This study examines the relationship between the parents’ educational level and adolescent value orientations, and analyses value differences among adolescents based on the school type. The study involved 437 vocational and grammar school students (194 male or 44.4%; 243 female or 55.6%). The study included mid and late adolescents, with the participants’ age ranging from 14 to 19 (M=2.32, SD= 1.16). A questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic and self-direction questions, and conformity value orientation questions was implemented in the study. The theoretical analysis outlined the research findings related to adolescent values and parental class (education and occupation). The results demonstrated a significant relationship between the mother’s educational level and grammar students’ self-direction. A significant relationship was not found between the parents’ educational level and vocational/grammar students’ degree of conformity. Significant value differences based on the school type were established as vocational students ascribed higher importance to conformity values as opposed to grammar school students. These results suggested that future research could examine the reasons behind vocational students’ inclination towards conformity. Moreover, future studies should turn to parents-child rearing values and teacher’s values, in order to provide a deeper understanding of the value transmission during schooling.

The paper deals with the degree of development of interest in arts in young people, and the justifiability of the current tendency of revision and abbreviation of the art curricula in schools. The research is focused on the structure of interests in various artistic disciplines in secondary school students, and the aim is to determine whether the degree of students? interest depends on the school type, gender and previous experience. The research was conducted on the sample of 555 students from 111 schools, who filled out the questionnaire during one school period. The data were processed by multifactor analysis of variance. There was a higher degree of interest in video and performing arts, which are not present enough in students? surroundings. The girls showed a higher degree of interest in all disciplines, as well as grammar school students compared to their peers from vocational schools. It was shown that the higher the number of programmes attended, the higher the interest in all forms of art. Young people who were completely inactive showed interest in video arts, which serves as an important guideline in the process of moving and socialising them. The results confirm that youth?s interests and needs are discrepant with what is offered to them. It is necessary to introduce various artistic contents as parts of the curriculum, which would make school an integral part of their life, the part that directly influences the development of creativity and increases responsible participation in the society.

Using a multinomial regression and a nationally representative sample of school counselors, we examined the factors influencing the percentage of time school counselors spend on career planning. Findings indicate that the school locale, school type, percentage of non-White students, and the number of full-time counselors were significant predictors of the percentage of hours spent on career planning with students. We discuss implications for practice, training, and future research.

The paper examines the possibility of a more efficient and effective education for a democratic, multicultural society from the perspective of psychological findings concerning personal democratic and antidemocratic predispositions. The starting premise of the research is a that there is a significant connection between the attitude to multiculturalism and acceptance of plurality of ideas. The research aimed to provide an answer to the question whether openness to other cultures is connected with a readiness to accept plurality of ideas. The research was carried out on a suitable sample (N=306) of multicultural groups of grammar school and secondary vocational school students in Subotica in 2005. The results point to a significant positive connection between attitudes to other cultures and acceptance of plurality of ideas (r=.43; p< .01). The school type also affects the degree of acceptance of plurality of ideas. The author concludes that the findings offer support for an integrative approach to education for democracy, while practice in accepting plurality of ideas through different subjects represents a necessary condition for the acceptance of democratic behavior and thinking. This is how the education for democracy can be made more efficient and effective and integration of young people into democratic and multicultural society facilitated. .

Previous research indicates that teen dating violence (TDV) is more common among sexual minority than heterosexual adolescents, with approximately half of female sexual minority adolescents (SMA) endorsing TDV victimization in the last year. In samples of adolescents without regard to sexual orientation, exposure to violent pornography is associated with TDV, but this relationship has not been assessed in female SMA. The current study sample consisted of 10th-grade high school students aged 14–17 who identified as cisgender females ( N = 1,276). Data were collected from a baseline survey prior to the delivery of a sexual assault prevention intervention. Female SMA had 2.54 times the odds (95%CI [1.75, 3.69]) of being exposed to violent pornography and 2.53 times the odds (95%CI [1.72, 3.70)]) of TDV exposure compared to heterosexual girls. Exposure to violent pornography was not associated with involvement in TDV among female SMA, controlling for episodic heavy drinking ( aOR = 2.25, 95%CI [0.88,6.22]). Given the relatively higher rates of violent pornography and TDV exposure among female SMA compared to heterosexual girls, it is critical that sex education curricula address these experiences and meet the needs of adolescents of all sexual orientations. Future research can assess how these TDV interventions might be tailored for female SMA. Although we did not find that exposure to violent pornography was associated with TDV among female SMA, these investigations should be replicated with larger data sets, given that the association between exposure to violent pornography and engagement in TDV was in the expected direction.

This study assessed associations between school nurse workload and student health and academic outcomes. We hypothesized that lower school nurse workload would be associated with better student outcomes, with associations being greater for members of groups who experience health disparities. Our methods entailed secondary analysis of data for New York City school students in kindergarten through 12th grade during 2015–2016 ( N = 1,080,923), using multilevel multivariate regression as the analytic approach. Results demonstrated lower school nurse workload was associated with better outcomes for student participation in asthma education but not chronic absenteeism, early dismissals, health office visits, immunization compliance, academic achievement, or overweight/obesity. Our findings suggest school nurses may influence proximal outcomes, such as participation in disease-related education, more easily than downstream outcomes, such as absenteeism or obesity. While contrary to our hypotheses, results align with the fact that school nurses deliver community-based, population health–focused care that is inherently complex, multilevel, and directly impacted by social determinants of health. Future research should explore school nurses’ perspectives on what factors influence their workload and how they can best impact student outcomes.

Most Indian adolescents, particularly girls and private school students, do not engage in sufficient physical activity (PA). Current understanding of these sociodemographic differences is limited by a focus on exercise, which may not fully capture PA in developing countries. We examined how gender and school type are associated with multiple PA domains and whether associations with gender differ by school type. We randomly selected an equal number of girls and boys (ages 13-16 years) from public and private schools in Southern India ( n = 395). Cross-sectional 24-hour time-use surveys measured PA, which was categorized into three domains: chores, errands, and work; play; and transportation. Negative binomial and logistic regression modeled relative differences in domain-specific PA minutes and the probability of engaging in ≥60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), respectively, in the prior 24 hours. Girls and boys were equally likely to meet MVPA recommendations. However, girls spent twice as much active time completing chores, errands, and work (rate ratio = 1.98, 95% confidence interval = [1.32, 2.98]), while boys spent twice as much active time playing (rate ratio = 2.11, 95% confidence interval = [1.23, 3.62]). Public and private school girls spent more active time in chores, errands, and work than boys; however, gender differences were greater among public school students ( p value for interaction <.05). Although comparable MVPA levels for girls and boys are beneficial for physical health, girls may gain fewer cognitive, social, and emotional benefits associated with play. Additional research may clarify why the gendered burden of household responsibilities was greater among public school students. School-based programs to engage girls in active play may help reduce inequities.

This study was to investigate the effects of a process-based approach to writing interview articles using class-wide social network site (SNS) on the writing abilities and self-esteem of middle school students with intellectual disabilities. It also aimed at investigating these effects on attitudes of the students’ peers who were interviewed. A multiple probe baseline design across participants was employed to assess the writing abilities of three students with intellectual disabilities. A one-group pre- and posttest design was used to examine the changes in the attitudes of peers toward the students with intellectual disabilities. The intervention improved the writing abilities of the three participants along with increases of their self-esteem. The participants’ peers in the inclusive classrooms also showed positive changes in their attitudes toward the students with intellectual disabilities. This study has significance in that teaching interview article writing using class-wide SNS was effective not only in promoting the writing skills of students with intellectual disabilities but in improving their peers’ attitudes toward them. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to ascertain the effect of age, gender and educational level on customer evaluations of the design characteristics of fitting rooms/dressing rooms, such as size, levels of illumination, number of hangers, materials and opening types of doors in retail clothing stores. In the light of these results, the study aims to increase the satisfaction of the customers in retail stores. Design/methodology/approach – These evaluations were analysed according to the demographic characteristics of consumers, such as age, gender and educational level. Since activities in fitting rooms require a certain level of privacy, the features that affected privacy were also considered in this study. The analysis was carried out with research designed for users of fitting rooms in Ankara, Turkey. Findings – Results indicated that demographic characteristics of the customers affected their evaluation of fitting rooms. The statistically significant results between evaluations of customers and their demographic backgrounds were determined. In these analyses, problems emerged due to usage of fitting rooms. Most of the problems complained about were an insufficient number of hangers, lack of mirrors, lack of sitting units, small-sized rooms and poorly illuminated rooms. Moreover, the results showed that customers preferred a totally closed panel door for privacy. Originality/value – This paper reveals a significant relationship between design characteristics of fitting rooms and customer evaluations of fitting rooms. The results of the study suggest that retailers and designers may be able to easily make stores more attractive for customers when installing fitting rooms.

The aim of the study was to analyze step counts of middle school students in structured and unstructured physical education classes (PE) according to age, gender, and school type. Data were collected on a sample of 74 students, 40 7th and 34 8th grade students recruited from private and public middle schools. Omron HJ-112 pedometers were used in this study to obtain step counts. There were statistically significant differences between boys and girls in the step counts in both structured and unstructured PE. A significant difference was observed between school types in step counts during structured PE in both genders, while no significant difference was found for unstructured PE. Significant difference was found between step counts of only boys of different grades in unstructured PE. Boys made more steps than girls both in structured and unstructured PE. In structured PE, 7th grade boys reached a higher number of steps than 8th grade boys.
