The principles and criteria for classifying factors that affect the power consumption of a train with an electric locomotive are formulated. Based on the analysis of the energy balance, the interconversions of various types of energy and the energy diagrams that characterize them in different modes of train movement are considered. The analysis made it possible to identify the factors that affect the power consumption of the train in all modes of movement, and evaluate them according to various criteria. A classification of factors affecting the train power consumption is proposed, which allows us to justify the correct method of accounting for each factor, as well as to develop measures to reduce the influence of individual factors on the train energy consumption.

The paper considers the issue of organization of control of electric power consumption by electric rolling stock by visualizing information on the monitor of the driver's console. With the correct analysis of information coming on board of the electric rolling stock, the train driver makes correction of the driving modes of the train in terms of energy efficiency. In this paper, to visualize information on the efficiency of power consumption by an electric rolling stock on the route, the authors propose using an indicator diagram using a green, white, and orange gradient. The variant of output of the final information on the efficiency of power consumption of electrical energy by an electric rolling stock both within the distances operated by the locomotive crews and within the hauls to the monitor of the driver's console is presented. One of the main advantages of using the technology of visual control of electric power consumption by electric rolling stock is the promptness of correction of decision-making on the rational use of energy resources, the identification of objective reasons for the overspending of energy, and the identification of reference results for the driving of trains. The prospect of development of the research topic is the approbation and implementation of the proposed technical and technological solutions in the production, which will reduce the specific consumption and unproductive electric power losses within the boundaries of the railway accounting zones.

Through additional processing of the modern movement parameter recorders data of the DC electric locomotive 2ES6 the article first presents the results of the actual consumption of electricity for own needs and the proportion of these costs from the consumption of trains traction is determined, which in terms of operational depot is difficult to implement. The estimation of influencing factors on the energy consumption for own needs of 2ES6 series electric locomotives is made. As a result it was found that the internal energy consumption is influenced by such factors as rolling stock mass, axle load and environment temperature. Statistic models were made to normalize internal electricity consumption and their quality estimation was fulfilled. It is found that the remainders of the multiple regression equation, which take the above factors into account, obey the normal distribution law, indicating the adequacy of their further use to assess the energy efficiency of the 2ES6 series DC electric locomotives auxiliary equipment. The use of regression models will allow to identify electric locomotives with auxiliary equipment with low energy efficiency and to send them to unscheduled repairs in time to restore the required technical condition.

In railway traction, the definition of “electromagnetic field” is functionally connected to the concept of the reactive power consumed by the electric rolling stock, and characterized by the running and standing electromagnetic waves in the space of the inter-substation zones from the site of the AC traction system. Such a definition is established and theoretically justified by the theory of electromagnetic fields. This article uses the methodology of this theory, in particular, a method for power balance estimation in electromagnetic fields based on Maxwell’s equations, as well as methods for the analysis of running and standing electromagnetic waves based on the theory of reflection, propagation and transmission of plane harmonic waves. The research considers the regularities of standing electromagnetic waves in the space of inter-substation zones of electric traction systems, which occur due to the incomplete reflection of incident waves from the contact wire and metal parts of the roof surface and the frontal part of the body of the electric rolling stock. The flow of electricity to the roof surface and the frontal part of the body of an electric locomotive is considered. The possibility of using existing methods to reduce wave reflections and thereby to effectively compensate for reactive power in the space of inter-substation zones is discussed.

The international practices in organizing the energy consumption control of electric rolling stock are analyzed. As a result, it was concluded that currently the issue of organizing the energy consumption control of electric rolling stock is mainly solved by using analytical methods. These methods are based on designing the simulation models, which are usually based on the Pontryagin maximum principle. However, considering the development of recording systems for motion parameters of electric rolling stock, as well as other automated systems of Russian Railways, it seems promising to develop and study artificial intelligence methods and algorithms for solving real-time monitoring issues of electric rolling stock energy consumption. It was also determined that the most modern motion parameter recorders have a number of significant drawbacks from the data analysis point of view. Such drawbacks include insufficient data and their low reliability, lack of linking the recorded data to trips and locomotive teams, the impossibility of choosing a constant interval for recording measurement results. Moreover, there is also high probability of errors when recording data on the cartridge, lack of GPS/GLONASS satellite navigation system, lack of wireless data transmission, imperfection of software and inconvenience of exporting data from a cartridge file and its incompleteness. In order to test the energy efficiency assessment of electric rolling stock within the limits of arbitrary energy tracking areas, the Corresponding software was developed on the basis of data from the motion parameters recorders. However, developing the new complex automated system is required for the full implementation of the proposed consumption tracking method. Such system should combine the entire set of measured parameters, both for electric rolling stock and for the traction power supply system.

The paper considers methods of improving technical and economic indicators of direct current electric rolling stock. The authors propose a scheme of electric drive with pulse converters that are controlled by instantaneous values of armature and exciting currents. The scheme provides the realization of regenerative and resistance braking on almost the entire speed range. The paper also presents frequency characteristics of converters at speed from 5 to 100 km/h and proposes a scheme of direct current electric locomotive with pulse regulation of voltage on three connections of traction motors. Moreover, the authors discuss a structure of autonomous voltage inverter with group switching and reduced number of fully controlled semiconductor devices and present methods to prevent wheelspin through changing their load on rails and excitement of traction motors.

Objective: To identify the influence of electromagnetic interference of various origins on the func- tioning of electronic components of control systems in electric rolling stock (ERS) and radio commu- nication devices, and the effect of electromagnetic fields (EMF) on humans. To carry out experi- mental studies of the ERS EMF characteristics taken as source data, allowing to assess the need to take appropriate actions to ensure electromagnetic safety. One of such measures is the optimal ar- rangement of electric equipment in the driver’s cabin of an electric locomotive or electric train, which will make it possible to achieve the minimum electric and magnetic field strength values under specified conditions. Methods: Direct measurement of the electromagnetic field characteristics in the driver’s cabin of a new 2ES-5 (2ЭС-5) AC electric locomotive (joint production of Transmashhol- ding JSC, Russia, and Alstom, France), as well as on a 2ES4K (2ЭС4К) DC electric locomotive (driver’s cabin, high-voltage chamber, electric locomotive roof) and an ED4M (ЭД4М) DC electric train (dri- ver’s cabin, train car). In the driver’s cabin, measurements were carried out near the working appa- ratus, near the driver’s and assistant's seats and at frequencies for which the maximum permissible levels have been set. Results: The magnetic field strengths (as having the greatest effect on the func- tioning of the electronic components of the ERS control systems and on the person) in the driver’s cabin of electric locomotives and electric trains were measured at different currents under the fol- lowing conditions: starting, traction, braking in the high-voltage chamber and on the electric locomo- tive roof. Practical importance: The given electromagnetic field characteristics do not exceed the specifications set forth in the regulatory documents of the Russian Federation. However, when trains move, there are bursts of EMF strength values due to transient processes in the power supply sys- tem: on DC ERS, the magnetic field strength in the driver’s cabin reached 100 A/m, the electric field strength — 8,5 kV/m, magnetic induction on the DC electric locomotive roof — 400 μT. These values exceed the maximum permissible levels and require the relevant actions to ensure electromagnetic safety.

ter reaching the maximum voltage at the 4th control zone of the rectifier-inverter converter of an AC electric locomotive, a further increase in speed is achieved by connecting the field attenuation system (FA) of traction electric motors (TEM). All domestic electric locomotives use the FA TEM system of the inductively active type with step switching. However, it has drawbacks, one of them is that step switching causes speed losses and slows down the acceleration of electric rolling stock (ERS). By 2025, the goal is to increase the speed of freight trains, which will increase freight turnover on the railway network [1]. One solution is to improve the ERS. In this regard, it is proposed to improve the standard FA TEM system of an electric locomotive by using IGBT transistors, which allow smooth regulation of the excitation current. In the article, using the graphical method of the RM, a curve of the train speed is constructed, which proves that the smooth control of the electric locomotive FA TEM allows you to quickly reach the maximum permissible speed of the electric locomotive on the section and to move at a higher speed in the ascent than with step-by-step regulation. The simulation of the 3ES5K series electric locomotive in the «Cortes» software complex on the Winter - Irkutsk-Sortirovochny section was also carried out, which proved that with the smooth regulation of the FA TEM, the technical speed of the ERS increases by at least 2,5 km/h.

Regenerative braking is one of the most important energy-saving resources on electric rolling stock (EPS) of railways and feasibility of its use is confirmed by a rich half-century history. The development of the recovery mode begins with the release of the experimental AC electric locomotive of the VL61 series № 012 and continues with the release of the modern series of electric locomotives 2 (3, 4) ES5K and EP1v/i. The use of recuperation allows you to achieve significant energy savings, to ensure the safety of driving heavy trains on the track profile with long descents. In the regenerative braking mode, the EPS has rigid braking characteristics, ensuring maintenance of constant train speed, increasing the technical speed of the train and capacity of the railway section. This article presents the results of mathematical modeling of operation of an AC electric locomotive in the regenerative braking mode using a standard rectifier-inverter converter (RIC) and presence of ballast resistor blocks (BRB) in the power circuit, and using a promising RIC based on IGBT transistors, for which a method for implementing regenerative braking on AC electric locomotives without the use of BRB in the anchor circuit of traction electric motors is developed, with the help of which it is possible to increase the amount of electricity given to the contact network, as well as to expand the area of braking characteristics of the electric locomotive.
