Background: Functional activities mostly done in daily life such as jumping, walking, running, and stairs ascending-descending require dynamic stability of the knee. The knee joint dynamic stability is required to have effective and efficient functional activities and to avoid injury when performing them. It can be achieved by increasing muscle strength through strengthening exercises with the aim of balancing the agonist muscles (quadriceps femoris) and antagonist muscles (hamstring) using the agonist- antagonist paired set (APS) method.Aim: The aim of this study is to find out the effect of strengthening exercise using APS method, compared to traditional set (TS) method, on single-leg hop performance.Material and Methods: The subjects of this study were 14 untrained healthy men aged 18-40 years old divided into 2 intervention groups, APS group and TS group. The variable evaluated was the distance of single-leg hop (SLH).Results: The results of this study showed a significant increase in SLH distance in APS group (p=0.005) and TS group (p<0.001) with no significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.933).Conclusion: Quadriceps femoris and hamstring muscle strengthening exercises in both APS and TS methods increase SLH distance although there is no difference between them. The APS method has an advantage compared to the TS method in terms of a relatively shorter time with comparable results.

Background: Patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy is more responding by application of cervical traction with NSAIDs, exercise and ADL than treating with NSAIDs, exercise and ADL.Objectives: Study is to know the effect of home cervical traction on patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy.Materials & Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, BSMMU during the period of 3-9-2012 to 2-9-2013 to find out the effect of home cervical traction on patient with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy.Results: A total of 120 patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy attended the department. Sixty patients was treated with NSAID, Isometric neck muscle strengthening exercise, Activity of daily living advice (ADL) and soft cervical collar, other 60 patients was treated with NSAID, Isometric neck muscle strengthening exercise, Activity of daily living advice (ADL) and soft cervical collar with home cervical traction. The patients were treated for 6 weeks. There was marked improvement in both groups after treatment. But there was significant difference regarding improvement in treatment with home cervical traction (p=0.432).Conclusion: So, it can be concluded that the home cervical traction is effective in cervical spondylotic radiculopathy. Male and female ratio was 1.9:.6. In respect of occupation the maximum patient was housewife (27.5%) followed by businessman (25. 8%). Lingual strengthening training can improve the swallowing function in older adults, but the optimal method is unclear. We investigated the effects of a new progressive resistance exercise in the elderly by comparing with a conventional isometric tongue strengthening exercise. Twenty-nine participants were divided into two groups randomly. One group performed forceful swallow of 2 mL of water every 10 s for 20 min, and a total of 120 swallowing tasks per session at 80% angle of maximum head extension. The other group performed five repetitions in 24 sets with a 30 s rest, and the target level was settled at 80% of one repetition maximum using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI). A total of 12 sessions were carried out by both groups over a 4-week period. Blinded measurements (for maximum lingual isometric pressure and peak pressure during swallowing) were obtained using IOPI before exercise and at four weeks in both groups. After four weeks, both groups showed a significant improvement in lingual strength involving both isometric and swallowing tasks. However, there was no significant difference between the groups in strength increase involving both tasks. Regardless of the manner, tongue-strengthening exercises substantially improved lingual pressure in the elderly with equal effect.

The pes planus deformity is seen more in adults. Pes planus or low foot medial longitudinal arch, contributes to lower extremity injury due to the muscular imbalance. This deformity causes proximal to distal muscle imbalance in lower limb. Effective correction of muscle imbalance is prime important in correction of pes planus. The purpose of the study was to find the effect of exercise in pes planus to correct the imbalance, improve the condition & prevent the injuries along with the long-term effect of the pes planus deformity. To study and find the effect of lower limb proximal to distal muscle imbalance correction in pes planus deformity in young adults. 40 people with functional pes planus deformity were randomly assigned to a group that received the baseline treatment for the muscle imbalance along with the intrinsic muscle strengthening exercises (experimental group) or a group that received only intrinsic muscle strengthening exercises (control group). Each group received 6 weeks treatment. Statistical analysis were performed using paired t test and unpaired t test. In pre-intervention, there was no statistically significant difference seen with p values for the navicular drop test for the right leg and left leg 0.1127, 0.1504 respectively. Ink test p values for the right leg, left leg 0.4184, 0.8719 respectively. While on comparing the post-interventional values using the unpaired t test, revealed that there was extremely significant difference seen with p value for both legs the navicular drop test was 0.0001 and for the ink test (right leg=0.0008, left leg=0.0318). Our study reported that muscular imbalance corrective exercises along with the intrinsic muscle strengthening was more effective in improving the condition and muscle imbalance caused by the pes planus. So, muscular imbalance corrective exercises and intrinsic muscle strengthening exercises should be recommended to correct the deformity or prevent the abnormalities in people with functional pes planus.

During the last years, muscle strengthening exercises have been included as an essential part in youth physical activity guidelines of national and international health organisations. It is well-documented that strength training is effective in improving physical fitness and promoting health and psycho-social well-being. Therefore, the purpose of this review article is to present empirical evidence on the effectiveness of strength training in children and adolescents. Additionally, and with reference to an established youth physical development model, conceptual and methodological aspects of safe and effective strength training in youth will be discussed and specific practical recommendations will be presented.

ABSTRACT               Abdominal muscle strength decreasing could happen in women who has been giving birth. Zumba exercise is a modification of aerobic exercise with latin music and dance that could be used for muscle strengthening exercise. The purpose of the experiment is for knowing the effect of zumba exercise to increase the abdominal muscles strength in women who has been giving birth. The research is a pre-experimental with a pre-test and post-test one group design. The research has been done in North Sanglah Village with total of 18 samples that was chosen by the Curl Up test score and inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analyzed using Saphiro Wilk test and  Wilcoxon Test. The results shown there are significant increasing of abdominal muscles strength after given the zumba exercise, p=0,000 (p<0,05). Zumba exercise could increase the abdominal muscles strength in samples with a 26,7% increasing percentage.   Keywords: zumba exercise, abdominal mucles strength decreasing.

Although the manipulation of exercise and dietary intake to achieve successful weight loss has been extensively studied, it is unclear how the time of day that exercise is performed may affect subsequent energy intake. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of an acute bout of exercise performed in the morning compared with an equivalent bout of exercise performed in the afternoon on short-term energy intake. Nine healthy male participants completed 3 trials: morning exercise (AM), afternoon exercise (PM), or control (no exercise; CON) in a randomized counterbalanced design. Exercise consisted of 45 min of treadmill running at 75% VO2peak. Energy intake was assessed over a 26-hr period with the participants eating ad libitum from a standard assortment of food items of known quantity and composition. There was no significant difference in overall energy intake (M ± SD; CON 23,505 ± 6,938 kJ, AM 24,957 ± 5,607 kJ, PM 24,560 ± 5,988 kJ; p = .590) or macronutrient preferences during the 26-hr period examined between trials. Likewise, no differences in energy intake or macronutrient preferences were observed at any of the specific individual meal periods examined (i.e., breakfast, lunch, dinner) between trials. These results suggest that the time of day that exercise is performed does not significantly affect short-term energy intake in healthy men.
