Sirtanio Rural Agriculture Training Center (P4S) is an organic farming training institution in Banyuwangi. The technological innovations introduced by P4S are outlined in the form of Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) to make it easier for farmers to adopt organic farming systems. The purpose of this study was to determine: (1) the level of application of GAP SOP on organic red rice farming farmers participating in Sirtanio P4S in Banyuwangi, (2) the factors that influence farmers decisions in the implementation of organic red rice farming GAP SOP for farmers participating in Sirtanio P4S in Banyuwangi, and (3) the correlation between the application of GAP SOP on organic rice farming of participant farmersin Sirtanio P4S in Banyuwangi towards organic red rice production. The determination of the study area uses the purposive method, namely in the Village Sumberarum District Songgon Banyuwangi Regency East Java, Indonesia. The research method uses descriptive and analytical methods. The sampling technique for this study is total sampling. The data retrieval uses interview, observation and document analysis methods. The results showed that (1) the level of application of organic farming in Songgon District as a whole was high (64,52%); (2) the factors that significantly influence the decision making of organic red rice farmers in adopting organic GAP SOP as recommended were age, income, and land ownership status; and (3) there was a significant relationship between the application of organic GAP SOP to rice production organic red in Sumberarum Village.

This study analysed the factors affecting the adoption of organic rice production in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaire completed by 108 farmers: (58 organic rice farmers and 50 non-organic rice farmers) in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. A t-test was employed to investigate the differences in the demographics of organic and non-organic rice farmers, and percentage mean, and standard deviation was used to describe farmers’ attitudes. Logistic regression was employed to investigate factors influencing organic rice adoption, educational level, and farm size were significantly different between the organic and non-organic rice farmers. Education (positive), farming experience (positive), age of household head (negative) and farm size (negative) had highly significant (p ≤ 0.01) influences on organic farming adoption. The farmers’ attitude toward environmental concern was the most important reason for adopting organic rice farming. This research identified the factors affecting the adoption of organic rice farming; this information can be used to encourage farmers to practice organic rice farming in the targeted organic rice area in Thailand. In addition, the farmers’ attitudes toward organic farming systems could be used to help support farmers practicing organic rice farming. The study was conducted in Sahibganj district of Jharkhand. There are 9 blocks in Sahibganj district. Five blocks are selected for study, namely Sahibganj, Rajmahal, Barharwa, Taljhari and Udhwa. All these block cultivated paddy as a main crop. Using simple random sampling technique, twenty five farmers were selected from each of the five selected villages from each block, making total 125 respondents for the study. The study has clearly brought out that the major constraints perceived by farmers were technical constraints related to non availability of inputs at time, financial constraints related to high cost of inputs, and extension constraints related to lack of training on new production technology of paddy. In order to improve rice production and overcome the perceived constraints, rice growers suggested the construction and regular maintenance of adequate rice farming infrastructure, particularly those related to irrigation and drainage, improvement of extension system through training, demonstration, information through different channels), availability of inputs at reasonable price and the provision of crop insurance.

Rice farming systems (RFSs) in southern Mozambique are very heterogeneous and diversified, which has implications for smallholders’ adoption of each RFS, as well as on rice production and productivity in the region. In this regard, it is important to understand: (i) which RFS typologies can be leveraged to improve rice production and productivity; (ii) the drivers for smallholder farmers’ decisions to adopt an RFS; and (iii) which policies/incentives could enhance existing RFSs. The present study was based on surveys of 341 smallholder rice farmers in the Chókwè Irrigation Scheme (CIS), southern Mozambique. Data on the productivity of rice, size of the herd, and total other crop types were used to frame the RFS typologies. A multinomial logit model (MLM) and multiple linear regression (MLR) were applied to determine the driver for each RFS, and predict the constraints for production and yield. Based on cluster analysis, four typologies of RFSs were identified: the subsistence farming system (FS), specialised rice FS, mixed crops FS, and rice–livestock FS. Farms with longer experience reported applying more fertiliser and seedlings per unit hectare. The availability of labour increased the likelihood of adopting the mixed crops FS and rice–livestock FS. Older households were more likely to adopt the subsistence FS, and live closer to the farming fields. Yield of rice was positively associated with inputs such as fertilisers, pesticides, and seedlings, as well as years of experience of the household. Our results suggest that smallholder farmers need more assistance and technical support to identify and adopt more productive and less costly RFSs in this region.

The rising of semi-organic rice farming in Watukebo Village is due to the doubthness in implementing the semi-organic system. Semi-organic rice farm system require considerable cost savings compared to conventional rice and in the short-term, semi-organic rice production will generally decline. The study was conducted in the Watukebo Village Banyuwangi Regency intentionally. The sample are taken by using total sampling method for semi-organic rice farmers and quota sampling technique for conventional rice farmers. The data used are primary data and secondary data. The Tools of analysis data used are income analysis, R/C ratio analysis, and Cobb-Douglas production function analysis. The results showed that : (1) there was no significant difference between the average income of semi-organic rice farmers and conventional rice farmers, (2) there was no significant difference between the average of cost efficiency of semi-organic rice farming with conventional rice farmers in Watukebo of Blimbingsari, and (3) factors that influence the production of semi organic rice significantly are land area, organic fertilizer, and urea fertilizer. Factors affecting the conventional rice production significantly are the number of seeds and labors.

The purposes of this research were to determine the performance of organic and anorganic farming systems in wetland rice cultivation, rice farmers’ perception, the related factors to farmers' perception, the differences in rice farmers’ perceptions, and the constraints faced in that applications in Pajaresuk and Pujodadi Village. The data collection was conducted in November - December 2017. The research method used was census. The number of organic and anorganic rice farmers sampled were 35 farmers. The data was analyzed by descriptive analysis, Spearman rank correlation and the Mann-Whitney test. The results of this research show that the performance of organic and anorganic rice farming were land processing, seeding, planting, pest and disease controlling, fertilizating, irrigating, and harvesting. The differences performance of organic and anorganic rice farming were in seeding, pests and diseases controlling, and fertilizing. The rice farmers' perception to organic farming systems was quite good. The related factors to farmers' perception were social interaction, community support, and farmers' interests. There were no significant differences between organic farmers’ perceptions and the anorganic farmers’ perceptions. The constraint faced in the application of organic farming system was the difficulty of maintenance in cultivation, while in the application of anorganic farming systemwas the high costs, but the selling price was relatively low. Key words: anorganic rice, organic rice, perception

ABSTRAKPerubahan iklim mensyaratkan kapasitas beradaptasi yang memadai dari petani karena pengelolaan SUT padi sawah sangat bergantung pada daya dukung iklim. Musim menjadi tidak menentu dan cuaca sulit diprediksi. Petani mulai kesulitan menentukan awal dan komoditas tanam, sementara serangan organisme pengganggu tanaman (OPT), banjir, dan kekeringan sebagai dampak negatif dari perubahan iklim semakin sering terjadi. Melalui survey terhadap 96 petani, penelitian ini menakar kapasitas beradaptasi perubahan iklim petani padi sawah di daerah pertanaman padi di dataran rendah, sedang, dan tinggi yang pernah menjadi wilayah percontohan program pengembangan kapasitas adaptasi perubahan iklim. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kapasitas adaptasi petani padi sawah masih rendah dan memengaruhi tingkat penerapan adaptasi perubahan iklim mereka. Disarankan untuk dilakukan evaluasi terhadap strategi program-progran sejenis melalui penelitian mengenai faktor-faktor penentu kapasitas adaptasi perubahan iklim petani padi sawah.Kata kunci: kapasitas adaptasi, padi sawah, perubahan iklim, petani    ABSTRACTClimate change requires adequate adaptation capability of farmers as the management of rice farming systems which is highly dependent on climate carrying a previously considered stable. Through a survey of 96 farmers, this study measured the adaptive capacity to climate change of rice farmers in the lowland, medium and highland rice cultivation areas as pilot zone in which improvement program in climate change adaptation has been established. The result shows rice farmers adaptive capacity is considered low and affects their adaptation level to climate change. This study aims to analyzethe influence of the rice organic farmers’ entrepreneurship on the farming performance and identify the influence of farming technique or activities on the farming performance. This study used a survey method. The study was conducted in Manonjaya and Salawu sub-districts, Tasikmalaya regency, August until November 2019 which was chosen using purposive sampling technique applied to 50 samples. The respondents who were organic rice farmers were recruited using multistage purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with WarpPLS 2.0. The result show that the entrepreneurship significantly and positively affects farming techniques. Entrepreneurship has significant and positive influence on the organic rice farming performance. In addition, farming technique is significantly and positively influential on the organic rice farming performance.

Low profit from most staple food production in Nigeria, have continued to discourage the teaming unemployed Nigerian youth from taking up farming as a business. Therefore, this study analyzes the cost and economic returns in Ebonyi State rice production. This study made used of simple random sampling techniques to select 242 rice farmers. The study employed the use of structured questionnaire in its primary data collection. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (Percentages, Frequency, Standard deviation and Mean), Net Rice Farming Income (NRFI) and Returns/US Dollar Invested (RUSDI). The result from the analysis reveals that rice production is profitable in Ebonyi state. The Net Rice Farming Income (NRFI) obtained by the farmers in Ebonyi state were $900.10 US Dollar per hectare while the return on investment obtained by them were $2.90 US Dollar per hectare. Therefore, unemployed youth in Nigeria should be encourage through provision of rice farming grant or loan by the government. In addition, adequate training on improve technology should be conducted by the government agency for the rice farmers.

AbstractProfitability of rice production in different production systems in Ebonyi State, Nigeria was evaluated. Rice is critical for food security in Nigeria, hence, farmers need to make appropriate choices of rice production systems to optimize production and ensure an adequate domestic supply. This study used 2015 survey data from rice farming households. Rice farmers in swamp, lowland and upland rice production systems showed variability in profit. Swamp production systems had the highest return per hectare (29.37%) followed by lowland production systems (20.10%) and upland production systems (13.03%). Poor access to production credit and climate change were constraints to rice production in the area. Rice production using the swamp production system is profitable and would ensure increased production and higher returns to the farmers. It is recommended that farmers should form cooperative groups to enable them to pool resources together to boost their production.

The paper undertook an economic analysis of Ofada rice production in five prominent rice growing areas of Ogun State.  A two stage purposive sampling technique was employed to select a total of 120 rice farmers from five local government areas which are major areas known for Ofada rice production in the state. Primary data were collected for the study through structured questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) among rice farmers groups in the study area. Analytical tools adopted for the study included frequency, percentages, gross margin analysis and profitability ratios. Results of the analysis showed that majority of Ofada rice producers in the study area are male (73.33%). In terms of age, more than half of the respondents fell within the age range of 41 -50 years (63.33%) these farmers were young and within their active productive lives. Results of the distribution of respondents by annual income in the study area revealed that majority of the respondents (60.83%) obtained an income of between ₦201,000 and ₦400,000.00 per hectare.  However, 22.50% of the respondents obtained an income of less than ₦200,000.00 per hectare. The gross ratio, operating ratio, return per naira invested and profitability index were calculated to be 0.95, 0.80, 1.90 and 1.80 respectively. The gross margin of rice production per hectare was also estimated to be ₦222,020.00. All these indicate overall profitability of the enterprise. However, an average low yield of 2.5 tonnes per hectare was recorded due to constraints encountered during production. Some of the identified constraints in the study area are lack of capital (25.83%), lack of tractor for land clearing (10.83%), lack of good farm roads (16.67%), and inadequate processing and storage facilities (11.67%). It is then recommended that access to adequate capital, mechanical equipment and other incentives through farmers’ cooperatives and government aid for construction of farm roads could help increase rice production in the area and this will in turn help Nigeria to achieve a much desired self-sufficiency in rice production.
