This study is aimed to find out the correlation between: (1) reading habit and reading skills of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar; (2) vocabulary mastery and reading skills of the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar; (3) reading habit and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and reading skills of the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar. The study focused on English lesson material that was involved reading activities. The study belongs to correlational study. The population was all of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar. The sample was 24 students that were selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used to collect the data were tests and questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of reading habit. The techniques used to analyze the data were Simple and Multiple Linear Regression and Correlation. The result of the study show that (1) there is a positive correlation between students’ reading habit and students’ reading skill that can be showed r-count is more than rtable (2.553>1.717); (2) there is a positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ reading skills that can be showed r-count is more that r-table (2.120>1.717); (3) there is a positive correlation between students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and students’ reading skills that can be showed fcount is more that f-table (6.266>3.467). With regard to the result of the study, it can be concluded that positive correlation between reading habit and vocabulary mastery and reading skills indicates that both reading habit and vocabulary mastery could support and ultimately give contribution to reading skills. Hence, students’ reading and vocabulary mastery need to be considered in the teaching and learning activities of reading.

The research method was quasi experimental research by using simple factorial design 2x2. The population in this research was the second grade students of English Teaching Department of IKIP PGRI Madiun. The writer used cluster random sampling to get the sample. It consists of 60 students which were divided into two classes, II D consisting 30 students as a control class and II B consisting 30 students as an experimental class. The instruments used to collect the data were writing test to get the score of writing skill. Documentation was used to get the data of students’ intelligence. Before the instruments were used, the tryout was done to know the validity and readiability of instruments. The writer analyzed the data in term of their frequency distribution, normality, and homogeneity. Then, the data were analyzed by using multifactoral analysis 2X2.The findings in this research lead to some conclusions: (1) GIST is more effective than DI for teaching writing; (2) The students having high intelligence have better writing skill than the students having low intelligence; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ intelligence for teaching writing. The effect of teaching strategies on the students’writing skill depends on the students’intelligence.

This research aims to investigate whether the use of SWELL method with fairy tale videos improves the students’ writing ability and to find out which writing components mostly affected by the use of SWELL method. This research was conducted using a quasi-experimental design. The population of the research was the second grade students of SMPN 5 Marioriawa in academic year 2015/2016 which consisted of two classes (56 students). The sample was drawn using cluster random technique. The number of students in the class was 28 students. The research instrument used was writing test. The data obtained through the test were analyzed quantitatively by using 21.0 version of SPSS program. Based on the data analysis, the research findings reveals that there is a significant differentce of the students’ writing skill after being taught by using SWELL method. It is proved by the data that had been processed through SPSS program. The result showed that the mean score of students in experimental group was greater than the mean score in control group (85.03>67.180, with t-test value is lower than the probability value (0.000<0.05). It indicates that there is a significant improvement of students’ writing ability after the treatment. The writing skill of the second grade students of SMPN 5 Maroriawa can be improved significantly by using SWELL method with fairy tale videos. For the writing components that mostly affected by SWELL method. For different aspects of writing, content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic, vocabulary is the most affected by the use SWELL method. The highest score in term of vocabulary was 18 with the percentage 90 with the highest converted score 87.55 categorized as very good categorization.

This research aims to find correlation between (1) habit in watching English movie and writing skill; (2) self-efficacy and writing skill; and (3) habit in watching English movie, and self-efficacy toward writing skill simultaneously. The study was carried out at SMK in Wonoasri. The sample of the study is 22 students out of 260 students in tenth grade as the population. The instruments used for collecting data of habit in watching English movie and self-efficacy is questionnaire, while writing test was used for collecting the data of writing skill. The techniques to analyze data are single and multiple regression correlation. The result of analysis shows that there is a positive correlation between (1) habit in watching English movie and writing skill; (2) self-efficacy and writing skill; and (3) habit in watching English movie, self-efficacy simultaneously and writing skill. The positive correlation indicates that the increase of habit in watching English movie and self-efficacy is followed by the increase of student‟s writing skill at the same time.

This research intends to find out whether or not there is a correlation between students’ translation and writing ability at the English Study Program of FKIP Universitas Riau. There were 40 students from 6A class chosen as samples. The instruments were translation and writing tests. The translation test aims to measure the ability of the students in translating an Indonesian-English text. The writing test aims to measure the students’ ability in writing a descriptive essay. The data were obtained by calculating the translation and writing test results. Based on the calculation, it was found that the students have good translation and writing ability. Besides, the value of the correlation coefficient obtained was 0.521 which means that there is a positive correlation between students’ translation and writing ability. The correlation is categorized as fair correlation since the value of the correlation coefficient obtained is 0.521 which is in the range of 0.400 - 0.599. Considering the fact that there is a correlation between students’ translation and writing ability, it issuggested that the students should also concern about and improve their translation ability because it will also improve their writing skill.

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to obtain empirical data about the effects of students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery towards English recount writing skill. There are the effects of students’ vocabulary (X1) and grammar mastery(X2) towards students’ English recount writing skill (Y). That is proved by the result Fobservedis 679.878 with significance probability level Sig 0.000. The probability value is (0.000) less than 0.05. It means the regression model could be used to predict the students’ skill in writing. The result of data analysis, the multiple regression in which the multiple correlation coefficient, is ( R ) is 0.987 or (ryx1x2 = 0.987). It means it gives strong effects among them. The simultaneous contribution of perception on the teacher’s competence and grammar mastery towards students’ writing skill is R2 x 100% or 0.987 2 x 100% = 97.4 % and the rest 2.6 % determined by the other factors. In conclusion H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted significantly. There is no effect of students’ vocabulary (X1) toward students’ English recount writing skill (Y). It can be proved tobserved 1.574 meanwhile ttable = 1.69. Because of the score of Sig> 0.05 (0.124>0.05) and tobserved<ttable(1.57 <1.69). The score of Sig = 0.124 means H0 is accepted it means that there is no significant effect of student’s vocabulary toward students’ English recount writing skill. From the test of correlation and regression it can be concluded that there is no effect of students’ vocabulary towards students’ English recount writing skill. There is an effect between grammar mastery (X2) toward students’ writing skill (Y). It can be proved by tobserved 14.718 meanwhile ttable = 1.69. Because of the score of Sig< 0.05 (0.000<0.05) and tobserved>ttable(14.718 > 1.69) determination of regression significance criteria is the score of Sig = 0.000 means H0 is rejected. It means that there is a significant effect of grammar mastery towards students’ English recount writing skill. Keywords: Recount Text, Grammar Mastery, Regression Significance, Vocabulary, Writing Skill,
