ways of teaching are highlighted, which allow achieving a high level of motivation among students learning music, among which the method of active learning is recognized as the most effective for achieving this goal. The system of various motives that induce the student to educational activity is considered. Particular attention is paid to the process of formation and development of motives and needs; emphasis is placed on the importance of a personal approach to learning, taking into account the individual characteristics and abilities of each student. The personality of the teacher and the nature of his relationship with students are recognized as one of the fundamental factors affecting the success of training. The main pedagogical conditions that contribute to the increase of the motivational sphere of students are highlighted, such as: a personal approach, the creation of a special motivational atmosphere, the aspiration for the transition to self-education and self-development, the choice of the most effective forms of work. The conclusion is made about the necessary presence of internal motivation for the process of learning a subject (in this case, music) for productive educational activity. The problems in the field of music education are revealed, which consists in the lack of psychological knowledge among music teachers about the specifics of the formation of the motivational sphere of students.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the opinions of physical education teachers on the concept of sportsmanship. This study, which has been based on the qualitative research paradigm, involves opinions of 13 physical education teachers (9 males and 4 females) which serve in public schools of Turkey and which have been specified through a critical incident sampling. A “semi-structured interview form” which has been developed using a literature review and expert opinions has been used to collect data. The descriptive analysis technique was used in analyzing the obtained data. Results of the study showed that physical education teachers have different views on the sportsmanship concept. Although physical education teachers stated their opinions on requirement of activities towards enhancing the awareness with regard to the sportsmanship concept in schools they work in, it was determined that they performed few activities pertaining to sportsmanship. However, it was seen that the current physical education course programs do not provide teachers with sufficient information regarding the sportsmanship education and that teachers desire to have education on the sportsmanship concept during in-service training activities. Furthermore, the involved teachers think that quality of the current university education in terms of the sportsmanship concept should be improved. In conclusion, in order to enhance the quality of physical education teachers with regard to the sportsmanship concept, particularly faculties of education are recommended to include compulsory courses containing both the theory and practice on sportsmanship and researchers are recommended to develop sample activities and practice guiding physical education teachers.

The purpose of this study was to examine physical education (PE) preservice teachers’ (PSTs) experiences applying the teaching personal and social responsibility model (TPSR) at the elementary level. Fuller’s (1969) theory of concern development served as a framework for this study. A purposive sample of nine PSTs (3 females, 6 males), majoring in PE teacher education, participated in the study. A focus group, observations, and diary reflections were used as data collection methods. Triangulation of the data and a member check process ensured the trustworthiness of the study. Results showed that PSTs were more prepared to teach the TPSR levels of helping others, effort, and autonomy at the elementary level. However, the level of respect was the most challenging level for PSTs to implement. Student misbehavior, planning, communication skills, and environmental factors emerged as practical instructional challenges in applying the TPSR. Finally, participants reported that the TPSR was vital and changed their beliefs regarding PE and contributes to developing values and life skills. Further research should address the concerns and gaps in the levels of respect and effort.

Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), prior research has demonstrated that physical education (PE) teachers may have different reasons to engage in teaching. Although some person-centered studies have identified varied motivational profiles in PE teachers, none of these studies have included the three forms of motivation (i.e., autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and amotivation). This study aims to identify teachers’ motivational profiles, using the three forms of motivation. Moreover, differences between the obtained profiles in terms of job satisfaction and emotional exhaustion were examined. A sample of 107 primary school PE teachers participated. Four distinct motivational profiles were identified: “relatively amotivated,” “somewhat motivated,” “autonomous-controlled motivated,” and “relatively autonomously motivated.” Results showed that the predominantly autonomously motivated PE teachers reported the most adaptive pattern of outcomes. Although PE teachers from the “relatively autonomously motivated” group did not differ in terms of job satisfaction when compared to those in the “autonomous-controlled motivated” group, the former displayed lower values of emotional exhaustion. These findings support SDT in that more motivation is not necessarily better if this additional motivation comes from controlled reasons. These results could raise awareness among school stakeholders about the importance of increasing PE teachers’ autonomous motivation.

Abstract The planning process in every domain represents the first fundamental process; also, the physical and sport activity needs meticulous planning of the activity so that the density of the physical lessons and the efficiency to be at a high level. Our study is based on a questionnaire undertaken by ten physical education teachers from Sibiu City regarding planning the PE activity, the efficiency of the methods used in planning the activity, and other essential problems that occurred in the process of planning the PE activity. The research found out that the planning activity must be changed and adapted to children’s new needs in teachers’ opinion. Also, the documents are often too many and sometimes useless occupying teachers’ time and not being so efficient. The research conclusions are that planning the PE activity is a significant activity and new ways of planning and new curriculum should be added, and many inefficient documents should disappear so that the teachers’ time is used more efficiently.
