Background: Post-extraction alveolar bone height and width never reach the same dimensions as before extraction. A combination of propolis extracts and bovine bone graft (BBG) that are anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, osteoinductive and osteconductive is expected to improve bone regeneration. Purpose: Knowing the effect of the combination of propolis extracts and BBG on the number of osteoclast and osteoblast as an effort to preserve the socket after extraction of Cavia cobaya teeth. Methods: 56 Cavia cobaya was divided into eight groups: the lower left incisor was extracted, and the socket was filled with 2% poly ethylene glycol (PEG), propolis extract+PEG, BBG+PEG, and a combination of propolis extract+BBG+PEG. The incisors socket of animals models were executed on the 14th and 30th days. Using HE for histopathological examination, the number of osteoclasts and osteoblasts were counted with a 400x magnification light microscope with nine visual fields. The data were analysed via one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests. Results: The highest mean number of osteoclasts occurred in the BBG+PEG 14th day group and the lowest occurred in the propolis extract+BBG+PEG 14th day group. The highest mean number of osteoblasts occurred in the propolis + BBG + PEG combination 30th day group, the lowest occurred in the control group (PEG) on the 14th day. Conclusion: The 2% combination of propolis extracts and BBG effectively reduces the osteoclast number and increases the osteoblast number in preserving the socket after extracting Cavia cobaya teeth.

Objective: To quantitatively compare the alveolar bone support ratio of the permanent canine in cleft patients who received secondary alveolar bone graft with that of the population without clefts. Design: Retrospective study utilizing periapical radiographs of the subjects with and without clefts. Setting: Hospital and university based. Patients: Eighteen unilateral and 9 bilateral cleft patients who had secondary bone graft procedures. Main Outcome Measures: Alveolar bone support of the permanent canine utilizing the ratio of bone height to root length. Results: Average bone support for the permanent canine was 88.55% in patients with clefts and 95.59% in patients with no history of clefts. This difference was statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference in alveolar bone support ratio between the unilateral and bilateral cleft patients. Conclusions: Although alveolar bone support was significantly higher in the noncleft control group, a successful level of alveolar bone support was achieved for the permanent canine on the cleft site after secondary bone graft. There was no difference in alveolar bone support achieved for the permanent canine whether the type of the cleft was unilateral or bilateral.

Background: Tooth extraction is a procedure frequently performed in the field of dentistry that can cause alveolar bone resorption during the healing process. Therefore, preservation of sockets is necessary to maintain alveolar bone which represents one of the important factors in the successful manufacture of dentures. A combination of propolis extract and bovine bone graft (BBG) can accelerate bone regeneration. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a combination of propolis extract and BBG on the quantity of fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts in the tooth extraction socket. Methods: 56 Cavia cobaya were divided into eight groups. The lower left incisor of each subject was extracted and induced with polyethylene glycol (PEG), propolis extract + PEG, BBG + PEG, combination of propolis extract + BBG + PEG at a concentration of 2% active substance. Experimental subjects were sacrificed on days 3 and 7. Histopathological examination with a microscope at 400x magnification was conducted to calculate the quantity of fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests. Results: The highest average quantity of fibroblasts and osteoblasts and the lowest average quantity of osteoclasts occurred in the group to which a combination of propolis extract and BBG had been administered on both days 3 and 7. According to the statistical analysis results, all the treatment groups recorded a significant difference in the quantity of fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts with a p value: 0.000 (p<0.05). Conclusion: A combination of propolis extract and BBG can increase the quantity of fibroblast and osteoblast cells, while reducing the number of osteoclast cells in tooth extraction sockets treated with 2% concentration of the active substance.

Background: Alveolar bone has an important role in providing support to teeth and dentures. Loss of support caused by alveolar resorption will cause functional and aesthetic problems. Preservation socket using bone graft is one way to maintain the dimensions of the alveolar bone. Moringa oleifera leaf can increase the activity of bone graft in the formation of new bone. Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of combined Moringa oleivera leaf extract and demineralized freeze-dried bovine bone xenograft (DFDBBX) towards the formation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in the tooth extraction sockets of cavia cobaya. Method: This study used 28 cavia cobayas divided into four groups. The combination of Moringa oleifera leaf extract and DFDBBX was inducted into the sockets of lower incisor tooth with certain dose in each group, ointment 1 containing PEG (a mixture of PEG 400 and PEG 4000) for control group, ointment 2 containing Moringa oleifera leaf extract and DFDBBX and PEG (at active subtance consentration of 0.5%) for group 1, ointment 3 containing Moringa oleifera leaf extract and DFDBBX and PEG (at active substance concentration of 1%) for group 2, and Ointment 4 containing Moringa oleifera leaf extract and DFDBBX and PEG (at active substance consentration of 2%) for group 3. paraffin block preparations were made for histopathology examination using hematoxylin eosin staining. Result: The results showed that there were significant differences of the number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in each treatment group (p <0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the combination of Moringa oleifera leaf extract and DFDBBX at 2% cocentration can increase the number of osteoblasts and decrease osteoclasts in the healing of tooth extraction sockets of cavia cobaya.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the preservation of alveolar dimensions in human fresh extraction sockets filled with a composite bovine bone graft by means of design of single-blind randomized clinical trial. Forty participants had monoradicular teeth extracted (one teeth in each participant), and after were randomly divided into 2 groups: individuals whose fresh sockets were filled with the composite heterologous bone graft (Biomaterial Group), or with blood clot (Control Group). After extraction, the fresh sockets were measured at their greatest mesiodistal (MD) and bucco-lingual/palatal (BL/P) distance. Primary closure of the soft tissue was performed with a fibro-mucosal plug. After 120 post-operative days, the re-entry procedure was performed and the largest MD and BL/P measurements were again obtained to calculate the remodeling of the alveolar bone measured in percentage. In the biomaterial group, a percentage reduction of 1.62% and 3.29% in the MD and BL/P dimensions was observed 120 days after the extractions, whereas a reduction of 4.97% and 7.18% in the MD and BL/P dimensions occurred in the control group. There was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) between the two groups for the bucco-palatal and mesiodistal measurements in the maxilla. In view of the results obtained, it can be concluded that composite bovine bone graft limited but did not impede alveolar bone remodeling.

Background: Maintaining a good ridge is required during prosthodontic treatment. Hence, adequate alveolar bone support is considered an important factor in pursuing successful dentures. Propolis extract combined with bovine bone graft is a recent and innovative material in the process of socket preservation, as the caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) it contains can suppress the inflammatory process. Purpose: This study aims to determine the effective dose of propolis extract combined with bovine bone graft on the number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in socket preservation. Methods: Twenty-eight Cavia cobaya animals were divided into four groups of seven. Group I was given 25 grams of PEG, while Group II were given a propolis extract at a dose of 0.5% combined with bovine bone graft. Group III were given a propolis extract at a dose of 1% combined with bovine bone graft and Group IV were given a propolis extract at a dose of 2% combined with bovine bone graft. On day 30, the lower incisor of each subject was extracted and induced with PEG and propolis (dose 0.5%, 1%, 2%). Histopathological examinations of osteoblasts and osteoclasts were measured with a 400x magnification light microscope. One-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests were performed to analyse data statistically. Results: The propolis extract combined with bovine bone graft not only increased the number of osteoblasts but also reduced the number of osteoclasts. The most effective dose for the propolis extract combined with bovine bone graft was 2%. Conclusion: The propolis extract combined with bovine bone graft could be effective in tooth extraction socket preservation at a dose of 2%.

Objective: This study was to determine OPG and RANKL expression after hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffold from crab shells (Portunus pelagicus) application in tooth socket of Cavia cobaya. Methods: This study was a post-test only control group design. Twenty four Cavia cobaya was divided into 4 groups. The lower left incisor was extracted and given a combination of HA and gelatin scaffold. Experimental animals were sacrificed on the 7th and 14th day. The amount of OPG and RANKL expression was calculated under a light microscope at 1000x magnification. The statistical analysis was done by One Way ANOVA Test and Tukey HSD. Results: Compared to other groups, the lowest and the highest level of OPG and RANKL were in P14 group. Conclusion: HA scaffold from crab shells (Portunus pelagicus) can increase OPG expression and decrease RANKL expression in the process of regenerating alveolar bone after tooth extraction.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of inorganic bovine bone graft (Lumina Bone, Criteria, Brazil) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) graft (ChronOS, Synthes, Brazil) in rats with the risk of developing post-extraction medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Methods: Eighteen male Wistar rats weighing 350 to 450 g were induced to develop MRONJ using zoledronic acid for 5 weeks. In the sixth week, the right maxillary first molar was extracted. The animals in Group I (G1) did not receive bone grafts after tooth extraction, while Group II (G2) animals received inorganic bovine bone grafts, and Group III (G3) animals received beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) grafts. Clinical evaluation and histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. ANOVA and Tukey’s statistical tests were used and a level of significance was considered to be 5%. Results: In the clinical evaluation, animals from G2 and G3 did not present clinical manifestations of osteonecrosis, unlike the control group (G1) animals, which presented necrotic bone tissue exposure in all samples. In the histomorphometric evaluation, animals in G3 showed greater formation of bone tissue (66%) and less formation of bone lacuna (18%) than animals in G1 (58%/32%) and in G2 (59%/27%) ( P < 0.05). Moderate (++) immunostaining was observed in G2 and G3 for RANKL, TRAP, and OC, while G1 showed moderate (++) labeling for OC and mild (+) immunostaining for TRAP and RANKL. Conclusions: Greater formation of bone tissue and fewer bone lacunae were found in animals treated with β-TCP. In clinical evaluation, bone graft groups presented with the clinical manifestation of MRONJ and showed higher intensity of immunostaining for TRAP and RANKL. Despite the limitations of experimental animal studies, the results of this work may assist in the development of future clinical research for the prevention of MRONJ.

This study is aimed at assessing the dimensional alterations occurring in the alveolar bone after premolar extraction in dogs with histomorphometric and histological analysis. After atraumatic premolar extraction, tooth-derived bone graft material was grafted in the extraction socket of the premolar region in the lower jaws of six dogs in two experimental groups. In the second experimental group, BM-MSCs were added together with the graft. The control was left untreated on the opposite side. After twelve weeks, all six animals were sacrificed. Differences in alveolar bone height crests lingually and buccally, and alveolar bone width at 1, 3, and 5 mm infracrestally, were examined. Histologic study revealed osteoconductive properties of tooth biomaterial. A statistically significant difference was detected between the test and control groups. In the test groups, a reduced loss of vertical and horizontal alveolar bone dimensions compared with the control group was observed. Tooth bone graft material may be considered useful for alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction, as it could limit the natural bone resorption process.

ABSTRACT Objectives To test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in bone dehiscence formation before and after orthodontic tooth movement through an atrophic alveolar ridge. Material and Methods This longitudinal retrospective study evaluated pretreatment and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography imaging of 15 adult patients. Twenty-five teeth were moved through the atrophic alveolar bone, whereas 25 teeth not subjected to translational movement were considered controls. The distances between the cementoenamel junction and the alveolar bone crest were assessed at the mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual surfaces of all of these teeth. Data were compared using the Wilcoxon test. The Spearman correlation test and multivariate linear regression analysis were also performed. Results In general, crestal bone height was reduced around 0.5 mm in all groups in every direction. Median buccal dehiscence increased significantly (+2.25 mm) (P &lt; .05) in teeth moved through the atrophic ridge. Control teeth also had buccal crest loss (+0.83 mm), but this was not statistically different from that of the experimental teeth. Lingual dehiscence increased significantly for the experimental (+0.17 mm) and control (+0.65 mm) groups. Mesial bone height decreased more in the control group (–0.44mm) than in the experimental group (–0.14mm). There was moderate correlation between amount of tooth movement and alveolar bone loss. Conclusions The null hypothesis was rejected as dehiscence increased after tooth movement through an atrophic alveolar ridge, mainly in the buccal plate.

The purpose of this study was to examine if the application of custom-made porous titanium membranes combined with bone graft materials promotes exophytic bone formation in rabbit calvaria. For this purpose, round decorticated calvaria sites were created using a round carbide bur. In the control group, rectangular parallelepiped-shaped porous titanium membranes (RPTMs) were placed on the decorticated sites and fixed with metal pins. In the experimental groups, RPTMs were filled with one of the following bone graft materials prior to fixing with metal pins: bovine bone mineral (BBM), demineralized freeze-dried human cortical bone (DFDB) or freeze-dried human cancellous bone (FDB). Animals were sacrificed at 8 and 12 weeks after surgery, and new bone formation was assessed by histomorphometric as well as statistical analysis. The results indicate that at 8 and 12 weeks, all the experimental groups demonstrated exophytic bone formation. At 12 weeks, DFDB group revealed the most new bone formation (p<0.05) and resorption of grafted materials (p<0.05). On the basis of these findings, we conclude that RPTMs may be used as an augmentation membrane for guided bone regeneration and DFDB as an effective bone-inducing graft material.
