<p><em>A conservation area for mangrove forests and proboscis monkeys locates within a dense urban centre in Tarakan city. Its surrounding area has rapidly transformed into condensing urban artificial structures with minimal vegetation cover. The study aims to determine the cooling effect of the conservation area toward its surrounding. The study applies model assessment, which comprises ENVI-MET for simulation of air temperature distribution, and Rayman for PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) calculation to investigate the level of heat stress. The result shows that the mangrove cover has a cooling effect effectively after midnight to 11:00 the subsequent day. Specifically, for the surrounding area, it is confined within an 8-hour window (from 0:00 to 8:00). Within this window, inside the mangrove area, ENVI-MET  generates significantly lower air temperature, when compared to its surrounding. The mangrove presence correlates to reducing air temperature up to 1.8</em><em>°</em><em> C. The cooling effect also extends to its surrounding with a limited radius (approximately 10 m). However, PMV calculation implies that there is no significant improvement in thermal comfort as a result of the mangrove presence. The results may not adequately reflect the reality in the field. Further research to calibrate PMV measurement that involves human monitoring is required to validate the findings.</em></p>

The area of mangrove forests in Indonesia is currently only spanning as much as 3.4 milion acres, so there is a need for the participation of the government and community to maintain its sustainability. South Halmahera is the district with the largest mangrove area in the North Maluku Province. One of the mangrove areas in the District of South Halmahera is located at Sayoang Village, East Bacan Subdistrict Up until its eleventh founding anniversary, this district have never conducted an inventorizing of its mangroves, both ecological and social studies in the field of public. This study aims to analyze the compotition of mangrove species in Sayoang Village, East Bacan Subdistrict, South Halmahera, and identify the knowledge of surrounding communities of mangrove areas as protected areas. Data were retrieved using sampling method with applications terraced paths, and analyzed by calculating its important value index (INP) and its index value diversity (IVD). The public social data were taken using in-depth interviews and questionnaires. Results obtained from this study show that the mangrove forest in Sayoang Village, East Bacan District, Halmahera, consists of major mangrove species with as many as eleven species belonging to families Rhizophoraceae, Sonneratiaceae, Avicenniaceae, Meliaceae and Myrtaceae, and as many as three species of minor mangrove belonging to families of Loranthaceae, Acanthaceae, and Pteridaceae. The mangrove's species diversity and richness is and low, but it has high evenness. The results showed that 60% of total respondents know the benefit of mangrove as fish habitat, while for mangrove area as conserving areas, 50% of total respondent don't know the status of the area. The cutting problems happened in mangrove areas, 90% of total respondent know the activity and 85% of total respondent think that the logging activities in mangrove area is still allowed. The management activity of mangrove area in Sayoang village hasn't been conducted, either by the community or by local Dinas Kehutanan, and 53% of total respondent still wishing the mangrove can give more benefit economically.Key words: Mangrove forest, mangrove protected areas, community knowledge

ABSTRACT Conservation Area for Mangrove and Proboscis in Tarakan City was built to preserve mangrove ecosystems and wildlife in its development and alternative ecotourism destinations. Based on the potential of Conservation Area for Mangrove and Proboscis in Tarakan City, therefore this study aims to predict the trend of tourist visits in Conservation Area for Mangrove and Proboscis in Tarakan City so that it can become the foundation for the development of Conservation Area for Mangrove and Proboscis inTarakan City in the future. In this study using respondents as many as 100 respondents who were Conservation Area for Mangrove and Proboscis in Tarakan City visitors. The sampling used method was accedential sampling and quota sampling. The result shown than visitors of Conservation Area for Mangrove and Proboscis inTarakan from 2018-2022 estimated to reach 164,888,5 visitors. The average decrease in visits per year is 978 people. Because of the facilities in the Conservation Area for Mangrove and Proboscis in Tarakan City are inadequate, such as wooden bridge that begin to be damaged and slippery when it rains, lack of place to sit, cleanliness that has not been maintained, unsanitary toilets, and lack of parking areas, and reduced proboscis monkey. If there is no renovation and repair of facilities, visitors tend not to choose the Conservation Area for Mangrove and Proboscis in Tarakan City as an alternative tourist attractions. Keywords: Conservation of mangrove, Ecotourism, Trend Analysis.

Mangrove forests have high ecological, economic and social values ??which function to maintain shoreline stability, protect beaches and riverbanks, filter and remediate waste, and to withstand floods and waves. The facts show that mangrove damage is everywhere, even the intensity of damage and its area tends to increase significantly. Many roles of mangroves require proper management to maintain the existence of mangroves. One way to determine the area of ??mangroves is by processing Landsat 8 satellite imagery. The stages of mangrove identification are carried out by using 564 RGB band merger, then separating the mangrove and non-mangrove objects. Next step is to analyze the density of mangroves using NDVI formula. To maximize monitoring of mangrove area, an android application was created that provides information on the area and density of mangroves at several locations, namely Clungup, Bangsong Teluk Asmara and Cengkrong from 2015 to 2018.The results showed that Landsat 8 satellite imagery can be used to identify changes in the area of ??mangrove forests with good accuracy, namely in the Clungup area of ??90% and Cengkrong of 86.67%. From processing results, the mangrove area in the Clungup area has also decreased from 2015 to 2017 but has increased in 2018 so that the application provides recommendations for embroidering mangroves in 2016 to 2017 and mangrove recommendations are maintained in 2018. As for Bangsong Teluk area Asmara and Cengkrong have increased the area of ??mangroves every year so that the application provides recommendations to be maintained from 2016 to 2018.

Shading greenhouses in a hot and sunny climate is essential to reduce the inside greenhouse air temperature. However, the type and location of nets need to be addressed properly to determine the shading method that provides a better cooling effect on the greenhouse air. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of five different shading methods on greenhouse microclimates, and to investigate the cooling potential of each method. Four greenhouse models covered with 200-µm thick plastic film were used for the study: one was kept as control (C), one was whitened with slaked lime (L), and two were shaded with white and black nets (50% shading factor) deployed simultaneously at two locations, in contact (WC, BC) and at 20-cm distance from the cladding film (WD, BD). The microclimatic parameters were measured inside and outside the greenhouse models, and the cooling potential (CP) was predicted for each shading method. The results showed that the black net at 20-cm distance (BD) is desirable as it provides high CP with a reasonable solar radiation transmission. The maximum CP was estimated as 8.5 °C, 8 °C, 6 °C, 3.2 °C, and 2.1 °C for L, BD, BC, WD, and WC, respectively. Shading with white nets is not recommended because their cooling potential is very low. Based on these results, we developed correlations for predicting the CP for each shading method as a function of the transmitted solar radiation flux (Si). These correlations depend on Si. Accordingly, they can be used for small greenhouses, whitewashed with a slaked lime of any concentration, or shaded with a black net having any shading factor.

Lestari F, Kusmana C. 2015. The effect of waste on chlorophyll content of leaves and regeneration of mangrove forest at Angke Kapuk Protection Forest, Jakarta. Bonorowo Wetlands 5: 77-84. Mangrove ecosystem is a transition ecosystem between land and sea. Currently the mangrove forests at Angke Kapuk Protection Forest, North Jakarta has been degraded by large amount waste. In connection with this situation, the forest research was carried out with the aim to consider the effect of waste existence on the chlorophyll content of tree’s leaf and the regeneration of mangrove forests in Angke Kapuk Protection Forest. The results showed that the existence of the waste has no effect on the chlorophyll content of leaves, but it has significant by impact on the regeneration of mangrove forest. This is shown with a density of mangrove seedlings in the less waste-occupied mangrove area is bigger than that of medium and high waste-occupied mangrove areas.
