East Java has a big role in supplying agricultural product for nasional logistic. The problems are not completely resolved, regional development planning should integrate sectoral and spatial approach. The focus of study is to analyze the linkage of rice production to other sectors, in order to develop rice production. Research using the Input-Output models, Location Quotient to measure the degree of relative specialization of a region, and DEA to measure the performance of spatial efficiency. The result used IO table in 2010, contributors backward linkage of paddy sector are paddy sector itself, fertilizer and pesticide sector, also agriculture services and hunting, while the backward linkage contributors are paddy sector itself, rice sector, and food products and beverages. Spatially there are 28 areas that are able to serve the market of paddy products. If related to production efficiency, there are nine areas are included in the category of efficient production, with input in the form of land, and the number of farmers. Policy Implication related to the findings of input output approach, are the affordability of input proces, the streamlined of input distributing system, and the goes on education and information to the farmer about input usage. Whereas, related to the spatial aspect, in soft infrastructure as strengthening internal capacity of farmer and instructor. In the other hand, hard structure aspect especially restoration of irrigation, allocating best seed and fertilizer for farmer.

Microalgae have long been used for the commercial production of natural colorants such as carotenoids and chlorophyll. Due to the rising demand for carotenoids and other natural products from microalgae, strategies to increase production efficiency are urgently needed. The production of microalgal biorefineries has been limited to countries with moderate climates. For countries with cooler climates and less daylight, methodologies for the efficient production of microalgal biorefineries need to be investigated. Algal strains that can be safely consumed as whole cells are also attractive alternatives for developing as carotenoid supplements, which can also contain other compounds with health benefits. Using such strains helps to eliminate the need for hazardous solvents for extraction and several other complicated steps. In this study, the mesophilic green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was employed to study the effects of cold stress on cell physiology and the production of pigments and storage compounds. The results showed that temperatures between 10 and 20 °C induced carotenoid and chlorophyll accumulation in the wild-type strain of C. reinhardtii. Interestingly, the increased level of carotenoids suggested that they might play a crucial role in cold stress acclimation. A temperature of 15 °C resulted in the highest carotenoid and chlorophyll productivity. At this temperature, carotenoid and chlorophyll productivity was 2 times and 1.3 times higher than at 25 °C, respectively. Subjecting a mutant defective in lutein and zeaxanthin accumulation to cold stress revealed that these two carotenoids are not essential for cold stress survival. Therefore, cold temperature could be used as a strategy to induce and increase the productivity of pigments in C. reinhardtii.

Irrigation production is a means by which agricultural production can be increased to meet the growing food demands in the world. This study evaluated the effect of irrigation ecology on farm household technical, allocative, and economic efficiency of smallholder rice farmers. Cross-sectional data was obtained from 350 rice farmers across rain fed and irrigation ecologies. Stochastic frontier analyses are used to estimate the production efficiency and endogenous treatment effect regression model is used to estimate the impact of irrigation ecology on rice production efficiency. The impact of irrigation ecology on technical efficiency is about 0.05, which implies farmers producing under irrigation ecology are more technically efficient in their rice production than those in rain fed production. The impact of irrigation ecology on allocative efficiency is about 0.33, which shows that farmers participating in irrigation farming are more allocatively efficient in their rice production than those in rain fed production. The impact on economic efficiency is about 0.23, meaning that farmers participating in irrigation farming are more economically efficient in their rice production than those in rain fed production. Irrigation ecology has positive impact on production efficiency; hence farmers should be encouraged to produce more under irrigation for increased yield and profit.

This study aims to identify and determine the leading sectors in Malang City to illustrate leading economic activities that can be developed to boost economic potential in Malang City. The analysis tools used include Shift-Share, Location Quotient (LQ), and Growth Ratio Model (GRM) analysis. The results show that: (1) shift-share analysis showed that the economy of Malang City during the period 2010-2016 increased by Rp. 12,926,565.5 million. The increase in economic performance in Malang City can be seen from 16 (sixteen) sectors of economic activity that are positive; (2) Location Quotient (LQ) analysis showed the leading sectors in Malang City consisting of 7 (seven) sectors, i.e. water procurement, garbage, waste and recycling management, construction, retail and wholesale trade, car and motorcycle repair, financial and insurance services, education services, health services, and social activities and other services sector; (3) Growth Ratio Model (GRM) estimation showed that the dominant sectors of growth and large contributions consist of the retail and wholesale trade car and motorcycle repair, transportation and warehousing, accommodation and food provision, information and communication, financial and insurance services, real estate, education services and health services and social activities sectors; (4) weighting results based on Shift-Share, Location Quotient (LQ) analysis, and Growth Ratio Model (GRM) showed that five sectors based on the highest potential weighting results are the health services and social activities, education services, construction, retail and wholesale trade car and motorcycle repair, and financial and insurance services sector. Keywords: Economic Potential, Shift-Share, Location Quotient (LQ), Growth Ratio Model (GRM)JEL Classification: R58;R11;O41

Identification of leading sectors or subsectors is one of the main tasks of the regional government and is an important part of regional development planning before formulating, drafting and establishing a better development policy strategy. The main objective of this research is to analyze and identify subsectors in the manufacturing industry sector that have comparativeness and competitiveness in Jambi Province. Main data of this study are secondary data of districts and cities in Jambi Province during the period 2011–2015 which were sourced from the Central Bureau of Statistics,  and Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas). Data were analyzed using descriptive and quantitative analysis methods, namely Location Quotient analysis and Shift Share analysis. Results of the study show that the manufacturing industry subsector of Jambi Province which can be classified as comparative and competitive subsector are timber/wood products industry, paper/goods industry, rubber/rubber goods industry, and furniture industry

ABSTRACT While low-luminosity galaxies dominate number counts at all redshifts, their contribution to cosmic reionization is poorly understood due to a lack of knowledge of their physical properties. We isolate a sample of 35 z ≈ 4–5 continuum-faint Lyman-α emitters from deep VLT/MUSE spectroscopy and directly measure their H α emission using stacked Spitzer/IRAC Ch. 1 photometry. Based on Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we determine that the average UV continuum magnitude is fainter than −16 (≈ 0.01 L⋆), implying a median Lyman-α equivalent width of 259 Å. By combining the H α measurement with the UV magnitude, we determine the ionizing photon production efficiency, ξion, a first for such faint galaxies. The measurement of log10 (ξion [Hz erg−1]) = 26.28 ($^{+0.28}_{-0.40}$) is in excess of literature measurements of both continuum- and emission line-selected samples, implying a more efficient production of ionizing photons in these lower luminosity, Lyman-α-selected systems. We conclude that this elevated efficiency can be explained by stellar populations with metallicities between 4 × 10−4 and 0.008, with light-weighted ages less than 3 Myr.

The future of agriculture is dependent on increase in the use of resources at disposal, it is therefore imperative that strategies to increase agricultural growth should be directed towards increasing efficiency of smallholder farming operations and resource utilization. This study examined the economic efficiency of rice production. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 240 rice farmers with the aid of a structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed with descriptive techniques, Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) and Tobit regression model. The SFA result revealed that input variables such as seed, herbicide and pesticide were positive and had significant effect on rice output. The rice farmers were able to maximize their output by 74% at lowest minimum cost possible. Furthermore, economic efficiency was positively influenced by age, level of education, membership of farmers association, access to public market and access to health facilities while household size, farming experience, bad road condition and distance to nearest market had negative effects. The study concluded that rice farmers were inefficient. Therefore, in order to raise rice production efficiency and improve the livelihood of smallholder farmers, farmers should attend formal and informal education as it is a key policy issue in the study area, farmers should strengthen the existing association structures and organize new farmer’s associations. Also, the local and regional governments were encouraged to provide good road networks, and public market that will enable farmers dispose their produce at attractive places and prices of their choice.

Regional potential is the ability of an area in the form of resources that can be used, exploited, and taken advantage of for further development so that it can improve and create regional capabilities. This study aims to make the potential of the physical region contained in the Geospatial based Pringsewu Regency, and the potential of the social area contained in the Geospatial based Pringsewu Regency. The method used is descriptive with a spatial approach. The results of the study are physical and social spatial data of the region including: administration, rainfall, groundwater basins, rivers and watersheds, landforms, slope, soil type, contour and height lines, land use, road networks, land capability, landslides, floods , population, and population density, so that it can be used as a reference in regional development planning.
