Objective: To critically appraise the literature exploring the surgical treatment of degenerative lumbosacral stenosis in dogs. Background: Several surgical procedures to treat degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS) in the dog have been reported, however, definitive criteria for surgical technique preference are currently lacking (1). Evidentiary value and methods: A critical appraisal tool that examined the conduct and reporting of studies on the results of surgical treatment of DLSS was designed and, after a systematic search and screening of the literature, a critical appraisal was performed in 20 papers. Results: Results showed that 18/20 studies included did not clearly report inclusion and exclusion criteria and in 14/20 it was unclear whether consecutive inclusion of participants was applied. 19/20 studies reported age, breed, and sex of the participants, and 13/20 did not report duration and prevalence of clinical signs. In 13/20 studies, it was considered that the condition was not measured in a standard and reliable way. Objective outcome measures were used in 7/20 studies. Conclusion and application: The results demonstrate that there is room for improvement in the conduct and reporting quality of case series so that rigorous data can be generated and analysed, to inform research design, guide clinical practice, and improve veterinary healthcare delivery.

Introduction:Systematic mixed studies reviews are a type of systematic review that combine qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies. They are gaining in popularity due to their potential for providing in-depth answers to complex clinical problems and practical concerns. However, several challenges are encountered in systematic mixed studies reviews because of the heterogeneity of included study designs. One of these challenges is related to the quality appraisal of included studies. To address this challenge, a critical appraisal tool for assessing the quality of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies was developed in 2007: the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). The aim of this project was to strengthen the content validity of the MMAT.Methods:A new version of the MMAT was developed using the results from a literature review on critical appraisal tools and a modified e-Delphi study with methodological experts (n = 73) to identify the core relevant criteria to include in the MMAT.Results:The results of this project and the new version of the MMAT will be presented. The MMAT has three main characteristics. First, it can be used for different study designs since it includes criteria for qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies. Second, the MMAT focuses on the core relevant methodological criteria and has five criteria per category of study. Third, it includes specific criteria for assessing mixed methods studies. Conclusions:Currently, there exists over 500 critical appraisal tools, making the task of selecting the proper tools for use in systematic mixed studies reviews more difficult. The MMAT offers an alternative solution by proposing a unique tool that can appraise the quality of different study designs. Also, by limiting to core criteria, the MMAT can provide a more time efficient assessment.

AbstractThe elderly will experience many changes and problems such as a decrease in biological, psychological, social or economic functions. Thus, it can be affect their quality of life. Quality of life is the level of well-being with events or conditions experienced by the elderly. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that affect the quality of life of the elderly. The study used a scoping review method. The databases used for article search are PROQUEST, and PUBMED. Articles are selected based on the keywords, topics and inclusion and exclusion criteria that have been determined. There were five articles obtained. STROBE critical appraisal tool was used to examine the quality of the articles. The results show that the quality of life score on the physical health and dimension was the lowest compared to the psychological, social and environmental dimensions. The associated factors related to the quality of life of the elderly are including gender, age, education level, and economic status. Keywords: Elderly, Fakctors Associated Quality of Life AbstrakLansia akan mengalami banyak perubahan dan masalah seperti penurunan fungsi biologis, psikologis, sosial atau ekonomi sehingga perubahan pada lansia akan membawa tekanan dan berpengaruh pada kualitas hidupnya.

Multiple recurrent somatic mutations have recently been identified in association with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). This meta-analysis aims to assess the pooled prevalence of TET2 gene mutations among patients with MPN. Six databases (PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Embase) were searched for relevant studies from inception till September 2020, without language restrictions. The eligibility criteria included BCR-ABL-negative MPN adults with TET2 gene mutations. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses explored results among different continents and countries, WHO diagnostic criteria, screening methods and types of MF. Quality assessment was undertaken using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool. The study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020212223). Thirty-five studies were included (n = 5121, 47.1% female). Overall, the pooled prevalence of TET2 gene mutations in MPN patients was 15.5% (95% CI: 12.1–19.0%, I2 = 94%). Regional differences explained a substantial amount of heterogeneity. The prevalence of TET2 gene mutations among the three subtypes PV, ET and MF were 16.8%, 9.8% and 15.7%, respectively. The quality of the included studies was determined to be moderate–high among 83% of the included studies. Among patients with BCR-ABL-negative MPN, the overall prevalence of TET2 gene mutations was 15.5%.

Abstract Background In the context of the volume of mixed- and multi-methods studies in health services research, the present study sought to develop an appraisal tool to determine the methodological and reporting quality of such studies when included in systematic reviews. Evaluative evidence regarding the design and use of our existing Quality Assessment Tool for Studies with Diverse Designs (QATSDD) was synthesised to enhance and refine it for application across health services research. Methods Secondary data were collected through a literature review of all articles identified using Google Scholar that had cited the QATSDD tool from its inception in 2012 to December 2019. First authors of all papers that had cited the QATSDD (n=197) were also invited to provide further evaluative data via a qualitative online survey. Evaluative findings from the survey and literature review were synthesised narratively and these data used to identify areas requiring refinement. The refined tool was subject to inter-rater reliability, face and content validity analyses. Results Key limitations of the QATSDD tool identified related to a lack of clarity regarding scope of use of the tool and in the ease of application of criteria beyond experimental psychological research. The Quality Appraisal for Diverse Studies (QuADS) tool emerged as a revised tool to address the limitations of the QATSDD. The QuADS tool demonstrated substantial inter-rater reliability (k=0.66), face and content validity for application in systematic reviews with mixed, or multi-methods health services research. Conclusion Our findings highlight the perceived value of appraisal tools to determine the methodological and reporting quality of studies in reviews that include heterogeneous studies. The QuADS tool demonstrates strong reliability and ease of use for application to multi or mixed-methods health services research.

Probiotic supplements have been suggested as therapy for a range of health problems in children. This article aims to map the literature around probiotic use in well children, with a focus on prevalence. Using a scoping review methodology, we searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, HealthSource and SAGE, as well as Google and MedNar for grey literature, in July 2018. We followed the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews and used the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool to assess articles for quality. Seven studies including a total of 24,742 children were identified. The prevalence of probiotic use ranged from 4% to 51%. The most common predictors of use were parental probiotic use, and higher maternal education and income. Only one small study reported the strains of probiotics used. Neither the reasons for using probiotics, nor parental perceptions of efficacy were adequately explored. Most parents obtained their information about probiotics from the Internet or family members. Despite the number of children in the community reported to have used probiotics, there are few well-designed and/or well-reported studies of prevalence, and inadequate data concerning the strains of probiotics used, reasons for their use and their perceived efficacy.
