Acne vulgaris (AV) is an inflammation of pilosebaceous unit especially in young adult. The pathophysiology is the elevation of sebum production, keratinization of abnormal pilocebaseous follicles, and inflammation caused by immune response to Propionibacterium acnes. Therapy combination of oral antibiotics (doxycycline) and physical therapy (blue light) in moderate-severe acne is one option to reduce antibiotic resistance. Doxycycline is a commonly antibiotic used. The effects of photosensitive can increase the penetration of blue light by sebaceous glands. There was a total decrease in sebum and clinical improvement of combination therapy of blue light and doxycycline in seven patients. The combination therapy has been shown to improve its therapeutic effect, but more clinical trials are needed to prove the effectiveness of blue light with doxycycline than without blue light.

Acne vulgaris (acne) is a cutaneous pleomorphic disorder of the pilosebaceous unit involving abnormalities in sebum production and is characterized by both inflammatory (papules, pustules and nodules) and non-inflammatory (comedones, open and closed) lesions. Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis are common pus-forming microbes responsible for the development of various forms of acne. This disease remains a common condition in industrialized societies, with many mainstream treatment options available. There are many acne products on the market, and making an appropriate selection can be daunting. Common therapies that are used for the treatment of acne include topical, systemic, hormonal, herbal and combination therapy. Topically used agents are benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics and retinoid. Systemically used agents are antibiotics and isotretinoin. However, all such treatments carry risks and none is completely satisfactory. Natural alternatives are gaining greater research support, and have much to offer clinically in this disorder. This review focuses primarily on herbal treatments for acne that show scientific evidence of clinical efficacy, as well as the more common herbs shown to be useful in the treatment of this dermatologic disorder.

Background. Colonization of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and increased sebum production play important roles in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. Severity of acne vulgaris correlates with the lesion counts both noninflammatory and inflammatory. Digital fluorescence has been found useful in pathogenesis investigation and treatment evaluation. Ultraviolet-induced red fluorescence (UVRF) was found to be correlated with sebum and porphyrin production that can be synthesized by P. acnes. Therefore, UVRF assessment could be useful for the evaluation of the degree and extent of acne vulgaris. Objective. To evaluate the correlation of UVRF with the severity of acne vulgaris using the digital fluorescence tool. Methods. Forty-five patients were diagnosed with mild-to-severe acne vulgaris according to Lehmann classification. Lesion counts both noninflammatory and inflammatory and UVRF assessment using Visiopor PP34 camera were done to all participants in 5 divided facial areas (forehead, nose, right and left cheeks, and chin). Clinical assessment for each patient was done by 3 dermatologists. Determination of correlation between UVRF with acne lesion counts was done using Pearson test and with acne severity using Spearman test. Results. From 45 participants, majority had moderate acne (64.4%), followed by severe (24.5%) and mild acne (11.1%). Mean number of UVRF spots was 39.98 ± 11.45 and percentage area covered with UVRF was 4.39 ± 1.72. There was no correlation found between acne lesion counts, including noninflammatory and inflammatory with the number and percentage area covered with UVRF spots. Severity grade of acne vulgaris was found to be uncorrelated with the number of UVRF spots (r = 0.27, p=0.073) and percentage area covered with UVRF spots (r = 0.173, p=0.256). Conclusion. The severity of acne vulgaris has no correlation with spot counts and percentage area covered with UVRF. Digital fluorescence might be helpful in investigating further of the interrelated pathogenesis factors of acne.

Abstract Spin-states and charge-trappings in blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are important issues for developing high-device-performance application such as full-color displays and white illumination. However, they have not yet been completely clarified because of the lack of a study from a microscopic viewpoint. Here, we report operando electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to investigate the spin-states and charge-trappings in organic semiconductor materials used for blue OLEDs such as a blue light-emitting material 1-bis(2-naphthyl)anthracene (ADN) using metal–insulator–semiconductor (MIS) diodes, hole or electron only devices, and blue OLEDs from the microscopic viewpoint. We have clarified spin-states of electrically accumulated holes and electrons and their charge-trappings in the MIS diodes at the molecular level by directly observing their electrically-induced ESR signals; the spin-states are well reproduced by density functional theory. In contrast to a green light-emitting material, the ADN radical anions largely accumulate in the film, which will cause the large degradation of the molecule and devices. The result will give deeper understanding of blue OLEDs and be useful for developing high-performance and durable devices.

A blue light curing process was developed to solve the nozzle clogging challenge commonly encountered in conventional textile pigment printing, by using camphorquinone (CQ) and ethyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDMAB) as a photoinitiator combination and substituting oligomers and monomers for a polymeric binder. High light absorption efficiency was insured by closely matching the spectrum of the photoinitiator with a custom-made blue light light-emitting diode set-up. Kinetic analyses of such a CQ/EDMAB system indicated that the maximum polymerization rate of the monomer was proportional to [PI]0.5 and [I0]0.5, while excessive high photoinitiator concentration (>1 wt%) will decrease the polymerization rate because of the “filter effect.” With optimized blue light curable pigment ink formula and irradiation conditions, the photocurable pigment printed fabrics exhibited uniform and vibrant colors, clear outlines, and excellent wet and dry rubbing fastness of grades 4 and 4–5, respectively.

Abstract: Acne vulgaris is a chronic skin condition involving inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicle. The highest prevalence of acne vulgaris is at the age of 16-17 years. Pathogenic factors contributing to the development of acne vulgaris include increased sebum production, pilosebaceous follicular blockage, and increased colonization of Propionibacterium acnes. Personal hygiene is suggested as an important factor that needs to be maintained in acne prevention. Males tend to lack of awareness to seek information and health services in dealing with acne problems. This study was aimed to evaluate the relationship between facial washing and the incidence of acne vulgaris in adolescent males in Manado. This was an analytical and observational study using a cross-sectional design. Subjects were male students of 3rd grade at SMA Negeri 9 Manado, aged 16-19 years old, and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, with a total number of 95 students. Subjects who washed their faces 2-3 times a day were 38 students (40%) while those who washed their faces less than twice or more than thrice a day were 57 students (60%). Subjects with no or mild acne vulgaris were 39 students (41.1%), while those with moderate to severe acne vulgaris were 56 students (58.9%). The chi-square showed a p-value of 0.004 for the relationship between the frequency of facial washing and the incidence of acne vulgaris. In conclusion, there was a significant relationship between facial washing and the incidence of acne vulgaris in adolescent males in Manado. Keywords: facial washing, acne vulgaris Abstrak: Akne vulgaris merupakan peradangan kronis folikel pilosebasea dengan prevalensi tertinggi pada usia 16-17 tahun.
