While several research papers on authentic assessment have been extensively explored, few have addressed the evaluation of authentic assessments starting from the stages of planning, process/implementation, and outcome. To fill the research gap, the purpose of the present case study is to investigate the authentic evaluation of thematic learning enactment. To collect the data, observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation were conducted. The results of this study indicate that the teacher's comprehension of authentic assessment is generally good. However, several assessment techniques did not work as planned. Based on this, the enactment of authentic assessment is still in the poor category. Processing and reporting resulting from the type of assessment are executed according to procedures. However, some did not follow the assessment guidelines of the elementary school level's learning outcome assessment, especially the effective one.

Since assessment is an indispensable part of education, curriculum makers, educators and teachers have engaged in an ongoing discussion of how to address student performance. A variety of assessments including both short-term and long-term ones can be applied during or at the end of the learning process. Among such types, authentic assessment is a prominent approach. This paper is going to advocate authentic assessments as it fosters students' growth and teachers' pedagogical strategies. In addition, it helps to reach the goals of educational practices through the authenticity of equity and innovation when students actively seek their own ways to appreciate what they have learnt. Particularly, in a writing skills class, learners can take this opportunity to improve step by step their own proficiency in the use of written words. The paper, hence, discusses how authentic assessment can be applied to develop college students' writing through classroom observation and a set of semi-structured interviews. The result of the study revealed that using authentic assessment is an effective strategy for enhancing students’ interest in writing process and writing task fulfillment. Students would find it easier to become skillful writers at their English levels. The study, therefore, recommends more uses of authentic assessment in teaching writing skills as well as in teaching and learning the English language in general.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the extent to which student assessments used in two capstone courses in a Master’s in Human Resource Management (HRM) Program were authentic, and encouraged confidence in competencies identified. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative approach was taken to evaluate the perception of lecturers, clients and students regarding authenticity of assessments and the competencies achieved. The authors used a five-dimensional framework for authentic assessment developed by Gulikers et al. (2004) as a basis for an online survey of the students and focus group, reflection of the client and for self-reporting their reflections. Findings It was found that the assessments in the two courses were aligned with the five criteria of the framework for defining authentic assessments developed by Gulikers et al. (2004), however, there were challenges noted by the students and clients. Students reported attaining some of the competencies identified in the HRM graduate competency profile but needing reinforcement for more confidence. While the students felt that they benefitted, one major challenge of the authentic assessments was the heavy workload. Practical implications Graduate programs in HRM may be producing students without the relevant competencies and the confidence to perform, partly because approaches to teaching and learning and in particular design of assessments may not be sufficiently practical. The findings of this study can provide support for more authentic assessments in professional business education programs. Originality/value Few cases studies exist on application of authentic assessments to mastery of competencies in developing countries. This contributes to the discussion on competency-based education and authentic learning, with particular reference to developing country contexts.

Changes in Curriculum lead to changes in teaching and learning processes as well as new ways to demonstrate best practices for increasing students’ achievement. The Curriculum 2013 suggests teachers to use authentic materials and requires them to apply authentic assessments. It is quite challenging for English teachers because this condition creates problems especially for novice teachers. Therefore, they need to have prior knowledge and personal experience related to teaching practice and situation. In this study, authentic materials and authentic assessments were implemented in pre-service-English-teacher classroom at a university in Bogor, specifically in listening class, in order to familiarize them to the kind of materials and assessments. Action research was employed where documentation, observation, questionnaire, and interview were used to collect the data. The result shows that the integration of authentic materials and authentic assessment in EFL classroom helped the students in understanding the nature and the use of authentic materials and authentic assessment for their future needs of profession.
