The space of “the eternal house” in the creative history of M.A. Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”

One of the important questions in bulgakovian studies is connected with the space of “the eternal house”, peace, which the master had deserved. The author of this paper try to understand the writer’s intention based on a textual analysis of the novel. In our work, we rely on the system of editions of the novel that we have established and its main text, reflecting the last creative will of the author to the fullest extent [1]. The line “The Master – Margarita” is outlined in drafts of the 1931 novel and is developed in its second edition (1932–1936). The third (1936) and fourth (1937) editions are incomplete — they don’t have the episodes considered in this paper. Therefore, our study uses the texts of drafts of 1931, the second, fifth (last handwritten, 1937–1938) and the sixth (final, 1938–1940) editions of the novel. The draft texts are conveyed by dynamic transcription, which will make visible the process of writer’s work on the creation and allow us to see the formation of the author’s intention. Graphic conventions are used for this: a piece of text crossed out by the writer — [text]; an insert during the writing process — text; an insert crossed out — [text]; a later insert — {text}; a later insert crossed out — {text}; a conjecture — <text>; reliability of the transmitted author’s text — <sic>; the end of a page and the transition to the next one are indicated by two straight vertical lines ||.

This article is devoted to the development of the space of light and darkness in M.A. Bulgakov’s novel «The Master and Margarita». The author explores the different stages and artistic devices of Bulgakov’s work on these images in the context of the creative history of the novel. The article, based on an extensive archival research in the Manuscript Collection of Russian State Library, follows the development of the space of light and darkness through a textual analysis of the whole corpus of manuscripts of this novel


This article explores the XX―XXI centuries scientific critical investigations devoted to the study of the Ukrainian writer`s Hryhoriy Tiutiunnyk creativity. Researchers of the 1960-1980s (P. Havrilov, Yu. Barabash, L. Volovets, etc.) keep focus primarily on revealing the relationship between the personality of the writer as a Soviet patriot and his work, as well as an analysis of such types of person represented by the writer as a Soviet man, a peasant man, a man-leader, a man-warrior and patriot-one, etc. Notwithstanding the prominent ideology of this period literary exploration, a number of important aspects related to the author`s style, problem content of works, peculiarity of the ideological and aesthetic evolution of the writer, originality of the artistic reproduction of the author's concept were analyzed. Most scholars focus on the analysis of the novel “Vir”. M. Lohvinenko, K. Volynsky, B. Chip, L. Volovets, I. Semenchuk, Y. Barabash draw attention to the lyricism of the narrative in the novel and to the peculiarities of scenery images as a way of revealing character`s inner world. L. Volovets P. Havrilov, I. Semenchuk emphasize the psychological representation of characters images of the novel. Y. Badzo, L. Volovets, K. Volynsky and P. Serdyuk distinguish the motive of finding the truth in the writer`s works. The aforementioned researchers place emphasis on the analysis of war factor as a mean of revealing characters` personalities in the novel “Vir”. M. Lohvynenko, K. Volinskyi, B. Chip, L. Volovets, S. Lisovska, I. Semenchuk, Y. Barabash draw attention to the narrative lyricism of author`s work. L. Volovets, P. Gavrilov, I. Semenchuk emphasize the psychological nature of character image in the novel. Recently, S. Lisovsky's works on poetry of his works have appeared. As well as O. Nezhyvyi, who outlines the history of novel publication and carry out a textual analysis of the first print, the modern version and the main text. It is proved that a comprehensive study of Hryhoriy Tiutiunnyk`s work of has not been accomplished yet.

Kazuo Ishiguro has suggested that his work of medieval fantasy, The Buried Giant (2015), draws on a “quasi-historical” King Arthur, in contrast to the Arthur of legend. This article reads Ishiguro’s novel against the medieval work that codified the notion of an historical King Arthur, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain (c. 1139). Geoffrey’s History offered a largely fictive account of the British past that became the most successful historiographical phenomenon of the English Middle Ages. The Buried Giant offers an interrogation of memory that calls such “useful” constructions of history into question. The novel deploys material deriving from Geoffrey’s work while laying bear its methodology; the two texts speak to each other in ways sometimes complementary, sometimes deconstructive. That Ishiguro’s critique can be applied to Geoffrey’s History points to recurrent strategies of history-making, past and present, whereby violence serves as a mechanism for the creation of historical form.

Introduction. The objective necessity of the appearance of this code of laws for the pharmaceu-tical industry is shown. The proofs of the readiness of all branches of pharmacy to develop the text of the Pharmacopoeia, taking into account modern international requirements for scientific and practical activities in the development, manufacture and production of medicines, are presented.Text. The work presents the history of the creation of the VII edition of the State Pharmacopoeia of the USSR. The sequence of steps for the formation of the Pharmacopoeia Commission, the stages of its activities for the preparation of the updated text of the Pharmacopoeia is described, a detailed analysis of the prepared text is given in comparison with the current Pharmacopoeia of the VI edition (1910). Various points of view of experts on the content of the main text are cited, which served as the basis for the new document. The role of domestic scien-tists-pharmacists in the development and publication of the VII edition of the State Pharmacopoeia of the USSR is evaluated.Conclusion. The role of the Pharmacopoeia Commission in the timely development of the text of the new edition of the State Pharmacopoeia is emphasized. The fact of its wide discussion among experts and the novelty of the approach, which gave a powerful impetus to the development of the entire industry, are noted.

The article is devoted to the history of the creation of the ballet "The White-Haired Girl", which was included among the "exemplary productions" during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The plot of the ballet, based on class contradictions between landowners and peasants, has folklore origins: first it appeared in the novel, then the first national Chinese opera was created, later adapted for cinema and became the basis for the ballet. The ballet "The White-Haired Girl" was commissioned by Chinese leadership. It includes the historical facts of the class struggle and shows the formation of a personality ready to resist exploitation and fight for freedom for all. The ballet's music, composed by Yan Jinxuan, also includes revolutionary folk songs and numbers taken from the opera of the same name. Compared to the opera, the ballet enhances revolutionary features in the characters. The choreography harmoniously combines classical ballet pas with the characteristics of Chinese folk dance and martial arts. The ballet "The White-Haired Girl" is performed with ongoing success since its inception in 1965 to the present day and is rightly considered a "red classic" with a high ideology and artistry.

The data of this study were taken from an Indonesia novel entitled ‘Tambora’ by Agus Sumbogo (2015) as a research objective caused some factors. First, ‘Tambora’ novel telling us the beginning of Lesley journey to return the precious things of Tambora’s people. Second, ‘Tambora’ novel describe the story and phenomena that exist before Mount Tambora was erupted. Third, ‘Tambora’ novel related to the destruction of the third sultanate people that is located close around Mount Tambora caused by Dutch confront Devide et Impera. The writer have analyzed the problems in the novel, such as structures, history, and social aspect of the third sulatanate which exist in Tambora area. The theory used in this study was structural theory applied to analyze the characters, especially the element of characterization, plot, and setting. Moreover, this study also presented the history revealed before Mount Tambora was erupted. The writer also uses the sociology of literature theory taken from the book by Burhan Nurgiyantoro 2005. The method used in collecting the data was literature review method with continuation technique in form of note taking technique. Afterwards, the method used in this research is descriptive analysis to describe the result related to the data that have been analyzed. Characterization in this novel can be divided into two, major character and additional characters. The major character in ‘Tambora’ novel named Lesley and additional characters are Uma, Jeff, and Wayan. The plot can be divided into three, they were beginning, middle, and an end. The plot used in Tambora novel is mixing plot. Afterward, the setting is divided into three, place, time, and social of story. This study also illustrates the history of the eruption of Mount Tambora either in fact or fiction. Based on sociology of literature theory, there are found some aspcets revealed in the Tambora novel, that is good and bad moral aspects, political aspect Devide et Impera, economic aspects of Tambora people,  social aspect of the good and bad sultanates relations, and cultural aspect to do the tradition that almost extinguished.

This article investigates the forgotten achievements of Władysław Natanson (1864–1937) related to the creation of Bose-Einstein statistics. The introductory part of the article presents considerations regarding the methodology of history and the history of exact sciences, and then the divergent research perspectives that can be taken in the description of the history of Bose-Einstein statistics, as well as the author’s integrated approach to this issue, which eliminates the disadvantages of these divergent views. This integrated approach is then used to describe the achievements of Władysław Natanson related to the creation of Bose-Einstein statistics. These achievements are presented against the background and in the context of discussions which – relatively sporadically – took place among various groups of researchers: historians and philosophers of science, physicists, sociologists of scientific knowledge in the 20th and 21st centuries. These discussions have now been reordered here. They are followed by a presentation of the complete list of Natanson’s publications regarding the subject. Also shown is his strategy to quote reliably the bibliography with regard to the explanation of the distribution of blackbody radiation and related issues. Additionally, a list of scientists who knew Natanson’s publications has been supplemented in the article and the precursorship of Natanson’s achievements is explained. This is followed by a rebuttal of many erroneous or simplified statements about him and his achievements. The already well-known terminological conventions have been recalled: “Bose statistics” and “Bose-Einstein statistics”, as well as recently introduced: “Planck-Bose statistics” (1984), “Natanson’s statistics” (1997)”, “Natanson-Bose-Einstein statistics” (2005), “Planck-Natanson-Bose-Einstein statistics” (2011), and “Natanson statistics” (2013). New terminological conventions have been introduced: “Boltzmann-Planck-Natanson statistics” and “Boltzmann-Planck-Natanson-Bose-Einstein statistics”. A side effect of this research is a discovery that Robert K. Merton – the author of the label ‘Matthew effect’ – chose the name of the effect using erroneous premises and the effect should therefore be named after its actual discoverer. The article is accompanied by four appendixes: the first presents reflections on the methodology of historiography and historiography of exact sciences, the second – a commentary on the use of the terms: “Bose statistics”, “Bose-Einstein statistics”, “Einstein-Bose statistics” and “Planck-Bose statistics”, the third – a very important letter by Max Planck to Władysław Natanson (of 25 January 1913), and the fourth – the excerpts of two letters from Sommerfeld to Rubinowicz (of 1 October 1919 and 1 November 1919). W części wstępnej artykułuwskazano rozbieżne perspektywy badawcze, jakie przyjmowano w opisie historii statystyki Bosego-Einsteina, a także autorskie zintegrowane ujęcie tego zagadnienia, które eliminuje wady tych rozbieżnych perspektyw. Wspomniane zintegrowane ujęcie zastosowano następnie do opisania osiągnięć Władysława Natansona (1864–1937), związanych z powstaniem statystyki Bosego-Einsteina. Dokonania Natansona przedstawiono na tle i w kontekście dyskusji, jakie toczyły się (stosunkowo sporadycznie) wśród różnych grup badaczy: historyków i filozofów nauki, fizyków, socjologów wiedzy naukowej w XX i XXI w. Dyskusje uporządkowano oraz przedstawiono kompletną listę publikacji Natansona dotyczących omawianego zagadnienia. Wskazano także strategię rzetelnego cytowania przez Natansona bibliografii dotyczącej wyjaśnienia rozkładu promieniowania ciała doskonale czarnego i pokrewnych zagadnień; uzupełniono listę naukowców, którzy znali publikacje Natansona; skorygowano wiele błędnych lub uproszczonych stwierdzeń na temat Natansona i znaczenia jego publikacji, wyjaśniono kwestię prekursorstwa jego osiągnięć etc. Przypomniano już znane konwencje terminologiczne: „statystyka Bosego” i „statystyka Bosego-Einsteina”, jak również niedawno wprowadzone: „statystyka Plancka-Bosego” (1984), „statystyka Natansona” (1997, 2013), „statystyka Natansona-Bosego-Einsteina” (2005) oraz „statystyka Plancka-Natansona-Bosego-Einsteina” (2011). Wprowadzono nowe konwencje terminologiczne: „statystyka Boltzmanna-Plancka-Natansona” i „statystyka Boltzmanna-Plancka-Natansona-Bosego-Einsteina”. Skutkiem pobocznym tych badań jest odkrycie, iż socjolog Robert K. Merton – autor określenia „efekt św. Mateusza” – wybrał tę nazwę, posługując się błędnymi przesłankami i dlatego należy nazywać ten efekt nazwiskiem jego faktycznego odkrywcy. Do artykułu dołączone są cztery dodatki: pierwszy – przedstawia rozważania z zakresu metodologii historii i historii nauk ścisłych, drugi – komentarz dotyczący użycia terminów: „statystyka Bosego”, „statystyka Bosego-Einsteina”, „statytyska Einsteina-Bosego” oraz „statystyka Plancka-Bosego, trzeci – bardzo ważny list Maxa Plancka do Władysława Natansona z 25 stycznia 1913 r, a czwarty – fragmenty dwóch listów Sommerfelda do Rubinowicza z 1 października 1919 i 1 listopada 1919.

A censor history is one of the most important issues in the textual study of Kulish’s novel “The Black Council”. However, this problem has never been considered before by the Ukrainian scholars, and even more general issue, i.e. “Kulish and the Censorship”, was not involved much into the field of research. This paper gives an introduction to this topic shedding some light on the censor history of “The Black Council”.Relations between Kulish and the tsarist censorship in different times were ambiguous which was caused by several reasons. The first one was individual approach of the censors to his works which might be connected, in particular, with the trial of Saints Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood (1847). Other reason was general persecution of the Ukrainian literature, especially after the Ems Ukase (1876). In order to circumvent censorship Kulish published his works also abroad. Before Kulish was arrested he wrote his works without paying particular attention to the censorship. The first writer’s concerns about possible restrictions that might be imposed on his works by the censorship arose with the novel “The Black Council”. Kulish’s arrest radically changed circumstances of his life and creative activity. Until 1856 he had to submit his works to prior censorship consideration and used pseudonym Nikolai M. (the name of his friend Nikolai Makarov) to avoid these restrictions. The Third Department of His Imperial Majesty’s Personal Chancellery allowed Kulish to publish his works on the base of the general censor regulations only in April 1856. In a short time Kulish sent the manuscript of “The Black Council” to the censorship committee.

Resumo: A história do romance viu, diante de si, formas diversas de narrar, conforme aponta os escritos de Theodor W. Adorno, por exemplo. Desde narradores impessoais, mantendo a distância segura que lhe confere a narrativa em terceira pessoa até os casos em que o que se narra é algo diretamente relacionado ao próprio narrador. Esse parece ser o caso do romance de Marçal Aquino, Eu receberia as piores notícias de seus lindos lábios, que conta o envolvimento amoroso de Cauby e Lavínia a partir do olhar do próprio Cauby. Esse narra de um modo cuja relação de si mesmo com a narrativa fica explícita, tamanha é sua passionalidade em relação às suas vivências e ao ato de narrar. Isso se manifesta tanto na linguagem, em termos de escolhas narrativas, quanto nas ações do narrador-personagem-protagonista que narra e vive aquilo que narra. Suas características mais notáveis são a passionalidade, a capacidade de registrar fotograficamente detalhes da narrativa e o rompimento com técnicas narrativas tradicionais.Palavras-chave: narrador; primeira pessoa; romance brasileiro contemporâneo; Eu receberia as piores notícias de seus lindos lábios.Abstract: The history of the novel saw, before it, different ways of narrating, as pointed out by the writings of Theodor W. Adorno, for example. From impersonal narrators, maintaining the safe distance that the third person narrative gives him until the cases in which what is narrated is something directly related to the narrator himself. This seems to be the case with Marçal Aquino’s novel I would receive the worst news from his beautiful lips, which tells of Cauby and Lavínia’s loving involvement from the point of view of Cauby himself. He narrates in a way whose relationship with himself and the narrative is explicit, such is his passion for his experiences and the act of narrating. This manifests itself both in language, in terms of narrative choices, and in the actions of the narrator-character-protagonist who narrates and experiences what he narrates. Its most notable characteristics are passionality, the ability to photographically record details of the narrative and break with traditional narrative techniques.Keywords: narrator; first person; contemporary Brazilian romance; Eu receberia as piores notícias de seus lindos lábios.

Master and Margarita is a masterpiece of literary modernity. Mikhail Bulgakov wrote the novel in the 1930s in Moscow under the life-threatening conditions of personal persecution. The novel shows how all rationalist claims to power fail because of the invincible power of chance. The utopian state of peace and freedom that the novel creates lies in a sphere beyond all real conflicts and tensions. The present Corona crisis puts the planning reason, which characterizes the history of Western rationality, in many ways questioned. It testifies to the enduring power of chance and thus to the principal limits of human domination of nature. This experience should sensitize our political thinking for the fundamental vulnerability of human beings and the existence of the unpredictable in a new way.
